  • A tour to sustainability?: A discussion on the potential for tour operators to promote sustainable tourism
  • 2000
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Aiming to start a constructive debate,“A tour to sustainability?” examines the preparedness of the tour operating sector to undertake the challenges of sustainable tourism. Drivers and barriers for acknowledging operators’ share of impacts and consequently their responsibilities for actions are presented and analysed further. The influential potential of tour operators in tourism industry is defined by their unique central position in the distribution chain, connecting the supply and demand sides of the tourism market. Considering the vast influence large operators have through their economies of scale and integrated activities, the report discusses their capability to induce a positive change for improved performance in the entire tourism industry. “A tour to sustainability?” ends by suggesting some actions to be considered on the side of tour operators, bearing in mind the global efforts made by all industrial sectors for finding the sustainability path.

  • Facilitating Transitions to Sustainable Tourism - The role of the tour operator
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Tourism has become a leading industry in the world and continues to grow rapidly, contributing essentially to economic growth and employment in many countries. Tourism as it looks today poses serious threats to the environment and considerable social and cultural challenges. The problem addressed by this research lies in the weakness of current concepts and practices in pursuit of sustainable tourism to provide lucrative solutions for the impacts created by mass tourism. Taking a systemic approach to problem solving, this thesis aims to bring an in-depth understanding of the complex reality that underlies the dynamic transitions in systems of sustainable tourism. Consequently, the research is focused on the role of key powerful actors, as agents of change, with the overall purpose of clarifying the conditions that trigger and shape their capability to influence a systemic transition. The approach is global in its scope and considers the system as a whole capable to change under the interactions of different elements within the internal and external contexts. Identifying key challenges and opportunities, the research concludes with the suggestion that tour operators may find prosperous directions of development in the field of innovation and sustainable service development.

  • Impacts and responsibilities for sustainable tourism: a tour operator's perspective
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-6526. ; 13:2, s. 89-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tourism is currently responsible for the largest, annual human migration in history. This great movement of people has significant positive and negative consequences on nature, societies, cultures and economies. Desired worldwide for its economic benefits, tourism is anticipated to double during the next 20 years, and the multiple consequences of such rapid growth,,call for a preventative approach at all strategic and professional levels, in order to avoid negative impacts. Considering mass tourism as a reality of our contemporary life that cannot be neglected by current efforts to endorse sustainable tourism, this paper draws attention to one of its key players-the tour operators-advancing the proposition that they play significant roles in affecting changes in behaviors and attitudes towards more responsible forms of tourism. Aiming to facilitate a constructive debate on the matter, the article presents a few of the most important arguments that underscore the potential that tour operators' have in promoting sustainable tourism.

  • Revisiting the lock-in hypothesis on sustainable lifestyles: empirical evidence from consumption of leisure in three Swedish destinations
  • 2010
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sustainable lifestyles and consumption refer to multiple spheres of human activities such as mobility, housing, food and leisure. Increasingly consumers are called upon to assume greater responsibility for changing their lifestyles, primarily through making environmentally sound purchasing choices and changing behavior. To motivate consumers, governments have often focused on improving the provision of “behaviour-changing” information to consumers. However, recent studies demonstrate that the effectiveness of these instruments in terms of actually changing consumer behavior and reducing environmental impacts have not been very promising. This is even more evident in the leisure and tourism sectors where key players in the tourism industry have started to argue that the consumers are not opting for greener alternatives. The “lock-in” hypothesis suggests that it is not necessarily consumers who may not be so willing to change behaviour, but rather contextual circumstances that lock-in preferred choices. Building on an extensive survey of leisure travelers, conducted in 2008-2009 in three Swedish destinations, this paper brings empirical evidence on the extent of the lock-in effect within the context of sustainable leisure lifestyles. The surveys cover tourist choices; their precedents and the awareness of more environmentally sound alternative options in mobility, lodging and leisure activities at the destinations. We correlate this with structural factors in the experience-offer at the destinations.

  • Voluntary Environmental Reporting in Romania
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Environmental Engineering and Management Journal. - 1582-9596. ; 5:3, s. 487-509
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract in UndeterminedToday, thousands of leading companies issue voluntary environmental, CSR or sustainability reports with Europe holding more than 50 per cent of all reports published world-wide. It seems like voluntary reporting is here to stay for the time being. In contrast to the development and implementation of such practices in Western Europe, we do not have much knowledge about the situation of reporting in transition economies of Central and Eastern Europe. Furthermore, besides the cultural differences, little is known about how eastern companies perceive the value of environmental and social reporting. Identifying this gap in the literature this paper aims to bring some clarification on the issue, by performing an exploratory investigation of Romanian companies. As findings indicate, despite the incipient stages of public disclosure of environmental information, Romanian enterprises are ready to catch up with Western practices.

  • The Gender Gap in the Tourism Academy : Statistics and Indicators of Gender Equality
  • 2015
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study is part of an ongoing research project entitled “While Waiting for the Dawn,” which explores the role that gender plays in the lives of women scholars and students in the tourism academy. This report maps gender equality in the tourism academy through a series of key indicators that reflect leadership in the field. These indicators include editorial positions in journals, positions on conference committees, and keynote speakers, among others. Results clearly show a gender gap within the tourism academy and an imbalance in the influence of women and men in key leadership roles, and suggest that tourism scholarship mirrors the patriarchal structures that characterize the global academy. Gender imbalances are not self‐correcting, and proactive policies and initiatives need to be implemented to tackle the gender gap and to avoid the perpetuation of unequal opportunities. We hope this report will help to raise awareness and contribute to creating a more just academy, where women have equal opportunities to shape the present and the future of tourism scholarship.
