  • Standardisering av värderingar. Personalutbildning inom den svenska konsumentkooperationen
  • 2001

  • Organizing Sustainable Development. From Diffusion to Translation
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Paper presented at the EGOS conference Organizational Praxis, Subtheme 9: Management towards Sustainability, at Helsinki School of Economics, Finland, 2nd-4th of July 2000.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Policy changes towards global sustainable development have important consequences for how these policies are organized. New and alternative models of organizing tend to emphasize indirect control rather than direct control and supervision. However, our understanding of their effects and consequences is not very elaborated. The purpose of this paper is to develop an understanding of specific characteristics and effects of organizing alternative environmental policies towards sustainable development. The paper is based on a field study of the latest attempt in Sweden to work towards sustainable development. In 1998, the Swedish government formulated a program for local investments aiming at positive environmental effects and increased employment rates. In this article, we have posed more general questions on how to understand and to theorize upon the organizing of sustainable development. We suggest to view the implementation of environmental policies towards sustainable development as a chain of translations. These translations highlight unintended consequences of the policies, e.g. the creation of a temporary linguistic community allowing local and global `time spaces' to merge.

  • What does the Dow Jones Sustainability Group Index really tell Us?
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Paper presented at the Business Strategy and the Environment Conference, September 18-19, 2000 at the University of Leeds.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quite often the Dow Jones Sustainability Group Index (DJSGI), which identifies and keeps tracks on the performance of the sustainable driven companies, is referred to as an evidence of that integration of economic, environmental and social considerations in company strategies and management gives increased shareholder values in return. For instance a search on the Internet for 'Dow Jones Sustainability' resulted in a good 1000 hits, e.g. on WBCSD, Deutche Telekom and US EPA. There are, however, no deeper studies carried out really determining the design of the sustainability index and how the devise affects the outcome. This paper has investigated the structure of the sustainability index and compered it with other sector indexes and funds i.e. 'Dow Jones Global Indexes'. The study shows that the sustainability index, to a higher degree, is focusing on the technology community and somewhat lesser on the financial and industrial sectors then the general Dow Jones index does. Moreover, the largest difference of these two indexes is the asymmetric distribution of company size. The market capitalisation of the sustainable group is found to be 2.5 times larger then corresponding average for the general index. Other comparisons show that technology sector companies and large multinational companies have higher growth of stock value; consequently; legitimate questions arise. Are we comparing Apples and Oranges? What comes first the 'Hen or the Egg'? This paper finally discusses if the DJSGI really steers companies towards sustainability and the problem of sectoralisation

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management. - : Wiley InterScience. - 1535-3958 .- 1535-3966. ; 17:2, s. 63-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The problematic and contestable nature of discourses on corporate social responsibility (CSR) has driven the commissioning of this special issue on discourses, narratives, and communication about CSR. While CSR may be seen as sharing normative goals with the concept of sustainable development, there are fundamental questions to be asked about the nature and purpose of CSR, how it has been constructed and framed, and whether it promotes the normative goals of sustainable development in order to effect change to the business-as-usual model. The teasing out of the different discourses of CSR has become an important theme in academic research in recent years. In this issue, that discourse is developed. The authors discover gaps between CSR as understood by civil society groups and radical non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the CSR norms promoted at corporate level. The latter fail to impact on business-as-usual, even though the same lan- guage may be used. The link between Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) reporting and market-value is explored; and CSR principles and actions promoted by business are cri- tiqued from the perspective of the norms of sustainable development, one conclusion being that the parameters of sustainable development as a concept need to be extended to include the dimension of culture.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management. - : Wiley InterScience. - 1535-3958 .- 1535-3966. ; 16:5, s. 237-249
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper draws attention to several corporate social responsibility (CSR) questions in developing countries. (1) Illustrations from, for example, South America and Africa, includ- ing African voices critical to foreign aid, show that societies are different in many respects. This implies different capacities of organizations and their managers to understand and address pressing CSR issues in different cultural contexts. (2) Weak institutional environ- ments, such as in developing countries, often harbor illicit fi nancial outfl ow from poor countries to rich ones. This strips developing nations of critical resources and contributes to failed states, a point hardly ever discussed in the CSR literature. We argue for corporate actions in areas such as enhancing capacity in detecting tax fraud, antitrust and the unveil- ing of corruption cases. Obviously, legislation is a task of politicians, governments and international governmental bodies. However, if business enterprises can ‘legally misuse’ the system, then the matter should be seen as a CSR issue also. There is thus an urgency for concerted efforts by the private sector, public sector and non-governmental organiza- tions to develop structures and institutions that contribute to social justice, environmental protection and poverty eradication.

  • Ingår i: Contemporary Research at Swedish Graduate School of Business. - Västerås : Mälardalens högskola och Örebro universitet. - 9789176686065 ; , s. 249-270
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper strives for a conceptualization of sustainability, design and contemporary consumption. By sketching out how effective production systems have created an abundance of products, the paper links this development to the aestheticization of society and an increased interest in design. In market economies characterized by profusion, corporations engage in activities filling their offerings with aura, aesthetics, symbols and meaning. In such lands of plenty, conspicuous consumption becomes a thoroughly expressive activity and highly problematic for actors with ambitions to design a sustainable future. Our conclusion is that sustainability must ultimately be seen as intertwined with social processes such as fashion, identity and identity construction.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Socialmedicinsk Tidskrift. - : Socialmedicinsk tidskrift. - 0037-833X. ; 96:3, s. 341-352
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Institutional entrepreneurship in an academic organisation : sustainability at Malardalen University
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation and Sustainable Development. - : Inderscience Publishers. - 1740-8822 .- 1740-8830. ; 3:3/4, s. 201-216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes and elaborates on a case of institutional entrepreneurship for sustainable development in higher education and research collaboration in a Swedish academic milieu. We argue, much in line with the contemporary international policy debate about climate change, that universities can and should have a leading role in producing new knowledge and innovation for the promotion of sustainable development. We consider that higher education and the whole university organisation, rather than just research, should be analysed regarding institutionalising sustainable development, which is not emphasised in the policy debate. In our conceptualisation of sustainable development, we argue that entrepreneurship and, more specifically, institutional entrepreneurship, can be used as an interesting normative and theoretical model. By drawing upon the concept of institutional entrepreneurship, we try to open up for the reflective exploration of three projects that illustrate the institutionalisation of sustainable development. While doing so, we identify the critical areas for further theoretical and empirical research from the perspective of institutional entrepreneurship.

  • 1999
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper illustrates how the idea of a national information infrastructure travels through the world. Once the idea has traveled from the United States to Europe and to Sweden it has been translated and localized into a Stockholm context. Based on interviews with city managers, observations at a panel debate, and on searches on the Internet, the study reconstructs the netting of the information infrastructure in Stockholm (IT net).

    • The impact work leading to the in-depth understanding of quadruple helix co-creation in social sciences and humanities is based on the ACCOMPLISSH project, that has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 693477. This paper is based on one of the reports written up there, shows illustrations of co-creation as discussed in focus group interviews of quadruple helix partners at 14 European universities and presents first-hand excerpts of the report. Our ambition is to rewrite the paper into an article publishable in peer-reviewed academic journals and based on previous studies published in other academic journals.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The meaning of acronyms such as `IT' or `TIME' is very wide including technologies related to tele- and datacom, information technology, broadband, media and entertainment. Once dealing with digitized information, technologies related to telecom and broadband are often quite abstract and non-tangible and difficult to represent within marketing communications. How are such technologies represented in communication efforts of major corporations marketing their IT products and services? This paper focus on how IT technologies are represented in increasingly social ways, infusing their materiality with anthropomorphous and cyborg qualities of body and soul. We study the discourse of print, television and radio ads of major corporations involved in current information and communication technologies such as Ericsson, Sony and Telia. The human body and how it functions to represent technology is a central concern, and we draw on recent work in marketing, photography, and management studies to situate bodily images within the marketing of the electronic economy. The paper ends with some speculations on the changing nature of representation in information technology ads, and offers some conclusions about the body as a basic element of communication about invisible products.

  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Paper accepted for presentation at IRNOP IV Conference Paradoxes of Project Collaboration in the Global Economy: Interdependence, Complexity and Ambiguity, 10-12 January 2000, Sydney, Australia..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organisations, as well as society in general, are organised along functional perspectives. Each function that serves members of a society has traditionally been taken care of by one state agency in each functional field. In the past, state agencies have improved sectors such as the social, educational and environmental fields of the industrialised society. Due to their initial success, these organisations have grown larger and have become permanent actors to serve society. However, over time new problems arise that cannot be dealt with by means of permanent organisations. Instead, projects and project-like organisations are created to deal with issues where permanent organisations tend to be less appropriate. On a societal level, the creating of environmental projects to deal with diffuse pollution problems is one example. On a company level, the organising of organisational development projects to deal with problems in the current organisational structure is another example. Our reasoning is that such problems and previously unorganised solutions need temporary projects to ensure successful implementation and real change. It is simply not possible to cover all present and future problems by means of permanent and administrative organisations. This paper takes the discussion further by examining the crucial organisational problems that projects of this type have to deal with. They are created with little or no support from traditional organisations, they have ambiguous goals, and are vulnerable. The implications of this paper are the following: from a practical perspective, we show how environmental and organisational renewal projects can be successfully organised as development projects instead of traditional projects. From a theoretical perspective, we argue it is fruitful to concentrate on certain aspects of project organising. By doing so, and by referring to the Scandinavian adapted institutionalism and translation sociology, this paper discusses the delimitation and formation of project organising by introducing the concepts of translation and transcription as vital components in the process of shaping and re-shaping this type of projects.

  • Translation and inscription in development projects : Understanding environmental and health care-related organizational change
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Organizational Change Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Ltd. - 0953-4814 .- 1758-7816. ; 22:5, s. 480-493
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to argue that the interface between projects is of particular interest when organizing development projects. It offers a theoretical discussion of translation and inscription phases, not only because they are important to the understanding of mobilizing action in development projects, but also because they are crucial in a chain of sequential projects that are organized as responses to new situations. Design/methodology/approach – The paper uses illustrations of development projects in public management in Sweden to discuss a fundamental organizing problem of projects: how project delimitation and formation take place. Findings – The paper has focused on organizational change and development projects regarding environmental and health care organization renewal projects. It has analyzed how such projects are organized and linked to context. Development problems and their solutions cannot be divided into a functional structure since they overlap and demand attention by a multitude of perspectives during translation. Research limitations/implications – It is theoretically interesting to highlight certain slices of the organizational reality in projects. The paper has chosen a project perspective and focus at the beginning and end of projects. In theoretical terms, it has chosen to call these phases translation and inscription. Practical implications – Projects are different compared with permanent organizations due to the existence of beginnings and endings. On the one hand, permanent organizations are normally “going concerns” where the start is back in history and the end is clouded in a distant future. On the other hand, in a project, translation and inscription phases are unavoidable as they are triggered by the specific conditions underlying beginnings and endings. Originality/value – Projects with clear boundary-overlapping character cannot be judged with concepts stemming from the methods of construction project management. In contrary, the paper argues that there are two other concepts that can better explain the special organizing problems invoked by the cases cited here: translation and inscription.
