  • Impact of wave front and coherence optimization in coherent diffractive imaging
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 21:9, s. 11441-11447
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present single shot nanoscale imaging using a table-top femtosecond soft X-ray laser harmonic source at a wavelength of 32 nm. We show that the phase retrieval process in coherent diffractive imaging critically depends on beam quality. Coherence and image fidelity are measured from single-shot coherent diffraction patterns of isolated nano-patterned slits. Impact of flux, wave front and coherence of the soft X-ray beam on the phase retrieval process and the image quality are discussed. After beam improvements, a final image reconstruction is presented with a spatial resolution of 78 nm (half period) in a single 20 fs laser harmonic shot.

  • High-order Harmonics - A Coherent Source In the Xuv Range
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nonlinear Optical Physics & Materials. - 0218-1991. ; 4:3, s. 647-665
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We review the main results concerning high-order generation processes from the point of view of a potential user of this new source of XUV radiation. The perspectives for optimizing the source, both in efficiency and in spectral range, its characteristics and in particular, its coherence properties, are discussed. Finally, we describe two experiments, which demonstrate the usefulness of the harmonics as a short-pulse, coherent source in the XUV domain.

  • Single-Shot Diffractive Imaging with a Table-Top Femtosecond Soft X-Ray Laser-Harmonics Source
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 103:2, s. 028104-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coherent x-ray diffractive imaging is a powerful method for studies on   nonperiodic structures on the nanoscale. Access to femtosecond dynamics   in major physical, chemical, and biological processes requires   single-shot diffraction data. Up to now, this has been limited to   intense coherent pulses from a free electron laser. Here we show that   laser-driven ultrashort x-ray sources offer a comparatively inexpensive  alternative. We present measurements of single-shot diffraction patterns from isolated nano-objects with a single 20 fs pulse from a   table-top high-harmonic x-ray laser. Images were reconstructed with a   resolution of 119 nm from the single shot and 62 nm from multiple shots.

  • Influence of atomic density in high-order harmonic generation
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Optical Society of America. Journal B: Optical Physics. - 0740-3224. ; 13:1, s. 148-156
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have investigated how high-order harmonics generated in rare gases depend on the atomic density. The peak and the profile of the atomic density in the interaction region were measured as a function of the backing pressure and the distance from the nozzle by a differential interferometry technique, The conversion efficiency for the harmonics in the plateau was found to increase approximately quadratically over the entire range of peak pressures investigated (3-80 mbar). The intensity of the harmonics in the cutoff region, in contrast, increased only until an optimum peak pressure was reached, beyond which it decreased. This optimum peak pressure was found to be dependent on both the laser intensity and the process order. To understand this effect, we have performed extensive propagation calculations of both the fundamental and the harmonic fields, using ionization rates and dipole moments from a tunnel ionization model. We obtained good agreement with the experimental results. The observed effect is attributed to ionization-induced defocusing of the fundamental laser beam, which reduces the peak intensity obtained in the medium and shortens the extent of the plateau. • Polarization of high-order harmonics
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 55:2, s. 1314-1324
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report measurements and calculations of the polarization state of high-order harmonics generated by a 790-nm Ti:sapphire laser. The problem of completely characterizing the polarization state of a partially polarized radiation in the XUV range is discussed in detail. The comparison between several gases, xenon, argon and neon, and different orders, from the 17th to the 33rd, shows that the rotation angle and ellipticity strongly depends on the position of the harmonic in the spectrum, and in particular, whether it is in the cutoff or in the plateau. In the plateau, the rotation angle is quite large, and the ellipticity follows that of the fundamental, remaining, however, smaller. The radiation is only partially polarized. In contrast, in the cutoff, both rotation angle and ellipticity remain small, independently of the laser ellipticity. Our experimental results compare well with theoretical predictions including the single-atom response and propagation effects.

  • Theory of high-order harmonic generation by an elliptically polarized laser field
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 53:3, s. 1725-1745
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We generalize a recently formulated theory of high-order harmonic generation by low-frequency laser fields [Anne L'Huillier et al., Phys. Rev. A 48, R3433 (1993)] to the case of an elliptically polarized light. Our theoretical description includes both the single-atom response and propagation. Phase matching significantly modifies the results obtained in the single-atom response. The results of our calculations, including propagation for both the intensity and polarization properties of harmonics as a function of laser ellipticity, compare very well with recent experimental observations.

  • Surface rheology and foaming properties of sodium oleate and C12(EO)6 aqueous solutions
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Colloid and Interface Science. - 0021-9797 .- 1095-7103. ; 268, s. 221-229
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The dynamic surface tension (DST) and the surface viscoelastic modulus of sodium oleate aqueous solutions at different concentrations were measured using an image analysis tensiometer based on the oscillating bubble technique. The diffusion coefficient of oleate moieties was calculated from DST measurements and the surface viscoelastic modulus using the Langmuir–Szyszkowski and the diffusion-controlled adsorption models. The viscoelastic moduli obtained from model calculations were compared with the corresponding experimental values. The diffusion coefficient of C12(EO)6 in water and the parameters of the Langmuir–Szyszkowski adsorption isotherm were taken from the literature and used to calculate the surface viscoelastic modulus of its aqueous solutions at different concentrations. The foaming properties of both C12(EO)6 and sodium oleate solutions, viz., the foam conductance and the water volume fraction in the foam, were measured using a commercial Foamscan device. Foaming experiments with C12(EO)6 and sodium oleate solutions were carried out either under static conditions; i.e., the foam conductance and the water volume fraction were measured as a function of time after the generation of a fixed volume of foam, or under dynamic conditions; i.e., the foam conductance and the water volume fraction were measured during foam formation. The variations in the foam permeability as a function of surfactant concentration were related to the viscoelastic properties of the air/water interface and to the presence of micelles in the foam films. With foams in which the water volume fraction was higher than 0.05, the foam electrical conduction could be described using a simple parallel resistor model and their conductance measurements were related to the foam water volume fraction. The results related to water drainage under static conditions were used to interpret water drainage under dynamic conditions. Preliminary conjectures on the influence of foam permeability and water volume fraction on the yield of the flotation deinking process were drawn from these results.

  • High-order tunable sum and difference frequency mixing in the xuv region
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-4075 .- 1361-6455. ; 29:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a study of tunable high-order sum and difference frequency mixing in the 7-70 eV range, in xenon, argon and neon. We mix the light from a terawatt, subpicosecond titanium-sapphire laser and that from a tunable optical parametric generator. The radiation generated through mixing processes involves absorption or emission of one or Mo photons from the weak tunable source. The relative strengths of the sum and difference frequency processes depend strongly on the wavelength range of the generated radiation. The sum frequency processes are stronger at low photon energies in xenon, whereas the difference frequency processes dominate at high photon energies, in neon, being almost comparable to harmonic generation.

  • XUV interferometry using high-order harmonics: Application to plasma diagnostics
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Laser and Particle Beams. - 0263-0346. ; 19:1, s. 35-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we present and compare the two different XUV interferometric techniques using high-order harmonics that have been developed so far. The first scheme is based on the interference between two spatially separated phase-locked harmonic sources while the second uses two temporally separated harmonic sources. These techniques have been applied to plasma diagnostics in feasibility experiments where electron densities up to a few 1020 e[minus sign/cm3 have been measured with a temporal resolution of 200 fs. We present the main characteristics of each technique and discuss their respective potentials and limitations.

  • Extreme ultraviolet fourier-transform spectroscopy with high order harmonics
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 95:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate a new scheme for extreme ultraviolet (xuv) Fourier-transform spectroscopy based on the generation of two phase-locked high-harmonic beams. It allows us to measure for the first time interferograms at wavelengths as short as 90 nm, and open the perspective of performing high-resolution Fourier-transform absorption spectroscopy in the xuv. Our measurements also demonstrate that a precise control of the relative phase of harmonic pulses can be obtained with an accuracy on an attosecond time scale, of importance for future xuv pump-xuv probe attosecond spectroscopy.

  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Laser and Particle Beams. - 0263-0346. ; 18:3, s. 495-502
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present two interferometry schemes in the extreme ultraviolet, based on either the wave-front division of a unique harmonic beam (1st scheme) or two spatially separated, phase-locked harmonic sources (2nd scheme). In the first scheme using a Fresnel bimirror interferometer, we measure the degree of spatial coherence of the 13 th harmonic generated in xenon, as a function of different parameters. A high degree of coherence, larger than 0.5, is found for the best conditions in almost the full section of the beam. Then, we demonstrate that the second scheme can be used for interferometry measurements with an ultrahigh time resolution. The 11th harmonic is used to study the spatial variation of the electron density of a laser-produced plasma. Electronic densities higher than 2.10 20 cm -3 are measured.

  • Frequency chirp of harmonic and attosecond pulses
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Modern Optics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0950-0340 .- 1362-3044. ; 52:2-3, s. 379-394
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the phase of the atomic polarization in the process of high-order harmonic generation. Its dependence on the laser intensity and the harmonic order induce a frequency variation in time (chirp) respectively of the harmonic pulses and attosecond pulses. We review the recent experimental results on the temporal characterization of the harmonic emission and show that measurements performed using very different techniques (like XFROG and RABITT), probing the phase in different parameter spaces, can be connected through the mixed phase derivatives, demonstrating the common underlying physics

  • Reconstruction of attosecond pulse trains using an adiabatic phase expansion
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 95:24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose a new method to reconstruct the electric field of attosecond pulse trains. The phase of the high-order harmonic emission electric field is Taylor expanded around the maximum of the laser pulse envelope in the time domain and around the central harmonic in the frequency domain. Experimental measurements allow us to determine the coefficients of this expansion and to characterize the radiation with attosecond accuracy over a femtosecond time scale. The method gives access to pulse-to-pulse variations along the train, including the timing, the chirp, and the attosecond carrier envelope phase.

  • Generation of attosecond pulses in molecular nitrogen
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal D. Atomic, Molecular, Optical and Plasma Physics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6060. ; 40:2, s. 305-311
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have generated attosecond pulse trains in an ensemble of randomly aligned nitrogen molecules. Measurements of the high-order harmonic relative phases and amplitudes allow us to reconstruct the temporal profile of the attosecond pulses. We show that in the considered spectral range, the latter is very similar to the pulse train generated in argon under the same conditions. We discuss the possible influence of the molecular structure in the generation process, and how it can induce subtle differences on the relative phases.
