  • The southern US forest bioenergy encyclopedia : Making scientific knowledge more accessible
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Southern journal of applied forestry. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0148-4419 .- 1938-3754. ; 32:1, s. 28-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Production of forest biomass in sustainably managed forests in the southern United States has great potential to improve forest health, make energy supplies more secure, and increase the social and economic welfare of rural communities. The awareness and access of landowners and forestry and natural resource professionals to new knowledge and market development opportunities must be increased, and new technological advances in knowledge dissemination systems can be very useful in this connection. The Encyclopedia of Southern Bioenergy was developed within The Forest Encyclopedia Network (www. forestencyclopeclia.net/) to facilitate the transfer of useable knowledge from scientific experts in bioenergy and bio-based products to natural resource professionals, landowners, and the general public. Using the encyclopedia as a base, a team of bioenergy and extension education experts has developed several new educational products. These materials are designed as components of an overall biomass training program for the South that is being disseminated through the Southern Regional Extension Forest network.

  • Low temperature microhardness of Xe-intercalated fullerite C60
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Low Temperature Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 1063-777X .- 1090-6517. ; 31:5, s. 454-458
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Vickers microhardness of Xe-intercalated polycrystalline fullerite C60 (XexC60, x~=0.35) is measured in a moderately low temperature range of 77 to 300 K. A high increase in the microhardness of the material (by a factor of 2 to 3) as compared to that of pure C60 single crystals is observed. It is shown that the step-like anomaly in the temperature dependences of the microhardness of pure C60 single crystals recorded under the orientational fcc-sc phase transition (Tc~=260 K) is also qualitatively retained for XexC60, but its onset is shifted by 40 K towards lower temperatures and the step becomes less distinct and more smeared. This behavior of H-barV(T) correlates with x-ray diffraction data, the analysis of which revealed a considerable influence of xenon interstitial atoms on the peculiar features of fullerite thermal expansion due to orientational phase transitions (see the paper by A.I. Prokhvatilov et al. in this issue).

  • Low temperature heat capacity of fullerite C60 doped with nitrogen
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Low Temperature Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 1063-777X .- 1090-6517. ; 32:10, s. 967-969
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The heat capacity C-m of polycrystalline fullerite C-60 doped with nitrogen is measured in the temperature interval 2-13 K. The contributions to the heat capacity from translational lattice vibrations (Debyc contribution), from orientational vibrations of the C-60 molecules (Einstein contribution), and from the motion of the N-2 molecules in the octahedral cavities of the C-60 lattice are estimated. However, no indications of the first-order phase transformation detected earlier in a dilatometric investigation of the N-2-C-60 orientational glass are found (beyond the experimental error limits). A possible explanation for this fact is proposed.

  • Towards a Global Unified Model of Europa’s Tenuous Atmosphere
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Space Science Reviews. - : Springer Netherlands. - 0038-6308 .- 1572-9672. ; 214:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the numerous modeling efforts of the past, our knowledge on the radiation-induced physical and chemical processes in Europa’s tenuous atmosphere and on the exchange of material between the moon’s surface and Jupiter’s magnetosphere remains limited. In lack of an adequate number of in situ observations, the existence of a wide variety of models based on different scenarios and considerations has resulted in a fragmentary understanding of the interactions of the magnetospheric ion population with both the moon’s icy surface and neutral gas envelope. Models show large discrepancy in the source and loss rates of the different constituents as well as in the determination of the spatial distribution of the atmosphere and its variation with time. The existence of several models based on very different approaches highlights the need of a detailed comparison among them with the final goal of developing a unified model of Europa’s tenuous atmosphere. The availability to the science community of such a model could be of particular interest in view of the planning of the future mission observations (e.g., ESA’s JUpiter ICy moons Explorer (JUICE) mission, and NASA’s Europa Clipper mission). We review the existing models of Europa’s tenuous atmosphere and discuss each of their derived characteristics of the neutral environment. We also discuss discrepancies among different models and the assumptions of the plasma environment in the vicinity of Europa. A summary of the existing observations of both the neutral and the plasma environments at Europa is also presented. The characteristics of a global unified model of the tenuous atmosphere are, then, discussed. Finally, we identify needed future experimental work in laboratories and propose some suitable observation strategies for upcoming missions.

  • On the polyamorphism of fullerite-based orientational glasses.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Low Temperature Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 1063-777X .- 1090-6517. ; 31:5, s. 429-444
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The dilatometric investigation in the temperature range of 2–28 K shows that a first-orderpolyamorphous transition occurs in the orientational glasses based on C60 doped with H2, D2 andXe. A polyamorphous transition was also detected in C60 doped with Kr and He. It is observed thatthe hysteresis of thermal expansion caused by the polyamorphous transition (and, hence, the transitiontemperature) is essentially dependent on the type of doping gas. Both positive and negativecontributions to the thermal expansion were observed in the low-temperature phase of the glasses. The relaxation time of the negative contribution occurs to be much longer than that of the positivecontribution. The positive contribution is found to be due to phonon and libron modes, whilst thenegative contribution is attributed to tunneling states of the C60 molecules. The characteristictime of the phase transformation from the low-T phase to the high-T phase has been found for theC60–H2 system at 12 K. A theoretical model is proposed to interpret these observed phenomena. The theoretical model proposed, includes a consideration of the nature of polyamorphism inglasses, as well as the thermodynamics and kinetics of the transition. A model of noninteractingtunneling states is used to explain the negative contribution to the thermal expansion. The experimentaldata obtained is considered within the framework of the theoretical model. From the theoreticalmodel the order of magnitude of the polyamorphous transition temperature has been estimated. It is found that the late stage of the polyamorphous transformation is described well by theKolmogorov law with an exponent of n = 1. At this stage of the transformation, the two-dimensionalphase boundary moves along the normal, and the nucleation is not important.

  • Prognosis for mild traumatic brain injury : Results of the WHO Collaborating Centre Task Force on Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine. - : Medical Journals Sweden AB. - 1650-1977 .- 1651-2081. ; 43, s. 61-
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We searched the literature on the epidemiology, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and costs of mild traumatic brain injury. Of 428 studies related to prognosis after mild traumatic brain injury, 120 (28%) were accepted after critical review. These comprise our best-evidence synthesis on prognosis after mild traumatic brain injury. There was consistent and methodologically sound evidence that children's prognosis after mild traumatic brain injury is good, with quick resolution of symptoms and little evidence of residual cognitive, behavioural or academic deficits. For adults, cognitive deficits and symptoms are common in the acute stage, and the majority of studies report recovery for most within 3-12 months. Where symptoms persist, compensation/litigation is a factor, but there is little consistent evidence for other predictors. The literature on this area is of varying quality and causal inferences are often mistakenly drawn from cross-sectional studies.

  • Specific features of thermal expansion and polyamorphism in CH4 – C60 solutions at low temperatures
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Low Temperature Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 1063-777X .- 1090-6517. ; 33:12, s. 1068-1072
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The temperature dependence of the linear thermal expansion coefficient alpha(T) is investigated in the temperature range of 2.5 to 23 K for two different CH4-C-60 solutions in which CH4 molecules occupy 24 and 50% of the octahedral interstitial sites of the C-60 lattice. In both cases, alpha(T) exhibits hysteresis, suggesting the existence of two types of orientational glass associated with these solutions. The temperature of the first-order phase transition between these two glasses is estimated, and the behavior of these two glasses is compared. The characteristic times of thermalization tau(1), reorientation of the C-60 molecules tau(2), and of the phase transformation between the glasses tau('), are estimated for these solutions. Both the temperature dependence of alpha(T) and the characteristic thermalization time tau(1) are found to have features near the phase transition temperature, and an explanation is put forward to explain these observed features.

  • The effect of the noncentral impurity-matrix interaction upon the thermal expansion and polyamorphism of solid CO-C60 solutions at low temperatures
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Fizika Nizkikh Temperatur. - : AIP Publishing. - 0132-6414. ; 34:6, s. 592-598
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Orientational glasses with CO molecules occupying 26 and 90% of the octahedral interstitial sites in the C60 lattice have been investigated by the dilatometric method in a temperature interval of 2.5–22 K. At temperatures 4–6 K the glasses undergo a first-order phase transition which is evident from the hysteresis of the thermal expansion and the maxima in the temperature dependences of the linear thermal expansion coefficients a(T), and the thermalization times t1(T) of the samples. The effect of the noncentral CO–C60 interaction upon the thermal expansion and the phase transition in these glasses was clarified by comparing the behavior of the properties of the CO–C60 and N2–C60 solutions.

  • Thermal expansion of solutions of deuteromethane in fullerite C60 at low temperature : Isotopic effect
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Low temperature physics (Woodbury, N.Y., Print). - : American Institute of Physics. - 1063-777X .- 1090-6517. ; 35:3, s. 226-231
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The thermal expansion of CD4 solutions in the orientational glass C60 with molar concentration of deuteromethane 20 and 50% has been investigated in the temperature range 2.5–23 K. The orientational glass CD4–C60 undergoes a first-order phase transition in the temperature interval 4.5–55 K. This transition is manifested as hysteresis of the linear thermal expansion coefficient alpha as well as maxima in the temperature dependences alpha(T) and tau1(T), where tau1 is the characteristic thermalization time of the experimental samples. The characteristic re-orientation times of the C60 molecules and the characteristic phase transformations occurring in the experimental solutions are determined. The results of the present study are compared with the results of a similar study of the solution CH4–C60. It is concluded that tunneling rotation of the CH4 and CD4 molecules occupying interstitial positions in the fullerite C60 lattice occurs.

  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 478:7369, s. 337-342

    • Increasing population and consumption are placing unprecedented demands on agriculture and natural resources. Today, approximately a billion people are chronically malnourished while our agricultural systems are concurrently degrading land, water, biodiversity and climate on a global scale. To meet the world's future food security and sustainability needs, food production must grow substantially while, at the same time, agriculture's environmental footprint must shrink dramatically. Here we analyse solutions to this dilemma, showing that tremendous progress could be made by halting agricultural expansion, closing 'yield gaps' on underperforming lands, increasing cropping efficiency, shifting diets and reducing waste. Together, these strategies could double food production while greatly reducing the environmental impacts of agriculture.

  • Intercalation of fullerite C60 with N2 molecules : an investigation by X-ray powder diffraction
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Low temperature physics (Woodbury, N.Y., Print). - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 1063-777X .- 1090-6517. ; 33:10, s. 881-885
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The lattice parameter a of fullerite C60 intercalated with N2 molecules is investigated in the temperature interval 6–295K by x-ray diffraction. It is found that the interstitial molecular N2 has a considerable effect on both the orientational phase transition temperature Tc and the orientational glass formation temperature Tg. Hysteresis of a(T) in the Tc and Tg regions is detected, along with an abrupt change in volume over the region defining Tc. Complete intercalation of C60 with N2 molecules results in a 0.2% increase in the lattice parameter, which persists over the whole temperature range. Evidence is also obtained that the interstitial guest molecular N2 induces a slight deformation of the cubic symmetry of the C60 host lattice.

  • Dietary intake of flavonoids and ventilatory function in european adults: A GA2LEN study
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nutrients. - Basel : MDPI AG. - 2072-6643. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Flavonoids exert anti-inflammatory properties and modulate oxidative stress in vitro, suggesting a protective effect on lung function, but epidemiological studies examining this association are scarce. Methods: A stratified random sample was drawn from the GA2LEN screening survey, in which 55,000 adults aged 15 to 75 answered a questionnaire on respiratory symptoms. Post-bronchodilator spirometry was obtained from 2850 subjects. Forced vital capacity (FVC), the ratio between the forced exhaled volume in 1 second (FEV1) and FVC (FEV1/FVC), FVC below lower limit of normal (FVC < LLN), and FEV1/FVC < LLN were calculated. Intake of the six main subclasses of flavonoids was estimated using the GA2LEN Food Frequency Questionnaire. Adjusted associations between outcomes and each subclass of flavonoids were examined with multivariate regressions. Simes’ procedure was used to test for multiple comparisons. Results: A total of 2599 subjects had valid lung function and dietary data. A lower prevalence of FVC < LLN (airway restriction) was observed in those with higher total flavonoid (adjusted odds ratio (aOR), higher vs. lowest quintile intake 0.58, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 0.36, 0.94), and pro-anthocyanidin intakes (aOR 0.47, 95% CI 0.27, 0.81). A higher FEV1/FVC was associated with higher intakes of total flavonoids and pro-anthocyanidins (adjusted correlation coefficient (a β-coeff 0.33, 0.10, 0.57 and a β-coeff 0.44, 95% CI 0.19, 0.69, respectively). After Simes’ procedure, the statistical significance of each of these associations was attenuated but remained below 0.05, with the exception of total flavonoids and airway restriction. Conclusions: This population-based study in European adults provides cross-sectional evidence of a positive association of total flavonoid intake and pro-anthocyanidins and ventilatory function, and a negative association with spirometric restriction in European adults. © 2018 by the authors. • A susceptibility locus for lung cancer maps to nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunit genes on 15q25
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 452:7187, s. 633-637
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death worldwide, with over one million cases annually. To identify genetic factors that modify disease risk, we conducted a genome-wide association study by analysing 317,139 single-nucleotide polymorphisms in 1,989 lung cancer cases and 2,625 controls from six central European countries. We identified a locus in chromosome region 15q25 that was strongly associated with lung cancer (P = 9 x 10(-10)). This locus was replicated in five separate lung cancer studies comprising an additional 2,513 lung cancer cases and 4,752 controls (P = 5 x 10(-20) overall), and it was found to account for 14% (attributable risk) of lung cancer cases. Statistically similar risks were observed irrespective of smoking status or propensity to smoke tobacco. The association region contains several genes, including three that encode nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunits (CHRNA5, CHRNA3 and CHRNB4). Such subunits are expressed in neurons and other tissues, in particular alveolar epithelial cells, pulmonary neuroendocrine cells and lung cancer cell lines, and they bind to N'-nitrosonornicotine and potential lung carcinogens. A non-synonymous variant of CHRNA5 that induces an amino acid substitution (D398N) at a highly conserved site in the second intracellular loop of the protein is among the markers with the strongest disease associations. Our results provide compelling evidence of a locus at 15q25 predisposing to lung cancer, and reinforce interest in nicotinic acetylcholine receptors as potential disease candidates and chemopreventative targets.

    • We carried out a genome-wide association study of lung cancer (3,259 cases and 4,159 controls), followed by replication in 2,899 cases and 5,573 controls. Two uncorrelated disease markers at 5p15.33, rs402710 and rs2736100 were detected by the genome-wide data (P - 2 x 10(-7) and P = 4 x 10(-6)) and replicated by the independent study series (P = 7 x 10(-5) and P = 0.016). The susceptibility region contains two genes, TERT and CLPTM1L, suggesting that one or both may have a role in lung cancer etiology.

  • Atmospheric doping effects in epitaxial graphene: correlation of local and global electrical studies
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2D Materials. - : IOP Publishing. - 2053-1583. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We directly correlate the local (20 nm scale) and global electronic properties of a device containing mono-, bi- and tri-layer epitaxial graphene (EG) domains on 6H-SiC (0001) by simultaneously performing local surface potential measurements using Kelvin probe force microscopy and global transport measurements. Using well-controlled environmental conditions we investigate the doping effects of N-2, O-2, water vapour and NO2 at concentrations representative of the ambient air. We show that presence of O-2, water vapour and NO2 leads to p-doping of all EG domains. However, the thicker layers of EG are significantly less affected. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the general consensus of O-2 and water vapour present in ambient air providing majority of the p-doping to graphene is a common misconception. We experimentally show that even the combined effect of O-2, water vapour, and NO2 at concentrations higher than typically present in the atmosphere does not fully replicate p-doping from ambient air. Thus, for EG gas sensors it is essential to consider naturally occurring environmental effects and properly separate them from those coming from targeted species.

  • Ingår i: Low Temperature Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 1063-777X .- 1090-6517. ; 31:5, s. 585-589
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Polycrystalline fullerite C60 intercalated with Xe atoms at 575 K and a pressure of 200 MPa was studied by powder x-ray diffraction. The integrated intensities of a few brighter reflections have been utilized to evaluate the occupancy of the octahedral interstitial sites in C60 crystals, which turned out to be (34±4)%, and in good agreement with another independent estimate. It is found that reflections of the (h00) type become observable in Xe-doped C60. The presence of xenon in the octahedral sites affects both the orientational phase transition as well as the glassification process, decreasing both characteristic temperatures as well as smearing the phase transition over a greater temperature range. Considerable hysteretic phenomena have been observed close to the phase transition and the glassification temperature. The signs of the two hysteresis loops are opposite. There is reliable evidence that at the lowest temperatures studied the thermal expansion of the doped crystal is negative under cool-down.

  • The Implementation in Context (ICON) Framework: A meta-framework of context domains, attributes and features in healthcare
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Health Research Policy and Systems. - 1478-4505. ; 21:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background There is growing evidence that context mediates the effects of implementation interventions intended to increase healthcare professionals’ use of research evidence in clinical practice. However, conceptual clarity about what comprises context is elusive. The purpose of this study was to advance conceptual clarity on context by developing the Implementation in Context Framework, a meta-framework of the context domains, attributes and features that can facilitate or hinder healthcare professionals’ use of research evidence and the effectiveness of implementation interventions in clinical practice. Methods We conducted a meta-synthesis of data from three interrelated studies: (1) a concept analysis of published literature on context (n = 70 studies), (2) a secondary analysis of healthcare professional interviews (n = 145) examining context across 11 unique studies and (3) a descriptive qualitative study comprised of interviews with heath system stakeholders (n = 39) in four countries to elicit their tacit knowledge on the attributes and features of context. A rigorous protocol was followed for the meta-synthesis, resulting in development of the Implementation in Context Framework. Following this meta-synthesis, the framework was further refined through feedback from experts in context and implementation science. Results In the Implementation in Context Framework, context is conceptualized in three levels: micro (individual), meso (organizational), and macro (external). The three levels are composed of six contextual domains: (1) actors (micro), (2) organizational climate and structures (meso), (3) organizational social behaviour (meso), (4) organizational response to change (meso), (5) organizational processes (meso) and (6) external influences (macro). These six domains contain 22 core attributes of context and 108 features that illustrate these attributes. Conclusions The Implementation in Context Framework is the only meta-framework of context available to guide implementation efforts of healthcare professionals. It provides a comprehensive and critically needed understanding of the context domains, attributes and features relevant to healthcare professionals’ use of research evidence in clinical practice. The Implementation in Context Framework can inform implementation intervention design and delivery to better interpret the effects of implementation interventions, and pragmatically guide implementation efforts that enhance evidence uptake and sustainability by healthcare professionals.

  • Unraveling the histories of Proterozoic shales through in situ Rb-Sr dating and trace element laser ablation analysis
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Geology. - : Geological Society of America. - 0091-7613 .- 1943-2682. ; 50:1, s. 66-70
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Authigenic components in marine sediments are important archives for past environment reconstructions. However, defining reliable age constraints and assessing the effects of post depositional overprints in Precambrian sequences are challenging. We demonstrate a new laser-based analytical approach that has the potential to rapidly and accurately evaluate the depositional and alteration histories of Proterozoic shales. Our study employs a novel application of in situ Rb-Sr dating coupled with simultaneous trace-element analysis using reaction-cell laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-tandem mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS/MS). We present results from shales sourced from two wells in the Proterozoic McArthur Basin, northern Australia. These rocks have been widely used by previous studies as a key section for ancient biogeochemical and paleo-redox reconstructions. Shales from well UR5 yielded initial Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios, Rb-Sr ages, and rare earth element plus yttrium (REEY) patterns similar to those of a dolerite sampled from the same core. We propose that the UR5 samples chronicle hydrothermal alteration instigated by the dolerite intrusion. In contrast, a correlative shale from well UR6 yielded an age consistent with the expected depositional age (1577 +/- 56 Ma) with REEY and initial Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios similar to ca. 1.5 Ga seawater. We suggest that this sample records the minimum depositional age and early marine diagenetic history for this unit. This new technique can date Proterozoic shales quickly, cheaply, and with minimum sample preparation. Importantly, ages are triaged to differentiate between those recording primary marine versus secondary processes. This novel approach provides a potentially powerful tool for dating and fingerprinting the vast array of ancient marine shales for further studies of Earth systems through deep time.

  • Ingår i: European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0954-3007 .- 1476-5640. ; 66:8, s. 932-941
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Phytoestrogens are estradiol-like natural compounds found in plants that have been associated with protective effects against chronic diseases, including some cancers, cardiovascular diseases and osteoporosis. The purpose of this study was to estimate the dietary intake of phytoestrogens, identify their food sources and their association with lifestyle factors in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Single 24-hour dietary recalls were collected from 36 037 individuals from 10 European countries, aged 35-74 years using a standardized computerized interview programe (EPIC-Soft). An ad hoc food composition database on phytoestrogens (isoflavones, lignans, coumestans, enterolignans and equol) was compiled using data from available databases, in order to obtain and describe phytoestrogen intakes and their food sources across 27 redefined EPIC centres. RESULTS: Mean total phytoestrogen intake was the highest in the UK health-conscious group (24.9 mg/day in men and 21.1 mg/day in women) whereas lowest in Greece (1.3 mg/day) in men and Spain-Granada (1.0 mg/day) in women. Northern European countries had higher intakes than southern countries. The main phytoestrogen contributors were isoflavones in both UK centres and lignans in the other EPIC cohorts. Age, body mass index, educational level, smoking status and physical activity were related to increased intakes of lignans, enterolignans and equol, but not to total phytoestrogen, isoflavone or coumestan intakes. In the UK cohorts, the major food sources of phytoestrogens were soy products. In the other EPIC cohorts the dietary sources were more distributed, among fruits, vegetables, soy products, cereal products, non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages. CONCLUSIONS: There was a high variability in the dietary intake of total and phytoestrogen subclasses and their food sources across European regions.
