  • A New Gårdsten: A Case Study of a Swedish Municipal Housing Company
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Housing Policy. ; 9:2, s. 223-239
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to make a preliminary analysis of the Municipal Housing Company (MHC) Gårdstensbostäder’s struggle to transform a disadvantaged district of Gårdsten in the city of Göteborg, Sweden. We analyse data gathered from interviews and documents. The analytical frame is mainly inspired by Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of field, capital and symbolic violence. The situation of Gårdstensbostäder is special. On the one hand, the company has a commission to develop the district of Gårdsten. On the other hand, it only administers and lets dwellings in this single district. The fate of the company is, therefore, intimately related to the development of Gårdsten. The company does much to promote the local community. It refuses, however, to provide new housing for people on welfare. The direction taken by Gårdstensbostäder implies a deflection of an important aspect of its responsibility for vulnerable groups on the housing market. This development can only be understood in relation to the city’s interest of improving its position in the field of transnational city regions and the MHC’s interest of conserving its dominant position in the field of housing companies. It is too early to say with any certainty whether this is the path other MHCs will embark upon.

    • The emergence of Liberation theology is often related to the name of Gustavo Gutiérrez. He is believed to have coined the name ”Theology of Liberation” and to have been the first to discuss the relation between liberation and salvation, the core idea of liberation theology. Supposedly, he did both these things in a speech he gave in the Peruvian town of Chimbote, in July 1968. In the article, it is however argued that others preceded him. One of those was Gilberto Giménez, a theologian and sociologist from Paraguay. By the time of July 1968, Giménez had already used the name ”Theology of Liberation”, discussed the relation between liberation and salvation, and given a preliminary liberation theological analysis of the mystery of both Christmas and Easter.

  • Gustavo Gutiérrez: The Construction of a Legend
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Association for the Sociology of Religion (ASR), 2007 Annual Meeting "Striving for a Better World: Religion and Social Change", New York City, 10-12 August.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Gustavo Gutiérrez is probably the most prominent Latin American theologian. He is frequently recognized as “the father of liberation theology”. According to the dominant notion of the birth of the theology of liberation Gutiérrez coined the name “Theology of Liberation” and was the first to discuss the relation between salvation and human liberation. Supposedly, he did this in a talk he gave in the Peruvian city of Chimbote, in July 1968. His theological ideas are said to have come to him while living and working among poor people in Lima. In addition, Gutiérrez himself is declared to come from the poor. My research shows that there are good reasons to question these “facts”. Rather than representing a biographical reality, these “facts” constitute essential elements of a legend. In the paper it is argued that the legend rose mainly due to the logic of the religious field, and to the struggle for religious reproduction.

  • Om befrielseteologins uppkomst i Latinamerika. En sociologisk analys av religiös förändring. : On the Rise of Liberation Theology in Latin America. A Sociological Analysis of Religious Change.
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The overall purpose of the present study is to contribute to our understanding of religious change and to an explanation of the phenomenon. The emergence of the theology of liberation is an important case of religious change in Latin America during the 1960s. Hence, the focus of this study is on how and why the theology of liberation emerged. The theoretical framework is primarily based on the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s key concepts of field, habitus and capital. This framework is used as an alternative to the dominant theories of religious change, that is, the secularization theory and the theory of religious economies. The data come from a variety of sources, including interviews, electronic and conventional letters, archives, books and articles. The most important conclusion is that Liberation Theology emerged within the Catholic Student Movement, as a product of collective work. More specifically, it arose as part of a reproduction strategy, aimed at defending the Church’s position in the national fields of power and at strengthening the Catholic Student Movement in the struggle for symbolic power at the universities. In the early 1960s, the Catholic Student Movement thought that the primary threat to the Church came from Marxism and Marxist groups. This threat was fought by means of involvement in the struggle for social change and development. Later, the commitment to development became a commitment to liberation. This commitment was shared with Marxist groups, but the Student Movement members simultaneously distinguished themselves from these groups as militant Catholics. The theology of liberation emerged when the Catholic Student Movement discovered new aspects of the Gospel as a result of its commitment to liberation, of its efforts to mobilize more Christians in the struggle for liberation, and of its pastoral care for radical Catholic students.

    • The Peruvian theologian Gustavo Gutiérrez is frequently recognized as ‘the father of liberation theology’. The epithet has been given to him since he is believed to have coined the name ‘Theology of Liberation’ and to have been the first to discuss the relationship between salvation and human liberation. Supposedly he did both these things in a talk he gave in the Peruvian city of Chimbote in July 1968. The empirical material shows, however, that others preceded Gutiérrez both with the name and the central ideas of liberation theology. Thus, the notion of Gutiérrez as the first liberation theologian does not represent a historical fact. In the article it is argued that several simultaneous and concurrent forces within the religious field made Gutiérrez the father of liberation theology.

  • We are Benchmarking all the Time: The Refashioning of the Municipal Housing Companies in the City of Gothenburg, Sweden
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: European Network for Housing Research (ENHR) International Conference in Rotterdam "Sustainable Urban Areas", 25-28 June.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Is the refashioning of the municipal housing companies (MHCs) the beginning of the end of public housing in Sweden? In terms of social responsibility, how is one to understand the new direction of these companies? The purpose of this paper is to make a preliminary analysis of the new role and direction of the municipal housing companies in Göteborg, in particular in the district of Greenhill. We analyze data gathered from interviews and documents. The empirical material was collected within a research project in progress, which looks at public housing and safety in three stigmatized districts of Göteborg. The analysis is mainly inspired by Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of field, habitus and capital. The new role of the municipal housing companies is viewed as a reproduction strategy, aimed at maintaining a dominant position in the field of rental housing companies. The strategy has evolved in a situation where the former financial privileges of public housing have been revoked, and the municipal housing companies, to an increasing extent, are forced to attain great economic strength. The situation of Greenhill Dwellings, a local municipal housing company, is somewhat special. In contrast to other municipal housing companies, they only administer and let dwellings in one single district – Greenhill. The fate of Greenhill Dwellings is, therefore, intimately related to the development of Greenhill. The Greenhill Dwellings do much to promote the local community. They refuse, however, to provide new housing for people on welfare. Moreover, when a child of a tenant commits a crime, their policy is to evict the family. The direction taken by Greenhill Dwellings implies, among all, a deflection of their responsibility for vulnerable groups on the housing market. It is too early to say with any certainty whether this is the path other MHCs will embark upon. If they do, they risk to liquidate themselves, since this kind of social responsibility is a constituent element of the MHCs.

  • Victim Support and Social Solidarity
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: ISA World Congress of Sociology, July 11–17, 2010. RC29, Session 3: Cultural Criminology.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The multidisciplinary research and evaluation project Victim support in Gothenburg comprehensively surveys the public and the private providers of victim support services in Gothenburg, and evaluates and examines the publicly financed victim support services. Data have been gathered through telephone interviews with public as well as private providers of victim support services, and face-to-face interviews with publicly financed providers of such support services and different categories of victims of crime. The focus of the paper is on the social function of victim support. From the perspective of Emile Durkheim, Randall Collins, and Mary Douglas, and a context of growing social inequalities, it is argued that victim support on a societal level can be viewed as a ritual that works parallel with and strengthens the solidarity-producing effect of crime-punishment rituals. In the discourse of some of the providers of victim support services, victim of crime is implicitly related to concepts of purity and pollution. Hence, on an individual level, victim support, in particular counselling, can be viewed as a ritual through which the victim is purified from the pollution that the crime has caused. As a ritual of purity, victim support thus benefits the victim’s reintegration into society.
