  • Covid-19 in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia : clinical outcome and B- and T-cell immunity during 13 months in consecutive patients
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Leukemia. - : Springer Nature. - 0887-6924 .- 1476-5551. ; 36:2, s. 476-481
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We studied clinical and immunological outcome of Covid-19 in consecutive CLL patients from a well-defined area during month 1–13 of the pandemic. Sixty patients (median age 71 y, range 43–97) were identified. Median CIRS was eight (4–20). Patients had indolent CLL (n = 38), had completed (n = 12) or ongoing therapy (n = 10). Forty-six patients (77%) were hospitalized due to severe Covid-19 and 11 were admitted to ICU. Severe Covid-19 was equally distributed across subgroups irrespective of age, gender, BMI, CLL status except CIRS (p < 0.05). Fourteen patients (23%) died; age ≥75 y was the only significant risk factor (p < 0.05, multivariate analysis with limited power). Comparing month 1–6 vs 7–13 of the pandemic, deaths were numerically reduced from 32% to 18%, ICU admission from 37% to 15% whereas hospitalizations remained frequent (86% vs 71%). Seroconversion occurred in 33/40 patients (82%) and anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were detectable at six and 12 months in 17/22 and 8/11 patients, respectively. Most (13/17) had neutralizing antibodies and 19/28 had antibodies in saliva. SARS-CoV-2-specific T-cells (ELISpot) were detected in 14/17 patients. Covid-19 continued to result in high admission even among consecutive and young early- stage CLL patients. A robust and durable B and/or T cell immunity was observed in most convalescents.

  • RIFINs are adhesins implicated in severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nature Medicine. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1078-8956 .- 1546-170X. ; 21:4, s. 314-317
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rosetting is a virulent Plasmodium falciparum phenomenon associated with severe malaria. Here we demonstrate that P. falciparum-encoded repetitive interspersed families of polypeptides (RIFINs) are expressed on the surface of infected red blood cells (iRBCs), bind to RBCs-preferentially of blood group A-to form large rosettes and mediate microvascular binding of iRBCs. We suggest that RIFINs have a fundamental role in the development of severe malaria and thereby contribute to the varying global distribution of ABO blood groups in the human population.

  • Acute mitogen-activated protein kinase 1/2 inhibition improves functional recovery and vascular changes after ischaemic stroke in rat-monitored by 9.4 T magnetic resonance imaging
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Acta Physiologica. - : Wiley. - 1748-1716 .- 1748-1708. ; 223:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: The aim was to evaluate the beneficial effect of early mitogen-activated protein kinase (MEK)1/2 inhibition administered at a clinical relevant time-point using the transient middle cerebral artery occlusion model and a dedicated rodent magnetic resonance imaging system (9.4T) to monitor cerebrovascular changes non-invasively for 2 weeks. Method: Transient middle cerebral artery occlusion was induced in male rats for two hours followed by reperfusion. The specific MEK1/2 inhibitor U0126 was administered ip at 6 and 24 hours post-reperfusion. Neurological functions were evaluated by 6- and 28-point tests. 9.4 T magnetic resonance imaging was used to monitor morphological infarct changes at day 2, 8 and 14 after stroke and to evaluate cerebral perfusion at day 14. Immunohistochemistry evaluation of Ki67 was performed 14 days post-stroke. Results: U0126 improved long-term behavioural outcome and significantly reduced infarct size. In addition, cerebral perfusion in U0126-treated animals was improved compared to the vehicle group. Immunohistochemistry showed a significant increase in Ki67+ cells in U0126-treated animals compared to the vehicle group. Conclusion: Early MEK1/2 inhibition improves long-term functional outcome, promotes recovery processes after stroke and most importantly provides a realistic time window for therapy.

  • Local atomic structure of Fe-Ni/V multilayer nanostructures : EXAFS spectroscopy and synchrotron radiation data
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Structural Chemistry. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0022-4766 .- 1573-8779. ; 49:1, s. S129-S137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fe, Ni, and V K EXAFS spectroscopic experiments were carried out at the European Synchrotron Radiation Center (ESRF) in the fluorescent mode on the 26 angstrom line with the use of the [(Fe82Ni18)(5)/V-6](25) and [(Fe82Ni18)(10)/V-6](25) samples of multilayer nanoheterostructures prepared by magnetron spraying (at Uppsala University). The partial interatomic distances were determined by the regularization technique. The existing distortions of the bee lattice in (Fe82N18)/V multilayer nanostructures depend strongly on the thickness of the ferromagnetic layers of the permalloy and also affect vanadium layers.
