  • Liopep: A Gamified Casual Exergame Application to help Office Workers not be Active Couch Potatoes
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceeding of the <em>2023 IEEE 11th International Conference on Serious Games and Applications for Health</em>. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9798350346077 - 9798350346084
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Prolonged sedentary life is associated with several health risks. Office work is characterized by prolonged sedentary time and contributes significantly to the total sedentary exposure for office employees. This work aims to investigate the combination of casual exergames with gamification, two concepts that can impact behavior change, to decrease the prolonged sitting time for office workers, by interrupting long periods of sitting. A gamified web-based break application for micro-training using casual exergames and movement exercises was designed. A user study with office workers was conducted where workers had access to the application for 45 weeks, during which reward-based gamification was introduced in the application during an 11-week period and usage was compared before, during, and after the introduction of the reward-based game elements. The results showed that participants reported a positive experience of the application and that the breaks during the reward-based gamification period was higher compared to the period before and after the inclusion of the reward-based gamification.

  • The Attractiveness and Effectiveness of Upper Body and Full Body Casual Exergame Controllers
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: <em>2023 IEEE 11th International Conference on Serious Games and Applications for Health</em>, SeGAH, IEEE, 2023. - : IEEE. - 9798350346077 - 9798350346084
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exergames, active videogames in which players use their bodies to control the game, have been successful under certain conditions to produce enjoyable experiences and physical benefits. Casual exergames have been developed with simple game mechanics and short game play durations with the intent to promote exertion. Previous research has suggested that using full body game controllers in exergames compared to upper body movements has greater potential in producing high levels of exertion. In the present work we explore the impact of using upper compared to full body exergame controllers on players’ level of perceived immersion, perceived control, and perceived exertion in the context of casual exergames. A between subject, quasi-experiment was conducted with 80 participants, playing the same casual exergame with either upper body movement controllers or full body movement controllers. The results showed a significant difference between groups in terms of perceived control but not in terms of perceived immersion or perceived exertion. Based on the findings we recommend that casual exergame designers do not overlook the use of upper body game controllers in casual exergames but consider them as an alternative to using full body game controllers.

  • Considerations for Player Enjoyment and Exertion in Casual Exergames
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 57th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - : University of Hawai'i at Manoa. - 9780998133171 ; , s. 1328-1337
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One approach to reduce sedentary behavior isthrough casual exergames, exergames with simplegame mechanics played during short time increments.Casual exergames have shown success in producingenjoyable experiences and sufficient levels of exertion.Yet, previous research has neglected what to considerin order to design enjoyable and exerting experiencesin casual exergames. The present work explores thisaspect through an exploratory mixed methodsresearch design, comparing the perceived exertionand enjoyment of four different casual exergames. Inrelation to traditional exergame guidelines werecommend that casual exergames focus on allowingfor high ambiguity of movements, balance thecognitive complexity of the game, and direct players’attention from the body by utilizing fast game pace.

  • The Effect of Assigned Goals in Casual Exergames on Performance, Exertion and Enjoyment
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: In <em>2023 IEEE 11th International Conference on Serious Games and Applications for Health</em>, SeGAH, IEEE, 2023. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9798350346077 - 9798350346084
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Casual exergames offer potential in decreasing sedentary behavior. Yet, little is known about how casual exergames can be designed to provide higher levels of physical effectiveness and psychological attractiveness. From the lens of goal setting theory, we explore if assigned goals affect players performance, exertion, and enjoyment in a casual exergame. A quasi-experimental design was applied, comparing the performance, exertion, and enjoyment during two game rounds for a group exposed to a specific goal setting prompt in the second game round, compared to a control group. Further analysis was conducted on how the participants changes in performance, exertion and enjoyment between game rounds was affected by either receiving or not receiving the goal setting prompt. The results support the notion that assigned goals in casual exergames result in higher performance, exertion, and enjoyment on a group level. Furthermore, the results showed that on an individual level the assigned goal resulted in a higher increase in exertion between game rounds, but not in performance nor enjoyment.

  • Using MediaPipe Machine Learning to Design Casual Exertion Games to Interrupt Prolonged Sedentary Lifestyle
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: HCI in Games. - 9783031359309 - 9783031359293 ; , s. 237-251
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Casual exergames have shown potential in providing sufficient levels of exertion to decrease sedentary behavior. However, previous casual exergame implementations do not follow the guidelines of allowing for shorter (2-3 minute) active breaks during more regular increments. To evaluate if casual exergames could be applied following the guidelines of shorter more regular increments we designed and developed a casual exergame using MediaPipe. The resulting game, Balloon Pump, was evaluated at a game and cosplay festival with 60 participants playing the game. After game play, perceived exertion, control and immersion, and overall experience of the game, was measured and the performance and number of movements were noted. The results from the evaluation study showed that the game was perceived as controllable, had produced sufficient levels of exertion, and was perceived as fun. The immersive experience of the game was low and the participants commented on several ways in which this aspect could be improved, such as adding more incentives and variation in the game.

  • The Progression of Students’ Ability to Work With Scope, Parameter Passing and Aliasing
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ACE '23. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery. - 9781450399418 ; , s. 39-48
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Students need the ability to reason about the behavior of programs when working with advanced concepts like concurrency and abstraction. To achieve this, students require core programming skills that allow them to trace and predict the outcome of a program. While previous research indicates that teachers cannot expect students to acquire all core programming skills after their introductory CS course, less is known of students’ progression in later years. In this study, we investigate 397 students’ ability to predict the outcome of short computer programs. The participants are from different programs and progressions in their studies. We find that students, regardless of program and year, struggle with predicting the outcome of short programs that require an accurate mental model of some less readily apparent concepts, such as references. Further, we discover that there is no significant improvement in the first three years. Finally, we propose further avenues of research to improve these learning outcomes.

  • Length of time periods in treatment effect descriptions and willingness to initiate preventive therapy : a randomised survey experiment
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making. - : BMC. - 1472-6947. ; 18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Common measures used to describe preventive treatment effects today are proportional, i.e. they compare the proportions of events in relative or absolute terms, however they are not easily interpreted from the patient's perspective and different magnitudes do not seem to clearly discriminate between levels of effect presented to people. Methods In this randomised cross-sectional survey experiment, performed in a Swedish population-based sample (n=1041, response rate 58.6%), the respondents, aged between 40 and 75years were given information on a hypothetical preventive cardiovascular treatment. Respondents were randomised into groups in which the treatment was described as having the effect of delaying a heart attack for different periods of time (Delay of Event,DoE): 1month, 6months or 18months. Respondents were thereafter asked about their willingness to initiate such therapy, as well as questions about how they valued the proposed therapy. ResultsLonger DoE:s were associated with comparatively greater willingness to initiate treatment. The proportions accepting treatment were 81, 71 and 46% when postponement was 18months, 6months and 1month respectively. In adjusted binary logistic regression models the odds ratio for being willing to take therapy was 4.45 (95% CI 2.72-7.30) for a DoE of 6months, and 6.08 (95% CI 3.61-10.23) for a DoE of 18months compared with a DoE of 1month. Greater belief in the necessity of medical treatment increased the odds of being willing to initiate therapy. ConclusionsLay people's willingness to initiate preventive therapy was sensitive to the magnitude of the effect presented as DoE. The results indicate that DoE is a comprehensible effect measure, of potential value in shared clinical decision-making.

  • Library Communication Among Programmers Worldwide
  • 2002
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Programmers worldwide share components and jointly develop components on a global scale in contemporary software development. An important aspect of such library-based programming is the need for technical communication with regard to libraries – library communication. As part of their work, programmers must discover, study, and learn as well as debate problems and future development. In this sense, the electronic, networked media has fundamentally changed programming by providing new mechanisms for communication and global interaction through global networks such as the Internet. Today, the baseline for library communication is hypertext documentation. Improvements in quality, efficiency, cost and frustration of the programming activity can be expected by further developments in the electronic aspects of library communication. This thesis addresses the use of the electronic networked medium in the activity of library communication and aims to discover design knowledge for communication tools and processes directed towards this particular area. A model of library communication is provided that describes interaction among programmer as webs of interrelated library communities. A discussion of electronic, networked tools and processes that match such a model is also provided. Furthermore, research results are provided from the design and industrial valuationof electronic reference documentation for the Java domain. Surprisingly, the evaluation did not support individual adaptation (personalization). Furthermore, global library communication processes have been studied in relation to open-source documentation and user-related bug handling. Open-source documentation projects are still relatively uncommon even in open-source software projects. User-related Open-source does not address the passive behavior users have towards bugs. Finally, the adaptive authoring process in electronic reference documentation is addressed and found to provide limited support for expressing the electronic, networked dimensions of authoring requiring programming skill by technical writers.Library communication is addressed here by providing engineering knowledge with regards to the construction of practical electronic, networked tools and processes in the area. Much of the work has been performed in relation to Java library communication and therefore the thesis has particular relevancefor the object-oriented programming domain. A practical contribution of the work is the DJavadoc tool that contributes to the development of reference documentation by providing adaptive Java reference documentation.

  • Use-Oriented Documentation in Software Development
  • 1999
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Software documentation is an important tool in modem component-based programming. Building software applications requires detailed knowledge about a vast number of components and the structures they form. This knowledge is often acquired by reading reference documentation of application-programming interfaces (APIs). Thus, the design of the API reference documentation and its reading support affect the cost and quality of software development. We examine how efficiency and quality in software development can be increased through the design of software documentation and reading support for software documentation. The thesis reports on the DJavadoc project and the reading support for online Java API reference documentation that it provides. The Java API reference documentation can be viewed as a collection of documentation designed for multiple needs. As a consequence, ex:cessive information is present in most situations. In DJavadoc we have extended the official Java API reference documentation to achieve control over the visibility of information types. DJavadoc adds client-side, real-time redesign to the documentation to support the design of multiple views. As a result, the reader may further design views of the information that are more in line with the reader's personal and changing needs. In the thesis we also discuss online API reference documentation and its role in programming. Our preliminary studies support the design strategy taken in DJavadoc. The DJavadoc architecture has also proven suitable for continuos redesign of online documentation. Furthermore, our work provides several future research directions for software documentation and communication of functionality. The Javadoc approach can be developed to achieve more use-oriented documentation. However, the need of use-oriented documentation may also have impact on the Java programming language and ultimately object orientation.

  • Distributed user interfaces for clinical ubiquitous computing applications
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Medical Informatics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1386-5056 .- 1872-8243. ; 74:7-8, s. 545-551
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: Ubiquitous computing with multiple interaction devices requires new interface models that support user-specific modifications to applications and facilitate the fast development of active workspaces. Methods: We have developed NOSTOS, a computer-augmented work environment for clinical personnel to explore new user interface paradigms for ubiquitous computing. NOSTOS uses several devices such as digital pens, an active desk, and walk-up displays that allow the system to track documents and activities in the workplace. Results: We present the distributed user interface (DUI) model that allows standalone applications to distribute their user interface components to several devices dynamically at run-time. This mechanism permit clinicians to develop their own user interfaces and forms to clinical information systems to match their specific needs. We discuss the underlying technical concepts of DUIs and show how service discovery, component distribution, events and layout management are dealt with in the NOSTOS system. Conclusion: Our results suggest that DUIs - and similar network-based user interfaces - will be a prerequisite of future mobile user interfaces and essential to develop clinical multi-device environments. © 2005 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. • A patient-derived xenograft pre-clinical trial reveals treatment responses and a resistance mechanism to karonudib in metastatic melanoma
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Cell Death & Disease. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-4889. ; 9:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Karonudib (TH1579) is a novel compound that exerts anti-tumor activities and has recently entered phase I clinical testing. The aim of this study was to conduct a pre-clinical trial in patient-derived xenografts to identify the possible biomarkers of response or resistance that could guide inclusion of patients suffering from metastatic melanoma in phase II clinical trials. Patient-derived xenografts from 31 melanoma patients with metastatic disease were treated with karonudib or a vehicle for 18 days. Treatment responses were followed by measuring tumor sizes, and the models were categorized in the response groups. Tumors were harvested and processed for RNA sequencing and protein analysis. To investigate the effect of karonudib on T-cell-mediated anti-tumor activities, tumor-infiltrating T cells were injected in mice carrying autologous tumors and the mice treated with karonudib. We show that karonudib has heterogeneous anti-tumor effect on metastatic melanoma. Thus, based on the treatment responses, we could divide the 31 patient-derived xenografts in three treatment groups: progression group (32%), suppression group (42%), and regression group (26%). Furthermore, we show that karonudib has anti-tumor effect, irrespective of major melanoma driver mutations. Also, we identify high expression of ABCB1, which codes for p-gp pumps as a resistance biomarker. Finally, we show that karonudib treatment does not hamper T-cell-mediated anti-tumor responses. These findings can be used to guide future use of karonudib in clinical use with a potential approach as precision medicine.

  • Programming ubiquitous software applications : requirments for distributed user interface
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of The Sixteenth International Conference on Software Engineering and Knowledge Engineering SEKE04,2004. - Skokie, IL, USA : Knowledge Systems Institute graduate school. ; , s. 246-251
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Mobile and ubiquitous computing require new approaches to user interface design. Incorporating I/O devices in the environment is imperative because small devices do not provide enough interaction richness. Distributed user interfaces (DUIs) are needed to take advantage of such I/O-landscapes.A DUI constitutes a fundamental change of the pretext of user interface development. New programming models that support efficient creation and maintenance may be required. This paper presents a case study in DUI design and report on the use of current GUI modeling techniques to provide DUIs. We identified several issues where current programming models need to be extended.

  • Cytoplasmic p21WAF1/CIP1 correlates with Akt activation and poor response to tamoxifen in breast cancer
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Oncology. - 1019-6439 .- 1791-2423. ; 28:5, s. 1031-1042
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • P21WAF1/Cip1 (p21) translocates to the cytoplasm inducing cell cycle progression and survival upon Akt/PKB activation. We studied whether heregulin beta1 (HRGbeta1), that activates the PI3K/Akt and MAPK pathways, also misallocates p21. We also explored whether HRGbeta1 interferes with the effects of tamoxifen. The clinical material studied helped us to clarify whether p21 was associated with phosphorylated Akt, recurrence-free survival and response to tamoxifen. MCF-7 cells treated with HRGbeta1 -/+ E2 were analyzed by flow cytometry to observe how the different compounds affected tamoxifen-induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Total cell lysate and nuclear and cytoplasmic fractions were used to detect p21, phospho-Akt and other proteins by Western blotting. Immunofluorescence was used to visualize p21+ cells upon HRGbeta1 and E2 stimulation. The localization of p21 in breast cancer was studied by immunohistochemistry in frozen tumor sections from 280 patients. In MCF-7 we found that HRGbeta1 counteracted the inhibition of p21 expression by tamoxifen and caused p21 cytoplasmic accumulation. HRGbeta1 partially counteracted the cytostatic effect of tamoxifen but abrogated its cytotoxic effect. The clinical material revealed that nuclear p21 (P=0.022) and cytoplasmic p21 (P=0.00001) were associated with phospho-Akt. Based on p21 cell location, we identified 3 subgroups of ER+ patients: the p21N+/C- group for whom tamoxifen was needed otherwise the survival was poor (P=0.0082), the p21N+/C+ or p21N-/C- group, that responded to tamoxifen (P=0.034), and the p21C+/N- group, that might not benefit from this treatment (P=0.7). In conclusion, HRGbeta1 inhibits tamoxifen-induced apoptosis, contributes to p21 cytoplasmic expression while the cellular localization of p21 interacts with the benefit from tamoxifen treatment.
