    • Electric power systems are undergoing a paradigm shift where an increasing number of variable renewable energy resources such as wind and solar power are being introduced to all levels of existing power grids. At the same time consumers are gaining a more active role where self energy production and home automation solutions are no longer uncommon. This challenges traditional power systems which were designed to serve as a centralized top-down solution for providing electricity to consumers. Demand response has risen as a promising solution to cope with some of the challenges that this shift is creating. In this thesis, control and scheduling studies using demand response, and consumer load models adapted to environments similar to Sweden are proposed and evaluated. The studies use model predictive control approaches for the purpose of providing ancillary and financial services to electricity market actors using thermal flexibility from detached houses. The approaches are evaluated on use-cases using data from Sweden for the purpose of reducing power imbalances of a balance responsible player and congestion management for a system operator. Simulations show promising results for reducing power imbalances by up to 30% and managing daily congestion of 5-19 MW using demand response. Moreover, a consumer load model of an office building is proposed using a gray-box modeling approach combining physical understanding of buildings with empirical data. Furthermore, the proposed consumer load model along with a similar model for detached houses are packaged and made freely available as MATLAB applications for other researchers and stakeholders working with demand response. The applications allow the user to generate synthetic electricity load profiles for heterogeneous populations of detached houses and office buildings down to 1-min resolution. The aim of this thesis has been to summarize and discuss the main highlights of the included articles. The interested reader is encouraged to investigate further details in the second part of the thesis as they provide a more comprehensive account of the studies and models proposed.

    • Commercial and operational use of residential and commercial user demand-side flexibility in energy grids will play an important but, as yet, not disclosed role in realising the required increase in the penetration of DG-RES. An increased embedding potential is needed to satisfy ambitious energy efficiency and carbon dioxide emission targets. Introduction of smart technologies is seen as a facilitator but also encounters technological, operational, market and regulatory challenges. From assessing a number of technologies and field test projects, task 17 of the IEA/DSM program has explored the nature of this demand-side flexibility and the stakeholder context. It was found that a portfolio of services and control strategies for coordinating flexibility in an efficient, safe, reliable and scalable manner can be found. The boundary conditions, valuation and practical implementation are also discussed.

  • The plasminogen receptor, Plg-RKT, plays a role in inflammation and fibrinolysis during cutaneous wound healing in mice

    • Wound healing is a complex physiologic process that proceeds in overlapping, sequential steps. Plasminogen promotes fibrinolysis and potentiates the inflammatory response during wound healing. We have tested the hypothesis that the novel plasminogen receptor, Plg-RKT, regulates key steps in wound healing. Standardized burn wounds were induced in mice and time dependence of wound closure was quantified. Healing in Plg-RKT−/− mice was significantly delayed during the proliferation phase. Expression of inflammatory cytokines was dysregulated in Plg-RKT−/− wound tissue. Consistent with dysregulated cytokine expression, a significant delay in wound healing during the proliferation phase was observed in mice in which Plg-RKT was specifically deleted in myeloid cells. Following wound closure, the epidermal thickness was less in Plg-RKT−/− wound tissue. Paradoxically, deletion of Plg-RKT, specifically in keratinocytes, significantly accelerated the rate of healing during the proliferation phase. Mechanistically, only two genes were upregulated in Plg-RKT−/− compared with Plg-RKT+/+ wound tissue, filaggrin, and caspase 14. Both filaggrin and caspase 14 promote epidermal differentiation and decrease proliferation, consistent with more rapid wound closure and decreased epidermal thickness during the remodeling phase. Fibrin clearance was significantly impaired in Plg-RKT−/− wound tissue. Genetic reduction of fibrinogen levels to 50% completely abrogated the effect of Plg-RKT deletion on the healing of burn wounds. Remarkably, the effects of Plg-RKT deletion on cytokine expression were modulated by reducing fibrinogen levels. In summary, Plg-RKT is a new regulator participating in different phases of cutaneous burn wound healing, which coordinately plays a role in the interrelated responses of inflammation, keratinocyte migration, and fibrinolysis.

    • The decay schemes of 36 s 106Tc and 5 s 108Tc have been studied with γ-ray singles and γ-γ coincidence measurements. To separate the technetium nuclides from the fission products of 239Pu, an on-line chemical separation procedure has been developed which is based on multistep chemical separations of liquid phases by fast-rotating centrifuges (“SISAK”). The resulting level schemes of 106Ru and 108Ru, together with those of 102Ru and 104Ru, are interpreted in terms of the generalized collective model of Gneuss and Greiner. The potential-energy surfaces calculated from the spectroscopic data show a trend towards triaxial shapes for the very neutron-rich Ru nuclei.
