  • The Circle of Trust : Management in Acquiring and Acquired Family Businesses
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The issue of mergers and acquisitions is of growing concern in many industries dominated by family ownership. Nevertheless there are few empirical studies of mergers and acquisitions involving family firms. While the few studies performed deal with how family owned companies respond to takeovers, this study will focus on family businesses as the acquiring firm. The empirical findings demonstrate that the family ownership logic of a family firm has concrete consequences for the acquisition process. Compared to traditional literature on mergers and acquisition, which has a focus on control by exchanging management in the acquired organization, the acquirers in this study worked in an alternative way when acquiring family owned businesses. The basis for their approach was trust in the acquired managers´ ability to manage the company for the long run.Sharma (2004) made a call for further efforts to explore the linkages between family business studies and other disciplines in order to propel the family business field toward establishing a niche and identity within the research community. The aim of this study is to enhance knowledge on mergers and acquisitions in family firms, at the same time as we are using the M&A literature to reflect on the specifics of the family firm. The purpose of this study is to explore management of acquired family businesses, with special attention to family ownership logic. Suggestions for further research both regarding mergers and acquisitions within the family business field and the theoretical construct family ownership logic will be discussed.

  • Emotion in strategic management : A review and future research agenda
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Long range planning. - : Elsevier. - 0024-6301 .- 1873-1872. ; 55:4
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Emotion in strategic management has attracted increasing scholarly interest during the past twenty-five years. Researchers have demonstrated the nature and significance of emotion in strategic management from a broad range of perspectives across different levels of analysis. Given the expanding research on the topic, the time is ripe to synthesize this diverse and multifaceted body of knowledge. In a thematic synthesis of the literature, we address the following questions: how does emotion influence strategic management, and how can the field be further developed? We review emotion constructs used in the extant literature and identify three themes related to how emotions influence strategic management: the nonconscious influence of emotions, emotion regulation, and collective emotions. Based on these themes and our analysis, we propose three areas of future research to inspire the field to develop further: (1) scope conditions of emotion research in strategic management; (2) capturing emotion in strategic management; and (3) the ethics, power and politics of emotions in strategic management.

  • Emotional work-family boundaries in the context of family business
  • 2014
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In a family firm, individual family members’ emotions are important for the cohesion and the emotional climate of the family which may in the end affect the family firm performance. Therefore we argue that the role of emotions is important for family business- However, work and family have long been considered to be the main life spheres of individuals and it has been normative to keep work and family apart. As a consequence, these two life domains are often characterized by different emotion rules. The central point of such rules is that “being emotional” i.e. showing emotions is “appropriate” and “natural” in the private sphere whereas it is depicted as “inappropriate” or even “irrational” in the public in our case the business sphere. People are expected to behave emotionally different at home and at work by creating, developing and maintaining emotion boundaries between the firm and the family spheres However, in the context of a family business, work and family are spatially & temporally often impossible to separate. Additionally, the line between family relationships and business relationships is also thin. As a whole, in such in the context of a family business where work and family are de facto interwoven, emotion boundaries may be blurred. This creates challenges for family members such as: How do family members’ emotions interact in the two spheres? How are they managed? Why are emotions managed in specific ways and not others? And what are the implications for individuals, the family and the family business of such emotion management? To addressed these questions we introduce the concept of boundaries and how family members draw emotion boundaries in the context of family businesses in relation to time, space and genuine relationships. Depending on how emotions are managed by the individual family member, this can lead to emotional harmony or disharmony at the individual and/or group level. The purpose of this paper is to explain how family members create, develop and maintain emotion boundaries in the context of their family business where family and work are spatially and temporally intertwined and where genuine relations are at play. Further, we intend to explore consequences for family members, the family and the family business. This paper is based on a narrative from different members of a family business and how do they construct emotional boundaries and why do they do so. This paper concludes with a model about the role or emotional boundaries in the context of family business.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Emotions have a physiological, subjective, and expressive/motivational dimension. They are often triggered when issues of concern such as needs, and goals are threatened or fulfilled. Being neglected for a long time in management science as irrational interference, they are now considered an integral part of family business life. The intersection of family, business, and ownership system create a special complexity of emotions in the family business. Each system has their own emotion framing and display rules. Other factors like family ownership logic, socio-emotional wealth, and norms and values create an emotionally charged context. Breaches of psychological contracts and lack of emotion communication give rise to strong emotions and emotional messiness. Emotions can influence strategic business decisions, foster attachment and positive family and family business functions, or energize conflicts. Emotion work and the social sharing of emotions can lead to a healthy emotion climate.

  • Emotions in Motion : The Strategic Leader in a Radical Change Process
  • 2002
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis offers an emotion perspective to the field of strategic change and leadership. Through a longitudinal study, following two strategic leaders in a real time setting of a radical change process, this study shows that emotions are all-embracing within such a process. The findings stress that strategic leaders are very emotionally committed and tied to the strategy of a company and feel personal responsibility for its progress. Emotions evolve in daily interaction and are produced and reproduced in this context. They arise as a means to understand and relate to the on-going process and as a means to explicitly emphasise and stress the importance of different aspects of the change as well. The results of this study shows that emotions can be related directly to the change process where they serve as driving forces or restraining forces and as indirect driving or restraining forces in relation to the strategic intent. Furthermore, the co-production of emotions between the strategic leader and other organisational members has power implications such as power gain or power drain for the strategic leader, and thereby the strategic leadership. Emotions have also been proven to serve as constructors of emotion sediments, good-mood-setters and bad-mood-setters within the process.Methodologically, this study opens up for further research on emotions. Through a series of micro-processes, the strategic leaders of this study have contributed by helping out with conversations prior to and after meetings and by offering their personal diary notes. Furthermore, a suggested classification of emotions is made in connection to a radical change process.

  • Entrepreneurs' decision making under different levels of uncertainty: the role of emotions
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour & Research. - 1355-2554 .- 1758-6534. ; 19:6, s. 568-591
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate entrepreneurs’ investment decisions under uncertainty in continued investments where the authors test the role of emotions to continue or discontinue the investment.Design/methodology/approach: A conjoint analysis is carried out on 101 entrepreneurs’ 3,232 investment decisions. The entrepreneurs were provided with a scenario of an investment where the dependent variable was the entrepreneur’s propensity to allocate further resources to the described investment. They assessed their willingness to allocate further resources to the investment on a seven point Likert-type scale. The independent variables in the experiment were the experienced emotions of the entrepreneur each of which was described by the two levels of high and low.Findings: It was found that self-confidence, challenge, and hope increase the propensity to continue investments as do increased level of uncertainty. Embarrassment and strain do not increase this propensity, however, high uncertainty decreases the propensity to continue investments. In contrast to the escalation of commitment theory, embarrassment does not make entrepreneurs more prone to invest under uncertainty. Frustration does not yield significant results, which runs contrary to the theory and the hypothesis finds no support.Research limitations/implications: The paper focused on a limited number of emotions, and also on one specific moderating factor that impacts the effect of these emotions on the investment decision.Practical implications: To understand the role of their emotions in investment decisions under different levels of uncertainty may help entrepreneurs to improve the quality of their decision making.Originality/value: This study is an experiment where practitioner entrepreneurs participate which increases the ecological validity of the study. Emotions can explain, partly, why entrepreneurs persist with some underperforming projects, but not others. Uncertainty is a powerful moderating variable in the decision-making process. The results enhance existing knowledge about the emotive side of entrepreneurs’ propensity to make investment decisions under uncertainty. The results also supplementand refine existing theories on self-justification.

  • Ethnic entrepreneurship in a multicultural context : regional development and the unintended lock-in effects
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - 1476-1297 .- 1741-8054. ; 4:4, s. 449-472
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on South Africa, the home country for several ethnic groups. In this article ethnic entrepreneurship refers to people who share a common national background with some shared culture and who perceive themselves, and are perceived by others as separate (Waldinger et al., 1990; Yinger, 1998). The purpose is to illustrate how ethnicity driven laws and directives formed by a government that has "bought into" the Western discourse of entrepreneurship and a traditional view on ethnic entrepreneurship create lock-in effects on the individual as well as on the societal levels. Contrasting these views with ethnic groups as social organizations and the three perspectives of culture as integration, as differentiation, and as fragmentation we fulfill our purpose. The South African context is introduced to the reader and the paper ends with a discussion where lock-in effects of ethnic entrepreneurship are brought up: institutional factors, loss of knowledge; a subcultural exchange, a transfer of the Western discourse of entrepreneurship and the lack of a Barthian change agent representing the fragmentation perspective.

  • Family members' display of emotions : Emotion rules and emotion boundary management in relation to time, space and genuine relations
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Emotions have been pointed out as central for family capital and success of family businesses, but research about how family members manage emotions is lacking. This paper focuses on family members' display of emotions and their emotion boundary management. An analysis of the narratives of five family members illustrate that individuals have diverse views on emotions boundary management. Based on the emotions literature and boundary management, this reveals that time, space and genuine relationships are clues to the individual in how he or she manages emotions between work and family in a situation where both spheres are intertwined. It reveals that family members' creation and maintenance of emotion boundaries are related to their individual emotional harmony and/or dissonance where emotional dissonance may be displayed in order to respect the "family" emotion rule at the sacrifice of one’s own honest emotion. Emotion rules and emotion boundaries are thus developed and enacted differently and individually by each family business member in a three dimensional way – through time, space and genuine relations. This paper finally suggests that family members’ individual emotional harmony and/or dissonance in the long run leads to family emotion harmony and/or disharmony.
