  • Towards an holistic view of the energy and environmental impacts of domestic media and IT
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450324731 ; , s. 1173-1182
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To date, research in sustainable HCI has dealt with eco-feedback, usage and recycling of appliances within the home, and longevity of portable electronics such as mobile phones. However, there seems to be less awareness of the energy and greenhouse emissions impacts of domestic consumer electronics and information technology. Such awareness is needed to inform HCI sustainability researchers on how best to prioritise efforts around digital media and IT. Grounded in inventories, interview and plug energy data from 33 undergraduate student participants, our findings provide the context for assessing approaches to reducing the energy and carbon emissions of media and IT in the home. In the paper, we use the findings to discuss and inform more fruitful directions that sustainable HCI research might take, and we quantify how various strategies might have modified the energy and emissions impacts for our participants.

  • Bearing an open "Pandora’s Box" : HCI for reconciling everyday food and sustainability
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction. - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 1073-0516 .- 1557-7325. ; 23:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The sustainability of food is a significant global concern with a drastic change required to mitigate complex social, environmental, and economic issues like climate change and food security for an ever increasing population. In this article, we set out to understand the place of food in people’s lives, their mundane yet surprisingly complex ways of sourcing their food, and the processes of transition, past and ongoing, that shape these choices. Our goal is to understand the potential role for digital interactions in supporting the various ways that food consumption can be made more sustainable. To inform this exercise, we specifically set out to contrast the journeys of committed sustainable “food pioneers” with more conventional mainstream consumers recruited in branches of a UK supermarket. This contrast highlights for both groups the various values, and “meaningfulness” attached to foods and meals in people’s lives, and suggests ways in which food choice and pro-sustainable practices can be supported at least in part by new digital technologies.

  • Domestic food and sustainable design : A study of university student cooking and its impacts
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI ’13). - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 9781450318990 ; , s. 2447-2456
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In four university student kitchens over twenty-one days, we captured participants’ food preparation activity, quantified the greenhouse gas emissions and direct energy connected to the food and cooking, and talked to participants about their food practices. Grounded in this uniquely detailed micro-account, our findings inform sustainable design for cooking and eating at home and quantify the potential impacts. We outline the relation of the impacts to our participants’ approaches to everyday food preparation, the organisation of their time, and the role of social meals. Our technique allows evaluation of opportunities for sustainable intervention design: at the appliance, in the digitally-mediated organisation of meals and inventory management, and more broadly in reflecting upon and reshaping diet.

  • ‘Fractures’ in food practices : Exploring transitions towards sustainable food
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Agriculture and Human Values. - : Springer Netherlands. - 0889-048X .- 1572-8366. ; 36:2, s. 225-239
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Emissions arising from the production and consumption of food are acknowledged as a major contributor to climate change. From a consumer’s perspective, however, the sustainability of food may have many meanings: it may result from eating less meat, becoming vegetarian, or choosing to buy local or organic food. To explore what food sustainability means to consumers, and what factors lead to changes in food practice, we adopt a sociotechnical approach to compare the food consumption practices in North West England with two differing consumer groups. The first, supermarket shoppers ‘embedded’ in the mainstream food regime; and the second, who self-identify as sustainable food practitioners, and who perform a range of sustainable food consumption practices. We examine how our two groups experience changes in food practices and identify ‘fractures’ stemming from lifecourse and public events that emerge as points where change might occur. We suggest that ‘sharing spaces’ would be one possibility for prompting and nurturing fractures that can lead to greater sustainability in food practices.

  • Different Together : Design for Radical Placemaking
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2023 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems. - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). ; , s. 1-16
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work responds to isolating urban places, and contributes new ways for thinking about placemaking. Progressing through autoethnography and prototyping, we critique design proposals with Lefebvre’s theory of utopia. There inhabitants can enjoy and shape their place together without risking depletion of their abilities and motivations to do so. The critique produces political sensibilities that help us make sense of common tensions among inhabitants, landowners, and visitors, and generate possible responses. The critique process itself illustrates how designing through critique with theory can help us think in new ways. This paper contributes a display of how design with critical theory can happen, ultimately to support our abilities and motivations to envision and make places of social flourishing that can respond to our socio-environmental crises.

  • "I'd Want to Burn the Data or at Least Nobble the Numbers" : Towards Data-mediated Building Management for Comfort and Energy Use
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: CSCW'17. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). ; , s. 2448-2461
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we explore the role of pervasive environmental sensor data in workplace building management. Current interactions between management and workplace occupants are limited by the gap between experiences of (dis)comfort (i.e. individual preferences and perceptions) and the rigid objectivity of organisational policies and procedures such as static setpoint temperatures for indoor spaces. Our hypothesis is that pervasive sensor data that captures the indoor climate can provide an effective platform from which to more successfully communicate about comfort and energy use. Through a qualitative study with building managers and occupants, we show that while data does not necessarily resolve these tensions, it provides an engaging forum for a more inclusive building management process, and we outline directions for taking a more conversational approach in the design of comfort and energy-use interventions for the workplace.

  • ThermoKiosk : Investigating roles for digital surveys of thermal experience in workplace comfort management
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems - Proceedings. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 9781450356206 - 9781450356213
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thermal comfort in shared workplaces is often contested and impacts productivity, wellbeing, and energy use. Yet, subjective and situated comfort experiences are rarely captured and engaged with. In this paper, we explore roles for digital surveys in capturing and visualising subjective experiences of comfort in situ for comfort management. We present findings from a 3-week field trial of our prototype system called ThermoKiosk, which we deployed in an open plan, shared office with a history of thermal comfort complaints. In interviews with occupants and members of facilities management, we find that the data and interactions can play an important role in initiating dialogue to understand and handle tensions, and point to design considerations for more systematically integrating them into workplace comfort practices. © 2018 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s).
