  • School-based study found that physical activity and aerobic fitness predicted increases in total body fat and abdominal fat at a mean age of 9.8 years.
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Acta Pædiatrica. - : Wiley. - 1651-2227 .- 0803-5253. ; 107:10, s. 1810-1817
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: We assessed whether baseline measurements of physical activity, aerobic fitness, body fat and abdominal fat were predictors of changes in body fat measurements over a two-year period.METHODS: The study comprised of 204 children aged 9.8 ± 0.6 years with a normal body mass distribution, who recruited from four schools in middle-class areas of Malmö, Sweden, from 2001 to 2004. Peak oxygen uptake and physical activity were measured at baseline. Body fat was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at baseline and two years later.RESULTS: Physical activity, aerobic fitness and total body fat or abdominal fat were predictors of change in total body fat or abdominal fat over a period of two years. Changes in the percentage of body fat were not related to any of the baseline measurements.CONCLUSION: Our two-year follow-up of children with a mean age of 9.8 years at baseline showed that physical activity, aerobic fitness and body fat or abdominal fat predicted changes in total body fat or abdominal fat, but not the percentage of body fat.

  • Total body fat, abdominal fat, body fat distribution and surrogate markers for health related to adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (FABP4) in children
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0334-018X .- 2191-0251. ; 30:4, s. 375-382
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to assess possible relationships between adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (FABP4) and total body fat (TBF), abdominal fat, body fat distribution, aerobic fitness, blood pressure, cardiac dimensions and the increase in body fat over 2 years in a community sample of children. A cross-sectional study was used in a community sample of 170 (92 boys and 78 girls) children aged 8-11 years. TBF and abdominal fat (AFM) were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). TBF was also expressed as percentage of total body mass (BF%), and body fat distribution was calculated as AFM/TBF. Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2PEAK) was assessed by indirect calorimetry during a maximal exercise test and scaled to body mass. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) and pulse pressure (PP) were measured. Echocardiography was performed. Left atrial (LA) size was measured, and left ventricular mass (LVM) was calculated. A follow-up DXA scan was available in 152 children (84 boys and 68 girls). Frozen serum samples were analyzed for FABP4. Partial correlations, with adjustment for sex, between FABP4 vs. ln TBF, ln BF%, ln AFM, AFM/TBF and VO2PEAK were (r=0.69, 0.68, 0.69, 0.49 and -0.39, p<0.05 for all). Moreover, SBP, PP, LVM and LA were also weakly correlated with FABP4 (r=0.23, 0.22, 0.28 and 0.21, p<0.05 for all). Correlations between FABP4 vs. increase in TBF and AFM over 2 years were 0.29 and 0.26, p<0.05, for both. (Increase in percent body fat or change in fat distribution were not correlated.) Findings from this community-based cohort of young children show that increased body fat and abdominal fat, more abdominal body fat distribution, low fitness, more LVM and increased LA, increased SBP and PP were all associated with increased levels of FABP4. Increase in TBF and abdominal fat over 2 years were also associated with increased levels of FABP4.

  • Transcriptional regulation of aquaporins in accessions of Arabidopsis in response to drought stress.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Plant Journal. - 1365-313X. ; 61, s. 650-660
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Summary Aquaporins facilitate water transport over cellular membranes and are therefore believed to play an important role in water homeostasis. In higher plants aquaporin-like proteins, also called major intrinsic proteins (MIPs), are divided into 5 subfamilies. We have previously shown that MIP transcription in Arabidopsis thaliana generally is down-regulated in leaves upon drought stress, apart from two members of the Plasma membrane Intrinsic Protein (PIP) subfamily, AtPIP1;4 and AtPIP2;5, which are up-regulated. In order to assess if this regulation is general or accession-specific we monitored gene expression of all PIPs in five Arabidopsis accessions. Overall drought regulation of PIPs was well conserved for all five accessions tested suggesting a general and fundamental physiological role of this drought response. In addition, significant differences among accessions were identified for transcripts of three PIP genes. Principal component analysis showed that most of the PIP transcriptional variation during drought stress could be explained by one variable linked to leaf water content. Promoter-GUS constructs of AtPIP1;4, AtPIP2;5 and also AtPIP2;6, which is unresponsive to drought stress, had distinct expression patterns concentrated to the base of the leaf petioles and parts of the flowers. The presence of drought stress response elements within the 1.6 kb promoter regions of AtPIP1;4 and AtPIP2;5, was demonstrated by comparing transcription of the promoter reporter construct and the endogenous gene upon drought stress. Analysis by ATTED-II and other web-based bioinformatical tools showed that several of the MIPs down-regulated upon drought are strongly co-expressed, whereas AtPIP1;4, AtPIP2;5 and AtPIP2;6 are not co-expressed.

  • THORACIC SPINE IMAGING: A COMPARISON BETWEEN RADIOGRAPHY AND TOMOSYNTHESIS USING VISUAL GRADING CHARACTERISTICS
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Radiation protection dosimetry. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1742-3406 .- 0144-8420. ; 169:1-4, s. 204-210
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present study was to evaluate digital tomosynthesis (DTS) in thoracic spine imaging, comparing the reproduction of anatomical structures with that achieved using digital radiography (DR). In a prospective visual grading study, 23 patients referred in 2014 for elective radiographic examination of the thoracic spine were examined using lateral DR and DTS. The DR image and the DTS section images were read in random order by four radiologists, evaluating the ability of the modalities to present a clear reproduction of nine specific relevant structures of the thoracic vertebrae 3, 6 and 9 (T3, T6 and T9). The data were analysed using visual grading characteristics (VGC) analysis. The VGC analysis revealed a statistically significant difference in favour of DTS for all evaluated structures, except for the anterior vertebral edges and lower end plate surfaces of T6 and T9 and the cancellous bone of T9. The difference was most striking in T3 and for posterior structures. For no structure in any vertebra was the reproduction rated significantly better for DR. In conclusion, DTS of the thoracic spine appears to be a promising alternative to DR, especially in areas where the problem of overlaying anatomy is accentuated, such as posterior and upper thoracic structures.

  • Thoracic spine imaging: A comparison between radiography and tomosynthesis using visual grading characteristics
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Optimisation in X-ray and Molecular Imaging 2015 - the Fourth Malmö Conference on Medical Imaging, Gothenburg, Sweden, 28-30 May 2015.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: Conventional radiography (CR) is the most-often used modality in imaging of the thoracic spine, as primary examination as well as follow-up of known pathology. However, the ability of radiography to clearly depict thoracic vertebrae is limited, mostly due to overlying structures. Digital tomosynthesis (DTS) has in other parts of the body – most notably in chest imaging – been shown to increase conspicuity of relevant pathology where overlying structures is an issue. DTS has not yet been evaluated as an imaging modality of the thoracic spine. Purpose: To compare the ability of CR and DTS to depict relevant structures of the thoracic vertebrae. Materials and Methods: In this prospective visual grading study, 23 patients referred in 2014 for elective radiographic examination of the thoracic spine were examined using CR and DTS in the sagittal plane. The lateral projections of the CR and DTS images were read in random order by four radiologists evaluating the ability of the modalities to present a clear reproduction of nine specific relevant structures of vertebrae T3, T6 and T9. The data were analyzed using Visual Grading Characteristics (VGC) analysis. Results: In terms of clear reproduction, VGC analysis revealed that there was a statistically significant difference (p<0.05) between CR and DTS in favor of the latter, for all evaluated structures apart from the anterior vertebral edges and lower end plates of T6 and T9. The differences were most striking in T3. No structures were evaluated as being more clearly reproduced by CR. Conclusion: The study indicates that most vertebral structures of the thoracic spine are perceived as more clearly reproduced by DTS than by CR, suggesting that detection of pathology would be improved by the use of DTS.

  • Analysis of Communication Network Challenges for Synchrophasor-Based Wide-Area Applications
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of IREP Symposium. - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781479901999
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wide-area synchrophasor applications inherently depend on the underlying IT and communications infrastructure supporting them. In particular, closed loop control systems for power grid oscillation damping is problematic, as it is a complex mixture of power grid monitoring, communication network properties and overall system stability issues. This article offers a holistic analysis of these fields, proposing a combined requirement on the full system: to keep system delays down to maintain stability. Simulation results to support the analysis findings, also showing how observability of power oscillations is important in combination with system delays related to feedback signals, and finally laying out experimentation plans to be performed in the lab on a complex power-grid model with real PMUs, communication network and controllers interacting with the SmarTS Lab real-time hardware-in-the-loop simulator platform.

  • Crafting Deviance : Moral Construction as Narrative Strategy in Investigative TV-journalism
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Media and Communication (Mediji i Komunikacije). - Bijelo Polje, Crna Gora (Montenegro). - 2336-9981 .- 2337-0262. ; 5:9, s. 33-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Journalism researchers have argued that one of the ways in which investigative journalism engages audiences is the construction of a moral point of departure and a subsequent indicating of shocking deviance from that morality (Ekström, 2002; Protess et al., 1991; Mølster, 2007; Ettema och Glasser, 1998; de Burgh, 2008).By means of a set of Labov’s (1972) narrative concepts and the objectification of standards described by Ettema and Glasser (1998), this article shows and analyses how moral deviance is gradually constructed and expanded upon in an episode of the Swedish investigative TV programme Uppdrag granskning [Mission Investigate].Based on the analysis the article argues that journalistic constructions of aggravation of moral transgressions have implications in three areas: increased attention value of the own production, justification of the shaming and exposure of featured wrongdoers and establishment of journalism as a purveyor of moral constructions influencing social order.

  • Disclaiming, Mitigating, and Character Boosting : How Targets of Investigate Journalism Negotiate Guilt, Excuses, Justification, and Morality
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journalism Studies. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1461-670X .- 1469-9699. ; 24:4, s. 532-551
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyses how objects of investigative journalism challenge journalistic authority and knowledge production from the textual space of their own platforms. Drawing on theories of image repair discourse, legal defense strategies, and socio-moral meaning making, a thematic analysis is used to research how the defenses criticize the investigations, what type of dialogical socio-moral meaning making they initiate, and what challenges that meaning-making poses to journalism. The article identifies three positions vis-à-vis the accusations: disclaiming, mitigating, and character boosting. The positions represent journalism respectively as either malevolent adversary, legitimate censor, or associate moral champion, and the stances criticize investigations for being either wrongful, exaggerated, or a distortion of character. The defenses challenge investigative journalism to substantiate accusations, justify methods, renegotiate guilt, acknowledge the validity of excuses and justification, and give credit for alleged moral qualities. The study ends with a discussion on the importance for journalism to engage seriously with defenses to uphold its role as a just and fair institution of accountability, and as a relevant actor in the construction of societal moral.

  • From investigative to critical local journalism : A quantitative content analysis of critical reporting in local Swedish newspapers with a new analytical focus
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journalistica. - 1901-6220 .- 1904-7967. ; 17:1, s. 1-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Journalism is considered to fulfil a societal watchdog role. However, research indicates that local news rarely lives up to established state-of-the-art definitions of investigative journalism. Therefore, this article argues that the assessment of local accountability journalism must include research on the extent to which it assumes a societal watchdog role in a more basic sense, namely by being critical of events and conditions in the local society in some way. A content analysis of approximately 1600 articles in three local Swedish newspapers shows that criticism, even in its mildest form, constitutes less than a fifth of the overall output, and that journalists themselves are the agents of criticism in less than 15 % of the critical articles, disregarding editorials, and that they more often criticize national than local power. In news articles, journalists are less often agents of criticism than both politicians, the public, and representatives of organizations. Actors in the public sphere are targets of criticism in 75 % of the critical articles, whereas those articles rarely target the private sector or civil society.

  • Politicians as entertainers : a political performance of the personal
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Continuum. Journal of Media and Cultural Studies. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1030-4312 .- 1469-3666. ; 34:5, s. 733-748
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Appearances on entertainment television constitute opportunities for politicians, not only to convey political messages, but also to perform personality. Most research has focused on the interview setting as the locus of such performances. But in addition to being interviewed, politicians occasionally turn entertainers themselves, dancing, singing, playing instruments or doing comedy. This article analyses such performances as a specific communicative practice that plays a part in the construction of public persona. The analysis is theory driven and based upon the concepts of personalization of politics, performativity and the carnivalesque. Our conclusion is that such performances have the potential to communicate emotive sociality, accentuate celebrity status, construct ordinariness and work as a pre-emptive inoculation against satire and ridicule. There is, however, also a risk to appear undignified and scrupulously populist involved, since the performances negotiate borders of political decency.

  • Researching Emotional Experiences as Discursive Elements : A Suggested Qualitative Method
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: The Qualitative Report. - 2160-3715. ; 29:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As scholars in the fields of political science, media research, and social psychology endeavor to understand crucial aspects of emotionality in the media, there is a growing need to methodologically address the communicative and discursive aspects of affective constructions in media texts. This article argues that by breaking down mediated emotional experiences represented through language in a set of identifiable elements, such as subject, emotion type, valence, intensity, proposed action, and object, those experiences could be used as workable and potent units of analysis when studying discursive and ideological media constructs of emotionality. By connecting insights from emotion science, the sociology of emotions, and media sociology, the qualitative method outlined, Emotional Experience Profiling (EEP), provides a flexible research tool conducive to an understanding of how emotional experiences represented through language in media texts are constructed and how they shape political discourse, identity, and emotional cultures. To demonstrate and illustrate the application of the method, the article provides examples from a pilot study which explores the research question: How do emotional experiences featured in Swedish far-right alternative news media construct and articulate political discourse?

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nordicom Review. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 1403-1108 .- 2001-5119. ; 34, s. 61-74
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper considers the performativity of shaming in investigative TV-journalism. Itargues that the construction of shame is not only a constituent element in investigative TVjournalismbut also an important factor in pursuing some of its main objectives: establishingmorals, exercising social control, reinforcing journalistic identity and ideology, and competingfor attention in a diversified media theatre where drama, entertainment and emotionalthrills are the hard currency. An empirical study of the Swedish TV programme Uppdraggranskning, is used to inductively propose three categories of shaming and to give someexamples of the ways in which shaming is performed. The core of the paper is a theorydriven analysis in which the performativity of shaming in investigative TV-journalism isanalysed in the light of some converging media and societal trends.

  • When Saga Norén meets neurotypicality : A liminal encounter along The Bridge
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Normalizing Mental Illness and Neurodiversity in Entertainment Media. - London & New York : Taylor & Francis. - 9781003011668 ; , s. 96-109
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the Swedish/Danish co-produced TV series Bron (The Bridge), Saga Norén, a Swedish policewoman, must work with a Danish policeman to solve a murder that took place on the bridge between the two countries. Norén demonstrates a social awkwardness that is seemingly located somewhere on the autism spectrum. She has difficulty understanding social codes and cannot read others’ feelings well. Furthermore, she also depends heavily on routines. The character’s social obliviousness creates comic relief in a way that does not demean Norén but in some cases reveals the futility or counterproductivity of social conventions. The authors conduct a qualitative content analysis of the series humorous scenes to analyze how Norén’s interactions with other characters creates a liminal space between neurotypicality and neurodiversity where notions of identity, power and acceptance are negotiated. According to the authors, laughing at Saga helps the audience understand the peculiarities and assets of neurodivergence, and gives them a deeper appreciation of the possibilities and challenges that appear in the spaces in/between neurodiversity and neurotypical society. As such, The Bridge suggests the need for further investigations into the liminal space of mutual awareness and adaption, and for mutual appreciation of the power of the collaboration of diversity.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of International Communication. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1321-6597 .- 2158-3471. ; 25:2, s. 254-274
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Communication for and about development are significant components of international development cooperation, interlinked in practice though separated in research. This article examines their interaction in donor-driven aid through the lens of journalism. How is bilateral development cooperation communicated about in the news? How does a donor agency communicate for and about development? And what are the links between one and the other? In 2016, a prime-time exposé aired by the Swedish public TV reported on alleged corruption in aid to Zambia, depicting events as the double failure of donor and recipient. Our analysis clarifies how (a) how the news media in a top donor country covers public development aid for its citizen audiences; and (b) how a bilateral donor agency understands and practices communication as it interacts with the news media on the one hand, and with partners and beneficiaries on the ground on the other. We focus on the news media as mediator of the donor’s communication with its tax-paying citizen audiences, demonstrating the potential of an integrated conceptual approach to communication for and about development, and raising questions for future research.

  • Cultural Heritage : Changing Ideas on Compensation in Planning
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Compensation measures are a new method for handling impact on cultural heritage in land use planning. The idea with compensation measures can be understood as an extension of the polluter pays principle. Today, compensation measures are mainly used when natural environments are damaged by development, but it is also possible to use compensation measures when a project results in negative impact on cultural heritage. However, there is a lack of experience in using compensation when it comes to the latter. In our work as heritage consultants, we have experienced difficulties in implementing compensa-tion measures in projects and assignments. Since 2013, we have organised a research project dealing with compensation measures and cultural heritage; aiming towards a new practice and better use of planning instruments. With this paper, we want to share our results from four case studies where development impact on cultural heritage has led to discussions about, and imple-mentation of, compensation measures. By using case studies from four different types of development, we wanted to find patterns in the use of compensation measures in planning processes. The results show an uncertainty in understanding compensation as a concept. This is due to an absence of practice dealing with compensation measures; cultural heritage values are not addressed in a proper way in negotia-tions over land access. Several instruments for compensation measures in planning processes can actually be found in the law and land use of the Swedish planning system, but they are not being used properly, which results in a negative impact on the cultural heritage. After two years of analysing and discussing our case studies in workshops and conferences, we have concluded that there is a strong need for clarifying planning instruments and for developing a professional practice dealing with compensa-tion measures.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sensitive detection of protein interactions and post-translational modifications of native proteins is a challenge for research and diagnostic purposes. A method for this, which could be used in point-of-care devices and high-throughput screening, should be reliable, cost effective and robust. To achieve this, here we design a method (proxHCR) that combines the need for proximal binding with hybridization chain reaction (HCR) for signal amplification. When two oligonucleotide hairpins conjugated to antibodies bind in close proximity, they can be activated to reveal an initiator sequence. This starts a chain reaction of hybridization events between a pair of fluorophore-labelled oligonucleotide hairpins, generating a fluorescent product. In conclusion, we show the applicability of the proxHCR method for the detection of protein interactions and posttranslational modifications in microscopy and flow cytometry. As no enzymes are needed, proxHCR may be an inexpensive and robust alternative to proximity ligation assays.

  • 2009

  • Cultural Heritage: Changing Ideas on Compensation in Planning
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Architectural Research in Finland. - Helsinki. - 2489-6799. ; 1:1, s. 75-92
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Compensation measures are a new method for handling impact on cultural heritage in land use planning. The idea with compensation measures can be understood as an extension of the polluter pays principle. Today, compensation measures are mainly used when natural environments are damaged by development, but it is also possible to use compensation measures when a project results in negative impact on cultural heritage. However, there is a lack of experience in using compensation when it comes to the latter. In our work as heritage consultants, we have experienced difficulties in implementing compensation measures in projects and assignments. Since 2013, we have organised a research project dealing with compensation measures and cultural heritage; aiming towards a new practice and better use of planning instruments. With this paper, we want to share our results from four case studies where development impact on cultural heritage has led to discussions about, and implementation of, compensation measures, find patterns in the use of compensation measures in planning processes. The results show an uncertainty in understanding compensation as a concept. This is due to an absence of practice dealing with compensation measures; cultural heritage values are not addressed in a proper way in negotiations over land access.Several instruments for compensation measures in planning processes can actually be found in the law and land use of the Swedish planning system, but they are not being used properly, which results in a negative impact on the cultural heritage. After two years of analysing and discussing our case studies in workshops and conferences, we have concluded that there is a strong need for clarifying planning instruments and for developing a professional practice dealing with compensation measures.

  • Cultural heritage compensation: Approaches to transformation of sites with cultural values and architectural qualities
  • 2020
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This proceeding is the last part of a research project investigating how compensation is expressed in designing detailed development plans in areas with heritage values and architectural qualities. The overall objective of the research project has been to produce new knowledge about heritage compensation as a concept, method and tool in planning processes. The researh project have been granted funding from the Swedish National Heritage Board’s R&D. The proceeding presents the third part of the project – the international workshop – called Architecture, cultural environment and compensation in planning processes. The workshop took place at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, 16-17 September 2019, and was organized as a joint venture between Kulturlandskapet (a cooperative heritage consultancy) and Building Design, Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology. The theme in the invitation was summarized in the following way: On compensation as a concept, method and professional practice by architects, architectural conservators and archaeologists in planning processes. Ten scholars from contribute to the proceeding: Tom Davies,  Athanasios Kouzelis, Mathilde Kirkegaard, Anders Larsson, Urban Nilsson, David Ross, Magnus Rönn, Jennie Sjöholm and Helena Teräväinen.
