  • From the Gezi Park Protests to the Akbelen Forest : Care in the Context of Democracy and Political Dissent
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Environmental Communication. - 1752-4032 .- 1752-4040. ; 18:1-2, s. 173-177
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this essay, a brief history of environmental protests in Turkey will be followed by a discussion connected to two central frameworks: the logic of extractivism and care. Specifically, we argue that analysis of events such as the recent protests in the Akbelen Forest, just as the Gezi Park protests over a decade ago, need to account for the fact that a great deal of environmentalism and environmental activism is linked to broader social and political critique, particularly in countries such as Turkey with what is described as a “neo-authoritarian” or “new authoritarian” administration. We argue that these events and the ways in which they have materialized point to the need to pay further attention to intersections such as narrated space and spaces of narrativity, in this particular case, vis-à-vis care, democracy and political dissent.

  • The Arab Spring As Meta-Event and Communicative Spaces
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Television and New Media. - : SAGE Publications. - 1527-4764 .- 1552-8316. ; 14:4, s. 351-364
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa, immediately labeled the Arab Spring, are best described as processes rather than outcomes. Despite being a common area of media focus due to decades-long geopolitics, the Arab Spring, as a mediatized meta-event, has led to the reemergence of the region as a discursive territory. The communicative spaces that opened up during and in the aftermath of the uprisings allowed for a multiplicity of topics to reenter public discourse across local, national, and transnational scales. In the process, seasoned debates such as religious sectarianism and democratic institutionalization gained magnitude. More specific debates such as Turkey's role as a model/antimodel added new discursive aspects to the multitopic ensemble. The purpose of this article is to reflect on the communicative and scalar dimensions in the mediation of the Arab Spring by way of taking the debates on Turkey as a case in point.

  • The mediation of migration and states of exception
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: The Handbook of Diasporas, Media, and Culture. - : Wiley. ; , s. 373-384
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This decade has been marked by a series of shifts in the representation of migrants and refugees in the European media. These shifts, however, must be seen in relation to a number of fundamental, underlying components of media coverage of refugees, migrants, and what has been termed the “refugee crisis.” In this chapter, we take the recent events in the United States as a point of departure for discussing the media coverage of migrants, refugees, and diasporic communities in Europe, as well as a more specific look at Sweden, in order to consider the nature of the migrant/refugee discussion (from economics to culture to terrorism) in relation to the fluidity of the lines between migrant and refugee and the placement of these groups into “states of exception.” To conclude, we present an argument as to how critical geopolitics in conjunction with media and communication studies offers a meaningful framework to make sense of these shifting lines.

  • Appearance and photographs of people in flight : A qualitative study of photojournalistic practices in spaces of (forced) migration
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study explores photojournalistic practices by investigating how spaces of (forced) migration, as well as the people and objects moving in and across them, appeared in Swedish newspapers in 2015.Photographs are unique objects of study, as the presence of people in certain spaces becomes directly observable through them. By considering photographs as agentic entities resulting from the many encounters between people involved in the event of photojournalism, the focus is on the social and political relations that emerge from these encounters, which opens up for an examination of questions of citizenship and visibility in relation to photography. The inquiry scrutinises the traditional ontological framework for discussing photographs and the act of photography related to people in flight, which generally is limited to the content visible within the frame, implying that photographs are the products of one stable point of view – that of the photographer. This thesis offers insights into mediated and mediating ways of seeing and their implications by: (1) examining photojournalism and photographs as a combination of content, practice, and place-making that produces events of photojournalism; (2) linking these to the notion of spaces of appearance and the potential for political action that ensues; (3) providing a specific account of photojournalism as a practice that enables modes of self-presentation; and, (4) reflecting on encounters that unfold in the event of photojournalism due to the fact that photographs, as shareable stories, are reproduced and circulated in time and space. The analysis draws upon a primarily qualitative, multi-method approach, combining an interview study with photojournalists and a visual analysis of photographs published in four Swedish newspapers in 2015. Through an approach of watching photography, the study examines the spatial and temporal dimensions of photographs beyond the stillness imposed by the frame and offers an analysis centred on movement and place. Employing Arendt’s notion of appearance in terms of both photojournalists in spaces of (forced) migration and others who are moving in and across these spaces, the results indicate that photojournalism, as a space of appearance, potentially stretches beyond the moment of photography. The findings further show that photojournalism practices do not only visualise events of (forced) migration, but they facilitate the appearance of, and encounters with, people in flight. The event of photojournalism offers a space which recognises fleeing as an action. By appearing in photographs, people in flight regain part of the spontaneity that they have been deprived of as stateless individuals, giving them an opportunity to reappear before others as subjects of rights. The thesis concludes that photographs should not merely be construed as representations, but rather as presentations anew, with people’s appearance in photographs being testimony to their ability to self-present.

  • Arctic sea-ice and the communication of climate change
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Popular Communication. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1540-5702 .- 1540-5710. ; 15:4, s. 249-268
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Media play a major role in framing key political issues such as climate change, and the melting of the Arctic snow and ice has become a bellwether of global climate change through the mediations of the region and its wildlife. While Arctic change has scientific significance for understanding global warming, it also plays a key role in the popular communication of global climate change and its impacts. This article addresses questions such as how the Arctic and its sea ice have become become powerful images of climate change, and what roles scientific activities, technologies, and networks play in relation to media and mediation. Drawing upon earlier research on the role of the media and framing in relation to climate change in general and upon Arctic climate change in particular, we explore how media framings are linked with various dynamics such as scientific practice and the institutional structure of the media system.

  • Complicit Surveillance, Interveillance and the Question of Cosmopolitanism
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: New Media and Society. - : SAGE Publications. - 1461-4448 .- 1461-7315. ; 17:9, s. 1473-1491
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The institutional and meta-processual dimensions of surveillance have been scrutinized extensively in literature. In these accounts, the subjective, individual level has often been invoked in relation to subject–object, surveillor–surveilled dualities and in terms of the kinds of subjectivity modern and late-modern institutions engender. The experiential, ontological realm of the “mediatized everyday” vis-a-vis surveillance remains less explored, particularly from the phenomenological perspective of the lifeworld. Academic discourses of surveillance mostly address rhetorically oriented macro-perspectives. The same diagnosis largely applies to the debates on the cosmopolitanization process. The literature of cosmopolitan ism revolves around broad cultural and ethical transformations in terms of the relationship between Self and Other, individual and humanity, and the local and the universal. Our aim in this article is to conceptualize the dynamics that yield a cosmopolitan Self and an encapsulated Self under conditions of increasingly interactive and ubiquitous forms of mediation and surveillance.

  • Connecting Europe: : Politics of Information Society in the EU and Turkey
  • 2009
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the 1990s, in parallel with new media-related initiatives in the US and the Asia-Pacific region, the EU launched its own information society policies in an effort to become, the most competitive knowledge-based economy in the world by 2010. In addition to full members, the task of achieving a European Information Society for all was also expected of candidate countries, including Turkey. In Connecting Europe: Politics of Information Society in the EU and Turkey, taking the policy arena as a discursive space, Dr. Miyase Christensen explores the evolution of information society policies in the EU and Turkey. Globalization processes from the 1990s on are explored from the standpoint of contemporary media and communications theory and political economy. Conceptualizing the global and regional shifts in the context of social change and taking commodification and spatialization as entry points, the book presents a detailed account of some of the crucial developments to date (on both on the EU and Turkish sides) based upon in-depth interviews with key stakeholders. The factors that shape the political economy of the telecommunications and ICT sectors in both the EU and Turkey are increasingly complex, engendering new spaces of politics, economy and citizenship

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Media and Cultural Politics. - Bristol : Intellect. - 1740-8296 .- 2040-0918. ; 7:2, s. 209-224
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The role of pornography in contemporary media societies constitutes one of the underresearched areas in media and communication studies. The purpose of this article is to explore the potentiality latent in the user-porn-related Internet domains, blogs and forums – as extensions of offline agency and sociality – for motivating communicative action and engagement with civic practice in various forms. In this study, we utilize an interdisciplinary approach that feeds from social, political and cultural theory and we take ‘self-pornographic pursuit as cultural citizenship’ as a paradigmatic intersection. The discussion is based on our analysis of a variety of expressive venues (some purely online, some amalgamated with the offline) over the course of our preliminary research. Of these, we refer to two Swedish examples: Bodycontact, a sexual dating site, and Dirty Diaries, a feminist film project and the adjacent website, as illustrative of the theoretical arguments presented throughout our discussion.
