  • Barbour's Typologies and the Contemporary Debate on Islam and Science
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Zygon. - : Wiley. - 0591-2385. ; 47:3, s. 501-519
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite various criticisms, Ian Barbour's fourfold classification of the possible relationships between religion and science remains influential. I compare Barbour's taxonomy with the theories of four authors who, in the last four decades, have addressed the relationship between science and religion from a Muslim perspective. The aim of my analysis is twofold. First, I offer a comparative perspective to the debate on science and Islam. Second, following Barbour's suggestion, I test the general applicability of his categories by comparing them with a discourse on science and religion that is not focused on Christianity. In the first section, I reconstruct Barbour's typologies, recalling some major objections to them, and arguing why despite the latter, Barbour's model is employed for the present analysis. I also reconstruct Barbour's parallel model for the relationships between different religions. In the second section, I reconstruct the discourse on science and religion developed by the Palestinian-American scholar Ismail Raji al-Faruqi. The third section is devoted to the ideas of the Persian-American scholar Seyyed Hossein Nasr. In the fourth section, I examine the views of the Iranian author Mehdi Golshani. The fifth section reconstructs the theories of the Algerian author Nidhal Guessoum. In the final section, I argue that a generalized use of the integration concept to refer to the entire debate on Islam and science is unhelpful. While these positions do not appear to instantiate Barbourian integration of science and religion, they do move toward what Barbour (skeptically) describes as integration between religions.

  • La Santa Muerte and Her Interventions in Human Affairs : a Theological Discussion
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Sophia. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0038-1527 .- 1873-930X. ; 55:3, s. 303-323
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses upon the popular devotion for la Santa Muerte that emerged in Mexico and is gaining a rapid increase in notoriety in the country and abroad. The first sections reconstruct in detail its protean manifestations, as well as the interpretations contained in extant scholarly investigations, popular Mexican press and other texts. The final section, adopting a fine-grained, theological-epistemological viewpoint argues that la Santa’s interventions in human affairs, essential to explain her popularity, although usually described as ‘miracles’ can be better understood as paros—a term employed by devotees in order to define the end of a situation, usually unpleasant or unfavourable. It is also argued that a careful examination of such paros provides us with deeper insights into the devotion’s success and resiliency.

  • New religious movements and science: Rael's progressive patronizing parasitism
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Zygon. - : Wiley. - 0591-2385. ; 50:1, s. 64-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article examines the concoction of religion and science contained in the revelation that substantiates a new religion: Raelianism, founded and led by the prophet Claude Vorilhon/Rael after having received a revelation in 1974. After a detailed examination both of Rael's prophetic message and his/the Raelians' interpretative practices, an ad hoc model is presented to describe such concoction (progressive patronizing parasitism), and it is compared to other models. It is in particular claimed that Rael, while seemingly talking about science, is actually constructing a science-fictional and even pseudoscientific narrative. The article finally raises the question whether the discussion of the science-religion interaction from the viewpoint of traditional religions can be considered to be immune to the usage of such rhetorical devices.

  • Secret cousins : Analogies in the construction of religious authority through "science" in Maurice Bucaille and Claude Vorilhon (Raël)
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nova Religio. - : University of California Press. - 1092-6690 .- 1541-8480. ; 20:2, s. 34-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper I discuss the work of two French authors who advocate a "scientific" exegesis of sacred scriptures: physician Maurice Bucaille (1922-1998) and religious leader Claude Vorilhon (alias Raël, b. 1946). Bucaille argues that the Qur'an's divine origin is demonstrated by its accuracy about natural phenomena and "scientific facts," whereas the Bible does not stand up to "scientific" examination. Vorilhon supposedly received a revelation regarding the creation of humanity by an alien race, the Elohim. Part and parcel of such revelation is a biblical exegesis that identifies, in numerous passages of the Old and New Testaments, allusions to the Elohim's technological interventions in the history of humanity. I argue here that despite apparent differences, these textual strategies - blending "science" and scriptures - display substantial similarities, and that they are influenced by narrative and philosophical patterns deeply rooted in French culture.

  • Testing Latour's app: a user's guide
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Zygon. - : Wiley. - 0591-2385. ; 49:4, s. 890-903
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • I reconstruct Bruno Latour's ideas about science and religion and compare them to Ian G. Barbour's and Mikael Stenmark's models, as well as to the discussion of technology and religion developed by John C. Caiazza and Antje Jackelen. I show how using "Latour's App" enlightens some aspects of said models which Barbour and Stenmark themselves were seemingly struggling with, and that Caiazza's and Jackelen's views can be reconciled despite their apparent opposition. The result of such tests is an overall assessment of Latour's proposal. I argue that, under the disguise of a flamboyant and original language, Latour's method is not that distant from those of the other authors analyzed here, and that his discussion might conceal some unwelcome philosophical shortcomings.

  • The Interpretation of Miracles according to Mutahhari and Golshani: Comparative and Critical Notes
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Shi'a Islamic Studies. - : Project Muse. - 1748-9423 .- 2051-557X. ; 6:3, s. 261-288
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this essay, I scrutinize the interpretation of miracles advanced by Ayatollah Motahhari (1920-1979), the well-known Shi'a scholar; and Mehdi Golshani (1939-), a physicist and philosopher of science. The essay begins with a presentation of their viewpoints on the nature of miracles in the light of the broader philosophical discourse on the nature of miracles. This is followed by a comparative analysis of their viewpoints with a consideration of relevant Qur'anic passages and their philosophical relevance. Finally, it concludes with a discussion of the challenges inherent to their interpretations.

  • The Strange Case of Dr. Bucaille: Notes for a Re-examination
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Muslim World. - : Wiley. - 0027-4909. ; 102:2, s. 248-263
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present essay focuses on the figure of Maurice Bucaille and on his contribution to the discourse on Islam and science. Its purpose is twofold. First of all, it aims to provide the reader with a concise map of the ideas of the French author, reconstructing their core and their interrelations. Furthermore, it aims to question what I define as the apparent naivety of Bucaille's work, a reason why he can sometimes be too easily dismissed, by pinpointing a number of original features of his intellectual activity. My argument is that Bucaille deserves more attention for two good reasons: firstly, because of the influence that he de facto exerts on Muslim societies, secondly, because of some highly specific characteristics of his discourse. Such features not only distinguish his contribution from analogous ones, but also give rise to interpretative questions, which have as yet been either overlooked or unsatisfactorily addressed. Closely connected to this thesis is the idea that Bucaille's work constitutes a good starting point for a discussion amongst scholars of different disciplines and from different cultural backgrounds. The first section reconstructs Bucaille's life and works. The second section focuses on his method and ideas regarding science. The third section is devoted to Bucaille's conclusions following his study of the Bible and the Qur'an, and therefore deals more closely with the core of his ideas. The fourth section covers Bucaille's complementary criticism of the theory of evolution. In the fifth section I examine the possible reasons behind the scant scholarly attention concerning Bucaille. In the final section I propose an interpretative model of Bucaille's figure conceived as a system of concentric spheres and I raise, for each one of them, several questions, which have so far been, in my view, insufficiently investigated, thus setting an agenda for further scholarly work.

  • What would Ron choose from the Islamic basket? Notes on Scientology's construction of Islam
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Temenos. - 0497-1817. ; 51:1, s. 95-121
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two theological claims characterizing Scientology are its continuity with older religions, and its support for religious freedom and pluralism. This article, focusing on two articles that appeared in the magazine Advance! in the 1970s as well as other pieces authored by L. R. Hubbard, analyses Scientology's narrative about Islam following Jan Hjärpe's 'basket theory'.
