  • What are analog bulletin boards used for today? Analysing media uses, intermediality and technology affordances in Swedish bulletin board messages using a citizen science approach
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: PLoS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 13:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Analog bulletin boards are omnipresent in Swedish urban areas, yet little systematic knowledge about this communication medium exists. In the shadow of the rapid emergence of digital media the analog bulletin board has received less attention than its digital successors, many of them having incorporated similar functionality with novel technical solutions. In this study we used a citizen science method to collect 1167 messages from bulletin boards around Sweden aided by school children and teachers, with the purpose of shedding new light on what is communicated on the boards, by whom, using what types of technologies and in what way the messages refer to other media. Results show that the most common messages are invitations to events, such as concerts, lectures and sports events, followed by buy-and-sell ads for goods and services. The most frequent sender is an association, for example NGOs, sports associations or religious communities. Almost half of the sampled messages were professionally printed, about forty per cent were made by home printers. Only six per cent of the messages were handwritten, almost exclusively by private persons as senders. Moreover, we show how the analog bulletin board has adapted to recent changes in media technology—a media landscape which is saturated with electronic- and mobile media. Further, the bulletin board still holds a firm place in a media ecology where local communication is in demand, and exists in parallel with electronic media. Close to forty percent of the messages contained hyperlinks to web pages and we found (and removed for anonymization purposes) more than six hundred phone numbers from the dataset.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Multimodality & Society. - : Sage Publications. - 2634-9795 .- 2634-9809. ; 4:1, s. 3-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This issue, the first of volume 4, marks the start of Multimodality & Society’s fourth year and provides a good moment to look across the past 3 years to review and reflect on the journal’s contribution to multimodality. Multimodality & Society aims to consolidate and advance multimodal theory, methodologies, and empirical understanding of interaction and communication. This editorial considers the collective contribution of the 12 issues published to date and points to how the journal can continue to push the boundaries of multimodality forward. We highlight the significance of the journal’s expansion of multimodal formats, and several directions embedded in the journal scope which we have advanced.

  • Advancing multimodal and critical discourse studies : Interdisciplinary research inspired by Theo van Leeuwen's social semiotics
  • 2018. - 1
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a founder and leading figure in multimodality and social semiotics, Theo van Leuween has made significant contributions to a variety of research fields, including discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, communication and media studies, education, and design. In celebration of his illustrious research career, this volume brings together a group of leading and emerging scholars in these fields to review, explore and advance two central research agendas set out by van Leeuwen: the categorisation of the meaning potential of various semiotic resources and the examination of their uses in different forms of communication, and the critical analysis of the interaction between semiotic forms, norms and technology in discursive practices. Through 11 cutting-edge research papers and an experimental visual essay, the book investigates a broad range of semiotic resources including touch, sound, image, texture, and discursive practices such as community currency, fitness regime, film scoring, and commodity upcycling. The book showcases how social semiotics and multimodality can provide insights into the burning issues of the day, such as global neoliberalism, terrorism, consumerism, and immigration.

  • Discourses in and Around Upcycled Artefacts : A Social Semiotic Perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: State-of-the-Art Upcycling Research and Practice. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030726409 - 9783030726393 ; , s. 29-32
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter employs a social semiotic perspective to explore global/local discourses of upcycled artefacts. Social semiotics bring a focus on meaning-making to the emerging field of upcycling studies: in what ways does the social practice of upcycling produce meanings of, for instance, value adding, emancipation, or sustainability? In particular, this chapter focuses on the aesthetic and functional values that are added in upcycling that address the demands of different local and global markets. An interest in the relation between social practices, materiality and meaning-making is at the core of social semiotics, and this chapter focuses on how discourses in and around an upcycled artefact make it possible for it to move between cultural and geographical spaces, whilst both maintaining and transforming the meaning potential of the artefact.

  • 2018. - 1
  • Ingår i: Advancing multimodal and critical discourse studies. - New York : Routledge. - 9781138697638 - 9781315521015 ; , s. 165-180
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The last twenty years has seen the rise of global consumer movements that critique overconsumption, focusing on looking at the whole life of a product or artefact. Practices like ‘recycling’ (re-use without necessarily adding value) and ‘upcycling’ (re-use with obvious value adding) are part of such movements. This chapter looks at value adding in artefacts from a social semiotic perspective in order to explore upcycling as branding in a global context. It draws on van Leeuwen’s (2005) distinction between theoretical and actual semiotic potential of semiotic resources when key branding resources, such as typography, shape, materials, and colour are identified in upcycled artefacts. The connotative and experiential provenance (Kress and van Leeuwen, 2001) of these resources are of key importance for our analysis. We look at how resources are resemiotizised and recontextualised and, to various degrees, recognised in upcycled artefacts  that  move between South Africa and Europe. One of the conclusions is that the processes of value adding through re-branding can be described as spatio-linguistic re-branding or sensory re-branding (cf. Djonov and van Leeuwen, 2011).

  • Anslagstavlan – en vägvisare till ny kunskap?
  • 2017

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nordisk socialsemiotik. - Odense : Syddansk Universitetsforlag. - 9788776746575 ; , s. 59-88
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Resultatdialog 2012. - Stockholm : Vetenskapsrådet. - 9789173072137 ; , s. 48-57

  • Connecting analogue and digital literacy practices? : On uses and semiotic potentials of digital pencils in Swedish middle school and high school
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The 11th International Conference on Multimodality: Desiging Futures. - London : University College London. ; , s. 30-30
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A dichotomization of the resources used for contemporary teaching, learning, and meaningmaking may result in a simplified division of such processes as either ‘digital’ or ‘analogue’. Our presentation addresses this dichotomy, and our understanding of semiotic technologies more broadly, by analyzing the potential of the digital pencil for connecting ‘analogue’ meaning-making to ‘digital’ meaning-making in the subject of Swedish in middle school and high school.  Based on data from two pilot studies, each carried out for two months, our analysis focuses on how digital pencils can be used as tools for multimodal text creation in ways that draw on how this is typically done in analogue genres. This way, the analysis will provide knowledge of the semiotic potentials, affordances and actual uses of digital pencils in school, something which is lacking in previous research, with the exception of a few recent studies (e.g. Riche et al., 2017).  Two main results stand out. First, digital pencils can actually be effectively used to draw on analogue literacy practices in the classroom. Second, digital pencils have other affordances (Lindstrand, 2022) than just functioning as “digital ink”: they are multifunctional in the sense that they can be used as tools for an array of multimodal tasks that analogue pencils cannot. Thus, the analysis concludes that not only can digital pencils be used to resemiotize analogue practices, but they also afford new ways of creating texts.

  • 2018. - 1
  • Ingår i: Kritiska text- och diskursstudier. - Huddinge, Sweden : Södertörns högskola. - 9789188663344 ; , s. 57-79
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An emerging genre at Swedish public authorities – ‘platform of values’ (Swedish ‘värdegrund’) or ‘value statement’/‘core values’ – functions as a backdrop to the theoretical and methodological discussions in this paper. The paper argues for the development of a critical genre analysis that goes beyond being primarily descriptive and that has its main expla- natory value at a level of generality above mode-specific features of, for instance, language or images. Based on a review of how the term ‘critical’ has been defined and applied in relation to genre in critical discourse analysis/studies (CDA/CDS), multimodality, and genre studies of profes- sional communication a number of prerequisites for a critical genre analysis are formulated. Based on these prerequisites, affordance and pro- venance are put forward as ‘true’ multimodal concepts that can form the foundation for a critical genre analysis of, in this case, multimodal ‘plat- form of values’ texts. The applicability of these concepts is illustrated through an analysis of a ‘platform of value’ text from an administrative court in Sweden.

  • Ecologies of ‘upcycling’ as design for learning in Higher Education
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Short papers. ; , s. 7-12
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • As society changes, new ways of understanding and using existing semiotic resources are needed. This study looks at artefacts from a social semiotic perspective in order to explore the concepts of ‘recycling’ and ‘upcycling’ and their relevance for pedagogy in Higher Education. We look at recycling in terms of ‘texts’ and employ methodological tools from multimodal discourse analysis. ‘Recycling’ involves converting materials from one product to create a different product with a different function, without necessarily adding any type of value. In ‘upcycling’, economic, aesthetic or functional value is always added. ‘Upcycling’ can thus be understood as a process of recontextualization of semiotic resources, in both spatio-linguistic and sensory terms. This paper looks at how resources are recontextualized as part of global ecologies of production and consumption. Then, we explore these insights in the pedagogical domain, looking at possible implications of the principles of ‘upcycling’ and value adding through design as a means for educating global critical citizens.

  • Ingår i: Social Semiotics. - : Routledge. - 1035-0330 .- 1470-1219. ; 33:1, s. 209-231
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Departing from Lefebvre’s work on the social production of space, this paper explores the intersection between perceived and lived space from the perspective of spatial discourse analysis. Empirically, the paper studies how the spatiality of international airports performs affective discursive work and establishes prerequisites for air travelers’ feelings of being “in control” and “excited” vs. feelings of being “controlled” and “surveilled”. The concept of binding is applied in order to understand how affect is spatially afforded at Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Vienna International Airport. The analysis reveals that alternations between bound and unbound spaces construe the airports as distinctly ideological sites with different affective potentials. Accordingly, this article adds to the understanding of how airport atmospheres are construed by means of spatial resources such as the height, depth, and shape of walls and ceilings and by the transparency and opaqueness of the built material, as well as by more dynamic elements such as carpets, colors, signage, and retractable belt barriers.

  • Ingår i: Discourse & Communication. - : Sage Publications. - 1750-4813 .- 1750-4821. ; 13:4, s. 398-414
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A large number of Swedish public authorities produce ‘platform of values’ texts that present core values. This article presents a study of how such texts and practices, including the core values they revolve around, are legitimized. Using Van Leeuwen’s legitimation framework, three different data sets are analysed: 47 ‘platform of values’ texts, a focus group discussion with seven senior HR officers, and a quantitative questionnaire study answered by civil servants at three public authorities. The analysis shows how the existence of ‘platform of values’ texts and practices is legitimized through rationalizations, above all by describing the texts as concrete means for reaching specific ends and, with regard to the choice of core values, through a custom-conformity type of authority. Thus, this article addresses discursive transformations of contemporary organizations with a particular focus on available discursive space for critical thinking in the wake of New Public Management and related developments.

    • In ‘one-to-one’ computing, schools provide learners with individual laptops. This chapter presents an analysis of how such laptops are used for writing and text creation by students in two secondary schools. The chapter is framed by a theoretical interest in the interconnections between uses of ‘one-to-one’ laptops in physical places, the virtual spaces they may ‘open up’, and their uses for performing semiotic actions. The results point to differences and possible inequalities in terms of how students perceive and use the semiotic potentials of the laptops as a means for engaging with and acting on the world through writing in combination with other semiotic modes.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Classroom Discourse. - London : Informa UK Limited. - 1946-3014 .- 1946-3022. ; 5:1, s. 22-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ‘One-to-one’ computing projects in which learners work with individual laptops or tablets across subjects are rapidly increasing in number. One aspect of this is that as the laptops give access to the Internet; digital images and texts – potentially from all over the globe – move into the classroom in an unprecedented manner. The paper presents an analysis of specific classroom practices involving seven- to eight-year-olds: the collecting of digital images and their use as semiotic resources in the creation of multimodal texts. The aim is to describe the children’s digital image collections as more or less mode-like – that is, as a more or less systematically organised set of resources for making meaning. The methodology is described as social semiotic ethnography, combining semiotic analysis of images and texts with ethnographic understandings of the personal histories and interests of participants. The paper concludes that there are obvious practices in the classroom in which the children use their image collections in a mode-like way, such as categorising images according to semantic criteria, using them for display of identities in the classroom and systematically using them when designing multimodal texts, expressing both simple denotational meanings and more complex connotational semiotic potentials. Another conclusion is that the children’s image collections have untapped learning potentials, for example regarding critical reflections on how images create meaning, which could form the foundation for concrete learning activities in the classroom.

  • Semiotic vagueness as a tool for goal fulfilment : ‘Platforms of values’ in Swedish public administration
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice. - : Equinox Publishing. - 2040-3658 .- 2040-3666. ; 16:1, s. 5-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the past 15 years, ‘platform of values’ texts presenting core values have become common in most Swedish public authorities. This article presents a study of how this genre is understood and used in professional practices. The aim is to show how semiotic vagueness in such texts serves a number of previously under-researched purposes in public organizations, including, rather paradoxically, concrete goal achievement. The framework of critical genre analysis enables the analytical process to move from text to practice, and further to the superordinate level of professional culture. Three different data sets are analysed: 47 ‘platform of values’ texts; a focus group discussion with seven senior civil servants/managers; and a quantitative questionnaire study answered by civil servants from three public authorities. The findings suggest that vagueness serves as a means to exercise managerial control through the promotion of interpretative work and continuous, identity-related dialogues on value related issues. The article argues that even though such uses of the ‘platform of values’ genre may be functional in neo-bureaucratic organizations, it is also problematic when semiotic vagueness is used as a tool for concrete actions such as internal promotions.

  • Semiotics of destruction : Traces on the environment
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Visual Communication. - : Sage Publications. - 1470-3572 .- 1741-3214. ; 21:2, s. 218-236
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research in fields such as multimodality and semiotics has focused on creation of value in different forms: aesthetic, economic and symbolic. However, the destruction of value has attracted much less attention. The aim of this article is to identify social, semiotic and ideological functions of acts of destruction based on an analysis of the traces these acts leave on the urban environment. Five overarching acts of destruction are discussed, but the authors’ main focus is on what they call transformation-driven and social presence-driven destruction, with two examples from Sweden and South Africa. The article discusses sanctioned destructive acts that are largely in compliance with dominating semiotic regimes at a certain time and place, as well as disruptive actions that challenge or even disobey those regimes. The analysis shows how a distinction between sanctioned and disruptive is in no way clear and often depends on complex power distributions between semiotic regimes at a given time and place. In fact, traces in the physical environment that may point to or index highly destructive acts can, in relation to other semiotic regimes, be regarded as creative and constructive. The authors argue that the semiotic processes of destruction and the traces they leave deserve more attention from research in the fields of multimodality and semiotics.

  • Shame and Pride in the Delegitimization and Relegitimization of Air Travel
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: CADAAD Journal. - : University of Lancaster. - 1752-3079. ; 13:2, s. 63-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article is about the delegitimization and relegitimization of global air travel as a common-sense practice. Based on social semiotics, multimodal critical discourse studies and Ahmed’s (2014) approach to affect and emotion, the study systematically explores how affective subjectivities are construed through the use of shaming practices by climate activists on Instagram and how the aviation industry addresses shaming practices by relegitimizing flying. Thus, the focus of the analysis is on how shame and pride are evoked to answer why the global elite should not fly globally, or, conversely, why they should continue to do so. The results reveal that the discursive delegitimization and relegitimization strategies of climate activists and the aviation industry are based on the same moral assumption that CO2 emissions are bad for the environment and that they both use affect as a key component of their strategies. However, whereas climate activists conduct their flight shaming by pointing to the negative effects of the frequent-flyer lifestyle of social media influencers, the discourse of the aviation industry is entrenched in the negative effects of flying as a starting point for its formation of a proud air traveller identity.

  • Ingår i: Viden om Læsning. - København : Nationalt Videncenter for Læsning. - 1902-3472 .- 2245-2761. ; :16, s. 19-27

  • Social identities offered in Swedish magazine advertising
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Critical discourse analysis of media texts. - València : Universitat de València. - 9788437068725 ; , s. 234-244
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The consumer culture of late modernity, the gender system, and the concept of the model reader are taken as points of departure for the analysis of identities offered in Swedish magazine ads. The model readers are regarded as socially motivated identities that are offered to the empirical readers of the ads. On the one hand, the model readers are treated as textual realisations of the consumer culture and the gender system and, on the other, as varying with respect to target group. The multimodal textual composition of the ads as well as ideational and interpersonal meanings are analysed along with intertextual and interdiscursive relations. One major result is that the model readers in the ads with male target groups tend to be already active, successful and leadership-oriented, whereas model readers in ads with female target groups tend to be more passive, and need the product to adjust or improve themselves.
