  • In search of meaning in opera : an opera singer's approach to the dialectics of words, music & myth in opera from Monteverdi to Verdi
  • 2000
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to show that the opera singer's art is to transmit word and music into vocal action. It is assumed that opera, like all the arts, communicates myth. Of the stage arts opera is unique in that it expresses mythic metaphors through a combination of words and music. The point of departure is the opera singer's: confronted with the text, comprising libretto and music, how can this be used to achieve a dramatic effect? Stanislavsky's theory of acting is often applied in practice, but whatever its merits for the stage, it has shortcomings for opera. More promising, it is argued, is a form of hermeneutic approach that Ricoeur calls "backward relatedness": the composer's score is relied on to contain all essential information, but further understanding may be gained by studying any human science that gives insight into how the poet expresses his life experience. In this spirit, the first part of the thesis surveys the history of opera from Monteverdi to Verdi with a focus on how composers have handled the relation between words and music to give expression to human conflicts that are the stuff of myth. The second part comprises two chapters in which arias from each of the main periods studied are analysed with attention paid both to the libretto and the music and how these combine in vocal action that communicates myth. It is here that the fruitfulness of Ricoeur's insights are demonstrated. In a final part, the conditions for the present-day opera singer are discussed.

  • Proteolytic modification of pig and rat liver pyruvate kinase including the phosphorylatable site
  • 1978
  • Ingår i: Biochimica et Biophysica Acta. - 0006-3002 .- 1878-2434. ; 532:2, s. 259-267
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The phosphorylated or phosphate-accepting site of pyruvate kinase from pig and rat liver was removed without inactivation by incubation with subtilisin. At different time intervals the subtilisin was inactivated with phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride and the amount of remaining phosphorylatable or phosphorylated sites of pyruvate kinase estimated by incubation with an excess of [32P]-ATP and protein kinase. It was found that to get the same rate of modification the subtilisin concentration required to modify unphosphorylated pyruvate kinase was approximately ten times higher than that used for removal of the phosphorylated site of phosphorylated site of phosphorylated enzyme. It was shown that the proteolytically-modified pyruvate kinase had an increased apparent Km for phosphoenolpyruvate without a change in V, when compared to unmodified unphosphorylated and phosphorylated pyruvate kinase. The removal of the phosphorylated site was not associated with loss of the allosteric sites for ATP and Fru-1,6-P2. The possibility that phosphorylation of the pyruvate kinase increases its degradation rate in vivo is briefly discussed.

  • Fatigue of cold work tool steel
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Matériaux & Techniques. - : EDP Sciences. - 0032-6895 .- 1778-3771. ; 87:1-2, s. 9-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One important surface property of forming tools is their resistance to cracking due to fatigue loading. The wide variety of steel grades, material handling, machining operations and surface treatments will give very different fatigue properties. The present article gives examples on the influence of steel grades, EDM machining and surface coating. Initial cracks may be introduced in the tool during the processing to its final shape and surface finish, why a particular interest is given to small cracks introduced by the EDM process.

  • Significant others' influence on participation in everyday life : the perspectives of persons with early diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Disability and Rehabilitation. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0963-8288 .- 1464-5165. ; 42:3, s. 385-393
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To describe the meaning of significant others in relation to participation in everyday life of persons with early diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Materials and methods: Fifty-nine persons participated in this interview study. Inclusion criteria were three years’ experience of diagnosis and being of working age. Semi-structured interviews were conducted using critical incident technique (CIT), and the material was analysed using content analysis. Results: Four categories were revealed: (1) My early RA causes activity adaptations for us all, referring to the person and significant others modifying activities. (2) Making the significant others balance between shortfalls and participation, where the participants distinguished between needing help and feeling involved in activities. (3) Physical interactions with significant others, referring to both the problematic and manageable impact RA could have on body contact. (4) Emotions in relation to activities with others, where participants described feelings of failing others, and anxiety about future activities. Conclusions: For persons with early diagnosed RA, significant others can be both hindering and facilitating for participation in everyday life. As a clinical implication, it is valuable to identify how significant others can be involved in the rehabilitation process, to enhance participation in everyday life early in the disease process.Implications for rehabilitation Significant others of persons with rheumatoid arthritis can facilitate as well as hinder participation in everyday life, even early in the disease process. It is important to include the significant others in the rehabilitation process of persons with early diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis. It is of great importance to identify when and how significant others can be facilitators of participation in everyday life for persons with early rheumatoid arthritis. To make it easier for significant others to facilitate participation, there is a need for the healthcare system to explore ways to support significant others with easily accessible information about early rheumatoid arthritis.

  • Kaliningrad Identity - Crucial to Democracy and Development in the Baltic Sea Region : a seminar report
  • 2009
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Kaliningrad Identity was the issue of two seminars held in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad in 2005 and 2007. This report contains papers mainly from the second seminar, which was divided into four topics: History-Bearers, Democrats, Neighbours and Culture-Bearers.The purpose of the seminar was to discuss the meaning of identity in the Kaliningrad region, with particalur reference to the Baltic Sea Region and the EU, in order to:Raise awareness of, and increase interest in, our close but not very well-known neighboursIncrease long-term cooperation with the Kalinigrad region at various levelsDevelop cooperation between Russia-Kaliningrad and the EU and to strengthen democracy in the Baltic Sea region.

  • Migrating birds and tickborne encephalitis virus
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Emerging Infectious Diseases. - : Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). - 1080-6040 .- 1080-6059. ; 13:8, s. 1215-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During spring and autumn 2001, we screened 13,260 migrating birds at Ottenby Bird Observatory, Sweden, and found 3.4% were infested with ticks. Four birds, each a different passerine species, carried tickborne encephalitis virus (TBEV)-infected ticks (Ixodes ricinus). Migrating birds may play a role in the geographic dispersal of TBEV-infected ticks.
