  • ”Du måste försöka leva dig in i min situation!” Ironi, humor och det patetiska hos Kristina Lugn

    • “You have to understand my situation!” Irony, humour and the pathetic in the works of Kristina Lugn (”Du måste försöka leva dig in i min situation!” Ironi, humor och det patetiska hos Kristina Lugn)Use of irony has long been conceived as the primary characteristic of the Swedish author Kristina Lugn (1948–). In this article I treat irony as an important feature in Lugn’s literary texts — but I further argue, with support from claims made by the author, that the role of irony is significantly lesser in Lugn’s later authorship, which instead tries to establish “humour” as a mode of reception. This switch also corresponds (but is not identical) to Lugn’s change from writing collections of poems to primarily writing plays instead. The modes of irony and humour are both effectuated through breaches of style. Two or more stylistic levels can collide with each other, creating dissonance between different levels of reality, or words are used in non-idiomatic senses, thus creating unexpected connections and revealing several layers of meaning. The mode of irony is primarily established through the first technique, and aims to create a distance between the event and the statement, a distance which creates room for criticism. The mode of humour is more often established through the second technique, and aims at empathy with the person speaking, rather than establishing distance. Likewise, this mode does not separate between apparent meaning and implied meaning. Lastly, I argue that the mode of humour, which in Lugn’s texts seems close to that of the romantics, is connected to a sort of rehabilitation of the pathetic as an affect. By humorously treating classic topics such as love, death, family conflicts and illness, Lugn is being pathetic in the classical sense of arousing strong emotions, while at the same time — by inserting stylistic switches between the poetically serious and the prosaically mundane — being able to view the pathetic, in the sense of “overtly emotional”, in a humorous light.

    • Masonic Media: On Mediation of Secrets in Speech, Handwriting and Print within Eighteenth Century Freemasonry. This article deals with 18th century Freemasonry as a platform for mediation of secrets. First it discusses different theoretical aspects that can be applied when studying the phenomenon of initiatory orders with communication in focus. But it also uses different masonic sources in order to investigate some of the techniques used to mediate secrets, most notably ciphers and hieroglyphs. Aligning myself with Linda Simonis’ system theoretical view of masonry, I show that masonry depended on a distinction between secret and disclosure in order to make new candidates pass from profane to initiate. In order to distribute – but also in a sense create – secrets, the masons made use of several techniques such as vows of silence, locked archives, ciphers and hieroglyphs which were used either to enclose information (at the level of the medium) or encode it (at the level of meaning). Through use of such techniques the masonic organisations – with their sharp borders between inside and outside – can itself be conceived as mediums for the “secret of masonry”. This in turn put masonry into opposition to the transparency ideal of the Enlightenment.

  • Frälsningsarmén och förlöjligandet : Om retoriska strategier för att bemöta hån och skämt runt sekelskiftet 1900
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Rhetorica Scandinavica. - : Retorikförlaget. - 1397-0534 .- 2002-7974. ; 27:86, s. 8-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • The Order and the Archive : Freemasonic Archival Culture in Eighteenth-Century Europe
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study explores how eighteenth-century European Masons created archives, and how these archives in turn created Masons. It is an exploration of how a masonic archival culture was formed, and how different ideas, hopes, and anxieties were co-produced along with the records and manuscripts kept by masonic associations. At stake in these archival practices was the goal of establishing “order”.  I draw theoretical inspiration from works by e.g. Markus Friedrich, Randolph C. Head, and Cornelia Vismann, all of whom have articulated a process-oriented view of archival history. By using materials found in historical collections from masonic associations in present-day archives, especially registers and archival regulations, I provide an overview of the documents accumulated in masonic archives and collections. Through studying not only the Masons’ practices of archiving and collecting, but also their discourses about “collections” and “archives”, I can show how archiving filled administrative functions but also had implications for the kind of knowledge that Masons found their order to be a container for.  A historical exposé of archival history in a period stretching from early modernity to the modern period situates the archives of the masonic associations in a wider cultural-historical context. A general investigation of different repositories and means for archival accumulation within masonic associations shows how their record-keeping was frequently combined with collecting, and how both practices served to establish order at different levels.  Two case studies, about the German based Order of the Strict Observance, and the Swedish Order of Freemasons, respectively, illustrate the effects of the notion of archived “secrets”, and explore the relation between masonic archiving and state administration. The final chapter discusses how masonic archives had an impact in the sphere of published literature: on the one hand, as a source of materials for sensationalist “exposures” and internal masonic-historiography and, on the other, as a theme for fantasies in literary fiction. My claim is that archival practices stood at the centre, both of organisational efforts of building wide organisational networks with the capacity for strategic action, and of personal quests to acquire the “higher knowledge” believed to be on the orders’ inside.
