  • Publishing Visualization Studies as Registered Reports: Expected Benefits and Researchers’ Attitudes
  • 2021
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: Registered Reports are publications in which study proposals are peer reviewed and pre-accepted before the study is ran. Their adoption in other disciplines has been found to promote research quality and save time and resources. Objectives: We offer a brief introduction to Registered Reports and their expected benefits for visualization research. We then report a survey of the visualization community on their attitudes towards Registered Reports. This survey takes the form of a quasi Registered Report, the first one presented at a visualization venue as far as we know. Method: We will run an online survey that will be open from the end of August until the day of the alt.VIS workshop. Results: Most respondents expressed interest in Registered Reports as an additional submission format. Junior researchers as well as researchers with prior experience of preregistration tended to be more inclined to adopt this format. However, qualitative feedback highlights several perceived drawbacks and worries about Registered Reports, such as low suitability for some types of research, and increased workload for reviewers and authors. Conclusion: While many respondents expressed interest in (and sometimes enthusiasm for) Registered Reports, many also voiced concerns that should be considered and discussed in the community. Reproducibility: All the material is available on osf.io/4nrma/.

  • Reducing Affective Responses to Surgical Images and Videos Through Stylization
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Computer graphics forum (Print). - : WILEY. - 0167-7055 .- 1467-8659. ; 39:1, s. 462-483
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the first empirical study on using colour manipulation and stylization to make surgery images/videos more palatable. While aversion to such material is natural, it limits many peoples ability to satisfy their curiosity, educate themselves and make informed decisions. We selected a diverse set of image processing techniques to test them both on surgeons and lay people. While colour manipulation techniques and many artistic methods were found unusable by surgeons, edge-preserving image smoothing yielded good results both for preserving information (as judged by surgeons) and reducing repulsiveness (as judged by lay people). We then conducted a second set of interview with surgeons to assess whether these methods could also be used on videos and derive good default parameters for information preservation. We provide extensive supplemental material at .

  • The Continued Prevalence of Dichotomous Inferences at CHI
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: CHI EA 19 EXTENDED ABSTRACTS: EXTENDED ABSTRACTS OF THE 2019 CHI CONFERENCE ON HUMAN FACTORS IN COMPUTING SYSTEMS. - New York, NY, USA : ASSOC COMPUTING MACHINERY. - 9781450359719
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dichotomous inference is the classification of statistical evidence as either sufficient or insufficient. It is most commonly done through null hypothesis significance testing (NHST). Although predominant, dichotomous inferences have proven to cause countless problems. Thus, an increasing number of methodologists have been urging researchers to recognize the continuous nature of statistical evidence and to ban dichotomous inferences. We wanted to see whether they have had any influence on CHI. Our analysis of CHI proceedings from the past nine years suggests that they have not.
