  • Analysis of trcuncated 2D periodic structures
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium Digest. - 0149-645X. ; , s. 1071-1074
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A multiport admittance/impedance matrix for the truncated 2D periodic structure is derived via expansion of node voltages and currents in terms of Floquet`s waves. It is shown that for uniaxial propagation, the structure comprised of a finite number of columns/rows is identical to multicoupled lines with properly defined parameters. The 4x4 unit cell array fed at different sides is analyzed using the developed formulation. The results are then verified with a rigorous Sonnet simulation, thereby confirming the validity of the presented approach

  • Characterization Accuracy of High-Q Reactors Using Broadband Reflection/Transmission Measurement Techniques
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of EUMC 2006, 10-15 Sept. 2006, Manchester, UK. ; , s. 975-979
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Characterization accuracy of high-Q reactors due to measurement uncertainties is analyzed in this paper. Two broadband techniques based on reflection and transmission type measurements are considered. A differential calculus combined with an equivalent circuit representation of the measurement error are used here to derive simple analytic formulas. It is shown that the accuracy of calibrated VNA is insufficient to obtain accurate loss data. A measurement procedure is proposed that improves the accuracy of loss measurement. A measurement example is given demonstrating the utility of the above approach.

  • Characterization Techniques for Thin and Thick Ferroelectric Films
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of the European Ceramic Society. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-619X .- 0955-2219. ; 27:8-9, s. 2759-2764
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A few measurement techniques are presented for characterization of thin and thick ferroelectric films at microwave frequencies. Broadband reflection type measurements using a probe station are considered for on wafer characterization of thin films. The accuracy of the method is analyzed with respect to measurement residual systematic errors. A test structure is introduced allowing quick and accurate extraction of the film parameters based on the rigorous full-wave model. Two measurement techniques are reported for electrode-less characterization of thick ferroelectric films. The first method (X-band) is based on the reflection type measurement of a resonator established by a layered alumina/ferroelectric sample loaded in a cut-off waveguide. The second method (B-band) utilizes an open resonator (OR) technique. Theoretical and experimental results are presented.

  • Design of the Compact Band-Pass Filter Utilizing Dielectric Loaded
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: 37th European Microwave Conference, EUMC; Munich; Germany; 9 October 2007 through 12 October 2007. - 9782874870033 ; 2, s. 886-889
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A design of a compact Ku-band four pole band-pass filter is reported. The filter is based on twodual-mode dielectric loaded waveguide (WG) resonators providing a significant reduction of the sizesas compared to its single mode counterpart. Each resonator is comprised of a square shaped cut-offwaveguide loaded with a silica glass plate. The filter is realized using a quadruplet cell, which allowstwo symmetric transmission poles to be placed at an arbitrary distance from the pass-band edges. Thisis a welcome feature making this filter useful for both Tx and Rx duplexer channels. A number ofnumerical issues are addressed concerning the modelling using High Frequency Structure Simulator(HFSS). Experimental results are compared with the simulations validating the design approach.

  • Experimental characterization of the 3rd order nonlinearities in thin film parallel-plate ferroelectric varactors
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium Digest. - 0149-645X. - 1424406889 ; 2, s. 683-686
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 3rd order nonlinearities in parallel-plate ferroelectric varactors based on thin Ba0.25Sr0.75TiO3 epitaxial films are characterized in wide temperature range. Both, the generated 3rd order harmonic and 3rd order intermodulation products are measured experimentally. The 3rd harmonic IP3 at room temperature is measured to be 35dBm and is favorable as compared to semiconductor competitors. The good agreement between harmonic balance simulation and measured data indicate that the measured low frequency C-V is adequate for accurate design of nonlinear components.

  • Full wave analysis of coupled strip-slot guiding structures
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques. - 0018-9480 .- 1557-9670. ; 53:6( 1), s. 1904-1912
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the coupled strip-slot lines are modeled using hybrid mode analysis. Standard spectral-domain analysis is employed to solve the eigenvalue problem in multilayered media and a novel formulation is proposed to obtain strip and slot modal impedances. Comparisons with available published data are presented. The model is used to obtain scattering parameters of a bandpass filter with a novel topology. These scattering parameters are then compared with those obtained using rigorous Sonnet simulations, thereby confirming the reliability of the model.

  • Large area photo detector
  • 2011
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The invention discloses a photo detector with first and second groups of electrodes. The electrodes of each group are connected to a first common conductor for the group, and are located on a layer of photosensitive material. The electrodes are parallel to and interlaced with each other. The first common conductors are essentially plane, arranged at the same end of their group of electrodes, and arranged as upper and lower conductors parallel to and overlapping each other separated by a dielectric material, and form a signal electrode and a ground plane of a first microstrip line. The first microstrip line acts as a first combiner for currents induced in the electrodes of the two groups and as a matching network for the electrodes and for a load which can be connected to the photo detector

  • Low loss left-handed media using dielectric ring resonators
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: 38th European Microwave Conference, EuMC 2008; Amsterdam; Netherlands; 27 October 2008 through 31 October 2008. - 9782874870064 ; , s. 1418-1420
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A low loss left handed 1D media using thick film technology is proposed in this work. The design uses a rectangular cut off waveguide periodically loaded by high permittivity dielectric ring resonators. These are considered as a low loss replacement for the split-ring resonators (SRR), responsible for magnetic activity of the media. Simulations are made using eigen-mode solver of HFSS. There the periodic boundary conditions are utilized to emulate the effect of the infinite media. The analysis reveals the propagation of the backward waves below the cut off frequency of the WG indicating left handedness of the propagation media. Another pass-band with the forward wave exists below the cut off of the WG. It is shown that two first pass-bands can be linked so that continuous backward-to-forward transmission is observed.

  • LTCC compatible ferroelectric phase shifters
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium Digest. - 0149-645X. ; 1, s. 599-602
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two phase shifters with novel topologies are presented. The phase shifters are based on LTCC compatible ferroelectric films with er=200, and tand=0.04 at 10 GHz. A Ku-band phase shifter is designed to provide DC bias independent matching in the wide frequency range. It has microstrip design where ferroelectric film is used as a substrate and requires relatively low DC bias voltages. The phase shifter showed -15dB matching in 50% bandwidth and 15deg/dB figure of merit. In X-band phase shifter the ferroelectric film is deposited on the low permittivity substrate. Using such two layered substrate a loaded line phase shifter based on coplanar-plate varactors is realized. The varactors are included in the circuit ground and are connected with the microstrip using vias. This designed allows reduction of overall loss due to more efficient use of ferroelectric. The figure of merit of this phase shifter is 20deg/dB at 10 GHz

  • Open resonator technique for measuring multilayered dielectric plates
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques. - 0018-9480 .- 1557-9670. ; 53:9, s. 2908-2916
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A generalized formulation of an open resonator technique including multilayer dielectric plates is proposed. It is used for experimental characterization of the permittivity and loss tangent of one of the layers. An experimental measurement system is developed and used to measure the dielectric properties of high-permittivity ferroelectric films, which demonstrates the utility of the approach. The loss tangent of the layer studied is obtained with the analytical formula derived, which speeds the data processing procedure. It is experimentally shown that the air gap between the sample and the plate mirror may significantly reduce the accuracy of the open resonator technique. It is also shown that the formulation developed here provides the means to deal with the problems associated with the air gap.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium Digest. - 0149-645X. - 1424406889 ; 3, s. 2063-2066
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A resonance technique for on-wafer characterization of ferroelectric varactors at microwave frequencies is proposed and experimentally verified. The approach is targeted on accurate assessment of the varactors losses if traditional approaches using planar transmission lines can not be used. A number of varactors based on 0.55um thick BSTO film are measured using the proposed approach and results are compared to those obtained with the broadband reflection type measurement. It is demonstrated that the resonance technique is more accurate and reliable.

  • The double loop hysteresis in DC dependent dielectric permittivity of SrTiO3
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 92, s. 6165-6171
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experimental double loop hysteresis in dc field dependent dielectric permittivity in bulk single crystal SrTiO3 is reported. Small signal measurements of the permittivity are performed in the frequency range 0.5-1.5 GHz at temperatures below 77 K using electrically thin circular parallel-plate resonators. The dielectric permittivity is extracted form the measured resonant frequency. The double loop hysteresis may be caused by field induced local paraelectric/ferroelectric phase transitions, and/or switching (polarization reversal) in local opposing ferroelectric domains associated with symmetry breaking impurities/structural defects.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: 38th European Microwave Conference, EuMC 2008; Amsterdam; Netherlands; 27 October 2008 through 31 October 2008. - 9782874870064 ; , s. 1204-1206
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work we propose a novel millimetre-wave phase shifter targeted on thin ferroelectric film technology. Architecture of the phase shifter is proposed to use a dielectric rod waveguide with a periodic printed array of electrically small dipoles loaded with a ferroelectric varactor (pin diode, Schottky diode, etc.) with the function of control the phase of the propagating wave. The proposed architecture of the phase shifter is verified by measuring two prototypes, where the tuneable elements (ferroelectric varactor) are replaced by non-tuneable capacitors with 10 fF and 15 fF respectively. The measurements revealed a considerable phase shift and small insertion losses. It is demonstrated that the proposed periodic structure using the dielectric rod waveguide allows to fully realize a potential of known tuneable elements at millimetre-wavelengths.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity. - 1558-2515 .- 1051-8223. ; 17:2, s. 718-721
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The superconducting Quantum Interference Filter (SQIF) is a new type of superconducting device which has been recently proposed for highly sensitive magnetometers for absolute magnetic field measurements. It benefits of very high voltage-to-field response, which is, in contrast conventional dc SQUIDs, not periodical. The SQIF can also be used as a radiofrequency amplifier in a similar way as the dc SQUID that can operate in a gigahertz frequency range. We designed a series type of SQIF amplifier that is compatible to conventional YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO)technology on bicrystal substrates. We present analytical, numericaland scale modeling as well as first electrical measurementsresults at frequencies up to 10 GHz. The SQIF array consists of 50 loops with randomly distributed areas from 0.5 to 1.5 times of 3x30 m2. We also compared it to the regular array of conventional SQUIDs with the same loop areas. We have additional dc contacts to each 5-th SQUIDs and the SQIFs for control and comparison. Devices are fabricated using Josephson junctions with 3 m width formed in YBCO over 24/24 and 12/12 degrees grain boundaries in yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) bicrystal substrates.

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Technical Physics Letters. - : Pleiades Publishing Ltd. - 1090-6533 .- 1063-7850. ; 31:1, s. 68-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The properties of a multicoupled microstrip line (MSL) with a thin control ferroelectric layer have been analyzed in terms of a full-wave model based on the method of moments in spectral domain. The Q values for all fundamental modes and their contributions to MSL losses are determined. It is established that various fundamental modes in multicoupled MSLs are characterized by significantly different Q values. The proposed method has been applied to the analysis of characteristics of an MSL-based ferroelectric microwave phase shifter. The figure of merit F of the phase shifter has been calculated for each fundamental mode. The results of analysis lead to a conclusion that, by exciting a fixed mode characterized by the maximum Q value, it is possible to obtain an MSL-based phase shifter possessing the optimum F at a minimum necessary level of the control voltage. © 2005 Pleiades Publishing, Inc.
