  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

  • Automating Loading and Unloading for Autonomous Transport: Identifying Challenges and Requirements with a Systems Approach
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. ; Part III, s. 332-345
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The logistics industry has undergone significant changes due to high demand, competition, cost pressures, interruptions, and labor market limitations affecting supply chains. As a result, there has been a significant adoption of automation in internal logistics such as warehousing, stock control, and material handling, leading to increased organizational competitiveness by reducing manual labor costs and time spent on these operations. The use of autonomous road transport holds potential to improve transport performance within areas of safety, sustainability, and efficiency. However, for autonomous transport to be fully ealized, loading and unloading processes at shipping and receiving facilities must also be automated. This paper takes a systems approach to identify the challenges and requirements for automated loading and unloading in a setting of autonomous truck transport potentially within a production setting. By addressing these challenges and meeting the necessary requirements, it may be possible to fully realize the benefits of autonomous transport and improve overall transport performance.

  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. ; 6267 II, s. 26725-26725
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With Euro50 as a convenient telescope laboratory, the Euro50 team has continued development aiming at a European extremely large telescope (ELT). Here, we give a progress report. The needs of science and instrumentation are briefly discussed as is the importance of photometric stability and precision. Results are reported from work on integrated modelling. Details are given concerning point-spread functions (PSFs) obtained with and without adaptive optics (AO). Our results are rather encouraging concerning AO photometry and compensation of edge sensor noise as well as regarding seeing-limited ELT operation. The current status of our development of large deformable mirrors is shown. Low-cost actuators and deflection sensors have been developed as have hierarchic control algorithms. Fabrication of large thin mirror blanks as well as polishing and handling of thin mirrors has been studied experimentally. Regarding adaptive optics, we discuss differential refraction and the limitations imposed by dispersive optical path differences (OPDs) and dispersive anisoplanatism. We report on progress in laser guide star (LGS) performance and a real-time online experiment in multi-conjugate AO (MCAO). We discuss ELTs, high-resolution spectroscopy and pupil slicing with and without use of AO. Finally, we present some recent studies of ELT enclosure options.

  • A review of the success and failure of tram systems to carry urban freight: the implications for a low emission intermodal solution using electric vehicles on trams
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European Transport / Trasporti Europei. - 1825-3997. ; 54:5, s. 1825-3997
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper considers the potential use of trams and Electric Distribution Vehicles (EDVs) as cargo carriers in intermodal urban freight distribution. Distribution activities are vital for society but are also the cause of environmental and social problems. Transporting goods in urban areas, where most logistics chains start or end, is an activity that increasingly generates severe problems for all stakeholders, for instance, local authorities, the logistic industry, customers and society in general. New transport solutions are necessary in order to decrease traffic congestion, noise and traffic pollution, e.g., emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants in urban areas. A possible solution to these problems is to transform the current freight distribution system within cities, for example by favouring the enhancement of intermodal transport alternatives, i.e. combining road and rail transport. Information has been collected through a literature review and interviews in Amsterdam and from these results a conceptual model is presented, as well as a low emission concept using electric vehicles on trams in Gothenburg. The concept utilizes techniques from the shipping industry, train industry, and the car industry.

  • Myndigheters roll för urban vattenburen logistik
  • 2022

  • An exploratory study of the scope for receivers to influence urban freight consolidation through changes in their procurement practices.
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract Purpose: During the past 5-10 years there has been an increasing interest in urban freight activities due to desire to reduce the environmental impact of freight movements in cities while at the same time maintaining efficiency. One way that has been promoted to achieve this has been the urban consolidation centers. However, some of these initiatives have been argued to be costly and their take up has been limited. The purpose of this research is to contribute to the research on receivers by comparing two organisations that provide procurement services - one in the public sector and one in the private sector. Potential differences exist between public sector and private sector procurement behavior and the research will explore this and consider the possible importance of intermediary organisations that can provide a link between the receivers and the carriers.Research Approach: The paper adopts an exploratory research approach based on a review of relevant literature about transport purchasing and the purchasing behavior of managers in the public and private sectors. This review is then supported by several in-depth interviews. Following the interviews two case studies have been prepared one concerned with public sector procurement and the other with the private sector. These case studies are summarised in the paper and similarities and differences are considered.Findings and Originality: Most urban freight research has focused on carriers. However, receivers possess considerable supply chain power and their decisions can strongly influence urban goods deliveries. This research identifies some important features of the role played by organisations which are neither receivers nor carriers but instead play an intermediary role within the urban supply chain.Research Impact: In particular, the focus of this paper is on the procurement patterns of public and private organizations and potential difference between them. Potential impact of this work would be the contribution to the knowledge about the receivers’ side and their purchasing behavior in relation to the freight generation aspect of urban freight. This study can contribute to the knowledge about consolidation of the goods delivered to the receivers and how the receivers or those organisations working with receivers can trigger it by their procurement practices.Practical Impact: Practical impact can be the knowledge on the influence of goods consolidation activities via changes in organization procurement practices.

  • Business Improvement Districts as important influencers for changing to sustainable urban freight
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Cities. - : Elsevier. - 0264-2751 .- 1873-6084. ; 97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores the ways in which Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) can promote initiatives that lead to more sustainable urban goods movements in urban areas. The qualitative research was conducted by studying eight BIDs in three cities and in three countries - all the BIDs studied had considered or taken actions related to urban freight and sustainability. The results show that BIDs in different countries have similarities and differences in their organisational structure and functions, the main services provided and readiness to promote initiatives related to urban freight improvements. We identified that differences in their accomplishments relate to their motivation, awareness of the scope to influence urban freight and the extent of their collaboration with local and city authorities concerning urban freight initiatives. In general, we suggest that BIDs have the potential to act as important influencers in urban freight as they (i) unite the receivers and encourage them to address joint operations that bring economic and environmental benefits (ii) give the receivers the possibility to implement changes through the power of collective action (iii) facilitate the dialogue and collaboration with local and city authorities. As a result, we suggest that the measures directed to BIDs on improving urban freight can have much more significant return on time and funds invested than if invested in a single businesses and organisations. Our recommendation to BIDs that would like to reach higher level of accomplishments is to ensure stakeholder engagement including engaging and collaboration with local authorities and to demonstrate their willingness to take a lead.

  • EVALUATION OF THE USE OF PUBLIC SPACE IN CITIES: A PILOT-STUDY OF COMPETING USES INCLUDING URBAN LOGISTICS
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 23rd Logistics Research Network (LRN) conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: During the last decade, the establishment of distribution systems in cities has attracted an increased interest in the society as well as in academia. City-logistic implies distribution of goods critical to the everyday life in a flexible urban environment with regard to public- and industrial stakeholder interests. Based on different stakeholder interests, there is a standing need to evaluate the use of public space (PS) an urban environment. Yet, there is still an uncertainty about stakeholder interests as well as stakeholders rights to influence the use of PS in the urban environment. The purpose of this paper is to present a conceptual framework to evaluate the use of PS with regard to stakeholder interests.Research Approach: A literature review of published research on city-logistics was conducted to create a framework for evaluation interests in PS. The conceptual framework includes the use of PS in urban environment. Based on the presented conceptual framework, stakeholder interests and rights to influence the usage of PS in an urban environment have been evaluated based on empirical data from a single in-depth case study of a Swedish city. Empirical data from participant observations and a survey questionnaire were used as empirical evidence in the evaluation.Findings and Originality: The findings illustrate evaluation of stakeholder interests and rights to influence the use of PS in an urban environment. Main findings include enhanced understanding of different stakeholder interests. The paper contributes to the understanding of an issue is been important in implementing city-logistics, but still not much addressed in published logistics literature: the use of PS. The combination of published research on city-logistics, and analysis of different stakeholder's interests and rights to influence the use of PS provides interesting insight from which further research can be developed to enrich theory and management of city-logistics.Research Impact: The paper contributes to existing research on city-logistics. In particular, it presents a conceptual framework to evaluate stakeholder interests’ and rights to influence the use of PS for implementation of city-logistics.Practical Impact: Managers are recommended to sue the framework to evaluate stakeholder rights to influence to use of use of PS for city-logistic purposes.

  • The role of intermediary organizations in influencing urban deliveries to receivers/establishments
  • 2017
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Most urban freight research has focused on the need to change the behaviour of transport operators (carriers) either through incentives or more commonly through regulation. In the past few years researchers have started to address the scope to involve receivers (mainly retailers) in the reduction of urban freight trips. Typical initiatives include joint procurement or the possible use of consolidation centres. However, this focus on carriers and receivers potentially ignores the role of intermediary organisations that can strongly influence the patterns of urban freight movements and the way in which deliveries are made in urban centres. These intermediary organizations cover a wide variety of types including: Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), public sector purchasing coordinators that establish framework contracts and in the private sector - facilities managers. The paper explores the activities of 10 intermediary organisations in Sweden, UK and USA. An exploratory case study approach has been adopted and the activities of the organisations are summarised in order to enable acomparative assessment to be made. Findings support the contention that intermediary organisations have a powerful role to play in influencing urban freight demand and that their ability to bring together individual receivers is a significant opportunity for achieving more rapid and profound changes in urban freight flows and vehicle movements. The scope for changing procurement in both the public and private sector is also highlighted as one outcome of the research.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences. - : Elsevier BV. - 1877-0428. ; 125, s. 334-344
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Light goods vehicles (vans) are an important and growing part of road traffic in the UK and France, especially in urban areas. Given the continued growth in van traffic it seems timely to consider the reasons for this growth and the scope for carbon dioxide (CO2) reductions. By comparing growth patterns and CO2 reduction opportunities in two countries it is possible to identify some of the most important directions for policy. In each country analysis is presented of the van fleet, its annual average distance travelled, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Approximately 80 per cent of European and American citizens live in an urban environment. Due to their large populations and extensive commercial establishments, urban areas require large quantities of goods and services for commercial and domestic use. This results in increasing levels of demand for freight transport services. Freight transport in towns and cities is a major contributor to environmental impacts, particularly to local air pollution and noise. Urban Logistics addresses public policy makers, freight transport companies and receivers of supplies, providing them with the information and guidance to affect change in the logistics of the city. Urban Logistics is written by an outstanding team of international editors combining their expertise and using their research from leading business schools in Sweden and the US. There are also valuable contributions from academics and industry experts from companies and universities from all over the world. The book includes clear examples of initiatives that work and business case developments, as well as toolkits for policymakers and managers who are devising new initiatives. There is an in-depth examination of different aspects of urban logistics, such as retail logistics for cities, urban food supply chains, services and the special logistics requirements involved, construction, waste management and e-commerce and home delivery. There is also a focus on networks and partnerships and an analysis of innovation as a new constant. Online supporting resources include PowerPoint lecture slides.

  • Ingår i: International Journal of Urban Sciences. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1226-5934 .- 2161-6779. ; 18:2, s. 244-261
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper addresses road freight transport operations during the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. It presents work carried out prior to the Games to understand pre-Games patterns of freight deliveries in London (for both light and heavy goods vehicles) and the results of modelling work carried out to assess the likely impacts of the Games road restrictions on freight operations. The modelling results indicated that increases in total hours travelled carrying out collection and delivery work would range from 1.4% to 11.4% in the six sectors considered. The results suggested increases in hours travelled in excess of 3.5% in four of the six sectors modelled. The possible actions that could be taken by organizations to reduce these negative impacts were also modelled and the results indicated that such actions would help to mitigate the impact of the road restrictions imposed on operators during the Games. The actual impacts of the 2012 Games on transport both in general terms and specifically in terms of freight transport are also discussed, together with the success of the actions taken by Transport for London (TfL) to help the road freight industry. The potential freight transport legacy of the London 2012 Games in terms of achieving more sustainable urban freight transport is considered and the steps being taken by TfL to help ensure that such a legacy can be realized are discussed. Such steps include policy-makers continuing to collaborate closely with the freight industry through the ‘London Freight Forum’, and TfL's efforts to encourage and support companies revising their delivery and collection times to the off-peak; improving freight planning in the design and management of TfL-funded road schemes; electronic provision of traffic information by TfL to the freight industry, and the further development of freight journey planning tools.

  • MIND THE GAP: THE INTERFACE BETWEEN AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES AND THE LOGISTICS SYSTEM
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Purpose Using autonomous vehicles in goods transport has potential benefits. However, the transition to a future autonomous (and electric) freight system needs to take account of the interface between the vehicle and other parts of the logistics system in order to exploit potential benefits and overcome challenges related to the absence of a driver. The purpose of the research is to identify the prerequisites for achieving automated loading, unloading, related information handling and in-plant transport at these interfaces. Research Approach Cases studies consider senders and receivers of various products as well as organisations that have a role including real estate companies that develop warehouses and terminals. The case studies consider vehicle and handling equipment technology alongside the processes that may need to change if the efficiency gains of an autonomous vehicle are to be realised. Research questions are addressed at the logistics system level. The cases studies combine questions about logistics process and technology alongside those concerned with underlying business models. Findings and Originality Results presented are at the half way stage of a two-year project and will be based on the initial series of interviews for four case studies. Findings so far include: (1) lack of development in this topic compared with interest in autonomous and automated transport (2) importance of organisational ssues in the logistics chain e.g. contractual relationships (3) importance of taking a broad view of the companies that need to be involved (4) product type and characteristics are important but other factors may have more influence on the scope to develop initiatives in this area. Research Impact The research provides insights into the complexity of the interfaces in autonomous and automated transport and logistics systems. The empirical findings enrich the discussion of this field. Combining insights from logistics, technology, materials handling and business has demonstrated the benefits of an interdisciplinary approach. Practical Impact Autonomous transport systems may bring many commercial benefits. However, the scale of these benefits will be significantly diminished if questions about the interface points in the logistics system are not addressed. The outputs of the research will provide important insights for managers addressing these challenges.

    • MATLAB and its companion product Simulink are commonly used tools insystems modelling and other scientific disciplines. A cross-disciplinaryintegrated MATLAB model is used to study the overall performance of theproposed 50m optical and infrared telescope, Euro50. However thecomputational requirements of this kind of end-to-end simulation of thetelescope's behaviour, exceeds the capability of an individualcontemporary Personal Computer. By parallelizing the model, primarily ona functional basis, it can be implemented across a Beowulf cluster ofgeneric PCs. This requires MATLAB to distribute in some way data andcalculations to the cluster nodes and combine completed results. Therehave been a number of attempts to produce toolkits to allow MATLAB to beused in a parallel fashion. They have used a variety of techniques. Herewe present findings from using some of these toolkits and proposedadvances.

  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Cities and metropolitan areas serve a wide variety of functions. Those cities which have a port function may be subject to significant increases in traffic flows. Thus in recent years port activities have at times been viewed as a problem by those responsible for traffic planning in the city with which the port is connected. This paper considers the port-city interactions over time and highlights how these have changed. A new phase of these interactions may be at hand with significant implications for urban freight movements. Ports’ strategies are constantly evolving and port managers seek to make better use of the port’s assets. One of the main assets is land and here there are some emerging trends that have important implications for the port-city interface. In addition, city authorities are increasingly looking for opportunities to use non-road modes for some of the movements of goods to, from and possibly within their cities. Cities that are connected to a port have some interesting opportunities in this area. These developments imply a new period of more intense port-city interaction.

    • This chapter considers stakeholder engagement and partnerships for improved urban logistics. It builds on on-going research from the University of Gothenburg that has addressed questions of the various approaches to engaging stakeholders and the important question of what works and what does not work. The chapter discusses stakeholder engagement techniques, the role and development of freight partnerships and stakeholder engagement through business improvement districts. Other engagement initiatives that can be considered are also reviewed.

  • The sustainability of last-mile freight in cities
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Handbook of Sustainable Transport, Edited by Carey Curtis. - : Edward Elgar. - 9781789900460 ; , s. 170-179
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The sustainability of last mile freight has emerged as a key global issue in reducing energy consumption, cutting atmospheric pollution, reducing the resource demands of common consumer products, and in facilitating the transition towards more sustainable accessibility within cities. These issues are in addition to mitigating the direct problems of managing the social, economic, and local environmental impacts of the last mile. However, achieving broad improvements in the sustainably of last mile freight can be quite difficult, and typically requires an ongoing policy commitment to understanding and influencing the complexity of goods movements within cities.

  • Transportation as a loosely coupled system: a fundamental challenge for sustainable freight transportation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sustainable Transportation. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1556-8318 .- 1556-8334. ; 17:7, s. 804-814
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In view of the pressing need to reduce the negative environmental impact of freight transportation we argue that it is essential to take account of the organization of the freight transportation system when considering how to address various individual activities and parts of the system. To support a transition to a more sustainable freight transportation system this paper examines the way in which different parts of the system interact and the way this can impact the scope for profound change. Taking loosely coupled systems (Weick, 1976) as a starting point, we scrutinize the couplings within and between three system layers of the freight transportation system: the supply chain layer, the transportation layer, and the infrastructure layer. In addition, we address two interfaces connecting these layers: the market for transportation services, and the traffic using the infrastructure. We find that tight couplings dominate in the supply chain and infrastructure layers and that these couplings depend on loose couplings in the transportation layer and the two interfaces. The pattern of couplings identified in the freight transportation system can explain several positive outcomes, such as flexibility and efficiency. But there are also major negative aspects of the loosely coupled nature of the system that create resistance to change and present a barrier in the drive for increased sustainability. The paper concludes that the identified couplings and system features have important implications for policies aiming to change the freight transportation system in ways that lead to significant reduction in the reliance on oil.

  • Urban Logistics and Freight Transport
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Encyclopedia of Transportation. - : Elsevier. - 9780081026724 ; , s. 178-183
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Urban logistics and freight transport are essential activities for cities and involve complicated interactions between the public and private sectors. Cities are growing and urban logistics is becoming more important. However, freight transport, storage, deliveries, loading, and unloading also create negative impacts related to energy use, emissions, noise, and safety. As a result, public authorities need to consider a wide range of initiatives to mitigate these impacts and to ensure that urban logistics can function efficiently. This chapter outlines the main features of urban logistics and considers seven categories of initiatives where the public and private sector interact. The categories are illustrated with examples from cities and projects on an international level, drawing on the increasing level of research interest in this field.

  • Urban traffic congestion and freight transport: A comparative assessment of three European cities.
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 3rd Interdisciplinary International Conference on Production, Logistics and Traffic, Darmstadt.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A high proportion of freight and service transport in cities takes place during peak hours on the road network. At the same time, trends in supply chains and logistics management together with changes in the behaviour by business and private consumers are leading to increased fragmentation of last mile deliveries. The combined result of this is that more vehicles are trying to make more deliveries at the same time and the infrastructure available (roadspace and curbside space) cannot cope. The paper explores this trend by means of a review in three contrasting cities: Stockholm, Brussels and London. The research is a qualitative assessment of trends and developments focused on freight transport and congestion. The three cities suffer from problems of congestion and all have a growing number of smaller vehicles being used in urban supply chains. This has consequences for congestion patterns. All three cities also face greater increases in freight transport activity compared with personal car travel. The scope to retime deliveries to the off peak hours (OHD) is important and some progress has been made although it is limited. The comparisons provide some insights and give ideas for further changes.
