  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Open Access (OA) is defined as the free, online, immediate, permanent access to scientific and scholarly material in full-text. Open Access practices have reached the universities and now nearly all university researchers report knowledge of OA. Statistics Sweden (SCB) has estimated that 75% of all money invested in research activities in Sweden is done by private companies. In spite of this, the private sector has been relatively absent from the Open Access discussion and development, in contrast to the universities. The goal of this project was to study the advance of OA practices in the private sector. The method was to visit a number of Swedish companies and present the OA concept. After the presentations web-based surveys were distributed to measure previous knowledge of OA, publishing and readership practices, and views of the matter. Knowledge and awareness of Open Access is less within companies than at universities, although it seems to increase with publishing practices and higher educational degree. The publishing practices, and to lesser extent the reading practices, of scientific articles is less within companies, which could lead to a skewed funding situation for a future Open Access-economy based on an “author-pays” model. In discussions regarding how companies might pay for Open Access we therefore suggest that the flow of information needs to be guarded so that the benefit of access to scientific data does not become limited for companies and industry in a new way, as is already seen by some Open Access journals. The researchers’ access to information should be the same irrespective of whether they work at a company or at the university.

  • Allocation of Research Funds Using Bibliometric Indicators – Asset and Challenge to Swedish Higher Education Sector
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Infotrend. - 1653-0225. ; 64:4, s. 82-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Since 2009, the Swedish government has allocated a part of its direct funding to the Swedish universities based on a bibliometric indicator, which stems from the number of publications and citations found in the Web of Science bibliographic database. This paper discusses the creation and detailed structure of the new indicator, which has met criticism from both researchers and the Swedish Research Council, set to maintain the new system. The current focus on evaluation and quality assurance in the area of higher education, together with the introduction of the new indicator, has created an increased demand on the university administration and libraries for publication databases and bibliometric services

  • Benchmarking Medical Research - Aggregating Publications using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH-terms)
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nordic Workshop on Bibliometrics and Reseach Policy, 2008-09-11-12, Tampere, Finland.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • As the interest in research performance analysis using bibliometrics increases, more specialised tools are developed. In cases when verified publication data is not available; data is normally collected and aggregated using subject or organisational criteria. The journal subject areas in Thomson Reuters/ISI are often used, but can be poor in their precision and granularity. In an attempt to improve the data collection for a number of medical fields, MeSH-areas were created using Boolean combinations of MeSH-terms, the controlled vocabulary keywords of Medline. These areas were then used to benchmark medical research of a number of universities by using a database containing matched Thomson Reuters ISI/Medline data. The presentation will focus on the creation of the MeSH areas and how a reasonable workflow can look. Pros and cons of the general method will also be discussed. The actual benchmark and a study of the nature of the data aggregation are underway and preliminary data will be shown and commented.

  • Evaluating Research Performance using Google Scholar Data– a Study of Coverage and Applicability
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 14th Nordic Workshop on Bibliometrics and Research Policy.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Research performance studies based on citation data have become of interest both nationally and on the university-level as the focus on quality control has increased also in the higher education sector. Large journal-based indexes, such as Web of Science and recently Scopus, have most frequently been used for the task. These have shown to have limited coverage, especially for areas in the humanities and social sciences, where monograph publishing is predominate. In an attempt to study other sources of data, the coverage and applicability of Google Scholar has been discussed. Google Scholar covers a considerable amount of books, Ph.D. theses and reports in addition to journal articles and is a free resource on the web. This paper is research in progress and will present coverage studies of the different indexes for research areas within the University of Gothenburg and address the suitability of Google Scholar as a resource for evaluative bibliometrics.

  • Field Delineation Using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) : An Alternative Way to Aggregate Data in the Web of Science
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 12th International Conference on Scientometrics and Informetrics. - 2175-1935. ; 12:2
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Field delineation is important in bibliometrics. Particularly when measuring scientific performance, the demarcation of the area, to which a science actor belongs, is of the greatest importance. This poster presents a method based on searches on Boolean combinations of medical subject headings (MeSH-terms) in a combined Web of Science (WoS) – Medline database. The construction of the MeSH area definitions is described and recall is discussed and compared to other methods.

  • General User Surveys and Other Methods for Quality Assessment – User Knowledge and Evidence-Based Library Development
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 10th International Evidence Based Library and Information Practice Conference EBLIP, 16-19 June 2019 Glasgow, Scotland, University of Strathclyde.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Aim A key component of library management is meeting the needs of our users. This requires continuous analysis of user experience followed by library development. The aim of this study was to better understand the use and effect of general user surveys (GUS) and other methods of gathering user input for quality assessment and improvement of library activities. Methods Data collection was done via surveys, which were sent out to the library directors of all 308 European LIBER university libraries. The response rate was 42%. After survey collection the free-text answers were coded and categorised and then the results were analysed. Results A majority of the responding libraries (77%) have performed a GUS during the last four years. Of these libraries, 54% reported changes to services based on the surveys. The most common method of obtaining user input was by placing a digital “user suggestion box” on the library website. The next most common method entailed using systematic processes to ensure continuous quality improvements. Discussion/conclusion Nearly half of libraries develop their own survey instruments. Appropriate follow-up after the survey was important in order to assure library development. The key step was producing a written report, which increased success in changes to services by nearly 50%. Changes were observed in all traditional library areas, with most changes reported for the areas of physical library standard, communication/marketing and quality of information literacy education. The changes implemented were typically small steps leading to substantial improvements, rather than larger strategic shifts. Small libraries have limited resources and difficulty arranging large user surveys. They reported higher usage of methods performed in the physical library. The library strengths most valued by users were in the areas of the physical library, researcher support- especially in the area of scholarly communication- and information literacy education. User feedback helps build institutional profile and image. Analysis of the different methods revealed information regarding which methods give the best understanding of the users.

  • Library Assessment and Quality Assurance - Creating a Staff-Driven and User-Focused Development Process
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2014 Library Assessment Conference. Building Effective, Sustainable, Practical Assessment August 4–6, 2014 Seattle, WA. s. 134-138. - 9781594079672
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Library assessment and external intelligence is important for tracking and improving library activities. Quality assurance and strategic planning are intricate parts in sustainably developing better and more effective services. Gothenburg University Library has implemented a process with the goal to join these activities. The process has both bottom-up and top-down features designed to generate strong staff involvement and long-term strategic stability. In 2008, the library started implementing a system where each library team should state a number of improvement activities for the upcoming year. In order to focus the efforts, the system has gradually been improved by closely coupling a number of assessment activities, such as surveys and statistics. The results have generated increased understanding within the different staff groups for changing demands from the surroundings and the need for continuous change to our activities. To further focus the outcome, the process is now also closely guided by the long-term strategic plan of the library.

  • Library Assessment and Quality Assurance - Creating a Staff-Driven and User-Focused Development Process
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Evidence Based Library and Information Practice. - 1715-720X. ; 11:2, s. 28-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective – Gothenburg University Library has implemented a process with the goal to combine quality assurance and strategic planning activities. The process has bottom-up and top-down features designed to generate strong staff-involvement and long-term strategic stability. Methods – In 2008 the library started implementing a system in which each library team should state a number of improvement activities for the upcoming year. In order to focus the efforts, the system has gradually been improved by closely coupling a number of assessment activities, such as surveys and statistics, and connecting the activities to the long-term strategic plan of the library. Results – The activities of the library are now more systematically guided by both library staff and users. The system has resulted in increased understanding within different staff groups of changing external and internal demands, as well as the need for continuous change to library activities. Conclusion – Library assessment and external intelligence are important for tracking and improving library activities. Quality assurance and strategic planning are intricate parts in sustainable development of better and more effective services. The process becomes more effective when staff-driven and built upon systematic knowledge of present activities and users.

  • Making the Repository a Researcher Resource
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: 2nd European Conference on Scientific Publishing in Biomedicine and Medicine, 2008-09-06-08, Oslo, Norway.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Institutional repositories are now available at many academic institutions world-wide. Researchers are urged to contribute full-text documents to increase their visibility and accessibility on the web. Recently, a focus on research evaluation has increased the interest in the bibliographic portion of the data as well and an increasing number of institutions have now made it mandatory for their faculty to register their publications in publication databases. This presentation will focus on the faculty and their situation. How can the growing databases be of value also to the local researchers? How can the databases be turned into researcher resources?

  • Understanding Library Users via Surveys and Other Methods - Best Practices for Evidence-Based Library Development
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Library Administration. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0193-0826 .- 1540-3564. ; 60:8, s. 925-944
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A survey was performed over all university libraries within the Association of European Research Libraries (LIBER) in order to study how different methods of user input are utilized. Libraries using analysis based on explorative methods-such as UX and process mapping-report significantly increased user knowledge and perceived well-function. Over three-fourths of the respondents reported performing general user surveys. Surveys offer ease of collection, effectively gather researcher user group input and generate data suitable for communicating library value to stakeholders. However, it is resource-demanding to transfer findings into service changes, especially for smaller libraries, and results often support stepwise improvements rather than discovery of new services.

  • User Knowledge Management – How University Libraries Analyse User Needs and Develop Services
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 39th annual IATUL conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The demands on library services are quickly changing in a continually updating digital age. This increases the importance of a good understanding of the needs and demands of the users. In order to sample and follow the change in user needs library organisations analyse their efforts using a series of different methods. In a recent survey distributed to all 301 European LIBER university libraries, we asked questions pertaining to methods for quality development, particularly implementation of general user surveys (GUS). Among the 127 answering libraries (42%) we analysed how library services can be developed via a user-centred approach. In general, libraries engaged in explorative methods, such as UX techniques or process mapping, displayed an increased understanding of what the users find as library strengths. On the other hand libraries using primarily reporting tools such as balanced scorecard showed little or no such effect. The library strengths most valued by users in the study were in the areas of the physical library, researcher support - especially in the area of scholarly communication - and information literacy tuition. Several answers indicate that user feedback has helped build institutional profile and image. The results also give an indication of how general user surveys can best be used. Appropriate follow-up after the survey is important in gaining usable results. The key step was the production of a written report, which resulted in a nearly 50% increased chance of obtaining changes in services. Most libraries developed their own surveys for the effort. Services most commonly changed after performing a GUS were in the areas of the physical library, followed by communication/marketing and information literacy tuition. A GUS most often leads to a number of minor service improvements rather than large strategic shifts. This work was commissioned and supported by the former LIBER Working Group on Research and Education.

  • Estimations of effective dose in X-ray examinations derived from information stored in PACS
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Radiological Protection in Transition. - Stockholm : Statens Strålskyddsinstitut. ; , s. 175-178
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Information about each X-ray examination, in a modern digitized X-ray department is generated and stored in a PACS. Appropriate conversion factors, e.g. E/DAP, can be applied to separate projections and summed to the total effective dose for each examination. The objectives of the work were (i) to investigate the accuracy and precision in the calculated effective dose (ii) to identify data for registration of (1) patient dose, (2) exposure data, and (3) patient information (iii) to make it possible to derive dose statistics on patient level for documentation of diagnostic standard doses, optimizations, constancy checks, and future epidemiological studies. The effective doses were calculated using Monte Carlo based computer programs or by using tabulations. Conversion factors were calculated for different levels of information and the individual effective dose was compared to the most precise estimation. The results suggest that the accuracy in the estimations of effective dose increases by added information about the patient (gender, size) and how the examination was performed.

  • External radiation doses to biota : Monte Carlo dose model calculations
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: XVI Conference of the NSFS, Reykjavik Iceland, 22-25 August 2011.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Realistic and reliable dose models are required to estimate the radiological risks to non-human biota, in regions contaminated by radioactivity. To facilitate detailed dose calculations, a graphical user interface has been developed to the Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport code (MCNP): the TADPOLE editor (Terrestrial and Aquatic Dose assessment Program for Organisms in their Local Environment). The editor is intended for site and biota specific analyses of absorbed dose from external γ- and β- radiation. An experiment was performed in controlled, laboratory conditions as a first validation of the calculation models assigned by the editor. Measurements with TL-dosimeters yielded lower doses than was calculated by MCNP5 through the editor.
