  • Science and technology research and development in support to ITER and the Broader Approach at CEA
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 1741-4326 .- 0029-5515. ; 53:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In parallel to the direct contribution to the procurement phase of ITER and Broader Approach, CEA has initiated research & development programmes, accompanied by experiments together with a significant modelling effort, aimed at ensuring robust operation, plasma performance, as well as mitigating the risks of the procurement phase. This overview reports the latest progress in both fusion science and technology including many areas, namely the mitigation of superconducting magnet quenches, disruption-generated runaway electrons, edge-localized modes (ELMs), the development of imaging surveillance, and heating and current drive systems for steady-state operation. The WEST (W Environment for Steady-state Tokamaks) project, turning Tore Supra into an actively cooled W-divertor platform open to the ITER partners and industries, is presented.

  • Determining the likely place of HIV acquisition for migrants in Europe combining subject-specific information and biomarkers data
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Statistical methods in medical research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1477-0334 .- 0962-2802. ; 28:7, s. 1979-1997
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In most HIV-positive individuals, infection time is only known to lie between the time an individual started being at risk for HIV and diagnosis time. However, a more accurate estimate of infection time is very important in certain cases. For example, one of the objectives of the Advancing Migrant Access to Health Services in Europe (aMASE) study was to determine if HIV-positive migrants, diagnosed in Europe, were infected pre- or post-migration. We propose a method to derive subject-specific estimates of unknown infection times using information from HIV biomarkers’ measurements, demographic, clinical, and behavioral data. We assume that CD4 cell count (CD4) and HIV-RNA viral load trends after HIV infection follow a bivariate linear mixed model. Using post-diagnosis CD4 and viral load measurements and applying the Bayes’ rule, we derived the posterior distribution of the HIV infection time, whereas the prior distribution was informed by AIDS status at diagnosis and behavioral data. Parameters of the CD4–viral load and time-to-AIDS models were estimated using data from a large study of individuals with known HIV infection times (CASCADE). Simulations showed substantial predictive ability (e.g. 84% of the infections were correctly classified as pre- or post-migration). Application to the aMASE study ( n = 2009) showed that 47% of African migrants and 67% to 72% of migrants from other regions were most likely infected post-migration. Applying a Bayesian method based on bivariate modeling of CD4 and viral load, and subject-specific information, we found that the majority of HIV-positive migrants in aMASE were most likely infected after their migration to Europe.

  • Benchmarking of 50 nm features in thermal nanoimprint
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology B. - : American Vacuum Society. - 1520-8567. ; 25:6, s. 2373-2378
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this benchmarking is to establish a comparison of several tools and processes used in thermal NIL with Si stamps at the nanoscale among the authors' laboratories. The Si stamps have large arrays of 50 nm dense lines and were imprinted in all these laboratories in a similar to 100 nm thick mr-18010E film. Other materials, such as mr-17010E, were also tested. Good patterns were obtained and some limitations were identified. Reducing the pressure to 15 bars enables the printing of 50 nm structures without pulling them off. At higher pressures, some bending effects resulting in pattern deformation were observed. It was proven that a pressure of 1.5 bars is sufficient to imprint perfect 50 nm lines. The influence of the antiadhesive layer and mold design has been characterized by the demonstration of pulled off lines in some cases. Moreover, it has been shown that the scatterometry method is particularly useful for the characterization of 50 nm lines and that the residual layer thickness corresponds to the theoretical estimate as long as the lines are well defined. One process was demonstrated which combines high reproducibility with high throughput, achieving a cycle time of 2 min. (c) 2007 American Vacuum Society.

  • First-order Raman scattering of rare-earth containing i-MAX single crystals (Mo2/3RE1/3)(2)AlC (RE = Nd, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er)
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Materials. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2475-9953. ; 3:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Herein, we report on the growth of single crystals of various (Mo2/3RE1/3)(2)AlC (RE = Nd, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er) i-MAX phases and their Raman characterization. Using first principles, the wave numbers of the various phonon modes and their relative atomic displacements are calculated and compared to experimental results. Twelve high-intensity Raman peaks are identified as the fingerprint of this new family of rare-earth containing i-MAX phases, thus being a useful tool to investigate their corresponding composition and structural properties. Indeed, while a redshift is observed in the low-wave-number range due to an increase of the rare-earth atomic mass when moving from left to right on the lanthanide row, a blueshift is observed for most of the high-wave-number modes due to a strengthening of the bonds. A complete classification of bond stiffnesses is achieved based on the direct dependence of a phonon mode wave number with respect to the bond stiffness. Finally, STEM images are used to confirm the crystal structure.

  • Genome-wide association study reveals new insights into the heritability and genetic correlates of developmental dyslexia
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Molecular psychiatry. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-5578 .- 1359-4184. ; 26:7, s. 3004-3017
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a learning disorder affecting the ability to read, with a heritability of 40–60%. A notable part of this heritability remains unexplained, and large genetic studies are warranted to identify new susceptibility genes and clarify the genetic bases of dyslexia. We carried out a genome-wide association study (GWAS) on 2274 dyslexia cases and 6272 controls, testing associations at the single variant, gene, and pathway level, and estimating heritability using single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data. We also calculated polygenic scores (PGSs) based on large-scale GWAS data for different neuropsychiatric disorders and cortical brain measures, educational attainment, and fluid intelligence, testing them for association with dyslexia status in our sample. We observed statistically significant (p  < 2.8 × 10−6) enrichment of associations at the gene level, forLOC388780(20p13; uncharacterized gene), and forVEPH1(3q25), a gene implicated in brain development. We estimated an SNP-based heritability of 20–25% for DD, and observed significant associations of dyslexia risk with PGSs for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (atpT = 0.05 in the training GWAS: OR = 1.23[1.16; 1.30] per standard deviation increase;p  = 8 × 10−13), bipolar disorder (1.53[1.44; 1.63];p = 1 × 10−43), schizophrenia (1.36[1.28; 1.45];p = 4 × 10−22), psychiatric cross-disorder susceptibility (1.23[1.16; 1.30];p = 3 × 10−12), cortical thickness of the transverse temporal gyrus (0.90[0.86; 0.96];p = 5 × 10−4), educational attainment (0.86[0.82; 0.91];p = 2 × 10−7), and intelligence (0.72[0.68; 0.76];p = 9 × 10−29). This study suggests an important contribution of common genetic variants to dyslexia risk, and novel genomic overlaps with psychiatric conditions like bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and cross-disorder susceptibility. Moreover, it revealed the presence of shared genetic foundations with a neural correlate previously implicated in dyslexia by neuroimaging evidence.

  • First-order Raman scattering in three-layered Mo-based ternaries: MoAlB, Mo2Ga2C and Mo2GaC
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Raman Spectroscopy. - : WILEY. - 0377-0486 .- 1097-4555. ; 48:5, s. 631-638
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Here, we report, for the first time, on the first-order Raman spectra of the layered Mo-based ternaries: MoAlB, Mo2Ga2C and Mo2GaC. Polycrystalline samples were fabricated, and well-defined Raman spectra were recorded. When the experimental peak positions were compared with those predicted from density functional theory, good agreement was obtained, indirectly validating both. Furthermore, all modes in the three compounds were symmetry assigned. Copyright (c) 2017 John Wiley amp; Sons, Ltd.

  • A systematic evaluation of emerging mesh-like CMP NoCs
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: ANCS 2015 - 11th 2015 ACM/IEEE Symposium on Architectures for Networking and Communications Systems. - 9781467366335 ; , s. 159-170
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies alternative Network-on-Chip architectures for emerging many-core chip multiprocessors, by exploring the following design options on mesh-based networks: Multiple physical networks (P), cores concentration (C), express channels (X), it widths (W), and virtual channels (V). We exhaustively evaluate all combinations of the afore-mentioned parameters (P, C, X, W, V), using the energy-throughput ratio (ETR) as a metric to classify network congurations. Our experimental results show that, on one hand, with an appropriate selection of parameters (V,W), an optimized baseline 2D mesh offers the best possible ETR for NoCs with up to a few tens of cores (64-core NoC). More complicated networks, using concentration and express channels, can reduce the zero-load latency, but do not necessarily help to improve ETR. On the other hand, for larger CMPs, a 2D mesh with multiple physical networks is a better option: once optimized, this architectural choice can reduce the ETR by up to 46% for 256 cores.

  • Rare-earth (RE) nanolaminates Mo4RE4Al7C3 featuring ferromagnetism and mixed-valence states
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Materials. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2475-9953. ; 2:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rare-earth-based (RE) nanolaminates have attracted attention recently because of their complicated magnetism and their potential as precursors for strongly correlated two-dimensional materials. In this work, we synthesized a class of nanolaminates with a Mo4RE4Al7C3 chemistry, where RE = Ce or Pr. Powder samples of both phases were characterized with respect to structure and composition. Single crystals of Mo4Ce4Al7C3 were used for magnetization measurements. The crystal structure was investigated by means of x-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy. Magnetization analysis reveals a ferromagnetic ground state with a Curie temperature of similar to 10.5 K. X-ray absorption near-edge structure provides experimental evidence that Ce is in a mixed-valence state. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism shows that only the Ce atoms with 4f(1) configuration occupying one of the two possible sites are ferromagnetically coupled, with a saturation moment of similar to 1.2 mu(B) per atom. We thus classify Mo4Ce4Al7C3 as a ferromagnetic, mixed-valence compound.
