  • Capturing processes in longitudinal multiple case studies
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-8501. ; 41:2, s. 235-246
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses and suggests a methodological approach to capture processes in multiple case studies. While single case studies may address processes in an inductive or abductive manner, multiple case studies entail a stronger need for analytical frameworks and methodological tools developed ex ante in order to maintain focus on the same phenomena across cases and over time. This is, however, difficult to pursue in studies that focus on processes. The aim of the paper is to suggest an approach to longitudinal multiple case studies. We use an example of an on-going multiple case study aiming at capturing the processes of strategizing in terms of how the networking of start-up companies interplays with their ideas of future network positions. The paper concludes by suggesting the use of a combination of narratives and network drawings. Network drawings can be instrumental in capturing the past, the present and the future at different points in time for the individual cases. Based on these descriptions, change patterns and how these evolve can be analyzed and compared across cases and over time.

  • Relationship development patterns of university-based start-ups
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: A Research Agenda for the Entrepreneurial University. ; , s. 207-228
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the present chapter, we focus on how start-ups become embedded in the university and industry context(s) in order to suggest a research agenda for a more systemic approach to university and industry actors when studying start-up development in entrepreneurial universities. More specifically, the story should not end in business formation but an entrepreneurial university also has roles in the further development of start-ups originating both from the university and industry. We base our suggested research agenda on a case study of the automotive and transport cluster in Western Sweden, which is established as both an academic context and an industry context. We relied both on secondary data about the case as such as well as primary data about the relationship development patterns of the 9 start-ups in the cluster. We identified 5 different patterns of how start-ups become embedded. Arguing that the development and success of university-based start-ups have to be understood in terms of how they embed in their context(s) entails several important implications for further studies connected to additional details of the development patterns, the roles universities play in the networking and embedding of start-ups and the design of collaborative platforms for collaboration between various actors.

  • Process validation: Coping with three dilemmas in process-based single case research
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing. - 0885-8624. ; 33:4, s. 539-549
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - Recent research suggests that the interest in process-based single-case studies is increasing in business-to-business (B2B) marketing. This paper aims to discuss research validity issues and dilemmas encountered by process-based single-case researchers in B2B marketing. Design/methodology/approach - This is a methodology paper that builds on an integration of experiences, ideas and literature. Findings - In the paper, three dilemmas are suggested that researchers need to deal with in process-based single-case research. These relate to the casing process: crafting the case, communicating the case and describing the process of the study. Furthermore, process validation is suggested as a research quality concept concerned with how these dilemmas are handled. Research limitations implications - Based on the notion of process validation, the authors provide suggestions for how casing, as a process-based single-case approach, can be conveyed and advanced in its own right. Practical implications - This study can be used to convey insights that can help new and experienced researchers in conducting single-case studies in B2B. Originality/value - Coping with issues of research quality in B2B marketing is of relevance to researchers dealing with process-based single-case research and process validation issues, as well as to journal reviewers evaluating the qualities of process-based single-case research.

  • The transport service triad: a key unit of analysis
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing. - 0885-8624. ; 34:1, s. 253-266
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose The purpose of the paper is to identify and discuss the transport service triad (TST) as a key unit of analysis to understand the operations and conditions for change in freight transport systems at the micro level, i.e. at the level of analysis where business decisions and change interaction take place. Design/methodology/approach The theoretical framing is rooted in the IMP approach and in the literature on triads. A case study approach is used to illustrate the TST by analyzing a case involving a wholesaler of installation products, tools and supplies, a main construction company and a transport service provider. Findings The paper shows how the connections between the business relationships in the TST, influenced by connections to relationships outside the triad, impact on the efficiency in freight transport. The paper illustrates how analysis of TSTs can be applied in micro-level studies of change in freight transport systems and in supply networks. Research limitations/implications The triadic approach is instrumental to understand change in the transport system because it includes all relevant parties and relationships of concern, as well as the logic framing of their actions. However, while arguing that TSTs are generic to their nature, each TST is unique and needs to be identified and analyzed in its specific context. Practical implications The suggested framework may contribute to an understanding of the embeddedness of transport services in supply/business networks. The framework may support the development of new ways of operating and creating value for customers and offering sustainable transport solutions. Originality/value From the transport policy makers’ perspective, micro-level analysis is important to understand behavioral adjustments to new policies

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 25th IPSERA Conference, Dortmund, March 20-23, 2016..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Technology alone will not be sufficient to cope with emission reduction challenges. Transport procurement requires attention for individual firms as well as the transport industry to tackle environmental challenges. The aim of this paper is to identify practice, perceptions and outlook of transport buyers in order to present a research agenda that informs the advancement of current practice, on the basis of surveys, capturing practice among Swedish transport buyers. The direction for future research comprise levels of analysis ranging from the service level to industry-level, and suggest a mixed-method, wherein surveys are combined with in-depth case studies and workshops.

  • BUSINESS MODELS: CHANGE OF SCOPE AND SCOPE OF CHANGE
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 IMP Conference in Atlanta. ; , s. 19-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The literature on business models has grown in recent years following new Internet-based business opportunities. Over time, the suggested conceptualisations of business models have also become more general. In this paper we aim at scrutinising the business model literature in relation to the industrial network approach in order to (1) point at problems inherent in current conceptualisations, and (2) suggest a framework that supports analysis of change or development of business models in view of network embeddedness. When problems inherent in current conceptualisations are concerned we discuss three issues; (1) their focus on the firm as the main unit of analysis, (2) the mixing of theoretical assumptions, and (3) their static nature. Moreover, most current conceptualisations set the focus on the selling firm’s perspective and thus focus on making and selling but do not include buying and using. As a result, network level aspects of business models are rare.In contrast to firm-centred approaches suggested by other authors, we suggest a focus on the ‘offering’ as the focal element of business model analysis. We identify three categories of change with regard to offerings and suggest an approach to analyse the consequences of such changes in terms of emerging business models.

  • BUSINESS MODELS FOR TRUCKS
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: NOFOMA 2013. ; , s. 16-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The aim of the paper is to analyse alternative business models for trucks and the transport services that they render.Design/methodology/approach – The business model framework that we rely on is based on Mason and Spring (2011) and encompasses three related elements: market offering, technology and network architecture. The paper is mainly conceptual but draws on other, empirical, studies.Findings – We identify three types of market offerings: product based, combined and service based and discuss the principal business models that these offerings can be based on.Research limitations/implications (if applicable) – The paper contributes to the literature on business models for trucks and transport services by considering the various ways by which resources and activities can be divided among actors. The framework presented has a broader scope of application and is thus not limited to trucks and transport services.Practical implications – The paper provides possible implications for truck manufacturers, fleet owners, transport service providers and truck operators as a consequence of the alternative business models suggested.Social implications – New business models for trucks and transport services may change the conditions and incentives in ways that better tackle the environmental consequences of transport. Changing cost, risk and incentive structures, resource sharing and innovation are key aspects to consider in this regard.Originality/value – The paper opens up for new perspectives on the organising of activities and resources among the actors involved in transport.

  • Conceptualizing business models in industrial networks
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-8501. ; 60, s. 196-203
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is concerned with business model conceptualizations and outlines a framework for their analysis in industrial networks. A literature review suggests that there is a broad range of current conceptualizations of business models. Analyzing them as they pertain to interaction, business relationships, and industrial networks reveals two main explanations for their differences: first, they clearly rely on different basic theoretical assumptions, and second, they seem to address two types of business models. We refer to these as firm-centric and network-embedded business models. Based on this distinction, a scheme of analysis at the levels of the firm, relationship and network is suggested for the two types of business models. Business models are challenging from an analytical as well as managerial perspective. Further research on emerging network-embedded business models is suggested

  • Interdependence in supply chains and projects in construction
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Supply Chain Management. - : Emerald. - 1359-8546. ; 15:5, s. 385-393
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The aim of this paper is to inquire into the management of construction supply chains by directing attention toward the different types of interdependencies that exist in such chains and in construction projects. Design/methodology/approach: The paper is developed as part of two ongoing research projects on supply chain management (SCM) in construction. A case study approach is used for illustrating the production and subsequent delivery and installation of plasterboards to a specific construction project. This description reveals extensive coordination among a number of companies and features interesting examples of the consequences of the interdependencies identified. Findings: The paper concludes that the strong emphasis on coordination of sequential interdependence within individual supply chains does not fit with the complex interdependencies present in and among supply chains and projects in construction. In addition to sequential interdependence it describes and illustrates pooled interdependence based on joint resource utilisation, reciprocal interdependence among activities undertaken at the construction site, and interdependence owing to synchronisation of many supply chains in relation to each and every construction project. The combined effects of these interdependencies challenge traditional SCM recommendations, such as moving activities from the site to the factory. Originality/value: The main theoretical argument put forward in this paper is that the application of SCM models developed for other industrial contexts such as the automotive industry, are problematic to use in the construction industry. This is because these models emphasise integration of activities that are subject mainly to sequential interdependencies while the pattern of interdependence is very different in construction. A main implication for practice is that focusing on better planning in order to deal with activities that are mainly subject to sequential interdependence, is insufficient. The reciprocal interdependencies in construction require more frequent and direct interaction among the involved actors to enable mutual adjustments among the firms whose activities and resource use need to be coordinated. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

  • Transportation as a loosely coupled system: a fundamental challenge for sustainable freight transportation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sustainable Transportation. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1556-8318 .- 1556-8334. ; 17:7, s. 804-814
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In view of the pressing need to reduce the negative environmental impact of freight transportation we argue that it is essential to take account of the organization of the freight transportation system when considering how to address various individual activities and parts of the system. To support a transition to a more sustainable freight transportation system this paper examines the way in which different parts of the system interact and the way this can impact the scope for profound change. Taking loosely coupled systems (Weick, 1976) as a starting point, we scrutinize the couplings within and between three system layers of the freight transportation system: the supply chain layer, the transportation layer, and the infrastructure layer. In addition, we address two interfaces connecting these layers: the market for transportation services, and the traffic using the infrastructure. We find that tight couplings dominate in the supply chain and infrastructure layers and that these couplings depend on loose couplings in the transportation layer and the two interfaces. The pattern of couplings identified in the freight transportation system can explain several positive outcomes, such as flexibility and efficiency. But there are also major negative aspects of the loosely coupled nature of the system that create resistance to change and present a barrier in the drive for increased sustainability. The paper concludes that the identified couplings and system features have important implications for policies aiming to change the freight transportation system in ways that lead to significant reduction in the reliance on oil.

  • The importance of resource interaction in strategies for managing supply chain disruptions
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0148-2963. ; 154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The turbulent business environment highlights the need for strategies for mitigating, responding to, and recovering from (that is, managing) supply chain disruptions. Resources are central in these strategies but remain unspecified in the literature. This paper shows how the resource interaction approach (RIA) can help under-standing resources in this setting by acknowledging their interactive and networked nature. Based on a con-ceptual discussion that compares key assumptions within the supply chain risk management (SCRM) and supply chain risk resilience (SCRes) literatures with the RIA, we propose an alternative approach to strategies for managing supply chain disruptions. We challenge the SCRM and SCRes literatures by emphasizing interdepen-dence (as opposed to independence) and pointing to relationships as key resources in strategies for managing supply chain disruptions. Collaboration relying on an interplay between temporary and permanent organizing is suggested as a starting point instead of being just one of several alternative strategies.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 1478-4092. ; 22:4, s. 247-249
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Case studies are frequently adopted in purchasing and supply management studies, but the field would benefit from more diversified approaches to this method of scientific inquiry. The inherently flexible case study approach allows for benefiting from the often serendipitous features and non-linear, interactive patterns of scientific work. We urge scholars to be open about their research paths and pay more attention on reflection and learning aspects of case studies. Furthermore, problematisation rather than gap-spotting can serve as a fruitful grounding for formulation of research questions. The academic community can contribute to diversity by supporting and legitimizing different approaches to case studies, as long as these approaches are well grounded and argued for.

  • Comment on “Taking the leap from dyads to triads: Buyer–supplier relationships in supply networks” by Choi and Wu: To leap or not to leap: Triads as arbitrary subsets of networks of connected dyads
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 1478-4092. ; 15:4, s. 267-268
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In their paper, Choi and Wu convincingly argue that owing to its focus on dyads, research in the supply chain management area fails to capture the complex dynamics of supply networks. Their solution to this problem is to replace the focus on dyads with a focus on triads. While it is easy to agree with Choi and Wu concerning the limitation of dyadic analyses in relation to understanding network processes, substituting triads for dyads may not be a viable alternative. Choi and Wu's claim that "... it is the triad that captures the basic essence of a network and allows us to study the behaviour of a network" (p. 3) opens up to questions regarding definitions of "a network" and views regarding how an understanding of network dynamics can be further developed. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd.
