  • Experimental access to Transition Distribution Amplitudes with the PANDA experiment at FAIR
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 51:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion (pi N) TDAs from (p) over barp -> e(+)e(-)pi(0) reaction with the future PANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center-of-mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair q(2), the amplitude of the signal channel (p) over barp -> e(+)e(-)pi(0) admits a QCD factorized description in terms of pi N TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward aid backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring (p) over barp -> e(+)e(-)pi(0) with the PANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. (p) over barp -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) were performed for the center-of-mass energy squared s = 5 GeV2 and s = 10 GeV2, in the kinematic regions 3.0 < q(2) < 4.3 GeV2 and 5 < q(2) < 9 GeV2, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone vertical bar cos theta(pi 0)vertical bar > 0.5 in the proton-antiproton center-of-mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the PANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of 5 . 10(7) (1 . 10(7)) at low (high) q(2) for s = 5 GeV2, and of 1 . 10(8) (6 . 10(6)) at low (high) q(2) for s = 10 GeV2, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around 40%. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to 2 of integrated luminosity. The cross sections obtained from the simulations are used to show that a test of QCD collinear factorization can be done at the lowest order by measuring scaling laws and angular distributions. The future measurement of the signal channel cross section with PANDA will provide a new test of the perturbative QCD description of a novel class of hard exclusive reactions and will open the possibility of experimentally accessing pi N TDAs.

  • Feasibility study for the measurement of pi N transition distribution amplitudes at (P)over-barANDA in (P)over-barp -> J/psi pi(0)
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 95:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The exclusive charmonium production process in (P) over barp annihilation with an associated pi 0 meson (p) over barp -> J/psi pi(0) is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. The feasibility of measuring this reaction through the J/psi -> e(+) e(-) decay channel with the AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt ((P) over bar ANDA) experiment is investigated. Simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as the background rejection from various sources including the (P) over barp -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) and (p) over barp -> J/psi pi(0)pi(0) reactions are performed with PANDAROOT, the simulation and analysis software framework of the (P) over bar ANDA experiment. It is shown that the measurement can be done at (P) over bar ANDA with significant constraining power under the assumption of an integrated luminosity attainable in four to five months of data taking at the maximum design luminosity.

  • Study of doubly strange systems using stored antiprotons
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - : Elsevier. - 0375-9474 .- 1873-1554. ; 954, s. 323-340
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bound nuclear systems with two units of strangeness are still poorly known despite their importance for many strong interaction phenomena. Stored antiprotons beams in the GeV range represent an unparalleled factory for various hyperon-antihyperon pairs. Their outstanding large production probability in antiproton collisions will open the floodgates for a series of new studies of systems which contain two or even more units of strangeness at the PANDA experiment at FAIR. For the first time, high resolution gamma-spectroscopy of doubly strange Lambda Lambda-hypernuclei will be performed, thus complementing measurements of ground state decays of Lambda Lambda-hypernuclei at J-PARC or possible decays of particle unstable hypernuclei in heavy ion reactions. High resolution spectroscopy of multistrange Xi(-) -atoms will be feasible and even the production of Omega(-) -atoms will be within reach. The latter might open the door to the vertical bar S vertical bar = 3 world in strangeness nuclear physics, by the study of the hadronic Omega(-) -nucleus interaction. For the first time it will be possible to study the behavior of Xi(+) in nuclear systems under well controlled conditions.

  • Feasibility studies of time-like proton electromagnetic form factors at PANDA at FAIR
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Publishing Company. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 52:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Simulation results for future measurements of electromagnetic proton form factors at P ¯ ANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported. The statistical precision with which the proton form factors can be determined is estimated. The signal channel p¯ p→ e+e- is studied on the basis of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main background channel, i.e.p¯ p→ π+π-, is studied. Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistical and systematical uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated using two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam conditions and detector performance.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 49:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This document describes the technical layout and the expected performance of the Straw Tube Tracker (STT), the main tracking detector of the PANDA target spectrometer. The STT encloses a Micro-Vertex-Detector (MVD) for the inner tracking and is followed in beam direction by a set of GEM stations. The tasks of the STT are the measurement of the particle momentum from the reconstructed trajectory and the measurement of the specific energy loss for a particle identification. Dedicated simulations with full analysis studies of certain proton-antiproton reactions, identified as being benchmark tests for the whole PANDA scientific program, have been performed to test the STT layout and performance. The results are presented, and the time lines to construct the STT are described.

  • Global consortium for the classification of fungi and fungus-like taxa
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: MYCOSPHERE. - : Mushroom Research Foundation. - 2077-7000 .- 2077-7019. ; 14:1, s. 1960-2012
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Global Consortium for the Classification of Fungi and fungus-like taxa is an international initiative of more than 550 mycologists to develop an electronic structure for the classification of these organisms. The members of the Consortium originate from 55 countries/regions worldwide, from a wide range of disciplines, and include senior, mid-career and early-career mycologists and plant pathologists. The Consortium will publish a biannual update of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa, to act as an international scheme for other scientists. Notes on all newly published taxa at or above the level of species will be prepared and published online on the Outline of Fungi website (https://www.outlineoffungi.org/), and these will be finally published in the biannual edition of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa. Comments on recent important taxonomic opinions on controversial topics will be included in the biannual outline. For example, 'to promote a more stable taxonomy in Fusarium given the divergences over its generic delimitation', or 'are there too many genera in the Boletales?' and even more importantly, 'what should be done with the tremendously diverse 'dark fungal taxa?' There are undeniable differences in mycologists' perceptions and opinions regarding species classification as well as the establishment of new species. Given the pluralistic nature of fungal taxonomy and its implications for species concepts and the nature of species, this consortium aims to provide a platform to better refine and stabilise fungal classification, taking into consideration views from different parties. In the future, a confidential voting system will be set up to gauge the opinions of all mycologists in the Consortium on important topics. The results of such surveys will be presented to the International Commission on the Taxonomy of Fungi (ICTF) and the Nomenclature Committee for Fungi (NCF) with opinions and percentages of votes for and against. Criticisms based on scientific evidence with regards to nomenclature, classifications, and taxonomic concepts will be welcomed, and any recommendations on specific taxonomic issues will also be encouraged; however, we will encourage professionally and ethically responsible criticisms of others' work. This biannual ongoing project will provide an outlet for advances in various topics of fungal classification, nomenclature, and taxonomic concepts and lead to a community-agreed classification scheme for the fungi and fungus-like taxa. Interested parties should contact the lead author if they would like to be involved in future outlines.

  • The Global Soil Mycobiome consortium dataset for boosting fungal diversity research
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Fungal Diversity. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1560-2745 .- 1878-9129. ; 111, s. 573-588
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fungi are highly important biotic components of terrestrial ecosystems, but we still have a very limited understanding about their diversity and distribution. This data article releases a global soil fungal dataset of the Global Soil Mycobiome consortium (GSMc) to boost further research in fungal diversity, biogeography and macroecology. The dataset comprises 722,682 fungal operational taxonomic units (OTUs) derived from PacBio sequencing of full-length ITS and 18S-V9 variable regions from 3200 plots in 108 countries on all continents. The plots are supplied with geographical and edaphic metadata. The OTUs are taxonomically and functionally assigned to guilds and other functional groups. The entire dataset has been corrected by excluding chimeras, index-switch artefacts and potential contamination. The dataset is more inclusive in terms of geographical breadth and phylogenetic diversity of fungi than previously published data. The GSMc dataset is available over the PlutoF repository.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 447:7146, s. 799-816
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the generation and analysis of functional data from multiple, diverse experiments performed on a targeted 1% of the human genome as part of the pilot phase of the ENCODE Project. These data have been further integrated and augmented by a number of evolutionary and computational analyses. Together, our results advance the collective knowledge about human genome function in several major areas. First, our studies provide convincing evidence that the genome is pervasively transcribed, such that the majority of its bases can be found in primary transcripts, including non-protein-coding transcripts, and those that extensively overlap one another. Second, systematic examination of transcriptional regulation has yielded new understanding about transcription start sites, including their relationship to specific regulatory sequences and features of chromatin accessibility and histone modification. Third, a more sophisticated view of chromatin structure has emerged, including its inter-relationship with DNA replication and transcriptional regulation. Finally, integration of these new sources of information, in particular with respect to mammalian evolution based on inter- and intra-species sequence comparisons, has yielded new mechanistic and evolutionary insights concerning the functional landscape of the human genome. Together, these studies are defining a path for pursuit of a more comprehensive characterization of human genome function.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nature Climate Change. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1758-678X .- 1758-6798. ; 9:11, s. 852-857
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent warming in the Arctic, which has been amplified during the winter(1-3), greatly enhances microbial decomposition of soil organic matter and subsequent release of carbon dioxide (CO2)(4). However, the amount of CO2 released in winter is not known and has not been well represented by ecosystem models or empirically based estimates(5,6). Here we synthesize regional in situ observations of CO2 flux from Arctic and boreal soils to assess current and future winter carbon losses from the northern permafrost domain. We estimate a contemporary loss of 1,662 TgC per year from the permafrost region during the winter season (October-April). This loss is greater than the average growing season carbon uptake for this region estimated from process models (-1,032 TgC per year). Extending model predictions to warmer conditions up to 2100 indicates that winter CO2 emissions will increase 17% under a moderate mitigation scenario-Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5-and 41% under business-as-usual emissions scenario-Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5. Our results provide a baseline for winter CO2 emissions from northern terrestrial regions and indicate that enhanced soil CO2 loss due to winter warming may offset growing season carbon uptake under future climatic conditions.

  • Deep phenotyping of 34,128 adult patients hospitalised with COVID-19 in an international network study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Comorbid conditions appear to be common among individuals hospitalised with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) but estimates of prevalence vary and little is known about the prior medication use of patients. Here, we describe the characteristics of adults hospitalised with COVID-19 and compare them with influenza patients. We include 34,128 (US: 8362, South Korea: 7341, Spain: 18,425) COVID-19 patients, summarising between 4811 and 11,643 unique aggregate characteristics. COVID-19 patients have been majority male in the US and Spain, but predominantly female in South Korea. Age profiles vary across data sources. Compared to 84,585 individuals hospitalised with influenza in 2014-19, COVID-19 patients have more typically been male, younger, and with fewer comorbidities and lower medication use. While protecting groups vulnerable to influenza is likely a useful starting point in the response to COVID-19, strategies will likely need to be broadened to reflect the particular characteristics of individuals being hospitalised with COVID-19. Detailed knowledge of the characteristics of COVID-19 patients helps with public health planning. Here, the authors use routinely-collected data from seven databases in three countries to describe the characteristics of >30,000 patients admitted with COVID-19 and compare them with those admitted for influenza in previous years.

  • Risk of hydroxychloroquine alone and in combination with azithromycin in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis: a multinational, retrospective study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Lancet Rheumatology. - : Elsevier BV. - 2665-9913. ; 2:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Hydroxychloroquine, a drug commonly used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, has received much negative publicity for adverse events associated with its authorisation for emergency use to treat patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. We studied the safety of hydroxychloroquine, alone and in combination with azithromycin, to determine the risk associated with its use in routine care in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Methods In this multinational, retrospective study, new user cohort studies in patients with rheumatoid arthritis aged 18 years or older and initiating hydroxychloroquine were compared with those initiating sulfasalazine and followed up over 30 days, with 16 severe adverse events studied. Self-controlled case series were done to further establish safety in wider populations, and included all users of hydroxychloroquine regardless of rheumatoid arthritis status or indication. Separately, severe adverse events associated with hydroxychloroquine plus azithromycin (compared with hydroxychloroquine plus amoxicillin) were studied. Data comprised 14 sources of claims data or electronic medical records from Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, the UK, and the USA. Propensity score stratification and calibration using negative control outcomes were used to address confounding. Cox models were fitted to estimate calibrated hazard ratios (HRs) according to drug use. Estimates were pooled where the I-2 value was less than 0.4. Findings The study included 956 374 users of hydroxychloroquine, 310 350 users of sulfasalazine, 323 122 users of hydroxychloroquine plus azithromycin, and 351 956 users of hydroxychloroquine plus amoxicillin. No excess risk of severe adverse events was identified when 30-day hydroxychloroquine and sulfasalazine use were compared. Selfcontrolled case series confirmed these findings. However, long-term use of hydroxychloroquine appeared to be associated with increased cardiovascular mortality (calibrated HR 1.65 [95% CI 1.12-2.44]). Addition of azithromycin appeared to be associated with an increased risk of 30-day cardiovascular mortality (calibrated HR 2.19 [95% CI 1.22-3.95]), chest pain or angina (1.15 [1.05-1.26]), and heart failure (1.22 [1.02-1.45]). Interpretation Hydroxychloroquine treatment appears to have no increased risk in the short term among patients with rheumatoid arthritis, but in the long term it appears to be associated with excess cardiovascular mortality. The addition of azithromycin increases the risk of heart failure and cardiovascular mortality even in the short term. We call for careful consideration of the benefit-risk trade-off when counselling those on hydroxychloroquine treatment. Copyright (c) 2020 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier Ltd.

  • The Interplay between CD27(dull) and CD27(brig)(ht) B Cells Ensures the Flexibility, Stability, and Resilience of Human B Cell Memory
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Cell Reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 2211-1247. ; 30:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Memory B cells (MBCs) epitomize the adaptation of the immune system to the environment. We identify two MBC subsets in peripheral blood, CD27(dull) and CD27(bright) MBCs, whose frequency changes with age. Heavy chain variable region (VH) usage, somatic mutation frequency replacement-to-silent ratio, and CDR3 property changes, reflecting consecutive selection of highly antigen-specific, low cross-reactive antibody variants, all demonstrate that CD27(du)(ll) and CD27(bright) MBCs represent sequential MBC developmental stages, and stringent antigen-driven pressure selects CD27(du)(ll) into the CD27(bright) MBC pool. Dynamics of human MBCs are exploited in pregnancy, when 50% of maternal MBCs are lost and CD27(du)(ll) MBCs transit to the more differentiated CD27 bright stage. In the postpartum period, the maternal MBC pool is replenished by the expansion of persistent CD27(du)(ll) clones. Thus, the stability and flexibility of human B cell memory is ensured by CD27(du)(ll) MBCs that expand and differentiate in response to change.

  • Ingår i: Global change biology. - : Wiley. - 1365-2486 .- 1354-1013. ; 28:22, s. 6696-6710
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fungi are highly diverse organisms, which provide multiple ecosystem services. However, compared with charismatic animals and plants, the distribution patterns and conservation needs of fungi have been little explored. Here, we examined endemicity patterns, global change vulnerability and conservation priority areas for functional groups of soil fungi based on six global surveys using a high-resolution, long-read metabarcoding approach. We found that the endemicity of all fungi and most functional groups peaks in tropical habitats, including Amazonia, Yucatan, West-Central Africa, Sri Lanka, and New Caledonia, with a negligible island effect compared with plants and animals. We also found that fungi are predominantly vulnerable to drought, heat and land-cover change, particularly in dry tropical regions with high human population density. Fungal conservation areas of highest priority include herbaceous wetlands, tropical forests, and woodlands. We stress that more attention should be focused on the conservation of fungi, especially root symbiotic arbuscular mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal fungi in tropical regions as well as unicellular early-diverging groups and macrofungi in general. Given the low overlap between the endemicity of fungi and macroorganisms, but high conservation needs in both groups, detailed analyses on distribution and conservation requirements are warranted for other microorganisms and soil organisms.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 82:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The azimuthal correlation, Δ ϕ12, of high transverse momentum jets in pp collisions at s=13 TeV is studied by applying PB-TMD distributions to NLO calculations via MCatNLO together with the PB-TMD parton shower. A very good description of the cross section as a function of Δ ϕ12 is observed. In the back-to-back region of Δ ϕ12→ π, a very good agreement is observed with the PB-TMD Set 2 distributions while significant deviations are obtained with the PB-TMD Set 1 distributions. Set 1 uses the evolution scale while Set 2 uses transverse momentum as an argument in αs, and the above observation therefore confirms the importance of an appropriate soft-gluon coupling in angular ordered parton evolution. The total uncertainties of the predictions are dominated by the scale uncertainties of the matrix element, while the uncertainties coming from the PB-TMDs and the corresponding PB-TMD shower are very small. The Δ ϕ12 measurements are also compared with predictions using MCatNLO together Pythia8, illustrating the importance of details of the parton shower evolution.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photoluminescence and deep-level transient spectroscopy are used to study the effect of irradiation with fast neutrons and high-energy Kr (235 MeV) and Bi (710 MeV) ions on the optical and electrical properties of high-resistivity high-purity n-type 4H-SiC epitaxial layers grown by chemical vapor deposition. Electrical characteristics were studied using the barrier structures based on these epitaxial layers: Schottky barriers with Al and Cr contacts and p(+)-n-n(+) diodes fabricated by Al ion implantation. According to the experimental data obtained, neutrons and high-energy ions give rise to the same defect-related centers. The results show that, even for the extremely high ionization density (34 keV/nm) characteristic of Bi ions, the formation of the defect structure in SiC single crystals is governed by energy losses of particles due to elastic collisions.

    • Results of complex studies of structural, optical, and electrical characteristics of 4H-SiC n-type low-doped epitaxial layers grown by the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method are presented. Characteristics of CVD layers grown on commercial wafers with and without a thin (<0.1 mum) buffer layer grown by liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) between the commercial wafer and CVD epitaxial layer were compared. It has been shown that the LPE filling process caused a significant improvement in the structural quality of CVD layers. Cathodoluminescence (CL) data and electrical characteristics of Schottky barriers (SB) revealed that the LPE layer also made the concentration profiles of the uncompensated donors and recombination centers for holes as well as the hole diffusion lengths more uniform over the CVD layer. According to CL and secondary ion mass-spectroscopy measurements the presence of aluminum as an impurity was detected in initial commercial wafers, as well as having LPE and CVD epitaxial layers. Forward current-voltage characteristics of SBs formed on CVD layers with and without a LPE buffer layer followed an exponential relationship with an ideality factor of 1.04-1.06 over six to seven orders of magnitude in current density. A noticeable increase of the breakdown voltage was also observed in samples with a LPE layer.

    • The possibility of about 50 times the inneramplification of signals in SiC-based detectors of short-range ions is shown. The detector has an n-p-n+-like structure, where the p-type base was grown epitaxially on a 6H n+-SiC substrate. To complete the structure a Schottky barrier was made on top. Detector parameters were investigated in a "floating base" regime. Alpha particles from 244Cm were used and the augmentation of signal (E) with increasing applied voltage (U) was investigated. A superlinear increase of E was observed with a significant (tens of times) amplification of the introduced by the alpha particle nonequilibrium charge. It was also found that the nonuniformity of the diffusion-drift carrier transport parameters in the films does not exceed 10%. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 479:7373, s. 359-364
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite decades of research, the roles of climate and humans in driving the dramatic extinctions of large-bodied mammals during the Late Quaternary period remain contentious. Here we use ancient DNA, species distribution models and the human fossil record to elucidate how climate and humans shaped the demographic history of woolly rhinoceros, woolly mammoth, wild horse, reindeer, bison and musk ox. We show that climate has been a major driver of population change over the past 50,000 years. However, each species responds differently to the effects of climatic shifts, habitat redistribution and human encroachment. Although climate change alone can explain the extinction of some species, such as Eurasian musk ox and woolly rhinoceros, a combination of climatic and anthropogenic effects appears to be responsible for the extinction of others, including Eurasian steppe bison and wild horse. We find no genetic signature or any distinctive range dynamics distinguishing extinct from surviving species, emphasizing the challenges associated with predicting future responses of extant mammals to climate and human-mediated habitat change.

    • Three species of the family Teloschistaceae (lichenized Ascomycota) are described as new to science from Southern and Eastern Siberia and the Far East. Corticolous Caloplaca saviczii belongs to the genus Caloplaca s. str.; it has C. cerina-like apothecia and green to grey-green, crateriform soralia with a white rim. Lendemeriella aureopruinosa is a saxicolous taxon with a thin grey thallus and small apothecia 0.3-0.6 mm in diameter, with a dark orange disc usually bearing epipsamma and often with a grey true exciple containing the pigment Cinereorufa-green. Orientophila infirma is a corticolous species with an endophloeodal thallus and small orange apothecia, 0.2-0.3 mm in diameter, usually with an inconspicuous thalline exciple. All new taxa presumably have a boreal north-eastern distribution in Asia.

    • The influence of the irradiation with neutrons, Kr+ (245 MeV) and Bi+ (710 MeV) ions on the optical and electrical properties of high-resistivity, high-purity 4H-SiC epitaxial layers grown by chemical vapor deposition was investigated using photoluminescence and deep-level transient spectroscopy. Electrical characteristics were studied using Al and Cr Schottky barriers as well as p(+)-n-n(+) diodes fabricated by Al ion implantation on this epitaxial layers. It was found that both "light" neutrons and high energy heavy ions introduced identical defect centers in 4H-SiC. So, even at extremely high density of the ionization energy of 34 keV/mn, typical for Bi+ ion bombardment, damage structure formation in SiC single crystal is governed by energy loss in elastic collisions.

  • Electrical study of fast neutron irradiated devices based on 4H-SiC CVD epitaxial layers
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: SILICON CARBIDE AND RELATED MATERIALS 2003, PRTS 1 AND 2. ; , s. 705-708
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The radiation-induced defect formation in high purity 4H-SiC CVD epitaxial layers and changes in the electrical properties of diode structures based on its after irradiation with different fluences I MeV neutrons were investigated at temperatures as high as 700 K. The Z(1), deep center, typical for 4H-SiC, was observed both in the initial and irradiated samples. The presence and number of different deep levels increased with the neutron fluence. The rectifying properties of the diode structures disappeared after neutron irradiation with fluence of 6.2x10(14) cm(-2). However, the diode structures that had been degraded after irradiation with fast neutrons, recovered their properties at the temperature of 700 K.

  • Effect of irradiation with fast neutrons on electrical characteristics of devices based on CVD 4H-SiC epitaxial layers

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of irradiation with 1-MeV neutrons on electrical properties of Al-based Schottky barriers and p(+)-n-n(+) diodes doped by ion-implantation with Al was studied; the devices were formed on the basis of high-resistivity, pure 4H-SiC epitaxial layers possessing n-type conductivity and grown by vapor-transport epitaxy. The use of such structures made it possible to study the radiation defects in the epitaxial layer at temperatures as high as 700 K. Rectifying properties of the diode structures were no longer observed after irradiation of the samples with neutrons with a dose of 6 x 10(14) cm(-2); this effect is caused by high (up to 50 GOmega) resistance of the layer damaged by neutron radiation. However, the diode characteristics of irradiated p(+)-n-n(+) structures were partially recovered after an annealing at 650 K.

  • Conductivity of two-dimensional C60 polymers
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 4th International Workshop on Fullerenes and Atomic Clusters (IWFAC'99), St. Petersburg 1999. - : Overseas Publishers Association N.V.. ; , s. 151-156
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The general trend in the shift of electronic properties as the result of polymerization has been studied with the aid of temperature dependences of conductivity. Samples representing the pure rhombohedral phase exhibit great anisotropy in their electrical properties. The main features of the behaviour of these samples are: (i) in the z-direction the resistivity is of the order of several kOhm cm and decreases with temperature; (ii) in the x-y direction resistivity is less than 1 Ohm cm and shows a minimum at a certain temperature.

  • Ingår i: Carbon. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0008-6223 .- 1873-3891. ; 39:14, s. 2203-2209
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electrical properties of two-dimensionally polymerized C60 fullerenes were studied. Fullerene matrices consisting of randomly oriented domains are compared to the highly-oriented rhombohedral phase. The conductivity of the randomly oriented polymers obeys the Arrhenius law and can be described in a multiple trapping model. The oriented phase of polymeric C60 shows a distinct anisotropy in the electrical properties with a metallic-like in-plane conductivity at high temperatures.

  • Structure and electrochemical studies of [(trispicMeen)ClFeIII OFeIII Cl(trispicMeen)](2+). Spectroscopic characterization of the mixed-valence Fe-III OFeII form. Relevance to the active site of dinuclear iron-oxo proteins
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Inorganic Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-510X .- 0020-1669. ; 36:5, s. 846-853
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The dinuclear species [(trispicMeen)(ClFeOFeCl)-O-III-Cl-III(trispicMeen)]Cl(OH)(H2O)(7) (1) (trispicMeen = N,N,N'-tris-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N'-methylethane- 1,2-diamine) was synthesized. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with a = 33.87(2) Angstrom, b = 17.42(2) Angstrom, c = 23.41(5) Angstrom, beta = 132.88(5)degrees, V = 10 121(25) Angstrom(3), and Z = 8. It contains an almost linear unit (Fe-O-Fe angle = 177.4(7)degrees). The potentially pentadentate Ligand is in fact only tetracoordinated with one pyridine not bound to the metal ion. The octahedral coordination of Fe(Ln) is completed by one chloride ion. The structure of [(bispicMeen)ClFeOFeCl(bispicMeen)]Cl-2 . CH3COCH3 . 2H(2)O (2) (bispicMeen = N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-N'-methylethane-1,2-diamine) was also determined. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with a 11.124(4) Angstrom, b = 22.769(9) Angstrom, c = 15.874(6) Angstrom, beta = 97.79(4)degrees, V = 3984(3) Angstrom(3), and Z = 4. The main difference from 1 is that, in 2, the Fe-O-Fe unit is bent with an FeOFe angle 152.3(3)degrees. In cyclic voltammetry, 1 exhibits two reduction peaks at -0.230 and -0.960 V/SCE. They correspond respectively to the reduction to the (FeFeIII)-Fe-II and (FeFeIII)-Fe-II states. Cyclic voltammetry shows that the mixed-valent form [(trispicMeen)(ClFeOFeCl)-O-II-Cl-III(trispicMeen)](+) (E degrees = -0.175 V/SCE) is in equilibrium with another species (E degrees = +0.065 V/SCE) proposed to be [(trispicMeen)(FeOFeCl)-O-II-Cl-III(trispicMeen)](2+) in which a chloride ion has been displaced by the originally unbound pyridine. The equilibrium constant was estimated to be 90 M(-1), and the rate of the recombination of chloride to the [(trispicMeen)(FeOFeCl)-O-III-Cl-III(trispicMeen)](3+) complex was found equal to 3 x 10(5) M(-1) s(-1). Controlled potential electrolysis of an acetonitrile solution of 1 allowed the preparation of the mixed-valent Fe(II)-O-Fe(III) form which gives an almost isotropic EPR signal similar to that already observed with ore-bridged model compounds (Holt, et al. Inorg. Chem. 1993, 32, 5844. Hartman, et al. J. Am. Chem. Sec. 1987, 109, 7387) but different from the rhombic one observed in the mixed valent form of MMO. The mixed-valent forms slowly disproportionate to a mixture of (FeFeIII)-Fe-III and Fe(II) forms. The mixed-valent forms could be generated by radiolysis at 77 K, and an EPR study of the mixed-valent forms obtained by this procedure demonstrated that these species could not be protonated. Radiolysis of 1 at 77 K afforded the EPR spectrum of [(trispicMeen)(ClFeOFeCl)-O-II-Cl-III(trispicMeen)](+); upon annealing at 200 K, the solution gave an EPR spectrum very similar to that observed on the electrochemically reduced solution. This is in agreement with the observation of substitution of a chloride ligand. The mixed-valent form was not detected with the analogous complexes of the bispicen family: [(bispicMeen)ClFeOFeCl(bispicMeen)]Cl-2 . CH3COCH3 . 2H(2)O (2) and [(bispicMe(2)en)ClFeOFeCl(bispicMe(2)en)]Cl-2 (3). Upon reduction, these complexes quickly (at CV time scale) decompose to mononuclear species.
