  • A holistic and rapid sustainability assessment tool for manufacturing SMEs
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: CIRP annals. - : Elsevier. - 0007-8506 .- 1726-0604. ; 63:1, s. 437-440
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sustainable development is a broad term and is complex in nature because it has three dimensions. While continuous management is necessary, especially for SMEs, there is a lack of easily applicable tools that assess the status of sustainability based on key performance indicators and that derive priorities for systematic improvement. Based on this information, this paper presents a holistic sustainability assessment tool for manufacturing SMEs. The tool is applicable on a factory level with reasonable effort, provides decision support for improvements and enables a cross-industry comparison. A case study at a Swedish company has been performed to verify the usability.

  • Direct digital manufacturing : definition, evolution, and sustainability implications
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 107, s. 615-625
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the hot topics currently in manufacturing domain is direct digital manufacturing. With introduction of cheap three-dimensional printers, the direct digital manufacturing seems to become a new manufacturing paradigm with an entirely different impact on society; nevertheless how this will impact the society and the differences between the paradigms are unclear. According to this background, this paper presents a comprehensive analysis of direct digital manufacturing from different perspectives in comparison to various traditional manufacturing paradigms. Authors are using a societal viewpoint to see, describe and analyse the subject instead of traditional manufacturing viewpoint. For the better understanding of direct digital manufacturing origins, a classification and historical background about available techniques are described. Furthermore, direct digital manufacturing as a paradigm is analysed and compared with craft production, mass production and mass customisation. Direct digital manufacturing's sustainability aspects related to social, economical and environmental dimensions are gathered and analysed for a better insight of this technique. A detailed case study demonstrates the energy use differences of direct digital manufacturing and mass production in depth. According to the present work, direct digital manufacturing has the possibility of combining the advantages of the other production paradigms and can have a positive impact on sustainable development; yet, there are several challenges to overcome both in technical and sociality aspects. A challenge within the social aspects can be the life style changes which can impact the job market, working environment, waste management and more.

  • Information Management for Factory Planning and Design
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is dedicated to the manufacturing industry for the improvement of information management within the factory planningand design domain, and for more efficient factory planning and design. Currently the manufacturing industry lacks sufficient methods for capturing, structuring, and representing information and knowledge for easy access, exchange, integration and reuse within the domain. Therefore the focus of this thesis is on information and knowledge management within factory planning and design, which involves two subjects; information management and factory planning and design. In this thesis information and knowledge are captured by different models for different purposes, with the viewpoint of the factory planner and designer. A concept model is developed for a unified understanding of terms. An activity model is developed to define the domain scope, information flow and is used as the core of the factory planning and realization pilot, which is also developed. Information models from different information standards have been evaluated for a future common information platform within factory design. Principles about how to apply standards and concept models to the factory design are presented and discussed.

  • Information management for the factory planning process
  • 2009
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is based on the present needs for the factory planning support, of which the most important ones are: • A structured reuse of knowledge and support for industries. Because today the industry handbook in factory planning is not satisfying enough to support this complex process. • Better methods to represent and communicate data between software within the factory layout area for easier data communication and thereby information access, exchange and reuse. To support the factory planning, based on the mentioned needs, a mapping of the present factory planning process is made based on knowledge from industry and academy. Since the factory planning process is a huge and complex process that no one can handle by themself, a puzzle work is performed. Based on gathered information and knowledge an activity model is developed, to structure the data and information. The model gives a better overview on the actual course of events and in this way also “captures” the most important information to be represented for data exchange among different software applications and different people. In this thesis the most important information in factory layout is gathered and structured in a concept model for factory layout. Since the concepts depend on the context in which they are used, it is extremely important to present every concept in its relationship with other related concepts within the area.  A general theory and state-of-the-art definitions in the area is presented and discussed for a factory planning information management system. An evaluation and discussion is made for the state-of-the-art software in the area of concern.

  • Integrating sustainability within the factory planning process
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: CIRP annals. - : Elsevier BV. - 0007-8506 .- 1726-0604. ; 61:1, s. 463-466
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research activities on sustainability in manufacturing often emphasize environmental and economic issues in specific processes. This research attempts to describe and integrate sustainability with its economic, environmental and social dimensions into the well formulated process of factory planning. A model is developed to describe relations between factory buildings, manufacturing equipment, sustainability aspects and the process of factory planning. The model provides guidance for the decision-making during the planning and design stage. By revealing different kinds of interconnections, the understanding of the complexity within factories is improved. A case study is performed on a container-sized factory to verify the model usability.

  • User friendly development architecture for standardised modelling : STEP Toolbox
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Manufacturing Research. - : Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.. - 1750-0591. ; 9:4, s. 429-447
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Standardised information modelling is currently an important solution of enhancing the interoperability of computer-aided technology (CAx) systems in the manufacturing industry. The success of this solution is critically dependent on the complexity of data structure and implementation methodology. This study presents development architecture, STEP toolbox, which enables users to implement information standards via a simplified process with minimised knowledge requirements. This study starts with an analysis of relevant user groups for different types of tasks and knowledge requirements. Then STEP toolbox is presented as the simplified development architecture that consists of conceptual modelling and an object-oriented application programming interface (API). It is more convenient for typical developers than the conventional implementation methodology. Based on results from test cases for implementing three prototypes, a two-month learning process required for average developers of the information standards is expected to be eliminated.

  • VEGFR2-Mediated Vascular Dilation as a Mechanism of VEGF-Induced Anemia and Bone Marrow Cell Mobilization
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Cell Reports. - : Elsevier (Cell Press): OAJ / Elsevier. - 2211-1247. ; 9:2, s. 569-580
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Molecular mechanisms underlying tumor VEGF-induced host anemia and bone marrow cell (BMC) mobilization remain unknown. Here, we report that tumor VEGF markedly induced sinusoidal vasculature dilation in bone marrow (BM) and BMC mobilization to tumors and peripheral tissues in mouse and human tumor models. Unexpectedly, anti-VEGFR2, but not anti-VEGFR1, treatment completely blocked VEGF-induced anemia and BMC mobilization. Genetic deletion of Vegfr2 in endothelial cells markedly ablated VEGF-stimulated BMC mobilization. Conversely, deletion of the tyrosine kinase domain from Vegfr1 gene (Vegfr1(TK-/-)) did not affect VEGF-induced BMC mobilization. Analysis of VEGFR1(+)/VEGFR2(+) populations in peripheral blood and BM showed no significant ratio difference between VEGF-and control tumor-bearing animals. These findings demonstrate that vascular dilation through the VEGFR2 signaling is the mechanism underlying VEGF-induced BM mobilization and anemia. Thus, our data provide mechanistic insights on VEGF-induced BMC mobilization in tumors and have therapeutic implications by targeting VEGFR2 for cancer therapy.

  • A decision support tool for the energy efficient selection of process plans
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Mechatronics and Manufacturing Systems. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1753-1039. ; 8:1-2, s. 63-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Energy management has become one of the top priorities in all sectors of the economy originating from both legislative obligations and energy cost. The manufacturing sector accounts for more than 30% of the total energy demand. Industrial practice relies on methods such as energy auditing, energy monitoring and control. However, this approach can be considered as reactive, since the energy requirements for manufacturing a specific part are not considered during the planning of the production. A proactive approach is lacking that would allow the design and planning of the process plan strategy with the energy efficiency of the processes being one of the decision-making criteria. The objective of the present paper is to propose and validate a decision support tool for assessing the energy efficiency of alternative process plans. The decision support is based on energy auditing, life-cycle assessment and TOPSIS method for ranking various alternative process plans. The tool has been validated in a high pressure ceramics casting plant.

  • Software Evaluation Criteria for Rapid Factory Layout Planning, Design and Simulation
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: 45th CIRP Conference on Manufacturing Systems 2012. - : Elsevier. ; , s. 299-304
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this paper is to specify functional requirements on software for rapid factory planning and design in a digital factory context. In comparison with other studies that focus on particular aspects of layout development, this work deploys a comprehensive approach, based on industrial needs, to determine main functionalities for factory layout software. The research considers integration of different layouts where original equipment manufacturer and other stakeholders involved in factory layout design collaborate with each other to develop, or extend a factory. Therefore; engineering change management and data exchange in a system neutral format are taken into account as main pillars.

  • The effect of technology development on components machined in the current production system used by the OEMs in the truck industry
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 56th CIRP International Conference on Manufacturing Systems, CIRP CMS 2023. - : Elsevier B.V.. ; , s. 1588-1593
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The transport sector is growing and so is the awareness of the environmental impact from fossil fuels. This calls for changes in how road transport is powered, driven by both rules and regulations and from customer and societal expectations. There are several technical solutions to reduce and finally replace the use of fossil fuels currently discussed both in academia and industry and those solutions are at different maturity levels. The aim of this research is to investigate how the introduction of new technologies effects the evolvement of the components in the powertrain. This knowledge will be valuable for the truck industry OEMs to support the transition of the production system to match future needs. This is done in two parts. First, a semi-structured interview with experts from the automotive industry was conducted, then a literature study. The research shows that several powertrain technologies will exist, optimized for different markets and applications. On a component level, effort will be made to reduce the losses in the powertrain and the strive for efficiency will lead to higher requirements on geometrical quality, tighter tolerances, and surface requirements.
