Internship as a Mean for Integration. A Critical Study

- Creating internships for newly arrived refugees and immigrants is a well-established part of the Swedish national integration program and is seen as a strategy to speed up immigrants’ establishment process. One common belief is that the workplace is expected to give the newly arrived trainee necessary language training, as well as contextual and cultural knowledge. Here, the transferring direction of knowledge is from the Swedish workplace to the receiving newly arrived trainee. However, it is rarely discussed whether the trainee will bring valuable knowledge to the organization, or what the relational aspects of the internship should look like. In this paper, we develop the analysis of internships as a mean for integration in Sweden, by analyzing what trainees and their supervisors experience in terms of knowledge transfer and development. By interviewing trainees (4) and supervisors (5), the aim of this paper is to discuss ideas and practices in an internship program for refugees that The University of Gothenburg started in 2015. The interviews focus on the structural and organizational level, though individual experiences also play a central role. Theoretically, the analysis is interdisciplinary and a cross-cut between organizational theory and cultural studies, especially the work of Sara Ahmed. Our results show that the trainee is seen both as a resource and as someone who represents multiculturalism, hospitality, and the altruism of the university and its employees. The trainee is expected not only to integrate in a productive way, but also to stand out in non-productive areas, such as the social context.

- The article will examine the literary reception of Søren Kierkegaard’s Either/Or in Sweden during the nineteenth and twentieth century. Since there already are several reliable studies concerning the general influence of Kierkegaard in Sweden, the article wants to draw attention to some important historical patterns and contexts that have been overlooked. The article begins with an essay written as early as 1851 by A. T. Lysander. This unique and early reception of Either/Or dates from Kierkegaard’s time, and he very likely read and approved of the characterisation. The article will thereafter trace the important reception of Either/Or in the great moral debate of the 1880s. The complete history of the translations Either/Or to Swedish will also be treated. Finally this article will examine Lars Gyllensten’s writings and ideas, which present Either/Or to a Swedish audience.

- Artikeln undersöker föreställningar om imitation och originalitet hos ett antal sk. ”beta-läsare", vilka erbjuder sig att hjälpa andra fanfictionskribenter att förbättra sina berättelser om den japanska mangan Sailor Moon. Syftet med artikeln är att undersöka hur gränsdragningen mellan original och kopia ser ut i intervjumaterialet. Hypotesen är att de föreställningar om utveckling som kan avläsas via nätgemenskaperna i fankulturen och på fanfiction-sajter har stora likheter med de föreställningar om utveckling och kunskap som man kan finna i den japanska seriekulturen. Då skapandet av fanfiction på internet förmodligen har andra funktioner än att skapa ett unikt och individuellt uttryck söker man inte originalitet och individualitet i den romantiska meningen. Man förhåller sig inom fanfictionskrivande närmare de västerländska förromantiska – eller asiatiska – lärstrukturerna med viktiga inslag av ”imitatio” och lärlingskap. Vi menar att en djupare förståelse för den specifika kompetens som utvecklats av ”imitatio" i fandoms och fanfictionskrifter också kan ge nya perspektiv på lärande i formella miljöer – perspektiv som är nödvändiga att anlägga för att kunna möta och värdera internetkulturernas samtida uttryck som tydligt visar upp andra sätt att uppfatta kunskap och identitet.

- Camino stories, or what is also called the ‘Jacobean literature’, continue to inspire walkers to do the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. These stories become part of, and even directs, the understanding of the pilgrimage process, but they also narrate the trail and the trails environment creating a ‘storyworld’ where the trail is as important as the events of the story. The article analyses how Swedish Camino stories, medieval and modern, narrates the trail and how the Jacobean literature is contributing to the immaterial heritage of the Camino by using an intertextual, historical method deploying the concept of the palimpsest. The perspective is also extended by co-reading the textual layers with the trail and its materiality itself, using Material ecocriticism and Eco-narratology as a theoretical frame.

- Artikeln analyserar Hayao Miyazakis berättelse om ett postapokalyptiskt tillstånd gestaltat i animefilmen Nausikaä från Vindarnas dal (Studio Ghibli) med hjälp av en ekokritisk läsning. I centrum av analysen ligger karaktärernas förhållande till giftskogen och som kommer fram till att två olika förståelseparadigm behärskar berättelsen. Å ena sidan det imperialistiska perspektiv som representeras av Torumenkien och Kushana, å andra sidan det förståelsens paradigm som Nausikaä står för och som kan anslutas till en kosmopolititisk och andlig vision. Läsaren vinner vi en insikt om naturens läkande kraft och om ett annat sätt att agera även mellan olika kulturer.

Skuggspel. Mellan bildkritik och ikonestetik i Lars Gyllenstens författarskap : A play of shadows. Image Critique and Icon Aesthetics in the works of Lars Gyllensten

- This dissertation addresses, on the one hand, Lars Gyllenstens fundamentally critical relationship to imagery and image interpretation. Throughout his literary career, in his fiction as well as in his polemic criticism in the press, Gyllensten has performed the role of iconoclast. On the other hand, his writing has continually involved the investigation and creation of images, often with the help of the visual arts. What is the relationship between Gyllensten the iconoclast and Gyllensten the creator of images - between image criticism and aesthetics? Contrary to earlier research, this thesis maintains that Gyllensten did not abandon his critique of imagery in the mid 1960's but rather continued beyond that period to act as image critic as well as image defender. The conclusion becomes apparent if the author's entire oeuvre - fiction, essays and critical articles - is considered. The dissertation is ordered into three sections: Part One demonstrates how certain central metaphors can be understood to function as critical tools, rhetorical devices and meta-images, i.e. images reflecting the process of image-creation or representing the act of representation. From Gyllenstens early work, the text, the staged event and the metaphorical function of Camera obscura are analyzed. Thereafter, the central metaphors 'Flesh' and 'Dance' in Carnivora (1953) are examined. The texts involved in this collection of fragments are seen as unified language games which, via metatextual strategies, offer interpretative instructions on various levels to the reader. The manner in which the text engages the visual arts is also explored in relation to Carnivora and to critical essays from early on in Gyllensten's writings. Part Two investigates the author's polemic cultural criticism in articles written for the press. Here it is shown that, even in this context, Gyllensten uses metaphorical language games. Particular emphasis is placed on his uses of the key iconoclastic concepts iconoclasy (ikonoklasi), idol and idolatry. In so doing, the contemporary critical context relating to the positively-charged concept of icon is exposed. Part Three proposes to show how In the shadow of Don Juan (I skuggan av Don Juan, 1975) involves a meta-critique, i.e. a criticism directed at fruitless iconoclasm, which upheld the author's image criticism while displaying an attitude of image creation. The function of the concept of icon as another meta-image in the following novel, Return of the shadow (Skuggans återkomst, 1985), is then examined. Through the analysis of that novel's excessive use of meta-textual strategies, the aesthetics is shown to guide the reader's reception in the same way as was done in Carnivora. To that end, the investigation involves the analysis of a number of ekphrases whose function in the novel is to guide interpretation as well as to free it from mono-dimensionality. The novel's narrative structures are then compared to the orthodox church and its holy icons. Thus it is shown how the author allows conditions from the metaphor's (the icon's) original context to structure the way in which Return of the shadow can be opened for a myriad of interpretative paths. The result is a demonstration of a multi-dimensional aesthetic offering the possibility of creative involvement in producing the work of art.

The Child in the Forest. Performing the Child in 20th Century Swedish Picture Books

- This article investigates how the child is performed in the forest, or in relation to the forest, in Swedish picture books of the 20th century. Using an ecocritical approach, we lay bare themes, motifs and tendencies that indicate a changing relationship with the forest during the course of the century. While the child is dependent on the forest – but also very knowledgeable about it – at the beginning of the twentieth century, she is increasingly depicted as being cut off from her former natural environment as the century proceeds. Gradually, the idea of the child as a guest in the forest replaces the idea of man and nature being part of a whole, a theme that clearly reflects growing levels of alienation during the twentieth century. Of particular interest is that this alienation and »guest theme« first arises in environmentalist and didactic picture books from the 1950s onward, and especially during the 1970s. During this period, the child was supposed to be educated to take care of the forest and is thus required to conceive of herself as a guest paying the natural environment a brief visit. The feeling of being part of a whole, that is, of nature, starts to disappear. Some picture books from the late twentieth century try to question man’s alienation from the forest and offer an alternative to man’s domination of nature.

- This article studies how walking on the pilgrim’s way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain creates meaning in the narrative of two novels by the Swedish author Anders Paulrud: Inbjudan till sorg (2000) [Invitation to Grief ] and Kärleken till Sofia Karlsson (2005) [The Love of Sofia Karlsson]. The aim is to highlight the complexity of meaning production and creativity vis-à- vis materiality that results from the use of the metaphorical images of walking and being lost. The interpretation draws on perspectives from material ecocriticism, cultural ecology and cognitive psychology and is carried out through metaphor analyses and close reading of the walking-narratives. The history of walking in literature contextualizes and deepens the interpretation and brings to the fore several examples of historical narratives that also use walking as a motif and narrative structure. It is shown how the novels create an intertextual dialogue with Jean-Jacque Rousseau, Dante Alighieri and the Christian allegorical tradition. Paulrud’s novels are viewed as using the complex and deeply metaphorical image of walking to process all-embracing subjects such as abandonment, love, and a sense of being lost in a postmodern, late-capitalist era, as well as creativity and a sense of being a subject deeply enmeshed in materiality.

- Under de senaste åren har fältet ekokritik vuxit mycket snabbt och inte minst har många kunskapsteoretiska positioner kommit att omprövas inom det. Utifrån olika perspektiv både omhuldar och kritiserar ekokritiken den traditionella vetenskapliga modellen. Detta har lett till en metodologisk mångfald som i vissa fall söker sig mot mer naturvetenskapligt betonade metoder, än vad de flesta humanistiska discipliner i regel gör, och i andra fall utforskar metoder som tänjer på gränserna för vad som inom den akademiska världen överhuvudtaget betraktas som vetenskap. Ekokritiska metoder introducerar denna metodologiska flora, som inte bara är av intresse för ekokritiker utan för alla som vill fördjupa sig i metodfrågor, skaffa sig underlag för diskussion eller finna inspiration till egen forskning. Ekokritiska metoder är den första samlade svenska ingången till ekokritiken som läsmetod, och den har skrivits av forskare från olika svenska forskningsmiljöer - och innehåller dessutom en nyöversatt bidrag från forskningsfronten. Ekokritiska metoder lämpar sig väl som grundbok på kurser i ekokritik eller kurser där metodologi står i fokus.
