  • Becoming an Ironman triathlete : Extreme exercise, gender equality and the family puzzle
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Sport in Society. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1743-0437 .- 1743-0445. ; 21:9, s. 1351-1363
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Departing from a qualitative research approach, this article focuses on Swedish amateur Ironman triathletes and their family life. The purpose of the paper is to investigate how an elite amateur lifestyle is upheld and balanced with the demands of a sustainable family and social life. The results indicate that the process of becoming and staying an Ironman creates tensions in intimate relationships, making it hard to bring the family life puzzle together. Although the participants interviewed often talk about family life in terms of sharing things fairly equally, in terms of gender equity and involved parenthood, this seemingly is not always an easy ideal to fulfil in practice. On a broader cultural level, these findings can thus be contextualized in relation to discourses associated with the gendering of families and functions, and, of course, the gender of sport and performance.

  • Transcript profiling of oilseed rape (Brassica napus) primed for biocontrol differentiate genes involved in microbial interactions with beneficial Bacillus amyloliquefaciens from pathogenic Botrytis cinerea
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Plant Molecular Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0167-4412 .- 1573-5028. ; 70, s. 31-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many microorganisms interact with plants but information is insufficient concerning requirements for plant colonization and if interactions become beneficial or detrimental. Pretreatment of oilseed rape (Brassica napus) with Bacillus results in disease suppression upon challenge with pathogens. We have studied transcriptome effects on oilseed rape primed with the Bacillus amyloliquefaciens 5113 biocontrol strain and compared that with effects of the fungal pathogen Botrytis cinerea. Using the cDNA-AFLP technique 21,700 transcript fragments were obtained of which 120 were differentially expressed and verified by northern blot analysis for selected transcripts. Priming with Bacillus caused greater effect on leaf than root transcripts where sequencing and BLAST analysis suggested many of the transcripts to be involved in metabolism and bioenergy. Bacillus and Botrytis treatment also changed metabolic gene expression in addition to signaling and transcription control genes as well as a potential disease resistance (TIR-NBS-LRR) gene. The pathogen provoked non-primed plant profile was less dominated by metabolism than Bacillus and Bacillus-Botrytis treated plants. Several transcripts were homologues to unknown genes in the different treatments. Altogether Bacillus treatment of roots cause a systemic gene expression in leaves suggested to result in a metabolic reprogramming as a major event during priming.

  • Oral lichen planus : studies of factors involved in differentiation, epithelial mesenchymal transition and inflammation
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: Lichen planus is a chronic inflammation of skin and mucosa with unknown cause. Oral Lichen Planus, OLP, affects around 2% of the population. Autoimmunity has been suggested as a possible cause as the disease has autoimmune features such as female predominance, cyclic nature and cytotoxic T-cell infiltrate. It has been suggested that the intense inflammatory response seen in OLP is caused by factors on the keratinocyte surface triggering the immune system. Chronic inflammation is one of the hallmarks of oral lichen planus and chronic inflammation is connected to increased risk of tumor development. WHO classifies OLP as a potentially malignant condition with increased risk of developing Squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck, SCCHN, but malignant transformation of OLP is a matter of controversy. The aim of these studies was to further elucidate the autoimmune and premalignant character of OLP. Factors involved in malignant transformation, autoimmunity and inflammation were analyzed in normal oral mucosa, OLP and SCCHN. Factors studied were the signal transducers of Transforming growth factor-β the Smad proteins, microRNAs, COX-2, the receptor CXCR-3 and its ligands CXCL-10 and -11 and ELF-3. Material and methods: In the study on Smad protein expression formalin fixed and paraffin embedded biopsies from normal oral mucosa, OLP and SCCHN was used. For the remaining studies fresh frozen biopsies from OLP and normal controls was used. All of the fresh frozen OLP samples and their controls were micro dissected to be able to analyze the epithelial part only as well as sections of the whole biopsy. Methods used are immunohistochemistry, qRT-PCR and Western blot. Results: Analyses of smad proteins expression showed a clear increase of smad3 and smad7 in OLP compared to normal oral mucosa. The expressions of smad proteins in the tumors were more heterogeneous. Some of the SCCHN samples showed a similar expression as OLP while others did not. Micro RNA analyzes showed that miR-21 and miR-203 was significantly increased in OLP epithelium compared to normal oral epithelium while the expression of miR-125b and their potential targets p53 and p63 was decreased in OLP. The presence of COX-2 was significantly higher in OLP than normal controls. At the same time the expression of miR-26b, a suggested repressor of COX-2 was decreased in OLP compared to normal mucosa. The receptor CXCR-3 and its ligands CXCL-10 and -11 were increased in OLP. Expressions of the differentiation involved factor ELF-3 mRNA as well as protein were decreased in OLP. Conclusion: The factors studied are involved in differentiation, malignant transformation and inflammation. Some of the results in these studies indicate a similar expression pattern for OLP and SCCHN. Several of the factors studied are involved in differentiation and their deregulation suggests a disturbed differentiation pattern and this could indicate a premalignant character of OLP but malignant transformation of OLP lesions are relative rare. A lot of these factors are also involved in inflammatory processes and connected to autoimmune diseases and their deregulation in OLP could also support an autoimmune cause of the disease. Based on our studies a suggestion is that the disturbed differentiation pattern triggers the intense immune response directed against the epithelial cells seen in OLP.

  • Exploring students’ embodied engagement in physics teaching through diverse analytical lenses
  • 2024
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In science education research, there is a growing body of studies focusing on the role of embodied experiences and multiple representations in pupils’ learning. In this study, we present findings from a re-analysis of data using different theoretical and methodological approaches drawn from embodied cognition and social semiotics. Specifically, we have re-analysed video data that involves one teacher’s work with Newtons third law (force and reaction force) in grade five (11 – 12 years) with 27 students (Danielsson, Jeppsson. Nestlog & Tang, 2023). The analysis is carried out at a clause level as the minimal unit of analysis, with embodied gestural and material manipulation accompanying the verbal transcription. To further broaden our scope, we incorporated various analytical strategies from embodied cognition (e.g., Kersting, Haglund & Steier, 2021), the social semiotic theory of multimodality (e.g., Kress, 2011), and force dynamics in language and cognition (Talmy, 1998) to explore students’ embodied engagement with the studied phenomenon from different lenses. Based on our analysis we problematize and discuss consequences for science education research and practice when video data from a science classroom is processed from different theoretical and methodological perspectives.

  • Towards ICD-11 for alcohol dependence: Diagnostic agreement with ICD-10, DSM-5, DSM-IV, DSM-III-R and DSM-III diagnoses in a Swedish general population of women
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Drug and Alcohol Dependence. - : Elsevier BV. - 0376-8716 .- 1879-0046. ; 227
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The proposed ICD-11 classification includes major revisions of alcohol dependence. We aimed to evaluate the presence of, and concordance between the proposed ICD-11 dependence and ICD-10, DSM-5, DSM-IV, DSM-III-R and DSM-III in a general population. We also examine as aspects of validity, including longitudinal stability and how meaningful clinical correlates associated across the systems. Methods: Longitudinal population-based study of women in Gothenburg, Sweden. Participants (n = 1,614) were sampled during 1989-2015 through double-phase stratified random sampling. Alcohol use disorders were assessed through structured diagnostic interviews (CIDI-SAM), at baseline and follow-up 5-10 years later (n = 930). Concordance was examined using contingency tables and Cohen's kappa coefficient. Results: At baseline, the prevalence of lifetime alcohol dependence was 10.6 % according to ICD-11. Corre-sponding figures were ICD-10, 4.0 %; DSM-IV, 4.3 %; DSM-III-R, 7.5 %; and DSM-III, 12.3 %.DSM-5 Alcohol Use Disorder was 14.3 %. Concordance between ICD-11 and other diagnoses ranged from almost perfect agreement (with DSM-5 AUD) to substantial (with DSM-III and DSM-III-R) and moderate (with ICD-10 and DSM-IV). The broadening of the "persistent use despite problems" criteria in ICD-11 had little effect on the prevalence. ICD-11 captured a lower proportion of family history of alcohol problems and treatment-seeking compared to ICD-10 and DSM-IV and showed lower stability. Conclusions: The proposed ICD-11 algorithm yields a higher prevalence than either ICD-10 or DSM-III-R /-IV dependence, as well as lower agreement with previous diagnostic systems, lower longitudinal stability and weaker associations with clinical correlates. This is important for knowing how changes in diagnostic criteria impact prevalence estimates and related research.

  • A Retrospective Study of Posttransplant Amiodarone Exposition on Clad Development and Survival After Lung Transplantation.
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Transplantation proceedings. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-2623 .- 0041-1345. ; 54:3, s. 789-794
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lung transplantation is a lifesaving procedure, still marred by worse results than other solid organ transplants. The 1-year mortality is 10%, and within 5 years after the procedure, half of patients develop chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD), which also is the main limiting factor for long-term survival. Heart arrhythmias are also common directly after a lung transplant, and 1 treatment for this is the drug amiodarone. Recent research suggests that amiodarone exposure leads to activation of fibroblasts, a cell type that synthesizes stroma in the lung, associated with acute respiratory distress syndrome and CLAD. This study aims to retrospectively investigate the effect of posttransplant amiodarone treatment on survival and CLAD.All patients transplanted at Sahlgrenska University Hospital between 2007 and 2018 were reviewed, and adult patients with a follow-up within Sweden were included. Of the 394 patients who met this inclusion criteria, retrospective data concerning postoperative complications and long-term outcomes were retrieved. A multivariable Cox proportional hazards model was applied to identify a set of independently significant predictors.Posttransplant use of amiodarone was associated with shorter survival (hazard ratio=1.65; 95% confidence interval, 1.08-2.54; P=.02). Amiodarone exposure was not associated with CLAD (hazard ratio=0.64; 95% confidence interval, 0.33-1.22; P=.17).An increased risk of death but not CLAD was observed in patients treated with amiodarone postoperatively after lung transplantation in the current cohort.

  • FLOW FIELD AROUND AND IN A SAAB 9-3 CONVERTIBLE
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: EUROMECH COLLOQUIUM 509,External aerodynamics of Railway Vehicles Trucks Buses and Cars, Berlin, Germany, March 24--25, 2009. ; , s. 144-157
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aerodynamic comfort in a four seated convertible with open roof is not as goodas many would like it to be. This job was initiated to look at what should be done to improvethis. The car used for this study was a Saab 9-3 convertible. Most of the work was done inCFD in the commercial code Fluent. The flow field in the cockpit was first of all analyzed and evaluated. The problem with convertiblesis the large recirculation bubble that occurs around the passenger compartment. Therear seat passengers are located in an area of this zone with very high wind speeds comparedto the front seat passengers. The flow field was analyzed by several pressure and velocityplots and a method to evaluate comfort grading was developed. The selected main variable tocompare cases was the mean velocity that the passengers head is exposed to. This was foundto be the most affecting parameter because it affects not only the dynamic pressure, but alsothe temperature discomfort. Geometry optimizations of windows, wind shield and wind blockershave been simulated and evaluated. Height and length of the side windows and a numberof different wind deflectors on the wind shield, plus wind blockers inside and behind cockpitwas tested. The results show that the biggest potential of improvement is the wind deflector onthe windshield and some of the wind blockers.

  • Performance of an Automotive Under-Body Diffuser Applied to a Sedan and a Wagon Vehicle
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: SAE International Journal of Passenger Cars - Mechanical Systems. - : SAE International. - 1946-3995 .- 1946-4002. ; 6:1, s. 293-307
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reducing resistance forces all over the vehicle is the most sustainable way to reduce fuel consumption. Aerodynamicdrag is the dominating resistance force at highway speeds, and the power required to overcome this force increases by the power three of speed. The exterior body and especially the under-body and rear-end geometry of a passenger car aresignificant contributors to the overall aerodynamic drag. To reduce the aerodynamic drag it is of great importance to have a good pressure recovery at the rear. Since pressure drag is the dominating aerodynamic drag force for a passenger vehicle, the drag force will be a measure of the difference between the pressure in front and at the rear. There is high stagnationpressure at the front which requires a base pressure as high as possible. The pressure will recover from the sides by a taperangle, from the top by the rear wind screen, and from the bottom, by a diffuser. It is not necessarily the case that anoptimized lower part of the rear end for a wagon-type car has the same performance as for a sedan or hatch-back car. Thisstudy focused on the function of an under-body diffuser applied to a sedan and wagon car. The diffuser geometry waschosen from a feasibility stand-point of a production vehicle such as a passenger car. The fluid dynamic function andtheory of the automotive under-body diffuser working as a drag reduction device is discussed. The flow physics of theunder-body and the wake was analyzed to understand the diffuser behaviour in its application to lift and drag forces on avehicle in ground proximity. This work is mainly a numerical analysis that uses the traditional CFD approach from theautomotive industry. Results from this study show a potential to reduce aerodynamic drag of the sedan car approximately10%, and the wagon car by 2-3 %. The possible gain was much bigger for the sedan vehicle and the optimum occurs at ahigher diffuser angle. This was most likely due to the fact that the sedan car in its original shape produced more lift force than the wagon, a wagon usually produces very little lift or even down-force. Lift forces were also reduced with the use of under-body covers with diffuser. The down-force increased, or lift force decreased, linearly with increased diffuser angle, and the trend was the same for both sedan and wagon rear ends. Flow analysis of the wake showed the importance of how the wake is balanced.

  • Näringspolitikens effekter : brister i informationen om statliga satsningar
  • 2014
