  • Kalejdoskopiska rum : Diskurs, materialitet och praktik i den decentraliserade psykiatriska vården
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • During the period 1967-1995, Swedish mental healthcare underwent a complete re-organisation, starting with county councils taking over responsibility for mental healthcare from the state. Asylums were then phased out and mental health care moved closer to patients. The Mental Health Reform of 1995 completed this decentralisation and put the emphasis on an independent and integrated life as a citizen in society and the idea of a dwelling of one’s own. This thesis describes and analyses spatial aspects of decentralised mental healthcare in Sweden, focusing on the decentralisation discourse regarding organisation, localisation, patient care and working methods behind decentralisation and its spatial performance. A case study of decentralised mental healthcare in Nacka, a Stockholm suburb, between 1958-1999 examines in particular the emerging decentralisation discourse 1958-1973, The Nacka Project 1974-1980 (one of the first examples of community care in Sweden), psychiatry in Nacka 1980-1994 and the official report Welfare and Freedom of Choice from 1995. The methods used include studies of documents, interviews, visual and architectural drawing analysis. The theoretical point of departure for the analysis is a post-structural heterogeneous concept of space where spatial materiality and discursiveness are looked upon as intertwined.    The result shows that the re-organisation of mental healthcare brought about a substantial spatial transformation. Normalisation of patients’ lives involved integration into society and support for independent living. The local environment was the main trope for the early stage of decentralised mental healthcare, but the notion of a dwelling of one’s own became the important trajectory to an independent life after 1995. The idea of the patient is challenged by the independence discourse, which could be said to contain an idea of the ‘non-patient’. Overall, it can be concluded that spatial organisations of the built environment are never value-free or neutral. They reflect, enable and constrain power relations in a society and material space can contribute to the power of one group at the expense of another. Furthermore, the results of the spatialities, or the meanings, cannot be predicted. It is therefore crucial to distinguish power in all its configurations and scales and to keep negotiations alive, especially within the field of mental healthcare, but also in the care sector as a whole and in other societal institutions where policies buildings and built environment interact with user practices. This kaleidoscopic perspective can be used for examining complexities in the past and present and for encouraging future potentialities in the process of making/enacting spatial relations.

  • Sinnenas musik : En exkursion i sex satser
  • 2023

  • A conversation on education
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Routledge Research Companion to Landscape Architecture. - : Routledge. ; , s. 324-334
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Landscape architecture today is becoming increasingly professionalized as a quasi-global profession—not least through the successful expansion of academic research efforts within the discipline. This includes the kinds of effort to which this volume as a whole contributes, and this chapter broadens our understanding of the institutional structures within which we operate. Indeed, education may be one of the most important realms for the engagement and transmission of knowledge that moves back and forth and connects practice and research in intricate ways—with the added benefit that education remains a dialogical and personal setting for exchange, not least in studio-driven design programmes. We therefore have asked significant educators from Landscape Architecture programmes in Europe and North America to reflect on the tensions and challenges the profession currently faces, and on what we can do to prepare new generations of landscape architects who are now part of the educational system or will be so in the future. Moreover, we wished to inspire a discussion of how the aesthetic and ethical dimensions of landscape architecture potentially impact on the discipline, and of the role they should play in future landscape architecture education.

  • Artistic research: A subject overview 2014
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Artistic research Yearbook 2015 - From Arts college to university. Swedish Research Council. - 9789173072991 ; , s. 20-27
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Artistic research refers to research in the artistic field, a faculty area with a broad spectrum of exploratory practices such as visual art, fine art, photography, music, theatre, dance, choreography, performance, circus, architecture, design (including product design, interaction design, participative design, visual communication and so on), textile art, applied art, film, moving images, audiovisual media, literature/literary composition and curatorial practices. Artistic research is rooted in art as a creative form of knowledge and an exploratory practice. Closely related terms include artistic practice-based or practice-driven research, research through art and art-based research. The research is conducted through artistic work, supported by investigative methods and the formation of theories, all of which may also be drawn from other areas of research. The purpose is often to highlight artistic production and knowledge processes, questions pertaining to the expression of the art, its terms and sensory, narrative and performative aspects of art. The research involves contextualising artistic projects, developing research methods and theories, and interacting with materials, history and society. The focus of the research usually transcends these subject boundaries, either artistically or thematically, with the field being shaped not only by the specifics, traditions and courses of the various art forms, but also by exchanges and ongoing hybridisation. The research methods tend to be action-oriented, performative and interactive with artefacts and the surroundings. The investigative work often uses multimodal or multimedia forms of representation, documentation, communication and presentation – objects, exhibitions, concerts, performances, films, sound recordings, literary works, materials, art objects, urban spaces, text, etc. – which form a key part of research processes and of the presentation, publication and dissemination of research results.Artistic research and postgraduate education at Swedish academic institutions emerged in the 1990s and really broke through in around 2000, with a specific artistic research doctorate emerging in 2010. Overall, Swedish artistic research holds a very strong position internationally and has a relatively long research tradition. The social relevance of artistic research has so far been relatively overlooked. In today’s knowledge society, artistic endeavours and forms of communication play an active and necessary role in holding up contemporary phenomena for development and critical examination through their practice-related perspective and opportunities for interpretation.

  • Key urban projects: Local-regional planning tools for fragile urban landscapes
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: World in Denmark 2014: Nordic encounters. Travelling ideas about open space design and planning.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden, cities are promoted as drivers of economic growth and solutions for decreased climatic influence, resulting in a dominant focus on development of large cities in the planning debate and sustainability discourse. As discussed by Harvey (2006), Massey (2007) and Tietjen (2011), this increases differences between growing and declining cities and regions, and escalates uneven geographic development. The process produces fragile urban landscapes, i.e. local situations short of resources, skills and mandates to handle change and deal with in-lock of sense-making structures, thereby concealing actual site specific possibilities and the potential of development of small towns and rural areas. This renders the need for new relevant planning tools with onset in a relational perspective on space (Harvey 2006, Massey 2007), urban ecologies (Guattari 1989, Banham 1971) and design-based, proformative approaches (Solà Morales 2008, Bunschoten 2001, Cuff & Sherman 2011). This article argues for key urban projects as a relational, place-specific, operative planning tool that can open and lock urban transformation, secure and guide implementation and reveal strategies to develop fragile urban landscapes, with ability to: handle centre-periphery and urban-rural as dynamic contingencies; combine the capacity of different urban ecologies; relate the formation of urban landscapes to different scales; optimise combinatory potentials of local-regional resources; secure forms of operative collaboration; trigger critical negotiations; and integrate spatial implementation to the planning process. These abilities are tested through design-based research-methodology with onset from works in progress in five Swedish contexts of practice that outline a spectrum of important characteristics of fragile urban landscapes.Key Urban Projects are identified and developed through a mapping process iterating between identification of specific issues and the outline of their relevant contours, a process that both visualize and establish assemblages (DeLanda 2006). Key Projects gain their potential through stepwise change of the existing material landscape and its urban ecologies.

  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Established characteristics on artistic research have mainly focused on art's being sensuously experienced, expressed and reflected, but are now increasingly also linked to its sociopolitical and intersubjective-material agency, where art can act quickly to provoke or confirm established modes of thinking, making and acting in society and global economy. The article is grounded in the survey of artistic research conducted 2014 by the Committee for Artistic Research of the Swedish Research Council. It addresses structural aspects, tendencies and challenges in the artistic research domain involving its shifting disciplinary boundaries and cross-disciplinary thematic, changes over time, strengths in research methods and modes of communication, and contacts with other research fields.
