    • We present thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) measurements for 42 galaxy clusters observed at 150 GHz with the APEX-SZ experiment. For each cluster, we model the pressure profile and calculate the integrated Comptonization Y to estimate the total thermal energy of the intraclustermedium (ICM). We compare the measured Y values to X-ray observables of the ICM from the literature (cluster gas mass M-gas, temperature T-X, and Y-X = MgasTX) that relate to total cluster mass. We measure power-law scaling relations, including an intrinsic scatter, between the SZE and X-ray observables for three subsamples within the set of 42 clusters that have uniform X-ray analysis in the literature. We observe that differences between these X-ray analyses introduce significant variance into the measured scaling relations, particularly affecting the normalization. For all three subsamples, we find results consistent with a selfsimilarmodel of cluster evolution dominated by gravitational effects. Comparing to predictions from numerical simulations, these scaling relations prefer models that include cooling and feedback in the ICM. Lastly, we measure an intrinsic scatter of similar to 28 per cent in the Y - Y-X scaling relation for all three subsamples.

    • ObjectivesTo examine the outcomes of the Elderly Persons in the Risk Zone study, which was designed to evaluate whether it is possible to delay deterioration if a health-promoting intervention is made when an older adult (≥80) is at risk of becoming frail and whether a multiprofessional group intervention is more effective in delaying deterioration than a single preventive home visit with regard to frailty, self-rated health, and activities of daily living (ADLs) at 3-month follow-up.DesignRandomized, three-armed, single-blind, controlled trial performed between November 2007 and May 2011.SettingTwo urban districts of Gothenburg, Sweden.ParticipantsFour hundred fifty-nine community-living adults aged 80 and older not dependent on the municipal home help service.InterventionA preventive home visit or four weekly multiprofessional senior group meetings with one follow-up home visit.MeasurementsChange in frailty, self-rated health, and ADLs between baseline and 3-month follow-up.ResultsBoth interventions delayed deterioration of self-rated health (odds ratio (OR) = 1.99, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.12-3.54). Senior meetings were the most beneficial intervention for postponing dependence in ADLs (OR = 1.95, 95% CI = 1.14-3.33). No effect on frailty could be demonstrated.ConclusionHealth-promoting interventions made when older adults are at risk of becoming frail can delay deterioration in self-rated health and ADLs in the short term. A multiprofessional group intervention such as the senior meetings described seems to have a greater effect on delaying deterioration in ADLs than a single preventive home visit. Further research is needed to examine the outcome in the long term and in different contexts.

    • Natural hazards such as landslides, floods, rockfalls, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, sinkholes, and snow avalanches represent potential risks to our infrastructures, properties, and lives. That potential will continue to escalate with current and continued human encroachment into risk areas. With the help of geophysical techniques many of those risks can be better understood and quantified, thereby minimized and at least partly mitigated through accurate, site-specific, and proper planning and engineering. On occasions these hazards simply cannot be avoided, but better characterization and therefore understanding of the subsurface geology and natural processes responsible for the threats is possible through integration of various cost-effective geophysical methods with relevant geotechnical, geomechanical, and hydrogeological methods. With the enhanced characterization possible when geophysics is incorporated into natural hazard analysis, potential risks can be better quantified and remediation plans tuned to minimize the threat most natural hazards present to civilizations. In this article we will first review common geophysical methods that can be and have been utilized in studying natural hazard prone areas, then we provide selected case studies and approaches using predominantly our own examples, and finally a look into the future detailing how these methods and technologies can be better implemented and thereby more time- and cost-effective and provide improved results.

    • Aims: Sorbitol and myo-inositol levels and morphology of sural nerve were compared with nerve function and clinical neuropathy in men with diabetic, impaired (IGT), and normal glucose tolerance. Methods: After neurography of sural nerve and determinations of sensory thresholds for vibration, warm and cold on the foot, whole nerve sural nerve biopsy was performed in 10 men with Type 1 diabetes mellitus, 10 with IGT, and 10 with normal glucose tolerance. Polyol levels were assessed by gas-liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. Results: Sural nerve amplitudes were significantly lower and sorbitol levels significantly higher in diabetic patients (median (interquartile range)) (3.7 (3.5) μV and 643 (412) pmol/mg protein, respectively) both compared with IGT (11.3 (10.6) μV; P = 0.04 and 286 (83) pmol/mg protein; P = 0.0032, respectively) and normally glucose tolerant (10.0 (11.6); P = 0.0142 and 296 (250) pmol/mg protein; P = 0.0191, respectively) subjects. There were no differences in nerve morphology between the three groups. Nerve myo-inositol levels correlated, however, positively with cluster density (r(s) = 0.56; P = 0.0054). In diabetic and IGT subjects, sural nerve amplitudes (2.6 (3.8) vs. 12.1 (10.6) μV; P = 0.0246) and myelinated nerve fibre density (MNFD; 4076 (1091) vs. 5219 (668) nerve fibres/mm2; P = 0.0021) were significantly lower in nine subjects with clinical neuropathy than in 10 without. Conclusions: Nerve degeneration (i.e. MNFD) correlated with clinical neuropathy but not with glucose tolerance status whereas nerve myo-inositol levels positively correlated with signs of nerve regeneration (i.e. increased cluster density).

    • BACKGROUND: Barrier membranes have been used to promote bone ingrowth on implants with dehiscences and fenestrations. Membranes also have been used to protect defects adjacent to implants placed at the time of extraction. The concept of guided bone regeneration relates to preferentially allowing cells from bone to migrate into various defects while excluding fibrous tissue and epithelium. The purpose of these procedures is to enhance bone-to-implant contact at the treated sites and to prevent mucosal complications. PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to report clinical outcomes for implants placed at the time of extraction and augmented with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) and followed for 5 years. The outcomes for implants with dehiscences and fenestrations augmented with ePTFE barriers and followed up to 5 years also are reported. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Four treatment centers participated in this study (Tucson, Gothenburg, Spokane, and Leuven). In the extraction group, teeth were removed for varying reasons, and Br?nemark implants were placed and stabilized within the host bone. Defects present at the coronal implant aspect were covered with ePTFE barrier membranes. Flaps were rotated to cover the membrane-treated sites. If exposure of the material occurred prior to second-stage surgery, the membranes were removed. Barriers remaining unexposed were removed at second-stage surgery. The implants were followed up to 5 years. In the fenestration and dehiscence group, implants with exposed threads were augmented with ePTFE barrier membranes. The barriers were removed at appropriate intervals, and the patients were followed up to 5 years. Radiographic measurements were made from nonstandardized periapical radiographs at abutment connection and 1, 3, and 5-year follow-up visits. RESULTS: Forty patients participated in the extraction group. They received a total of 49 implants. Three implants failed prior to loading. The 5-year cumulative survival rates for implants placed at the time of extraction were 93.9% and 93.8%, respectively, for maxillary and mandibular implants. The average maxillary mesial and distal marginal bone loss (1-5 yr) was 0.3 mm (standard deviation [SD] = 1.5) and 0.3 mm (SD = 1.0). In mandibles, the average mesial and distal bone loss (1-5 yr) was -0.2 mm (SD = 0.5) and -0.05 mm (SD = 0.6), respectively. The dehiscence and fenestration group included 44 patients. Twenty-six were followed for up to 5 years. Eight patients experienced total implant failure. For dehiscences and fenestrations, the cumulative survival rates were 76.8% and 83.8% for maxillary and mandibular implants, respectively. The average maxillary mesial and distal bone loss (1-5 yr) was 0.4 mm (SD = 0.8) and 0.2 mm (SD = 0.9), respectively. In mandibles, the average mesial and distal marginal bone loss was 0.3 mm (SD = 0.9) and 0.3 mm (SD = 0.8), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Implants placed at the time of extraction and augmented with ePTFE barrier membranes have favorable long-term predictability. On the other hand, long-term evaluation of implant dehiscences and fenestrations augmented with barrier membranes indicates that they have less favorable 5-year survival rates. Membrane augmentation of these may be questioned.

  • Impulsive suicide attempts among young people-A prospective multicentre cohort study in Sweden

    • Background: We aimed to compare the prevalence of impulsive suicide attempts (ISA) among young adults and those over 25 who present at hospital in connection with attempted suicide. We also aimed to identify factors associated with ISA in young adults and to assess medical severity as well as the probability of repeated suicide attempts in this age group. Method: A prospective multicentre cohort study included hospital known cases of suicide attempt (N = 666). The prevalence of ISA was compared between young adults (18-25) and adults aged > 26. We used logistic regression models to identify factors associated with ISA, associations of ISA with high medical severity and prediction of new fatal or non-fatal suicide attempts within 6 months. Results: 43.7% of the young patients had made an ISA, and 30.2% among those aged > 26 (p = 0.001). Among the young, substance use disorder was associated with ISA; crude odds ratio (OR) 2.0 (1.0-4.2), and adjusted OR 2.1 (0.99-4.4). Affective disorder and unemployment/sickness absence implied lower odds of ISA. ISA resulted in injuries of high medical severity as often as more planned attempts and non-fatal or fatal repetition within 6 months was equally common (30%) in both groups. Limitations: The study was set in psychiatric emergency services, which limits the generalizability. Conclusions: Clinicians should acknowledge that suicide attempts among youth often occur without previous planning and may result in medically severe injuries. The probability of new fatal or non-fatal suicide attempts should be kept in mind also after an impulsive suicide attempt.

    • Background: Self-harm among young adults is a common and increasing phenomenon in many parts of the world. The long-term prognosis after self-harm at young age is inadequately known. We aimed to estimate the risk of mental illness and suicide in adult life after self-harm in young adulthood and to identify prognostic factors for adverse outcome.Method: We conducted a national population-based matched case-cohort study. Patients aged 18-24 years (n = 13 731) hospitalized after self-harm between 1990 and 2003 and unexposed individuals of the same age (n = 137 310 ) were followed until December 2009. Outcomes were suicide, psychiatric hospitalization and psychotropic medication in short-term (1-5 years) and long-term (>5 years) follow-up.Results: Self-harm implied an increased relative risk of suicide during follow-up [hazard ratio (HR) 16.4, 95% confidence interval (CI) 12.9-20.9). At long-term follow-up, 20.3% had psychiatric hospitalizations and 51.1% psychotropic medications, most commonly antidepressants and anxiolytics. There was a six-fold risk of psychiatric hospitalization (HR 6.3, 95% CI 5.8-6.8) and almost three-fold risk of psychotropic medication (HR 2.8, 95% CI 2.7-3.0) in long-term follow-up. Mental disorder at baseline, especially a psychotic disorder, and a family history of suicide were associated with adverse outcome among self-harm patients.Conclusion: We found highly increased risks of future mental illness and suicide among young adults after self-harm. A history of a mental disorder was an important indicator of long-term adverse outcome. Clinicians should consider the substantially increased risk of suicide among self-harm patients with psychotic disorders.

    • Background: Self-harm is common in youth and an important risk factor for suicide. Certain self-harm methods might indicate a higher risk of suicide. The main aim of this study was to determine whether some methods of self-harm in adolescents (10-17 years) and young adults (18-24 years) are associated with a particularly high risk of suicide. A secondary aim was to ascertain how different self-harm methods might affect the probability of psychiatric follow up. Method: Five Swedish registers were linked in a national population-based cohort study. All nonfatal self-harm events recorded in specialist health care, excluding psychiatry and primary care services, among 10-24 year olds between 2000 and 2009 were included. Methods were classified as poisoning, cutting/piercing, violent method (gassing, hanging, strangulation/suffocation, drowning, jumping and firearms), other and multiple methods. Hazard Ratios (HR) for suicide were calculated in Cox regression models for each method with poisoning as the reference. Odds Ratios (OR) for psychiatric inpatient care were determined in logistic regression models. Analyses were adjusted for important covariates and stratified by age group and treatment setting (inpatient/outpatient). Results: Among adolescents with initial medical hospitalisation, use of a violent method was associated with a near eightfold increase in HR for suicide compared to self-poisoning in the adjusted analysis [HR 7.8; 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.2-19.0]. Among hospitalised young adult women, adjusted HRs were elevated fourfold for both cutting [4.0 (1.9-8.8)] and violent methods [3.9 (1.5-10.6)]. Method of self-harm did not affect suicide risk in young adult men. Adolescents using violent methods had an increased probability of psychiatric inpatient care following initial treatment for self harm. Conclusions: Violent self-harm requiring medical hospitalisation may signal particularly high risk of future suicide in adolescents (both sexes) and in young adult women. For the latter group this is the case for cutting requiring hospitalisation as well.

    • Information on protein expression, disease biomarkers or surrogate markers and genetic disorders can nowadays be achieved from analysis of complex biological samples by liquid separation coupled to mass spectrometric (MS) detection. This paper describes fast multidimensional separation by on-line liquid chromatography (LC) and capillary electrophoresis (CE), followed by electrospray ionization (ESI) Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR) MS detection. This detector provides ultrahigh resolution of the detected ions, mass accuracy at the ppm-level and high sensitivity. Most of the challenge of this system lies in the development of a new interface for the on-line coupling of LC to CE. The interface developed in poly(dimethylsiloxane) provides a RSD for injection repeatability of <3.5% and surface control for unspecific binding by deactivation with a cationic polymer, PolyE-323. We have evaluated the interface, as well as the overall system, with respect to robustness and deconvolution ability. Sequence coverage for bovine serum albumin (BSA) of 93% showed a high recovery of sample in the different transfer steps through the system. The detection limit for identification is 277 ng mL−1 (or 280 nM) on average for peptides. In the future, we expect LC-CE-MS to be a novel strategy for elucidating the chemistry of biological matrices.

    • Purpose: The aim of the study was to explore patients’ long-term experience of a congenital hand problem, and the consequences for daily life. Method: Fifteen participants with a median age 24 years (17–55 years), born with thumb hypoplasia/aplasia or thumb duplication were interviewed using a semi-structured interview guide. The interviews were subjected to qualitative content analysis. Results: Although the mobility and strength in the thumb/hand(s) varied within the group, hand function was generally described as good. Compensatory strategies were used to overcome practical obstacles. The emotional reactions to being visibly different from peers in early life varied from total acceptance and a sense of pride in being special, to deep distress and social withdrawal. Support from parents, teachers and others was important in facing emotional challenges and practical consequences. Conclusion: The present study highlights the importance of healthcare professionals addressing appearance-related concerns which may have long-term emotional and social consequences for patients born with a thumb anomaly. Implications for RehabilitationAppearance-related concerns and need for emotional support should be fully considered throughout the rehabilitation process to prevent distress and social withdrawal.Effective problem-solving strategies, such as compensation, change in occupational performance and support from others may reduce activity limitations and participation restriction.

    • The enormous progress of nanotechnology during the last decade has made it possible to fabricate a great variety of nanostructures. On the nanoscale, metals exhibit special electrical and optical properties, which can be utilized for novel applications. In particular, plasmonic sensors including both the established technique of surface plasmon resonance and more recent nanoplasmonic sensors, have recently attracted much attention. However, some of the simplest and most successful sensors, such as the glucose biosensor, are based on electrical readout. In this review we describe the implementation of electrochemistry with plasmonic nanostructures for combined electrical and optical signal transduction. We highlight results from different types of metallic nanostructures such as nanoparticles, nanowires, nanoholes or simply films of nanoscale thickness. We briefly give an overview of their optical properties and discuss implementation of electrochemical methods. In particular, we review studies on how electrochemical potentials influence the plasmon resonances in different nanostructures, as this type of fundamental understanding is necessary for successful combination of the methods. Although several combined platforms exist, many are not yet in use as sensors partly because of the complicated effects from electrochemical potentials on plasmon resonances. Yet, there are clearly promising aspects of these sensor combinations and we conclude this review by discussing the advantages of synchronized electrical and optical readout, illustrating the versatility of these technologies.

  • High-Resolution Microspectroscopy of Plasmonic Nanostructures for Miniaturized Biosensing

    • In this article, we demonstrate how to perform microscale spectroscopy of plasmonic nanostructures in order to minimize the noise when determining the resonance peak wavelength. This is accomplished using an experimental setup containing standard optical components mounted on an ordinary light microscope. We present a detailed comparison between extinction spectroscopy in transmission mode and scattering spectroscopy under dark field illumination, which shows that extinction measurements provide higher signal-to-noise in almost all situations. Furthermore, it is shown that rational selection of nanostructure, hardware components, and data analysis algorithms enables tracking of the particle plasmon resonance wavelength from a 10 mu m x 50 mu m area with a resolution of 10(-3) nm in transmission mode. We investigate how the temporal resolution, which can be improved down to 17 Ins, affects, the noise characteristics. In addition, we show how data can be acquired from an area as small as 2 mu m x 10 mu m (similar to 240 particles) at the expense of higher noise on longer time scales. In comparison with previous work on macroscopic sensor designs, this represents a sensor miniaturization of 5 orders of magnitude, without any loss in signal-to-noise performance. As a model system, we illustrate biomolecular detection using gold nanodisks prepared by colloidal lithography. The microextinction measurements of nanodisks described here provide detection of protein surface coverages as low as 40 pg/cm(2) (less than0.1% of saturated binding). In fact, the miniaturized system provides a detection limit in terms of surface coverage comparable to state of the art macroscopic sensors, while simultaneously being as close to single protein molecule detection as sensors based on a single nanoparticle.

  • Genetic Variants in the 9p21.3 Locus Associated with Glioma Risk in Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults : A Case-Control Study

    • Background: Genome-wide association studies have identified germline genetic variants in 25 genetic loci that increase the risk of developing glioma in adulthood. It is not known if these variants increase the risk of developing glioma in children and adolescents and young adults (AYA). To date, no studies have performed genome-wide analyses to find novel genetic variants associated with glioma risk in children and AYA.Methods: We investigated the association between 8,831,628 genetic variants and risk of glioma in 854 patients diagnosed up to the age of 29 years and 3,689 controls from Sweden and Denmark. Recruitment of patients and controls was population based. Genotyping was performed using Illumina BeadChips, and untyped variants were imputed with IMPUTE2. We selected 41 established adult glioma risk variants for detailed investigation.Results: Three adult glioma risk variants, rs634537, rs2157719, and rs145929329, all mapping to the 9p21.3 (CDKN2B-AS1) locus, were associated with glioma risk in children and AYA. The strongest association was seen for rs634537 (odds ratioG = 1.21; 95% confidence interval = 1.09–1.35; P = 5.8 × 10−4). In genome-wide analysis, an association with risk was suggested for 129 genetic variants (P <1 × 10−5).Conclusions: Carriers of risk alleles in the 9p21.3 locus have an increased risk of glioma throughout life. The results from genome-wide association analyses require validation in independent cohorts.Impact: Our findings line up with existing evidence that some, although not all, established adult glioma risk variants are associated with risk of glioma in children and AYA. Validation of results from genome-wide analyses may reveal novel susceptibility loci for glioma in children and AYA.

    • A microchip in poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) for in-line solid-phase extraction-capillary electrophoresis-electrospray ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SPE-CE-ESI-TOF-MS) has been developed and evaluated. The chip was fabricated in a novel one-step procedure where mixed PDMS was cast over steel wires in a mold. The removed wires defined 50-um cylindrical channels. Fused-silica capillaries were inserted into the structure in a tight fit connection. The inner walls of the inserted fused-silica capillaries and the PDMS microchip channels were modified with a positively charged polymer, PolyE-323. The chip was fabricated in a two-level cross design. The channel at the lower level was packed with 5-um hyper-cross-linked polystyrene beads acting as a SPE medium used for desalting. The upper level channel acted as a CE channel and ended in an integrated emitter tip coated with conducting graphite powder to facilitate the electrical contact for sheathless ESI. An overpressure continuously provided fresh CE electrolyte independently of the flows in the different levels. Further studies were carried out in order to investigate the electrophoretic and flow rate properties of the chip. Finally, six-peptide mixtures, in different concentrations, dissolved in physiological salt solution was injected, desalted, separated, and sprayed into the mass spectrometer for analysis with a limit of detection in femtomole levels.

  • Development of a health education programme for elderly with age-related macular degeneration: a focus group study.

    • Age-related macular degeneration is a serious public health problem, and in most cases no cure exists. One available intervention is low vision rehabilitation, and there is a lack of programmes for the elderly. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of an evaluation of a group-based health education programme. This programme comprised six to eight 2-3 hour meetings, once a week, for persons with age-related macular degeneration. Each group consisted of four to six participants. The goal of the programme, which has its roots in the health belief model, was to sustain and restore the participants' performance of their daily activities. The tool used for process evaluation was focus group methodology, and eight focus groups were involved. Forty five persons, whose average age was 80 years, took part in the evaluation. The results indicated that the participants were, on the whole, pleased with the content of the programme. There were, however, some indications that they did not understand all the information provided. Social support, regained hope and meeting others with the same disease were reported as positive aspects of the health education programme. The importance of the group leader's role in guiding this health education programme was emphasised. Furthermore, with regard to the composition of the groups, the participants pointed out that it was important to consider variation in visual acuity, so as to provide different models for comparison, and whether both sexes should participate in all groups. Finally, several suggestions for improving the programme are put forward.

    • BACKGROUND: End-to-side nerve repair is attachment of a single distal nerve segment (recipient nerve) end-to-side to an intact donor nerve when there is a lack of proximal nerve segment after injury. The technique is currently used clinically but the mechanism(s) behind this technique are essentially unknown. METHODS: We have studied end-to-side nerve repair in the forelimb of rats, where a single distal radial nerve or an ulnar or a median, or both, nerves are attached end-to-side to an intact musculocutaneous nerve. We have studied functional recovery, origin of the regenerating axons and cell activation by the end-to-side nerve repair. FINDINGS: Functional recovery occurs after end-to-side nerve repair but is less sufficient than conventional end-to-end nerve repair or a nerve graft procedure. Sensory and motor axons grow from the musculocutaneous nerve out into the attached nerve segment(s). An injury is required to the musculocutaneous nerve to activate sensory and motor neurons as well as Schwann cells in the musculocutaneous nerve for initiation of regeneration. CONCLUSIONS: End-to-side nerve repair may be an alternative method in specific cases of complex nerve injuries to reconstruct nerve trunks when no other repair options are possible. Some functional recovery does occur but regeneration of sensory and motor axons require an injury to the neurons of the donor nerve.

  • Maternal tobacco use and extremely premature birth - a population-based cohort study

    • Objective To study the associations of maternal tobacco use (smoking or use of snuff) and risk of extremely preterm birth, and if tobacco cessation before antenatal booking influences this risk. To study the association between tobacco use and spontaneous or medically indicated onset of delivery. Design Population-based cohort study. Setting Sweden. Population All live singleton births, registered in the Swedish Medical Birth Register, 1999-2012. Methods Odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using multiple logistic regression analysis. Main outcome measures Extremely preterm birth (<28 weeks of gestation), very preterm birth (28-31 weeks), moderately preterm birth (32-36 weeks). Results Maternal snuff use (OR 1.58; 95% CI: 1.14-2.21) and smoking (OR 1.61; 95% CI: 1.39-1.87 and OR 1.91; 95% CI: 1.53-2.39 for moderate and heavy smoking, respectively) were associated with an increased risk of extremely preterm birth. When cessation of tobacco use was obtained there was no increased risk of preterm birth. Snuff use was associated with a twofold risk increase of medically indicated extremely preterm birth, whereas smoking was associated with increased risks of both medically indicated and spontaneous extremely preterm birth. Conclusions Snuff use and smoking in pregnancy were associated with increased risks of extremely preterm birth. Women who stopped using tobacco before the antenatal booking had no increased risk. These findings indicate that nicotine, the common substance in cigarettes and snuff, is involved in the mechanisms behind preterm birth. The use of nicotine should be minimized in pregnancy.

    • A controlled experiment was carried out by doing geophysical measurements on a purpose-built heap consisting of two different industrial waste fractions, called NF ( non-ferrous metal) and SLF (shredder light fraction), from the recycling plant of Stena Metall in Halmstad, Sweden. The purpose of the experiment was to see if it was possible to distinguish the different types of material using geophysics. Resistivity-IP, magnetics and slingram were measured over the test heap. The results gave distinctly different signatures for the different materials. In conclusion the test shows a large potential for the tested methods for material characterisation of buried waste in connection with landfill mining.

    • Exogenous granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) has emerged as a drug candidate for improving the outcome after peripheral nerve injuries. We raised the question if exogenous G-CSF can improve nerve regeneration following a clinically relevant model - nerve transection and repair - in healthy and diabetic rats. In short-term experiments, distance of axonal regeneration and extent of injury-induced Schwann cell death was quantified by staining for neurofilaments and cleaved caspase 3, respectively, seven days after repair. There was no difference in axonal outgrowth between G-CSF-treated and non-treated rats, regardless if healthy Wistar or diabetic Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rats were examined. However, G-CSF treatment caused a significant 13% decrease of cleaved caspase 3-positive Schwann cells at the lesion site in healthy rats, but only a trend in diabetic rats. In the distal nerve segments of healthy rats a similar trend was observed. In long-term experiments of healthy rats, regeneration outcome was evaluated at 90days after repair by presence of neurofilaments, wet weight of gastrocnemius muscle, and perception of touch (von Frey monofilament testing weekly). The presence of neurofilaments distal to the suture line was similar in G-CSF-treated and non-treated rats. The weight ratio of ipsi-over contralateral gastrocnemius muscles, and perception of touch at any time point, were likewise not affected by G-CSF treatment. In addition, the inflammatory response in short- and long-term experiments was studied by analyzing ED1 stainable macrophages in healthy rats, but in neither case was any attenuation seen at the injury site or distal to it. G-CSF can prevent caspase 3 activation in Schwann cells in the short-term, but does not detectably affect the inflammatory response, nor improve early or late axonal outgrowth or functional recovery.

The narratives were analyzed using an inductive approach and content-analysis.Results The analysis revealed seven main categories: "Physical symptoms/impairments" and "Mood and emotions"comprise symptoms caused by ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow and chronic pain; "Consequences in daily life" includes challenges and obstacles in every-day life, impact on leisure activities and social life; "Struggling with self-image" embraces experiences closely related to identity; "Coping strategies" covers adaptive resources; "Experience of relief "describes perceived improvements; "Key message for future care" comprises important aspects for healthcare providers to consider.Conclusions The results clarify the need for healthcare personnel to adopt a biopsychosocial approach when treating patients with ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow. Emotional symptoms and sleep disturbances should be identified and treated properly since they contribute to the heavy burden experienced by the individual.

    • Purpose: To examine independence in activities of daily living (ADL) at the 1- and 2-year followups of the health-promoting study Elderly Persons in the Risk Zone. Design and Method: A randomized, three-armed, single-blind, and controlled study. A representative sample of 459 independent and community-dwelling older adults, 80 years and older, were included. A preventive home visit was compared with four weekly multiprofessional senior group meetings including a follow-up home visit. Results: Analysis showed a significant difference in favor of the senior meetings in postponing dependence in ADL at the 1-year follow-up (odds ratio [OR] = 1.92, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.19-3.10) and also in reducing dependence in three (OR = 0.52, 95% CI = 0.31-0.86) and four or more ADL (OR = 0.40, 95% CI = 0.22-0.72) at the 2-year follow-up. A preventive home visit reduced dependence in two (OR = 0.40, 95% CI = 0.24-0.68) and three or more ADL (OR = 0.37, 95% CI = 0.17-0.80) after 1 year. Implications: A long-term evaluation of Elderly Persons in the Risk Zone showed that both senior meetings and a preventive home visit reduced the extent of dependence in ADL after 1 year. The senior meetings were superior to a preventive home visit since additional significant effects were seen after 2 years. To further enhance the long-term effects of the senior meetings and support the process of self-change in health behavior, it is suggested that booster sessions might be a good way of reinforcing the intervention.

    • The Tubed Mega Frame is a new structure concept for high-rise buildings which is developed by Tyréns in Sweden. The Tubed Mega Frame consists of large hollow vertical shafts, mega columns, and perimeter walls. In a series of in-depth structural studies, the global response of the system as well as the detailed design of the mega columns and the perimeter walls have been investigated. The studies have been performed on an 800 m high prototype building. Parallel to these studies, the feasibility of the construction process has been the objective in another investigation. The chosen structural material for the Tubed Mega Frame is reinforced high-strength concrete. The conclusions from the studies show that the Tubed Mega Frame is a potentially feasible structural system with high-efficiency for high-rise buildings.

    • The mechanisms influencing regeneration of peripheral nerves are incompletely known, but growth factors are supposed to play a key role. In the present study, we demonstrate, with the aid of immunohistochemical methods, that somatomedin C (Sm-C/insulin-like growth factor I/IGF-I) rapidly increased from low to high concentrations, reaching peak values in 2 weeks, in regenerating sciatic nerves of adult rats. In addition, IGF-I was demonstrated extracellularly, never observed in the control nerves. Reactive Schwann cells appeared to be the major source for IGF-synthesis. Higher concentrations were seen in tubulated nerves as compared to sutured ones. It is proposed that IGF-I exerts important growth supporting effects on regenerating peripheral nerves.

    • The application of geophysics may assist in solving environmental, geotechnical and exploration problems. One commonly used method in such applications is electrical resistivity tomography (ERT). In order to interpret the results, inversion is needed to create models estimating distribution of resistivity in the ground. Several inversion programs are available for geophysicists to use. It is therefore important to investigate if different software's give similar results for a given data set. In this paper, three different inversion software's have been compared through inversion of the forward response of the same synthetic model. The programs used are Res2Dinv, Aarhusinv and BERT. Two synthetic forward models have been used. As expected, Res2Dinv generally tends to exaggerate structures vertically and Aarhusinv to exaggerate them vertically. BERT seems to be somewhere in between, but does not seem to resolve sharp features in the synthetic forward model, resulting in rounded anomalies. A square-like feature close to the ground surface in the forward model was well resolved by all inversion software. However, it was not possible to resolve inclined blocks in any of the inversions. Possible explanations might be poor data coverage at deeper depths in the model and model discretization that cannot resolve inclined geometries.

    • Background: As Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) becomes a part of the clinical practice, the interest for alternative ways of providing it continue to grow. Internet-based CBT, both guided and unguided, has proved to be effective for the treatment of a wide range of psychiatric disorders, including anxiety disorders. Moreover, the tremendous accessibility of smartphones makes them a potentially powerful instrument for providing psychological treatment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of an Internet-based ACT-program for social anxiety disorder and panic disorder using both computers and smartphones, and with and without therapist support. Method: The participants were recruited from the general public by filling out an online screening form, which consisted of LSAS, PDSS-SR, GAD-7, PHQ-9, QOLI (the scales later served as outcome measures) and demographic questions. The individuals who met the inclusion criteria were contacted for a diagnostic telephone interview. The 152 people chosen for participation were then randomized into two treatment groups (guided and unguided) and a waiting list control group. The participants in the treatment groups were given access to an Internet-provided ACT-based treatment program consisting of 8 modules, as well as a smartphone application with content that corresponded to the Internet treatment program. Additionally, the participants in the guided group received minimum therapist support (15 min/week) through the smartphone application from psychology students undergoing their clinical training. The participants worked with the program for 10 weeks. They were evaluated twice during treatment, once after completing treatment, and once again 12-months later as a follow-up measure. A mixed effect model was used to analyze the data. Results: Regardless of diagnosis, as a whole the treated groups showed significant decreases in anxiety, with a moderate within-group effect size. This improvement appeared to be maintained when the groups were evaluated again during the follow-up. The participants suffering primarily from social anxiety disorder showed significant improvements, with moderate within-group effect sizes in both the guided (Cohen's d = 0.79) and unguided group (Cohen's d = 0.71). This improvement also appeared to be maintained when these participants were evaluated during the follow-up. No significant changes were observed in the symptoms of the participants suffering primarily from panic disorder. Discussion: Internet-delivered ACT-based treatment provided via both computer and smartphone can be effective for reducing general anxiety symptoms, as well as social anxiety symptoms. The guided treatment was not clearly superior to the unguided treatment. Some of the study’s uncertainties are likely due to the presence of a large number of different components, which made it difficult to isolate the effects of each individual component.

Material and methods Two systematic reviews (SR) were performed prior to the consensus meeting to assess the following questions. Review 1, focused question: In systemically healthy patients with an implant-supported fixed prosthesis, what is the influence of thin as compared to thick peri-implant mucosa on esthetic outcomes? Review 2, focused question 1: In systemically healthy humans with at least one dental implant (immediate or staged implant), what is the efficacy of connective tissue graft (CTG), as compared to absence of a soft tissue grafting procedure, in terms of gain in peri-implant soft tissue thickness (STT) reported by randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) or controlled clinical trials (CCTs)? Review 2, focused question 2: In systemically healthy humans with at least one dental implant (immediate or staged implant), what is the efficacy of CTG, as compared to soft tissue substitutes, in terms of gain in peri-implant STT reported by RCTs or CCTs? The outcomes of the two SRs, the consensus statements, the clinical implications, and the research recommendations were discussed and subsequently approved at the consensus meeting during the group and plenary sessions. Conclusions There was a tendency of superior esthetic outcomes in the presence of a thick mucosa. The connective tissue graft remains the standard of care in terms of increasing mucosa thickness.

    • Plant traits-the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants-determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait-based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits-almost complete coverage for 'plant growth form'. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait-environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives.

    • In this study the capacity of towed floating electrical imaging for mapping a known aquifer recharge zone in more detail is investigated. A 50 km reach of the Namoi River, Australia, was surveyed. The river is perched up to 16 m above an unconfined aquifer that extends to 30 m below the ground surface. The unconfined aquifer overlies a semi-confined aquifer system. The electrical array consists of two current electrodes near the boat, followed by nine potential electrodes. The sequence of 1D electrical sounding curves generated was automatically inverted to obtain a layered earth electrical model along the river to a depth of approximately 40 m. There was weak correlation between the water conductivity measured in boreholes and the layered earth electrical model. Lithological logs from boreholes near the river indicate that the major layers seen in the electrical conductivity cross-section correspond to the major sedimentary units. Groundwater mounding in the vicinity of the river has been monitored after flooding. The groundwater flood mounds coincide with the location of the predominantly low electrically conductive sediments mapped beneath the river. This suggests that aquifer recharging waters migrate via the sands and gravels, then pool at the water table before dissipating. This survey demonstrates that mapping intervals of low electrically conductive sediments beneath the river maps potential aquifer recharge pathways.

    • This non-interventional post-authorisation safety study (PASS) assessed the long-term safety of everolimus in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) who participated in the TuberOus SClerosis registry to increase disease Awareness (TOSCA) clinical study and received everolimus for the licensed indications in the European Union. The rate of adverse events (AEs), AEs that led to dose adjustments or treatment discontinuation, AEs of potential clinical interest, treatment-related AEs (TRAEs), serious AEs (SAEs), and deaths were documented. One hundred seventy-nine patients were included in the first 5 years of observation; 118 of 179 patients had an AE of any grade, with the most common AEs being stomatitis (7.8%) and headache (7.3%). AEs caused dose adjustments in 56 patients (31.3%) and treatment discontinuation in nine patients (5%). AEs appeared to be more frequent and severe in children. On Tanner staging, all patients displayed signs of age-appropriate sexual maturation. Twenty-two of 106 female (20.8%) patients had menstrual cycle disorders. The most frequent TRAEs were stomatitis (6.7%) and aphthous mouth ulcer (5.6%). SAEs were reported in 54 patients (30.2%); the most frequent SAE was pneumonia (&gt;3% patients; grade 2, 1.1%, and grade 3, 2.8%). Three deaths were reported, all in patients who had discontinued everolimus for more than 28 days, and none were thought to be related to everolimus according to the treating physicians. The PASS sub-study reflects the safety and tolerability of everolimus in the management of TSC in real-world routine clinical practice.

    • The Journal of Management Studies, founded in 1963, is celebrating its 60th year. Clark et al. (2014) conducted a bibliometric analysis for its 50th anniversary assessing whether the journal had maintained its leading international ranking and sustained its mission to serve as a broad-based management outlet. In this review, we build on and extend their findings by examining trends in the journal over the past decade (2012–22). We present a broader analysis of JMS by exploring its unique identity within the management journal ecosystem and examining its scope and breadth in terms of topics, methods, and author demographics to document JMS's evolution, impact, reach, and accessibility. We develop a new bibliometric framework that employs a mix of qualitative and quantitative analyses (including regression, text, and language analysis) to cover a broad range of considerations for a journal and its stakeholders. In so doing, we contribute to the bibliometric and review research areas by proposing new metrics (related to diversity, equity, and inclusion) and analysis tools to assess the relative position of an academic journal. Employing this framework, we conclude that JMS has retained and enhanced its position as a leading, cutting-edge general management journal.
