  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0921-898X .- 1573-0913. ; 39:2, s. 289-300
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we suggest that the spillover of knowledge may not occur automatically as typically assumed in models of endogenous growth. Rather, a mechanism is required to serve as a conduit for the spillover and commercialization of knowledge from the source creating it, to the firms actually commercializing the new ideas. In this paper, entrepreneurship is identified as one such mechanism facilitating the spillover of knowledge. Using a panel of entrepreneurship data from 18 countries, we provide empirical evidence that, in addition to measures of Research & Development and human capital, entrepreneurial activity also serves to promote economic growth.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - : Springer. - 0921-898X .- 1573-0913. ; 48:1, s. 1-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Professor Philippe Aghion is the 2016 recipient of the Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research, consisting of 100,000 Euros and a statuette designed by the internationally renowned Swedish sculptor Carl Milles. He is one of the most influential researchers worldwide in economics in the last couple of decades. His research has advanced our understanding of the relationship between firm-level innovation, entry and exit on the one hand, and productivity and growth on the other. Aghion has thus accomplished to bridge theoretical macroeconomic growth models with a more complete and consistent microeconomic setting. He is one of the founding fathers of the pioneering and original contribution referred to as Schumpeterian growth theory. Philippe Aghion has not only contributed with more sophisticated theoretical models, but also provided empirical evidence regarding the importance of entrepreneurial endeavours for societal prosperity, thereby initiating a more nuanced policy discussion concerning the interdependencies between entrepreneurship, competition, wealth and growth.

  • The knowledge spillover theory of entrepreneurship
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0921-898X .- 1573-0913. ; 32:1, s. 15-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Contemporary theories of entrepreneurship generally focus on the recognition of opportunities and the decision to exploit them. Although the entrepreneurship literature treats opportunities as exogenous, the prevailing theory of economic growth suggests they are endogenous. This paper advances the microeconomic foundations of endogenous growth theory by developing a knowledge spillover theory of entrepreneurship. Knowledge created endogenously results in knowledge spillovers, which allow entrepreneurs to identify and exploit opportunities.

  • The Entrepreneruship-Philanthropy Nexus : Implication for internationalization
  • 2005
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper examines how Sweden and the United States have been impacted by philanthropicactivities, commercialization of university-based knowledge and internationalentrepreneurship. The analysis comprises a detailed case study of Swedish and U.S.universities, as well as a statistical analysis of the impact of philanthropy on economicgrowth. The results show that the United States has prompted a university system based oncompetition and variety, with an emphasis on philanthropy, promoting knowledge creation.International entrepreneurship has been an important mechanism by which this knowledge isglobalized leading to increased economic growth. Conversely, Swedish universities werecharacterized by less commercialized R&D and weak links to the commercial sector, rootedtraditionally in dependence on tax-financed and homogenous university structure. TheSwedish model has begun to change with important implications for development in smallerdomestic markets. The analysis has important implications for knowledge creation as asource of economic growth through international entrepreneurship taking advantage ofglobalization, especially for smaller countries.

  • Creative Destruction and Productivity : Entrepreneurship by Type, Sector and Sequence
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Entrepreneurship and Public Policy. - : Emerald. - 2045-2101. ; 1:2, s. 125-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – Schumpeter claimed the entrepreneur to be instrumental for creative destruction and industrial dynamics. Entrepreneurial entry serves to transform and revitalize industries, thereby enhancing their competitiveness. The purpose of this paper is to investigate if entry of new firms influences productivity amongst incumbent firms, and the extent to which altered productivity can be attributed sector and time specific effects.Design/methodology/approach – Implementing a unique dataset the paper estimates a firm-level production function in which the productivity of incumbent firms is modeled as a function of firm attributes and regional entrepreneurship activity.Findings – The analysis finds support for positive productivity effects of entrepreneurship on incumbent firms, albeit the effect varies over time, what the authors refer to as a “delayed entry effect”. An immediate negative influence on productivity is followed by a positive effect several years after the initial entry. Moreover, the productivity of incumbent firms in services sectors appears to be more responsive to regional entrepreneurship, as compared to the productivity of manufacturing firms.Originality/value – The paper employs a firm-level production function approach allowing for time lags of the effect of entrepreneurship. The unique data implemented allow the authors to identify genuinely new ventures as compared to those associated with reorganizations of existing businesses, thereby overcoming much of data deficiencies in previous studies. In addition, data are distributed on Swedish functional labor market regions.

  • Academic Entrepreneurship : The Bayh-Dole Act versus the Professor's Privilege
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Industrial & labor relations review. - : SAGE PUBLICATIONS INC. - 0019-7939 .- 2162-271X. ; 72:5, s. 1094-1122
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Is the Bayh-Dole intellectual property regime associated with more and better academic entrepreneurship than the Professor's Privilege regime? The authors examine data on US PhDs in the natural sciences, engineering, and medical fields who became entrepreneurs in 1993-2006 and compare this to similar data from Sweden. They find that, in both countries, those with an academic background have lower rates of entry into entrepreneurship than do those with a non-academic background. The relative rate of academics starting entrepreneurial firms is slightly lower in the United States than in Sweden. Moreover, the mean economic gains from becoming an entrepreneur are negative, both for PhDs originating in academia and for non-academic settings in both countries. Analysis indicates that selection into entrepreneurship occurs from the lower part of the ability distribution among academics. The results suggest that policies supporting entrepreneurial decisions by younger, tenure-track academics may be more effective than are general incentives to increase academic entrepreneurship.

  • Spin-offs: Why geography matters
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Economic Geography. - : Oxford. - 1468-2702 .- 1468-2710. ; 16:2, s. 273--303
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on unique data covering individuals, firms, industries and regions for the 1999–2005 period, we contribute with new knowledge concerning the impact of regional variables on spin-offs. Implementing a large number of controls, as well as different estimation techniques and robustness tests, we show that Jacobian externalities have a positive effect on spin-offs. Moreover, using an entropy measure to disentangle unrelated and related variety (RV), we conclude that the effect is confined to RV. These findings are likely to be associated with strong welfare effects: a standard deviation increase (decrease) in related (unrelated) variety increases spin-off propensity by approximately 25%. Other variables are shown to have economic effects of a similar magnitude but may have a different effect across sectors. Sensitivity analyses indicate that the impact of other determinants proposed in the literature (e.g., Marshallian externalities and scale effects) is too small to be detected.

  • Why Do Some Multinational Corporations Relocate Their Headquarters Overseas?
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Strategic Management Journal. - : Wiley. - 0143-2095 .- 1097-0266. ; 27:7, s. 681-700
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the decision by a multinational corporation (MNC) to relocate its business unit and/or corporate HQ overseas. We argue that business unit HQs move overseas in response to changes in the internal configuration of their unit's activities and the demands of the product markets in which they operate, whereas corporate HQs move overseas in response to the demands of external stakeholders, in particular global financial markets and shareholders. Using data on 125 business unit HQs and 35 corporate HQs, we test and find support for these arguments. The research highlights important differences between corporate- and business-level strategy, and it suggests ways in which the theory of the MNC needs to be reconsidered.

  • The wealth of regions : geographic concentration , entrepreneurship and regional growth
  • 2007
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis consists of three individual essays and an introductory chapter. The essays contribute to the current vein of empirical literature on economic geography and entrepreneurship. In two of the three essays the empirical analysis is preformed using panel data cross tabulated over years, regions and industries; whereas the third essay use data distributed over years and regions. The first essay implements a measure of geographic concentration and investigates the extent of concentration in Swedish industries and the relationship to economic growth specified as labour productivity. The second essay focuses on the composition of industry concentration. Using a similar measure as in the first essay the co-location of Swedish industries are investigated as well as the relationship to economic growth. The third essay explores the connection between entrepreneurship and regional growth – measured as employment growth – in Sweden and the U.S.

  • Academic Entrepreneurship : Social norms, university culture and policies
  • 2007
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Is a shift in intellectual property rights to universities the key instrument in increasing com-mercialization of publicly funded research? How much can actually be learned from the U.S. system, disregarding the ongoing debate as to whether the U.S. do actually outperform Europe in terms of commercializing university based research? Taking Sweden as a role model I claim that this policy will not work. This allegation stems from the analysis of a unique data-base giving individual university researchers view on participation in commercialization of public research, their commercialization experiences, and the obstacles researchers claim exist to increase academic entrepreneurship. Despite researchers positive attitudes towards engag-ing in commercial activities, the university culture, weak incentive structures and badly man-aged support facilities impede the creation of efficient links to markets. I conclude that meas-ures must be taken at primarily the national level, but also at the university level, to enhance commercialization activities.

  • Agglomeration, Diversity and Regional Growth : The effects of poly-industrial versus mono-industrial agglomerations
  • 2006
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The objective of this paper is to empirically examine the importance of the structure of agglomeration on productivity and growth. To accomplish this we will include the degree of co-agglomeration of similar industries as an explanatory variable in the empirical analysis, while simultaneously controlling for the degree of industry-specific agglomeration. To the best of our knowledge, the impact of co-agglomerated industries on productivity has not previously been investigated. The empirical analysis confirms a positive statistical relationship between interdependent and co-located industries on labour productivity.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Industry, Competition and Trade. - USA : Springer Nature. - 1566-1679 .- 1573-7012. ; 9:3, s. 197-217
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the relationship between agglomeration economies and relative wage costs in influencing location of multinational corporations. An inflow of firms to certain regions and industries is likely to increase demand for labor. If mobility of labor is low increased costs can be expected to deter additional inflows of firms, albeit agglomeration economies may compensate for higher wages. Despite its important policy implications this relationship has to our knowledge not been exposed to empirical testing. The empirical analysis finds that foreign direct investment has become increasingly sensitive to differences in wage cost across industrialized countries, but also that agglomeration economies related to knowledge externalities positively influences higher costs. The relative strength of these two forces impacts the spatial distribution of production.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Studies in Entrepreneurship. - Cham : Springer Nature. ; , s. 95-130
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Innovation is increasingly considered the key to elevating prosperity and securing sustainable long-term growth. The few last decades have also witnessed a refinement of previous growth models to include investments in education by individuals and R&D by firms. Better educated individuals and increased expenditure on R&D are shown to result in increased innovation and accelerated growth in endogenous growth models. This finding has spurred policy makers, most recently the OECD, the EU commission, and other organizations, to design innovation strategies to meet future growth and welfare challenges. Such strategies have also trickled down to the country level.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Business Review. - : Elsevier. - 0969-5931 .- 1873-6149. ; 28:1, s. 60-73

    • The concept born global firms has gained a spectacular increase in interest from both academic and political circles. Rigorous quantitative treatment of born global firms are however rare in the international business/economics literature. Implementing unique data on all Swedish start-ups during 1998–2008 in the manufacturing sector, we conclude that born global firms are a very rare event, that their prevalence seems invariant to time, and that they perform similar to other matched “twin” firms with regard to profitability and productivity but report a considerably higher growth in employment and sales. These results are robust to a wider definition of born global firms and to the timing of performance measurements.

  • Ingår i: Oxford review of economic policy. - : Oxford University Press. - 0266-903X .- 1460-2121. ; 39:4, s. 667-679
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The challenges of combatting climate change are unprecedented and now very urgent. Current approaches are not working fast enough. This paper, and this journal issue, conceive of the challenge as one of non-marginal structural and institutional change. Several different conceptual frameworks and pluralist theories are considered, emanating from complexity theory, economics, natural sciences, political economy, and strategy. These are deployed to identify potential accelerators, including synergies between climate action and other key political issues, and beneficial non-linear dynamics such as shifts in consumer preferences and technology learning curves. The delays in action also mean that removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is now necessary, and even unconventional geoengineering approaches may need to be considered. A pluralist and practical approach to climate action, accounting for different institutional and social contexts across countries, is argued to be required to accelerate action. © The Author(s) 2023.

  • Cluster Genesis : Technology-Based Industrial Development
  • 2007
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book examines the origins and emergence of technology-based industrial clusters - regional concentrations of related firms and organizations - in order to understand the forces that promoted economic development. Many places attempt to emulate the world’s most famous industrial cluster Silicon Valley, with its rich institutional landscape of engaged and leveraged research universities, high-flying local venture capitalists, world class supporting business and legal consultants, and rich collaborative networks. While mature clusters may look similar, what really matters is the process by which clusters come into existence. But there is little understanding of such processes, and little guidance provided on the role of policies in promoting cluster emergence. The book attempts to bridge this gap in the literature by focusing on the early origins of high-technology cluster in Europe, the United States, and China, and the ensuing policy implications. The book is organized around three main themes: Creation Myths Revisited, Considering the Development Cluster Context, and Crafting Cluster and Economic Development Policy. The empirical analyses suggest that clusters that grow rapidly as compared to the less successful ones are distinguished by vigorous entrepreneurial activity and the active building of institutions aided by the forces of agglomeration economies.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: The COVID-19 Crisis and Entrepreneurship. - Cham : Springer Nature. ; , s. 61-85, s. 61-85
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the first quarter of 2020, the global economy was rapidly hit by a pandemic which led to state-wide lockdowns and the worst economic crisis since the World War II. Both the supply and the demand sides of economies were severely affected, followed by a dramatic dip in global GDP. As a response, policymakers introduced an unprecedented number of interventions to back up employees, firms, and industries to counteract the collapsing markets. Our main objective is to explore how these fundamental policy interventions are likely to influence the future potential and functioning of markets. Historically swings in the pendulum favoring either market-based solutions or more regulated public sectors have coincided with disruptive crises. The overall question is what will happen during post-COVID-19, will governments withdraw their crisis policies and how will a possible retreat be organized? Are we entering an era of permanently increased governmental interventions? More precisely, we identify three specific threats to the market-oriented economy: the extension and development of governmental expenditures, protectionistic measures, and the level of state aid and the degree of competition at markets. We are particularly interested in the effect of the COVID-19 measures, and their possible extension, on Schumpeterian dynamics, both in terms of entry and exits (Schumpeter I) and how the position of large firms will be affected (Schumpeter II).

  • Does Born Global Survival Differ From Other Start-Ups? : Employee- versus Firm-level Resources
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Review of Entrepreneurship. - : Senate Hall Academic Publishing. - 2009-2822. ; 20:2, s. 197-226
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we embark from a resource-based view to explain hazard rates among new firms. Whereas previous research primarily has approximated firms’ resource bases with size and performance variables (e.g., productivity), we differentiate between employee- and firm-level components, analyzing firm survival. We focus on born global firms within both the manufacturing and knowledge-intensive services (KIBS) industries while implementing three broader control groups. Using longitudinal data we implement a Cox proportional hazard model to estimate the hazard ratios of the included employee- and firm-level variables. Both industry- and firm-level differences are identified, even though the results vary with the specification of the estimations and the particular group being examined. The results should be relevant for both managers and policymakers.
