    • In recent years, Scandinavian scholars have shown an increasing interest in German research on confessionalisation in early modern Europe. In this article, I set out the research topic for a Scandinavian audience and suggest how best to use the concept of confessionalisation when working with Scandinavian sources. The concept of confessionalisation focuses on the creation of the three main confessions (Lutheran, Roman Catholic and Reformed) after the Reforma- tion, and the ways in which it impacted on the early modern state-building process. Through the force of confessionalisation, the early modern state was provided with a powerful tool with which to integrate its subjects (Reinhard, Schilling); however, I would argue that the concept of confessionalisation is not limited to state-building, but also includes the analysis of confessional conflicts. The literature on confessionalisation has also accentuated that (i) the process of confessionalisation was a European phenomenon, and therefore should be analysed in a comparative, cross-confessional manner across the entire region, and (ii) confessionalisation contributed to the creation of modern Europe in the early Sattelzeit, Koselleck's 'saddle period'. Lately, the concept of confessional culture has been developed further to capture the differences in practices, symbols, and self-understanding in the three confessions (Kaufmann). Until now the main problem with applying the concept of confessio-nalisation to Swedish source material has capturing the indifference and passive resistance towards religious change among the peasantry. Sweden was a Lutheran state, but that does not mean that parochial life was truly Lutheran, or at least as Lutheran as the theologians would have liked. I would argue that this does not mean that the concept of confessionalisation cannot be applied to Swedish source material, however. The fact that the confessionalisation of life was uncompleted forced the princes and theologians to work harder on new tools to integrate the nation and drive the state-building process.

    • When did the Reformation end? Reformation, confessionalization and the representation of Martin Luther in Swedish 16th-century printIn the past decades, Swedish scholars have used the concept of the Reformation to refer to a long process of religious change in Sweden between 1527 and 1593. The influence from the term ”the long reformation” used in the Anglo-Saxon world is tangible. Instead, this essay argues for a temporally narrower concept of reformation, which clarifies changes and differences in the 16th century and places Sweden in a European context.Representations (in text or images) of Martin Luther in 16th-century books for a Swedish reading audience are analysed with a view to how differences in representation reflect changes in religious life and society over the century. The article argues that the term ”the Reformation” should be reserved for the first half of the century and the struggle to reform what everyone at the time thought of as the universal church. In this period print was an arena where different views about Luther and the religious process of change were created and negotiated. The term ”confessionalization” should be used for the second half of the century, highlighting the aim to stabilize the various confessional churches and to consolidate and reinforce identities and shared values. The article contrasts six years at the beginning of the period (1526–1531) with six years at the end of the period (1592–1597) to bring to light the difference between reformation and confessionalization. During the first period only three books directly represented Martin Luther by explicitly mentioning him. In the same period seven editions of books strongly connected to Luther (e.g. translations or adaptations of his works) could be identified. However, none of these mentioned Luther. This divergence between representation and reception of Luther is a typical feature of the Reformation outside the Holy German Empire. Luther was a controversial figure and there were competing interpretations of his thoughts. The second period shows an almost opposite relationship between reception and representation. Out of six analyzed books which all translated or adopted Luther’s writing, five contain representations of Luther. Instead of hiding Luther, which was the norm in the earlier period, these publications draw attention to Luther. During the period of confessionalization a positive identification with Luther and his legacy became a characteristic of Swedish Lutheranism. The Swedish Reformation was not laggard but followed a European pattern. It ended in mid-century when the period of confessionalization began. Hence, the year 1593, which in traditional interpretations marks the end of the Swedish Reformation, should be understood as part of the confessionalization process.

  • Undersåten som förstod : den svenska reformatoriska samtalsordningen och den tidigmoderna integrationsprocessen
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The subject who understood. The Swedish Reformation discourse and the early modern process of integration The thesis concerns why it in the discourse of the Reformation was so important to repeat statements about the need for Christendom to go back to its true heritage and that the sermon should be understood by everyone, and the statements consequences for the possibility of formulating order, community and separation of social and political units through the creation of subjects. The thesis contributes to the discussion on how the Reformation cooperated with the early modern process of integration (state building, social discipline as well as the idea of the failure of the Reformation to implement its ideas). The study investigates Sweden 1522–1544. Through the five concepts truth, understanding, heart, soul and Christian I analyse the discourse of the Reformation. The reformers claimed that they found and reawakened the Biblical truth and that the truth was apparent to everyone. At the same time, they also claimed the need for correct interpretation of the Bible. This paradox shows that it was unthinkable in discourse of the Reformation that the way humans could be blessed may not be an eternal truth. The one and only truth and the possibility for humans to receive this were the central statements of the discourse of the Reformation, and these statements could be seen as a way of making it impossible to recognize the ambiguity in the conditions for salvation. The theological concepts of the Reformation connected with political/social concepts and I investigate how the discourse of the Reformation influenced the creation of order, community and separation in the household and the realm. The main argument is that, seen as a discourse, the Reformation produced a typical way of talking and combining concepts that itself had an integrating effect on society. Through placing every subject in the discourse, it was only possible for subjects to exist in the discourse and therefore they became related to each other. The way of talking about understanding, the heart and the soul made it possible to recognize someone who did not understood in the right way. The parishioner or subject who did not understood as well as the parishioner or subject who made every possible effort to understand were both products of the discourse, and in this way the Reformation succeeded in establishing knowledge and understanding as focal points from where it was meaningful to judge people and make statements about how they were. At the end, the subject who understood was the main product of the discourse of the Reformation and through this subject it was possible to make statements about the will, the thoughts and the demands of the King´s subjects.
