  • The MeteoMet project - metrology for meteorology: challenges and results
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Meteorological Applications. - : Wiley. - 1350-4827 .- 1469-8080. ; 22, s. 820-829
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study describes significant outcomes of the Metrology for Meteorology' project, MeteoMet, which is an attempt to bridge the meteorological and metrological communities. The concept of traceability, an idea used in both fields but with a subtle difference in meaning, is at the heart of the project. For meteorology, a traceable measurement is the one that can be traced back to a particular instrument, time and location. From a metrological perspective, traceability further implies that the measurement can be traced back to a primary realization of the quantity being measured in terms of the base units of the International System of Units, the SI. These two perspectives reflect long-standing differences in culture and practice and this project - and this study - represents only the first step towards better communication between the two communities. The 3 year MeteoMet project was funded by the European Metrology Research Program (EMRP) and involved 18 European National Metrological Institutes, 3 universities and 35 collaborating stakeholders including national meteorology organizations, research institutes, universities, associations and instrument companies. The project brought a metrological perspective to several long-standing measurement problems in meteorology and climatology, varying from conventional ground-based measurements to those made in the upper atmosphere. It included development and testing of novel instrumentation as well as improved calibration procedures and facilities, instrument intercomparison under realistic conditions and best practice dissemination. Additionally, the validation of historical temperature data series with respect to measurement uncertainties and a methodology for recalculation of the values were included.

  • Entrepreneurial passion : a theoretical framework for the study of emotion in entrepreneurship
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Frontiers of Entrepreneurship Research 2004. - : Babson College Center.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Principal TopicPassion has long been recognized as a central component of entrepreneurial motivation and success. Yet surprising little systematic theoretical or empirical work exists concerning the notion of passion and its influence on entrepreneurial activities. Passion has been viewed as both cognitive and emotional, as both a trait and a state, and many scholars do not distinguish between passion as an emotion and the consequences of such passion, such as working longer hours. Thus there is great lack of clarity in defining exactly what passion is, what it feels like, and its role in entrepreneurship. We build a conceptual model of emotion in entrepreneurship, drawing from a strong foundation in the psychological and sociological literatures. In this model, we separate the experience of emotion from the outcomes of such emotional experiences, and distinguish between the distal outcome of entrepreneurial effectiveness, which involves attainment of venture and individual goals, and the drivers of such effectiveness, including problem-solving, persistence, and absorption, which are behaviors that directly result from emotional experiences. Third, we distinguish between situation-specific and more enduring emotional experiences, and suggest that both sets of emotions impact entrepreneurial outcomes. For both episodic and enduring emotions, individuals have certain stable emotional tendencies (core affect), ventures have the ability to engender specific emotions due to their specific nature (affective qualities), and both of these combine to create the subconscious (attributed affect) and conscious (emotional meta-experience) emotional experiences. Since the current emotional state may differ from the more enduring state, this potential discrepancy between them is modeled. If such a discrepancy exists, the tension between the episodic emotional experience and the enduring one must be managed by the entrepreneur, through the process of emotional regulation. Results and ImplicationsBy developing the theoretical foundation for emotional influence in this domain, we enrich theory on entrepreneurial passion and provide concrete guidelines to spur entrepreneurial effectiveness. In particular we suggest how incorporating entrepreneurial emotion in models of entrepreneurship will shed light on how to better prepare nascent and early-stage entrepreneurs for the challenges that lie ahead of them, and how to enhance their own persistence and effectiveness.

  • A new challenge for meteorological measurements : The meteoMet project-Metrology for meteorology
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : AIP. - 0094-243X .- 1551-7616. - 9780735411784 ; , s. 1030-1035
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climate change and its consequences require immediate actions in order to safeguard the environment and economy in Europe and in the rest of world. Aiming to enhance data reliability and reduce uncertainties in climate observations, a joint research project called MeteoMet-Metrology for Meteorology started in October 2011 coordinated by the Italian Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica (INRiM). The project is focused on the traceability of measurements involved in climate change: surface and upper air measurements of temperature, pressure, humidity, wind speed and direction, solar irradiance and reciprocal influences between measurands. This project will provide the first definition at the European level of validated climate parameters with associated uncertainty budgets and novel criteria for interpretation of historical data series. The big challenge is the propagation of a metrological measurement perspective to meteorological observations. When such an approach will be adopted the requirement of reliable data and robust datasets over wide scales and long terms could be better met.

  • Measurement of Perception : A European Network "Measuring the Impossible"
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 14th International Congress of Metrology. - Paris, France : Bureau international des poids et mesures, BIPM. ; , s. 1-6
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The European 'Measuring the Impossible'  Network MINET promotes new research activities in measurement dependent on human perception and/or interpretation. This includes the perceived attributes of products and services, such as quality or desirability, and societal parameters such as security and well-being. The main achievements so far include on-line consortium databases, research repository; workshops, think tanks, study visits; training course and book. The MINET consortium aims at consensus about how 'generic' metrological issues:  Measurement concepts & terminology, Measurement techniques, Measurement uncertainty, Decision-making & impact assessment, can be applied specifically to the 'Measurement of Persons' in terms of 'Man as a Measurement Instrument' and 'Measuring Man'.
