  • Squeezing and Multimode Entanglement of Surface Acoustic Wave Phonons
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: PRX Quantum. - 2691-3399. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exploiting multiple modes in a quantum acoustic device could enable applications in quantum information in a hardware-efficient setup, including quantum simulation in a synthetic dimension and continuous-variable quantum computing with cluster states. We develop a multimode surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonator with a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) integrated in one of the Bragg reflectors. The interaction with the SQUID-shunted mirror gives rise to coupling between the more than 20 accessible resonator modes. We exploit this coupling to demonstrate two-mode squeezing of SAW phonons, as well as four-mode multipartite entanglement. Our results open avenues for continuous-variable quantum computing in a compact hybrid quantum system.

  • Retention of Electronic Conductivity in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 Nanostructures Using a SrCuO2 Capping Layer
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Applied. - : American Physical Society. - 2331-7019. ; 6:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interface between two wide band-gap insulators, LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) offers a unique playground to study the interplay and competitions between different ordering phenomena in a strongly correlated two- dimensional electron gas. Recent studies of the LAO/STO interface reveal the inhomogeneous nature of the 2DEG that strongly influences electrical-transport properties. Nanowires needed in future applications may be adversely affected, and our aim is, thus, to produce a more homogeneous electron gas. In this work, we demonstrate that nanostructures fabricated in the quasi-2DEG at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface, capped with a SrCuO2 layer, retain their electrical resistivity and mobility independent of the structure size, ranging from 100 nm to 30 mu m. This is in contrast to noncapped LAO/STO structures, where the room-temperature electrical resistivity significantly increases when the structure size becomes smaller than 1 mu m. High-resolution intermodulation electrostatic force microscopy reveals an inhomogeneous surface potential with "puddles" of a characteristic size of 130 nm in the noncapped samples and a more uniform surface potential with a larger characteristic size of the puddles in the capped samples. In addition, capped structures show superconductivity below 200 mK and nonlinear currentvoltage characteristics with a clear critical current observed up to 700 mK. Our findings shed light on the complicated nature of the 2DEG at the LAO/STO interface and may also be used for the design of electronic devices.

  • Background-Force Compensation in Dynamic Atomic Force Microscopy
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Applied. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2331-7019. ; 7:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background forces are linear long-range interactions of the cantilever body with its surroundings that must be compensated for in order to reveal tip-surface force, the quantity of interest for determining material properties in atomic force microscopy. We provide a mathematical derivation of a method to compensate for background forces, apply it to experimental data, and discuss how to include background forces in simulation. Our method, based on linear-response theory in the frequency domain, provides a general way of measuring and compensating for any background force and it can be readily applied to different force reconstruction methods in dynamic AFM.

  • Fast multifrequency measurement of nonlinear conductance
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Low noise measurement of small currents in nanometer-scale junctions is of central importance to the characterization of novel high-performance devices and materials for applications ranging from energy harvesting and energy conversion to topological materials for quantum computers. The high resistance of these junctions and the stray capacitance of their measurement leads impose speed limitations (tens of seconds) on the traditional methods of measuring their nonlinear conductance, making detailed investigations of change with external fields or maps of variation over a surface impractical, if not impossible. Here we demonstrate fast (milliseconds) reconstruction of nonlinear current-voltage characteristics from phase-coherent multifrequency lock-in data using the inverse Fourier transform. The measurement technique allows for separation of the galvanic and displacement currents in the junction and easy cancellation of parasitic displacement current due to the measurement leads. We use the method to reveal nanometer-scale variations in the electrical transport properties of organic photovoltaic and semiconducting thin films. The method has broad applicability and its wide-spread implementation promises advancement in high-speed and high-resolution characterization for nanotechnology.

  • Fast Multifrequency Measurement of Nonlinear Conductance
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Applied. - : American Physical Society. - 2331-7019. ; 11:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We describe a phase-coherent multifrequency lock-in measurement technique that uses the inverse Fourier transform to reconstruct the nonlinear current-voltage characteristic of a nanoscale junction. The method provides separation of the galvanic and displacement currents in the junction and easy cancellation of the parasitic displacement current from the measurement leads. These two features allow us to overcome traditional limitations imposed by the low conductance of the junction and the high capacitance of the leads, thus providing an increase in measurement speed of several orders of magnitude. We demonstrate the method in the context of conductive atomic force microscopy, acquiring current-voltage characteristics at every pixel while scanning at standard imaging speed.

  • Intermodulation electrostatic force microscopy for imaging surface photo-voltage
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 105:14, s. 143113-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate an alternative to Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy for imaging surface potential. The open-loop, single-pass technique applies a low-frequency AC voltage to the atomic force microscopy tip while driving the cantilever near its resonance frequency. Frequency mixing due to the nonlinear capacitance gives intermodulation products of the two drive frequencies near the cantilever resonance, where they are measured with high signal to noise ratio. Analysis of this intermodulation response allows for quantitative reconstruction of the contact potential difference. We derive the theory of the method, validate it with numerical simulation and a control experiment, and we demonstrate its utility for fast imaging of the surface photo-voltage on an organic photovoltaic material.

  • Intermodulation spectroscopy as an alternative to pump-probe for the measurement of fast dynamics at the nanometer scale
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We present an alternative approach to pump-probe spectroscopy for measuring fast charge dynamics with an atomic force microscope (AFM). Our approach is based on coherent multifrequency lock-in measurement of the intermodulation between a mechanical drive and an optical or electrical excitation. In response to the excitation, the charge dynamics of the sample is reconstructed by fitting a theoretical model to the measured frequency spectrum of the electrostatic force near resonance of the AFM cantilever. We discuss the time resolution, which in theory is limited only by the measurement time, but in practice is of order one nanosecond for standard cantilevers and imaging speeds. We verify the method with simulations and demonstrate it with a control experiment, achieving a time resolution of 20 ns in ambient conditions, limited by thermal noise.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nano letters (Print). - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6984 .- 1530-6992. ; 16:9, s. 5934-5937
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use a recently developed scanning probe technique to image with high spatial resolution the injection and extraction of charge around individual surface-modified aluminum oxide nanoparticles embedded in a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) matrix. We find that the experimental results are consistent with a simple band structure model where localized electronic states are available in the band gap (trap states) in the vicinity of the nanoparticles. This work offers experimental support to a previously proposed mechanism for enhanced insulating properties of nanocomposite LDPE and provides a powerful experimental tool to further investigate such properties.

  • Probing nonlinear electrical properties at the nanoscale : Studies in multifrequency AFM
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Nanostructured materials promise great advances in diverse and active research fields such as energy harvesting and storage, corrosion prevention and high-density memories. Electrical characterization at the nanometer scale is key to understanding and optimizing the performance of these materials, and therefore central to the progress of nanotechnology. One of the most versatile tools for this purpose is the atomic force microscope (AFM), thanks to its ability to image surfaces with high spatial resolution. In this thesis we present several multifrequency techniques for AFM. Intermodulation electrostatic force microscopy (ImEFM) measures the potential of a surface with low noise and high spatial resolution. In contrast to traditionally available methods, ImEFM does not use a feedback-controlled bias to measure the surface potential, and is therefore suitable to measurements in liquid environments. Removing feedback allows the applied bias to be used for investigating charge injection and extraction on nanocomposite materials. Intermodulation conductive AFM (ImCFM) measures the current-voltage characteristic of a sample at every point of an AFM image. ImCFM is able to separate the galvanic and displacement contributions to the measured current, improving the measurement speed by four orders of magnitude compared to previously available methods. We finally demonstrate an alternative approach to pump-probe spectroscopy, which allows the AFM to measure electrical charge dynamics with a time resolution approaching the nanosecond range. These techniques are based on intermodulation spectroscopy, and they demonstrate the power and flexibility of measuring and analyzing nonlinear response in the frequency domain. The nonlinearity of the tip-surface force is used to concentrate response in a narrow band around the resonance of the AFM cantilever, where force measurement sensitivity is at the thermal limit. In this narrow band, we perform coherent measurements at multiple frequencies by exploiting the stability of a single reference oscillation. The power of the multifrequency approach is nicely demonstrated in a general method for measuring and compensating background forces, i.e. long-range linear forces that act on the body of the AFM probe. This compensation is necessary to reveal the the true force between the surface and the AFM tip. We show the effect of the compensation on soft polymer materials, where the background forces are typically strongest.

  • Ingår i: Soft Matter. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 1744-683X .- 1744-6848. ; 14:19, s. 3998-4006
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We perform a comparative study of dynamic force measurements using an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) on the same soft polymer blend samples in both air and liquid environments. Our quantitative analysis starts with calibration of the same cantilever in both environments. Intermodulation AFM (ImAFM) is used to measure dynamic force quadratures on the same sample. We validate the accuracy of the reconstructed dynamic force quadratures by numerical simulation of a realistic model of the cantilever in liquid. In spite of the very low quality factor of this resonance, we find excellent agreement between experiment and simulation. A recently developed moving surface model explains the measured force quadrature curves on the soft polymer, in both air and liquid.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nanoscale Advances. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2516-0230. ; 3:15, s. 4388-4394

    • The electrical properties of an all-oxide core-shell ZnO-Co3O4nanorod heterojunction were studied in the dark and under UV-vis illumination. The contact potential difference and current distribution maps were obtained utilizing new methods in dynamic multifrequency atomic force microscopy (AFM) such as electrostatic and conductive intermodulation AFM. Light irradiation modified the electrical properties of the nanorod heterojunction. The new techniques are able to follow the instantaneous local variation of the photocurrent, giving a two-dimensional (2D) map of the current-voltage curves and correlating the electrical and morphological features of the heterostructured core-shell nanorods.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AIP Publishing. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 91:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An important device for modulation and frequency translation in the field of circuit quantum electrodynamics is the in-phase and quadrature mixer, an analog component for which calibration is necessary to achieve optimal performance. In this paper, we introduce techniques originally developed for wireless communication applications to calibrate upconversion and downconversion mixers. A Kalman filter together with a controllable carrier frequency offset calibrates both mixers without removing them from the embedding measurement infrastructure. These techniques can be embedded into room temperature control electronics and hopefully find widespread use as circuit quantum electrodynamics devices continue to grow in complexity.

  • Robust Preparation of Wigner-Negative States with Optimized SNAP-Displacement Sequences
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: PRX Quantum. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2691-3399. ; 3:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hosting nonclassical states of light in three-dimensional microwave cavities has emerged as a promising paradigm for continuous-variable quantum information processing. Here we experimentally demonstrate high-fidelity generation of a range of Wigner-negative states useful for quantum computation, such as Schrodinger-cat states, binomial states, Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill states, as well as cubic phase states. The latter states have been long sought after in quantum optics and have never been achieved experimentally before. We use a sequence of interleaved selective number-dependent arbitrary phase (SNAP) gates and displacements. We optimize the state preparation in two steps. First we use a gradient-descent algorithm to optimize the parameters of the SNAP and displacement gates. Then we optimize the envelope of the pulses implementing the SNAP gates. Our results show that this way of creating highly nonclassical states in a harmonic oscillator is robust to fluctuations of the system parameters such as the qubit frequency and the dispersive shift.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 87:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Atomic force microscope (AFM) users often calibrate the spring constants of cantilevers using functionality built into individual instruments. This calibration is performed without reference to a global standard, hindering the robust comparison of force measurements reported by different laboratories. Here, we describe a virtual instrument (an internet-based initiative) whereby users from all laboratories can instantly and quantitatively compare their calibration measurements to those of others-standardising AFM force measurements-and simultaneously enabling non-invasive calibration of AFM cantilevers of any geometry. This global calibration initiative requires no additional instrumentation or data processing on the part of the user. It utilises a single website where users upload currently available data. A proof-of-principle demonstration of this initiative is presented using measured data from five independent laboratories across three countries, which also allows for an assessment of current calibration.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Mechanical systems and signal processing. - : Academic Press. - 0888-3270 .- 1096-1216. ; 101, s. 38-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a polynomial force reconstruction of the tip-sample interaction force in Atomic Force Microscopy. The method uses analytical expressions for the slow-time amplitude and phase evolution, obtained from time-averaging over the rapidly oscillating part of the cantilever dynamics. The slow-time behavior can be easily obtained in either the numerical simulations or the experiment in which a high-Q resonator is perturbed by a weak nonlinearity and a periodic driving force. A direct fit of the theoretical expressions to the simulated and experimental data gives the best-fit parameters for the force model. The method combines and complements previous works (Platz et al., 2013; Forchheimer et al., 2012 [2]) and it allows for computationally more efficient parameter mapping with AFM. Results for the simulated asymmetric piecewise linear force and VdW-DMT force models are compared with the reconstructed polynomial force and show a good agreement. It is also shown that the analytical amplitude and phase modulation equations fit well with the experimental data.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We describe a digital microwave platform called Presto, designed for measurement and control of multiple quantum bits (qubits) and based on the third-generation radio-frequency system on a chip. Presto uses direct digital synthesis to create signals up to 9 GHz on 16 synchronous output ports, while synchronously analyzing responses on 16 input ports. Presto has 16 DC-bias outputs, four inputs and four outputs for digital triggers or markers, and two continuous-wave outputs for synthesizing frequencies up to 15 GHz. Scaling to a large number of qubits is enabled through deterministic synchronization of multiple Presto units. A Python application programming interface configures a firmware for synthesis and analysis of pulses, coordinated by an event sequencer. The analysis integrates template matching (matched filtering) and low-latency (184-254 ns) feedback to enable a wide range of multi-qubit experiments. We demonstrate Presto's capabilities with experiments on a sample consisting of two superconducting qubits connected via a flux-tunable coupler. We show single-shot readout and active reset of a single qubit; randomized benchmarking of single-qubit gates showing 99.972% fidelity, limited by the coherence time of the qubit; and calibration of a two-qubit iSWAP gate.

    • Non-invasive thermal noise calibration of both torsional and flexural eigenmodes is performed on numerous cantilevers of 10 different types. We show that for all tipless and short-tipped cantilevers, the ratio of torsional to flexural mode stiffness is given by the ratio of their resonant frequency times a constant, unique to that cantilever type. By determining this constant, we enable a calibration of the torsional eigenmode, starting from a calibration of the flexural eigenmode. Our results are well motivated from beam theory, and we verify them with finite element simulation.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: FRONTIERS IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING-SWITZERLAND. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 2297-3079. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study high-speed friction on soft polymer materials by measuring the amplitude dependence of cyclic lateral forces on the atomic force microscope (AFM) tip as it slides on the surface with fixed contact force. The resulting dynamic force quadrature curves separate the elastic and viscous contributions to the lateral force, revealing a transition from stick-slip to free-sliding motion as the velocity increases. We explain force quadratures and describe how they are measured, and we show results for a variety of soft materials. The results differ substantially from the measurements on hard materials, showing hysteresis in the force quadrature curves that we attribute to the finite relaxation time of viscoelastic surface deformation.

    • Friction is a complicated phenomenon involving nonlinear dynamics at different length and time scales. Understanding its microscopic origin requires methods for measuring force on nanometer-scale asperities sliding at velocities reaching centimetres per second. Despite enormous advances in experimental technique, this combination of small length scale and high velocity remain elusive. We present a technique for rapidly measuring the frictional forces on a single asperity over a velocity range from zero to several centimetres per second. At each image pixel we obtain the velocity dependence of both conservative and dissipative forces, revealing the transition from stick-slip to smooth sliding friction. We explain measurements on graphite using a modified Prandtl-Tomlinson model, including the damped elastic deformation of the asperity. With its improved force sensitivity and small sliding amplitude, our method enables rapid and detailed surface mapping of the velocity dependence of frictional forces with less than 10 nm spatial resolution.

    • The interaction between a rapidly oscillating atomic-force-microscope tip and a soft-material surface is described with use of both elastic and viscous forces in a moving-surface model. We present the simplest form of this model, motivating our derivation with the models ability to capture the impact dynamics of the tip and sample with an interaction consisting of two components: interfacial or surface force, and bulk or volumetric force. Analytic solutions to the piecewise linear model identify characteristic time constants, providing a physical explanation for the hysteresis observed in the measured dynamic-force-quadrature curves. Numerical simulation is used to fit the model to experimental data, and excellent agreement is found with a variety of different samples. The model parameters form a dimensionless impact-rheology factor, giving a quantitative physical number to characterize a viscoelastic surface that does not depend on the tip shape or cantilever frequency.

    • Detailed knowledge of nonlinearity in superconducting microwave circuits is required for the optimal control of their quantum state. We present a general method to precisely characterize this nonlinearity to very high order. Our method is based on intermodulation spectroscopy at microwave frequencies and does not require DC-connection or DC-measurement of an on-chip reference structure. We give a theoretical derivation of the method and we validate it by reconstructing a known nonlinearity from simulated data. We experimentally demonstrate the reconstruction of the unknown nonlinear current-phase relation of a microwave resonator with superconducting nanowires.
