- The focus of this contribution lies in the significance of cultural heritage for various institutional and state actors, and its connection to the well-being of democracy within the country. It is widely acknowledged that Poland, between World War II and 1989, was within the sphere of influence of the Soviet state. Consequently, the teaching and interpretation of history in schools had to adhere to guidelines established by the Ministry of Education. However, the fact that the state retains authority over curricula and syllabi, with specific state institutions responsible for designing the educational program, is generally accepted, and there is a general consensus that in liberal democracies, someone must oversee the school curriculum. At the same time, it is also widely recognized that state institutions and their work on educational policies, as well as the content of education, can be influenced by present political interests. Therefore, the more intriguing question arises: at what point does state influence over the public’s understanding of the country’s history become so significant that it can be considered as state intervention in the national cultural heritage? In other words, when does history in the public sphere become uncomfortably unfamiliar and incomprehensible to generations who have personally experienced the past?

I denna artikel framhålls värdet av människors enskilda handlingar, speglade genom Ingrid Segerstedt Wiberg.

- My research focuses the professionalization of the diplomatic affairs between Poland and Sweden in the late 1950s and in 1960s. During the Cold War, soft power was an important persuasive approach to international relations, typically involving cultural influence. At the end of 1950s the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has established so-called Propaganda Department which had the task to create and spread an image of Poland abroad. This presentation will provide some examples of this image by looking at the exhibitions organized in Sweden in the years 1956-1960. It will discuss what kind of image was created and how it was controlled by the Polish authorities.

- On June 28 in 1914, Gavrilo Princip killed the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife during their visit to Sarajevo. Meant as a symbolic act in support of the creation of a Yugoslavian nation, the assassination triggered lethal dynamics which affected all continents of the globe in the end. Austria- Hungary’s war of retaliation against Serbia was expected to be over in a matter of weeks. However, the global entanglements of an already highly globalized world witnessed the emergence of what British historian Eric Hobsbawm called the age of catastrophe.Within just a few days, the war had spread so widely that it became known as the Great War. Yet still we are not fully aware of its global reach beyond Europe and Northern America: The First World War is still narrated as a primarily European war. On the occasion of the 100 year anniversary of the Great War, scholars from various academic disciplines will discuss the global dimensions of those years of warfare on the eve of the age of globalisation. In particular, the conference will discuss the global phenomenon of war enthusiasm at the outbreak of the war and the failure of the international Socialism to avoid it along several papers. Furthermore, presentations and discussions will focus on the globally spread British Empire, as well as on North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia. Doing that, the conference tries to draw assumptions regarding the question of war and peace then and now.The State of Peace Conference will take place at the conference centre of the Austrian Study Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution (ASPR) at Schlaining Castle. The conference is organised by ASPR in close cooperation with its partner institutions from the Conflict, Peace and Democracy Cluster (CPDC): the Centre for Peace Research and Peace Education (ZFF) at the University of Klagenfurt, the Institute for Conflict Research (IKF) as well as the Democracy Centre Vienna.

- The academic carriers of women in Germany began with their general admission to study at the universities, which started in 1909 and with their right to Habilitation, which was introduced in 1921. On April 7th 1933 the Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service was adopted in German Reich and the dismissals from the German research centers and universities enforced Jewish scientists of international reputation, professors of every discipline as well as a large number of younger men and women who were Privat-Dozents and assistants to search for continuation of life and work abroad. In my presentation I will argue that the changed political circumstances and the prelude to the Holocaust affected men and women in a different manner. An expression for the difference is the inauguration of the first monument for a female Jewish scientist in Germany, Lise Meitner, as late as in summer 2014. The main focus of my presentation will deal with the question what the exile meant to this new group of scientists and intellectuals. Taking some examples in individual biographical sketches of intellectual women in Swedish exile, I will emphasize on three main topics in order to avoid a purely performance-related consideration of the exiled women lives: the organization of the everyday life, the challenge of language and exile as a new sphere for the continuation of the professional work.

- Med tanke på den "europeiska minneskulturen" undersöker artikeln huruvida enskilda nationella diskurser om en historisk händelse kan sammanfogas. Analysen av uppslagsverkstexter om "de vita bussarna" visar att det finns en tendens inom den historiska kunskapsproduktionen för att skapa ett homogent, gemensamt skandinaviskt minne. Debatten i den norska pressen samt i svenska och danska publikationer är ett talande exempel för hur skillnader i de enskilda länderna framträder inom den skandinaviska kontexten och hur de formar representationer av historiska händelser i respektive nationella sammanhang. Tidsvittnens röster som bidrar till den livliga debatten i norsk press är ett bra exempel på en utmaning som skapades i mötet med den kritiska forskningens bidrag i ämnet. Debatten visar att det finns ett starkt motstånd att ifrågasätta redan etablerade och positivt laddade tolkningar av händelserna. Artikeln visar hur särskilda nationella berättelser av räddningsaktionen "de vita bussarna" och välkända personligheter som Folke Bernadotte har placerats i offentlig diskurs, i historieskrivning och uppslagsverk som "allmänt känt" och hur de är konstruerade i en viss form. De etablerades och accepterades av allmänheten. Samtidigt publiceras kritiska berättelser om aktionen men de hittar inte sin plats i det kollektiva minnet, med andra ord kommer de att "glömmas".

- In this article we elaborate on the possibility to combine a social constructivist perspective and oral history within one methodological framework in order to explore how identities are narrated and negotiated in relation to different situations, contexts and interviewers. In oral history, the purpose is often to “give voice” to marginalized or forgotten individuals or groups, to listen to their stories and give them the possibility to speak from their perspectives. We agree with these emancipatory aims of oral history. Simultaneously we deconstruct and analyze interviews in order to investigate identity constructions. We work with the concepts of intersectionality and narrated identity, which allow us to investigate how groups and individuals that are marginalized and discriminated negotiate their own and other identities. At the same time it is unclear if our interviewees understand these kinds of analysis of their narratives. In order to combine a social constructivist perspective and oral history in a fruitful way, we must be aware of this relation of power and explain to the interviewees what we are doing and why we are doing it. In a broader research perspective this deconstructive approach illustrates interesting assumptions about multidimensional identity constructions.

- Rent praktiskt är inskränkning av en persons handlingsutrymme sällan betraktad som våld, detta eftersom inskränkningarna ofta kan kopplas till sociala och institutionella sammanhang. I det sociala och institutionella sammanhanget tenderar man snarare att tänka på orättvisor än regelrätt våld, orättvisor som kan uppstå överallt. Trots att orättvisor kan uppfattas som våldsamma, uppstår tvivel kring huruvida de verkligen kan betraktas som ett uttryck för våld och i så fall vilken typ av våld det skulle handla om. Våld i sociala och institutionella sammanhang talas i forskningen om i termer av så kallat indirekt våld. Till skillnad mot direkt våld som utförs mellan individer, handlar indirekt våld mer om våldsamma effekter kopplat till hur sociala, statliga eller institutionella strukturer kan verka diskriminerande. Indirekt våld kallas också för strukturellt våld som ålderism, klassism, elitism, etnocentrism, nationalism, speciesism, rasism och sexism, vilka alla kan medföra våldsamma effekter för enskilda individer eller grupper – men där enskilda våldsutövande aktörer är svårare att identifiera. Detta bidrag reflekterar över en typ av strukturellt våld som är kopplad till hur kunskap skapas. Begreppet epistemiskt våld förklaras och konkretiseras med avstamp i ett historiskt exempel som sätter begreppet i ett sammanhang för att tydliggöra vilka uttrycksformer det kan ta.

- Seit 2017 bietet die Universitätsbibliothek in Lund einen Zugriff auf die übersetzte und digitalisierte Privatsammlung von Zeitzeugnissen polnischer KZ-Überlebender. Dieser Beitrag untersucht die Frage, warum und inwiefern Gendern als analytische Kategorie eine Bedeutung für die Sammlung hat. Der Artikel zeigt, wie Gendern eventuell helfen kann, das Fiasko der 1946 gestellten Förderanträge zu erklären, was später unvermeidlich zur Einstellung des kurzlebigen, doch aber besonderen Projekts geführt hat.

- Humanitarian aid to children of war. The organization of aid-related activities in the Örebro region 1919-1922The Swedish term krigsbarn, meaning children of war is a term used for the first time to describe children from countries affected by war 1914-1918; children, who were provided aid in the neutral countries. Sweden was one of the countries who aided a group of about 26 000 children during the years 1922-1924 and the coordination of this work was provided by the Swedish Red Cross.This contribution will give an insight into the process of implementation of the aid-related activities at the local level and map the mobilization of local authorities in the Örebro region. Moreover, it will reflect on the character of this aid by embodying the voices of these children, their families, and the individuals who helped them.The presentation is based on the collection called Red Cross Children of War stored at the Archival Center in Örebro.

- This presentation tackles upon one of the first oral history projects conducted after World Word II and investigates the documentation of survivors’ testimonies collected by the Polish Source Institute (Polski Instytut Źródłowy) in Lund. The aim is to shed light on the early Holocaust memory of the Jewish survivors which is a part of the larger, so-called Łakociński collection. The analysis is based on primary sources which is the PIŹ collection deposited today in the library of Lund Universityand the questions posed here are: What was the aim to collect the testimonies and who recorded this unique material? What experience was documented and what methods were used to collect the testimonies? What was different about the Jewish experience and the experience of the non-Jewish victims?
