  • Goldstone tensor modes
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: J. High Energy Phys. 9902:001,1999.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the context of brane solutions of supergravity, we discuss a general method to introduce collective modes of any spin by exploiting a particular way of breaking symmetries. The method is applied to the D3, M2 and M5 branes and we derive explicit expressions for how the zero-modes enter the target space fields, verify normalisability in the transverse directions and derive the corresponding field equations on the brane. In particular, the method provides a clear understanding of scalar, spinor, and rank r tensorial Goldstone modes, chiral as well as non-chiral, and how they arise from the gravity, Rarita-Schwinger, and rank r+1 Kalb-Ramond tensor gauge fields, respectively. Some additional observations concerning the chiral tensor modes on the M5 brane are discussed.

  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Int.J.Mod.Phys.A13:4691-4716,1998.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We examine general properties of superembeddings, i.e., embeddings of supermanifolds into supermanifolds. The connection between an embedding procedure and the method of non-linearly realised supersymmetry is clarified, and we demonstrate how the latter arises as a special case of the former. As an illustration, the super-5-brane in 7 dimensions, containing a self-dual 3-form world-volume field strength, is formulated in both languages, and provides an example of a model where the embedding condition does not suffice to put the theory on-shell.

The twistor solution survives in a modified form even in the presence of the heterotic fermions.

  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1029-8479 .- 1126-6708. ; 2008:6, s. 11-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We derive the stability conditions for the M5-brane in topological M-theory using k-symmetry. The non-linearly self-dual 3-form on the world-volume is necessarily non-vanishing, as is the case also for the 2-form field strengths on coisotropic branes in topological string theory. It is demonstrated that the self-duality is consistent with the stability conditions, which are solved locally in terms of a tensor in the representation 6 of SU(3) subset of G(2). The double dimensional reduction of the M5-brane is the D4-brane, and its direct reduction is an NS5-brane. We show that the equation of motion for the 3-form on the NS5-brane wrapping a Calabi-Yau space is exactly the Kodaira-Spencer equation, providing support for a string-fivebrane duality in topological string theory.

    • We discuss various aspects of dimensional reduction of gravity with theEinstein-Hilbert action supplemented by a lowest order deformation formed asthe Riemann tensor raised to powers two, three or four. In the case of R^2 wegive an explicit expression, and discuss the possibility of extended cosetsymmetries, especially SL(n+1,Z) for reduction on an n-torus to threedimensions. Then we start an investigation of the dimensional reduction of R^3and R^4 by calculating some terms relevant for the coset formulation, aiming inparticular towards E_8(8)/(Spin(16)/Z_2) in three dimensions and aninvestigation of the derivative structure. We emphasise some issues concerningthe need for the introduction of non-scalar automorphic forms in order torealise certain expected enhanced symmetries.

  • Membranes for Topological M-Theory
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We formulate a theory of topological membranes on manifolds with G_2 holonomy. The BRST charges of the theories are the superspace Killing vectors (the generators of global supersymmetry) on the background with reduced holonomy G_2. In the absence of spinning formulations of supermembranes, the starting point is an N=2 target space supersymmetric membrane in seven euclidean dimensions. The reduction of the holonomy group implies a twisting of the rotations in the tangent bundle of the branes with ``R-symmetry'' rotations in the normal bundle, in contrast to the ordinary spinning formulation of topological strings, where twisting is performed with internal U(1) currents of the N=(2,2) superconformal algebra. The double dimensional reduction on a circle of the topological membrane gives the strings of the topological A-model (a by-product of this reduction is a Green-Schwarz formulation of topological strings). We conclude that the action is BRST-exact modulo topological terms and fermionic equations of motion. We discuss the role of topological membranes in topological M-theory and the relation of our work to recent work by Hitchin and by Dijkgraaf et al.

  • U-Duality and the Compactified Gauss-Bonnet Term
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the complete toroidal compactification of the Gauss-Bonnet Lagrangian from D dimensions to D-n dimensions. Our goal is to investigate the resulting action from the point of view of the "U-duality" symmetry SL(n+1,R) which is present in the tree-level Lagrangian when D-n=3. The analysis builds upon and extends the investigation of the paper [arXiv:0706.1183], by computing in detail the full structure of the compactified Gauss-Bonnet term, including the contribution from the dilaton exponents. We analyze these exponents using the representation theory of the Lie algebra sl(n+1,R) and determine which representation is the relevant one for quadratic curvature corrections. By interpreting the result of the compactification as a leading term in a large volume expansion of an SL(n+1,Z)-invariant action, we conclude that the overall exponential dilaton factor should not be included in the representation structure. As a consequence, all dilaton exponents correspond to weights of sl(n+1,R), which, nevertheless, remain on the positive side of the root lattice.

  • 1987
  • Ingår i: Phys. Rev. D36 (1987) 1766.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The covariant Green-Schwarz action for a superstring has never been quantized covariantly. The physics behind this is discussed. We then consider the corresponding point-particle action in four dimensions, and write down a master action from which it can be obtained as a gauge choice: the ‘‘space-time gauge.’’ There is also a ‘‘twistor gauge,’’ in which covariant quantization is straightforward (as noted previously by Shirafuji).

    • We consider local counterterms to 4-dimensional gravity and 4- and 10-dimensional super-gravity theories in the light-front gauge. With the technique developed, we show that there are no local counterterms other than the lagrangian possible in the superstring thoeries. This is a strong indication that these theories are finite or at least renormalizable to allorders in the perturbation expansions.

  • Covariant superstrings do not admit covariant gauge fixing
  • 1984
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The covariant action for superstrings is analysed by means of the Diracmethod, and the light front action is derived. The action gives riseto second class constraints which cannot be solved for in a covariant way. Covariant gauge fixing, in any conventional sense, cannot be applied, which leaves the question of covariant quantisationof the superstrings open. A similar statement holds for a masslesssupersymmetric point-particle.

  • 1983
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • It has been suggested that field theories for arbitrary spin can be defined, using the light front formulation of dynamics. The higher order termsin the actions are discussed in this paper. We show that the gravity actioncan be written without ``time''-derivatives in the interaction termsin a way which appears generalisable to higher spin. Some problems forhigher spins are identified and briefly discussed.

  • Particles, twistors and the division algebras
  • 1987
  • Ingår i: Nucl.Phys.B302 (1988) 81.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study twistorial mechanics of particles and super-particles in six dimensions. To this end we formulate (in a general division algebra framework) a twistor theory in D = 6 based on quaternionic numbers, and prove the equivalence between this version of particle dynamics and the ordinary one. The super-twistors define a covariant and gauge invariant concept of a super world-line and allow us to write an action for the supersymmetric particle that is not plagued by the content of second class constraints that prevents a covariant quantization in the space-time picture. The notion and geometry of projectile twistor space, and its connection to Minkowski space, are examined and shown to directly generalize the results in D = 3, 4. Quantization is performed and analytic quaternionic eigenfunctions and integrations are discussed. We also draw some conclusions on the possible generalization to ten dimensions.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: arXiv.org/abs/0805.1782.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We formulate the dynamics for the NS5-brane of the A-model, via the 'maximal form' method, which couples all background fields to the world-volume. This procedure provides the extra one- and five-forms fields of the extended Hitchin model. The generalised B-model emerges as the world-volume theory of this brane. The starting point of the construction is an embedding of the brane in a superspace geometry with 16 fermionic directions. The correspondence with Hitchin's formulation in terms of pure spinors is explained.

  • 2004
  • Ingår i: J. High Energy Phys. 0502 (2005) 020.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We outline a formulation of membrane dynamics in D=8 which is fully covariant under the U-duality group SL(2,Z) x SL(3,Z), and encodes all interactions to fields in the eight-dimensional supergravity, which is constructed through Kaluza--Klein reduction on T^3. Among the membrane degrees of freedom is an SL(2,R) doublet of world-volume 2-form potentials, whose quantised electric fluxes determine the membrane charges, and are conjectured to provide an interpretation of the variables occurring in minimal representations of U-duality groups. We solve the relevant equations for the action for a restricted class of supergravity backgrounds. Some comments are made on supersymmetry and lower dimensions.

    • We consider the concept of a generalised manifold in the O(d,d) setting, i.e., in double geometry. The conjecture by Hohm and Zwiebach for the form of finite generalised diffeomorphisms is shown to hold. Transition functions on overlaps are defined. Triple overlaps are trivial concerning their action on coordinates, but non-trivial on fields, including the generalised metric. A generalised manifold is an ordinary manifold, but the generalised metric on the manifold carries a gerbe structure. We show how the abelian behaviour of the gerbe is embedded in the non-abelian T-duality group. We also comment on possibilities and difficulties in the U-duality setting.

    • We investigate the generalised diffeomorphisms in M-theory, which are gauge transformations unifying diffeomorphisms and tensor gauge transformations. After giving an En(n)-covariant description of the gauge transformations and their commutators, we show that the gauge algebra is infinitely reducible, i.e., the tower of ghosts for ghosts is infinite. The Jacobiator of generalised diffeomorphisms gives such a reducibility transformation. We give a concrete description of the ghost structure, and demonstrate that the infinite sums give the correct (regularised) number of degrees of freedom. The ghost towers belong to the sequences of rep- resentations previously observed appearing in tensor hierarchies and Borcherds algebras. All calculations rely on the section condition, which we reformulate as a linear condition on the cotangent directions. The analysis holds for n

    • We construct generalised diffeomorphisms for E9 exceptional field theory. The trans- formations, which like in the E8 case contain constrained local transformations, close when acting on fields. This is the first example of a generalised diffeomorphism alge- bra based on an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra and an infinite-dimensional coordi- nate module. As a byproduct, we give a simple generic expression for the invariant tensors used in any extended geometry. We perform a generalised Scherk–Schwarz reduction and verify that our transformations reproduce the structure of gauged supergravity in two dimensions. The results are valid also for other affine algebras.

This provides a geometrisation of the Geroch symmetry appearing on dimensional reduction of a gravitational theory to two dimensions. The formalism is adapted to the underlying tensor hierarchy algebra, and will serve as a stepping stone towards the geometrisation of other infinite-dimensional, e.g. hyperbolic, symmetries.

  • String field theory with chiral coordinates
  • 1987
  • Ingår i: Nucl.Phys.B293 (1987) 114.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interesting string theories, such as the heterotic string, involve chiral coordinates, that is coordinates which are either right-moving or left-moving on the world sheet. In this paper the field theoretic formulation of such theories is studied with most emphasis on the light-cone gauge method although the main techniques would also apply in the various covariant approaches to string field theory. In the heterotic string the internal symmetry is described in terms of eight left-moving complex bosonic coordinates in a manner which parallels the treatment of fermionic Grassmann coordinates. The wave functions, and hence the free string fields, are described in these coordinates and the three-string interaction is derived from the requirements of supersymmetry and Lorentz invariance both in its functional form and in terms of its oscillator modes.

    • In Kac's classification of finite-dimensional Lie superalgebras, the contragredient ones can be constructed from Dynkin diagrams similar to those of the simple finite-dimensional Lie algebras, but with additional types of nodes. For example, A(n-1,0) = s (1|n) can be constructed by adding a "gray" node to the Dynkin diagram of An-1 = s (n), corresponding to an odd null root. The Cartan superalgebras constitute a difierent class, where the simplest example is Wpnq, the derivation algebra of the Grassmann algebra on n generators. Here we present a novel construction of Wpnq, from the same Dynkin diagram as A(n-1,0), but with additional generators and relations.

    • We give an analog of a Chevalley-Serre presentation for the Lie superalgebras W(n) and S(n) of Cartan type. These are part of a wider class of Lie superalgebras, the so-called tensor hierarchy algebras, denoted W(g) and S(g), where g denotes the Kac-Moody algebra A(r), D-r or E-r. Then W(A(n-1)) and S(A(n-1)) are the Lie superalgebras W(n) and S(n). The algebras W(g) and S(g) are constructed from the Dynkin diagram of the Borcherds-Kac-Moody superalgebras B(g) obtained by adding a single grey node (representing an odd null root) to the Dynkin diagram of g. We redefine the algebras W(A(r)) and S(A(r)) in terms of Chevalley generators and defining relations. We prove that all relations follow from the defining ones at level >= -2. The analogous definitions of the algebras in the D- and E-series are given. In the latter case the full set of defining relations is conjectured.

    • The b ghost, or b operator, used for fixing Siegel gauge in the pure spinor superfield formalism, is a composite operator of negative ghost number, satisfying (Formula presented.), where q is the pure spinor differential (BRST operator). It is traditionally constructed using non-minimal variables. However, since all cohomology has minimal representatives, it seems likely that there should be versions of physically meaningful operators, also with negative ghost number, using only minimal variables. The purpose of this letter is to demonstrate that this statement holds by providing a concrete construction in (Formula presented.) super-Yang–Mills theory, and to argue that it is a general feature in the pure spinor superfield formalism.

    • We construct spectra of supersymmetric higher spin theories in D = 4, 5 and 7 from twistors describing massless (super-)particles on AdS spaces. A massless twistor transform is derived in a geometric way from classical kinematics. Relaxing the spin-shell constraints on twistor space gives an infinite tower of massless states of a "higher spin particle", generalizing previous work of Bandos et al.. This can generically be done in a number of ways, each defining the states of a distinct higher spin theory, and the method provides a systematic way of finding these. We reproduce known results in D = 4, minimal supersymmetric 5- and 7-dimensional models, as well as supersymmetrisations of Vasiliev's Sp-models as special cases. In the latter models a dimensional enhancement takes place, meaning that the theory lives on a space of higher dimension than the original AdS space, and becomes a theory of doubletons. This talk was presented at the XIX-th Max Born Symposium "Fundamental Interactions and Twistor-Like Methods", September 2004, in Wrocław, Poland.

    • An alternative path is taken for deriving an action for the supersymmetric 5-brane in 11 dimensions. Selfduality does not follow from the action, but is consistent with the equations of motion for arbitrary supergravity backgrounds. The action involves a 2-form as well as a 5-form world-volume potential; inclusion of the latter makes the action, as well as the non-linear selfduality relation for the 3-form field strength, polynomial. The requirement of invariance under kappa-transformations determines the form of the selfduality relation, as well as the action. The formulation is shown to be equivalent to earlier formulations of 5-brane dynamics.

    • A division algebra twistor transform for the variables of a bosonic string in D=3,4,6 or 10 is proposed. The transform is also extended with the coordinates of an “internal” Minkowski space to obtain full symmetry between internal and external spinor indices. The constraint algebra contains a Virasoro generator coupled to a Kac-Moody algebra of Lorentz transformations. The full algebra is field dependent due to non-bilinearity of the hamiltonian.

  • An introduction to analytical mechanics
  • 2009
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The present edition of this compendium is intended to be a complement to the textbook “Engineering Mechanics” by J.L. Meriam and L.G. Kraige (MK) for the course ”Mekanik F del 2” given in the first year of the Engineering physics (Teknisk fysik) programme at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg. Apart from what is contained in MK, this course also encompasses an elementary understanding of analytical mechanics, especially the Lagrangian formulation. In order not to be too narrow, this text contains not only what is taught in the course, but tries to give a somewhat more general overview of the subject of analytical mechanics. The intention is that an interested student should be able to read additional material that may be useful in more advanced courses or simply interesting by itself. The chapter on the Hamiltonian formulation is strongly recommended for the student who wants a deeper theoretical understanding of the sub ject and is very relevant for the connection between classical mechanics (”classical” here denoting both Newton’s and Einstein’s theories) and quantum mechanics. The mathematical rigour is kept at a minimum, hopefully for the benefit of physical understanding and clarity. Notation is not always consistent with MK; in the cases it differs our notation mostly conforms with generally accepted conventions. The text is organised as follows: In Chapter 1 a background is given. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 contain the general setup needed for the Lagrangian formalism. In Chapter 5 Lagrange’s equation are derived and Chapter 6 gives their interpretation in terms of an action. Chapters 7 and 8 contain further developments of analytical mechanics, namely the Hamiltonian formulation and a Lagrangian treatment of constrained systems. Exercises are given at the end of each chapter. Finally, a translation table from English to Swedish of some terms used is found. Many of the exercise problems are borrowed from material by Ture Eriksson, Arne Kihlberg and Göran Niklasson. The selection of exercises has been focused on Chapter 5, which is of greatest use for practical applications.

  • An off-shell superspace reformulation of D=4, N=4 super-Yang–Mills theory
  • 2017
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • D = 4, N = 4 super-Yang-Mills theory has an off-shell superspace formulation in terms of pure spinor superfields, which is directly inherited from the D = 10 theory. That superspace, in particular the choice of pure spinor variables, is less suitable for dealing with fields that are inherently 4-dimensional, such as the superfields based on the scalars, which are gauge-covariant, and traces of powers of scalars, which are gauge-invariant. We give a reformulation of D = 4, N = 4 super-Yang-Mills theory in N = 4 superspace, using inherently 4-dimensional pure spinors. All local degrees of freedom reside in a superfield based on the physical scalars. The formalism should be suited for calculations of correlators of traces of scalar superfields.

    • A couple of issues concerning the effective dynamics of D-branes in string theory are discussed. Primarily, I am concerned with linearization of the actions by introduction of non-propagating fields and a full super- and kappa-symmetric description of D-branes.

  • Bidivision algebra spinors in D=10 Minkowski geometry
  • 1991
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Some geometrical properties of spinors in ten-dimensional Minkowski spaceare analysed, and are demonstrated to generalise the concept ofpure spinors to bi-division algebra spinors. In a unified treatment, they are shown to transform under orthogonal extensions ofthe algebra of space rotations and to be subjected to certainpurity constraints.

    • The action for an 11-dimensional supermembrane contains a chiral Wess-Zumino-Witten model coupling to the E8 super-Yang-Mills theory on the end-of-the-world 9-brane. It is demonstrated that this boundary string theory is dictated both by gauge invariance and by kappa-symmetry.

  • D=3, N=8 conformal supergravity and the Dragon window
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - 1029-8479 .- 1126-6708. ; 2011:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We give a superspace description of D=3, N=8 supergravity. The formulation is off-shell in the sense that the equations of motion are not implied by the superspace constraints (but an action principle is not given). The multiplet structure is unconventional, which we connect to the existence of a "Dragon window", that is modules occurring in the supercurvature but not in the supertorsion. According to Dragon's theorem this cannot happen above three dimensions. We clarify the relevance of this window for going on the conformal shell, and discuss some aspects of coupling to conformal matter.

  • Deformations in closed string theory - canonical formulation and regularization
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Nucl.Phys. B464 (1996) 117.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study deformations of closed string theory by primary fields of conformal weight (1,1), using conformal techniques on the complex plane. A canonical surface integral formalism for computing commutators in a non-holomorphic theory is constructed, and explicit formulae for deformations of operators are given. We identify the unique regularization of the arising divergences that respects conformal invariance, and consider the corresponding parallel transport. The associated connection is metric compatible and carries no curvature.

  • Double supergeometry
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - 1029-8479 .- 1126-6708. ; 2016:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A geometry of superspace corresponding to double field theory is developed, with type II supergravity in D=10 as the main example. The formalism is based on an orthosymplectic extension OSp(d,d|2s) of the continuous T-duality group. Covariance under generalised super-diffeomorphisms is manifest. Ordinary superspace is obtained as a solution of the orthosymplectic section condition. A systematic study of curved superspace Bianchi identities is performed, and a relation to a double pure spinor superfield cohomology is established. A Ramond-Ramond superfield is constructed as an infinite-dimensional orthosymplectic spinor. Such objects in minimal orbits under the OSp supergroup ("pure spinors") define super-sections.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - 1029-8479 .- 1126-6708. ; 2015:7, s. 1-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate exceptional generalised diffeomorphisms based on E (8(8)) in a geometric setting. The transformations include gauge transformations for the dual gravity field. The surprising key result, which allows for a development of a tensor formalism, is that it is possible to define field-dependent transformations containing connection, which are covariant. We solve for the spin connection and construct a curvature tensor. A geometry for the Ehlers symmetry SL(n + 1) is sketched. Some related issues are discussed.
