  • Tracking the ultrafast nonequilibrium energy flow between electronic and lattice degrees of freedom in crystalline nickel
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 101:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Femtosecond laser excitation of solid-state systems creates out-of-equilibrium hot electrons that cool down by transferring their energy to other degrees of freedom and ultimately to lattice vibrations of the solid. By combining ab initio calculations with ultrafast diffuse electron scattering, we gain a detailed understanding of the complex nonequilibrium energy transfer between electrons and phonons in laser-excited Ni metal. Our experimental results show that the wave-vector-resolved population dynamics of phonon modes is distinctly different throughout the Brillouin zone and are in remarkable agreement with our theoretical results. We find that zone-boundary phonon modes become occupied first. As soon as the energy in these modes becomes larger than the average electron energy, a backflow of energy from lattice to electronic degrees of freedom occurs. Subsequent excitation of lower-energy phonon modes drives the thermalization of the whole system on the picosecond time scale. We determine the evolving nonequilibrium phonon occupations, which we find to deviate markedly from thermal occupations.

  • Beyond a phenomenological description of magnetostriction
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magnetostriction, the strain induced by a change in magnetization, is a universal effect in magnetic materials. Owing to the difficulty in unraveling its microscopic origin, it has been largely treated phenomenologically. Here, we show how the source of magnetostriction-the underlying magnetoelastic stress-can be separated in the time domain, opening the door for an atomistic understanding. X-ray and electron diffraction are used to separate the subpicosecond spin and lattice responses of FePt nanoparticles. Following excitation with a 50-fs laser pulse, time-resolved X-ray diffraction demonstrates that magnetic order is lost within the nanoparticles with a time constant of 146 fs. Ultrafast electron diffraction reveals that this demagnetization is followed by an anisotropic, three-dimensional lattice motion. Analysis of the size, speed, and symmetry of the lattice motion, together with ab initio calculations accounting for the stresses due to electrons and phonons, allow us to reveal the magnetoelastic stress generated by demagnetization.

  • Influence of laser-excited electron distributions on the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra : Implications for femtosecond demagnetization in Ni
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Europhysics letters. - : IOP Publishing. - 0295-5075 .- 1286-4854. ; 86:5, s. 57002-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In pump-probe experiments an intensive laser pulse creates non-equilibrium excited-electron distributions in the first few hundred femtoseconds after the pulse. The influence of nonequilibrium electron distributions caused by a pump laser on the apparent X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) signal of Ni is investigated theoretically here for the first time, considering electron distributions immediately after the pulse as well as thermalized ones, that are not in equilibrium with the lattice or spin systems. The XMCD signal is shown not to be simply proportional to the spin momentum in these situations. The computed spectra are compared to recent pump-probe XMCD experiments on Ni. We find that the majority of experimentally observed features considered to be a proof of ultrafast spin momentum transfer to the lattice can alternatively be attributed to non-equilibrium electron distributions. Furthermore, we find the XMCD sum rules for the atomic spin and orbital magnetic moment to remain valid, even for the laser-induced non-equilibrium electron distributions. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2009

  • Landauer theory of ballistic torkances in noncollinear spin valves
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 80:10, s. 104432-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a theory of voltage-induced spin-transfer torques in ballistic noncollinear spin valves. The torkance on one ferromagnetic layer is expressed in terms of scattering coefficients of the whole spin valve, in analogy to the Landauer conductance formula. The theory is applied to Co/Cu/Ni(001)-based systems where long-range oscillations of the Ni torkance as a function of Ni thickness are predicted. The oscillations represent a novel quantum size effect due to the noncollinear magnetic structure. The oscillatory behavior of the torkance contrasts a thickness-independent trend of the conductance.

  • The role of ultrafast magnon generation in the magnetization dynamics of rare-earth metals
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Science Advances. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science. - 2375-2548. ; 6:39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ultrafast demagnetization of rare-earth metals is distinct from that of 3d ferromagnets, as rare-earth magnetism is dominated by localized 4f electrons that cannot be directly excited by an optical laser pulse. Their demagnetization must involve excitation of magnons, driven either through exchange coupling between the 5d6s-itinerant and 4f-localized electrons or by coupling of 4f spins to lattice excitations. Here, we disentangle the ultrafast dynamics of 5d6s and 4f magnetic moments in terbium metal by time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We show that the demagnetization time of the Tb 4f magnetic moments of 400 fs is set by 4f spin-lattice coupling. This is experimentally evidenced by a comparison to ferromagnetic gadolinium and supported by orbital-resolved spin dynamics simulations. Our findings establish coupling of the 4f spins to the lattice via the orbital momentum as an essential mechanism driving magnetization dynamics via ultrafast magnon generation in technically relevant materials with strong magnetic anisotropy.

  • Generation mechanism of terahertz coherent acoustic phonons in Fe
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: PHYSICAL REVIEW B. - 2469-9950. ; 93:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use femtosecond time-resolved hard x-ray scattering to detect coherent acoustic phonons generated during ultrafast laser excitation of ferromagnetic bcc Fe films grown on MgO(001). We observe the coherent longitudinal-acoustic phonons as a function of wave vector through analysis of the temporal oscillations in the x-ray scattering signal. The width of the extracted strain wave front associated with this coherent motion is similar to 100 fs. An effective electronic Gruneisen parameter is extracted within a two-temperature model. However, ab initio calculations show that the phonons are nonthermal on the time scale of the experiment, which calls into question the validity of extracting physical constants by fitting such a two-temperature model.

  • Nonequilibrium sub–10 nm spin-wave soliton formation in FePt nanoparticles
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Science Advances. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 2375-2548. ; 8:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magnetic nanoparticles such as FePt in the L10 phase are the bedrock of our current data storage technology. As the grains become smaller to keep up with technological demands, the superparamagnetic limit calls for materials with higher magnetocrystalline anisotropy. This, in turn, reduces the magnetic exchange length to just a few nanometers, enabling magnetic structures to be induced within the nanoparticles. Here, we describe the existence of spin-wave solitons, dynamic localized bound states of spin-wave excitations, in FePt nanoparticles. We show with time-resolved x-ray diffraction and micromagnetic modeling that spin-wave solitons of sub–10 nm sizes form out of the demagnetized state following femtosecond laser excitation. The measured soliton spin precession frequency of 0.1 THz positions this system as a platform to develop novel miniature devices.
