  • Arbetsskada : samspelet mellan skadestånd och andra ersättningsordningar
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis addresses the issue of compensation for work-related injuries – the so called occupa-tional damages. Tort law, private insurance law, insurances due to collective bargaining, public insurances covering occupational damages as well as different areas of the social security system are all connected in a vast and complex structure. An important feature of the thesis is to analyse the so called “interdependence” between the different compensation systems. In Part I, the total system – the so called Swedish, or Nordic, model – and its historical development are presented. In Part II of the thesis, it is established what kind of damage situations, which can at all give rise to claims for compensation. Important issues are thereby the requirements of the concept of damage regarding this area of the law (the “work-related injury”). Also the subject matter of causation – “causation-in-fact” and “causation-in-law” – are brought into the analysis. Another factor of crucial importance is the procedural law and its requirements about burden of proof and what is to be counted as proven. If Part II of the thesis has shown the way “into the system”, Part III describes what a person can “get out of the system”. The different forms of compensation are conveyed, with emphasis on income loss.Part IV contains concluding remarks concerning legal aspects on collective agreement regulation of action for damages – the safety insurance – whereby the debate individualism versus collectivism is involved. Moreover, the issue tort law versus insurance law and social welfare law is discussed. The author’s general aim in the thesis is to give stimulus to both critical and constructive discussions concerning the present situation and the development in this field of law.

  • Effect of Surface Nanotopography on Blood-Biomaterial Interactions
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Biologically inspired materials are being developed with the aim of improving the integration of medical implants and minimizing non-desirable host reactions. A promising strategy is the design of topographically patterned surfaces that resemble those found in the extracellular environment. Nanoporous alumina has been recognized as a potential biomaterial and as an important template for the fabrication of nanostructures. In this thesis in vitro studies were done to elucidate the role of alumina nanoporosity on the inflammatory response. Specifically, by comparing alumina membranes with two pore sizes (20 and 200 nm in diameter). Complement and platelet activation were evaluated as well as monocyte/macrophage behaviour. Whole blood was incubated with the alumina membranes and thereafter the biomaterial surfaces were evaluated in terms of protein and platelet adhesion as well as procoagulant properties. The fluid phase was analyzed for complement activation products and platelet activation markers. Besides, human mononuclear cells were cultured on the alumina membranes and cell adhesion, viability, morphology and release of pro-inflammatory cytokines were evaluated. The results indicated that nanoporous alumina with 200 nm pores promotes higher complement activation than alumina with 20 nm pores. In addition, platelet response to nanoporous alumina was found to be highly dependent on the material porosity, as reflected by differences in adhesion, PMP generation and procoagulant characteristics. A clear difference in monocyte/macrophage adhesion and activation was found between the two pore size alumina membranes. Few but highly activated cells adhered to the 200 nm membrane in contrast to many but less activated monocytes/macrophages on the 20 nm surface. The outcome of this work emphasizes that nanotopography plays an important role in the host response to biomaterials. Better understanding of molecular interactions on nano-level will undoubtedly play a significant role in biomaterial implant development and will contribute to design strategies for controlling specific biological events.

  • Atomic Layer Deposition of Copper, Copper(I) Oxide and Copper(I) Nitride on Oxide Substrates
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Thin films play an important role in science and technology today. By combining different materials, properties for specific applications can be optimised. In this thesis growth of copper, copper(I) oxide and copper(I) nitride on two different substrates, amorphous SiO2 and single crystalline α-Al2O3 by the so called Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) techniques has been studied. This technique allows precise control of the growth process at monolayer level on solid substrates. Other characteristic features of ALD are that it produces films with excellent step coverage and good uniformity even as extremely thin films on complicated shaped substrates.Alternative deposition schemes were developed for the materials of interest. It was demonstrated that use of intermediate water pulses affected the deposition pathways considerably. By adding water, the films are thought to grow via formation of an oxide over-layer instead of through a direct reaction between the precursors as in the case without water. For growth of copper(I) nitride from Cu(hfac)2 and ammonia no film growth occurred without adding water to the growth process. The Cu3N films could be transformed into conducting copper films by post annealing. In copper growth from CuCl and H2 the water affected film growth on the alumina substrates considerably more than on the fused silica substrates. The existence of surface -OH and/or -NHx groups was often found to play an important role, according to both theoretical calculations and experimental results.
