- This dissertation analyses historical-cultural change in Sweden during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The study focuses on historical narratives concerning the eighteenth-century epoch called the Age of Liberty and the subsequent reign of Gustav III. The overarching aim has been to study these narratives within a Swedish national historical culture from the 1870s to the 1990s. Three different arenas are examined in which history has been mediated in society: the historical research arena, the history textbook arena and history-mediating texts published in the press, what is here referred to as the press arena. The dissertation analyses the relationship between the mediation within these arenas, how this relationship has changed over time, and how they have taken part in influencing the overall image of the Age of Liberty and Gustav III's reign. The theoretical framework is largely based on history didactical perspectives concerning historical culture and the mediation of history. A two-pronged analytical method has been applied consisting of a hermeneutic analysis of mediation and a narrative analysis.This study shows that the three arenas are the most homogeneous in relation to each other during the period from the 1870s up until the 1920s. The historical culture is dominated by two main narratives during this period. One is a conservative, royalistic state idealist narrative, where the Age of Liberty functions as a cautionary tale about the dangers of party rule and a weak monarchy. The other narrative is a prodemocratic anti-Gustavian narrative, originating from the works of Anders Fryxell. However, this narrative is absent from the textbook arena, where the state idealist narrative is completely dominant. But overall, there is high level of temporal consistency between the three arenas during this time. This changes from the 1920s onwards, when the arenas drift apart and become more heterogeneous in relation to each other. As the arenas become more genre-specific, their roles as platforms for history mediation consequently begin to diverge. Which arena narratives are conveyed in, gradually attains greater importance for the historical-cultural communication.From the 1960s onwards, a Lagerrothian pro-parliamentary, prodemocratic narrative, which primarily originates from the research arena, becomes prominent in textbooks and press, but not as prominent in historical research. In this narrative, the Age of Liberty is presented as the precursor of the sound democratic, parliamentary system known in contemporary times, with people's rule, social equality, and without royal interference. The reign of Gustav III is described as an obstacle standing in the path of desirable social and political development. The narrative consolidates democratic ideals in its contemporary context by highlighting parliamentary and democratic traditions in the nation’s history. By the end of the twentieth century, the Lagerrothian narrative dominates both the textbook arena and the press arena. The shift from one dominant narrative to another suggests that the political applicability of research narratives in different times has a strong impact on historical cultural change within the framework of the nation. The study also shows that the most dominant narrative has not shifted chronologically from an old narrative to a newer one. Rather, the shift has been from one dominant narrative direction to another, while both have been mediated simultaneously for decades. It is concluded in the study that the view of a “lag” between historical research and other arenas must be nuanced and placed in the context of specific historical narratives.

- In this chapter, we discuss curation as a concept and practices of curating in relation to libraries, archives, and museums. The concept of curating collections may seem primarily connected to museums and exhibitions, especially as it invokes the practice of selecting and presenting objects to the public. However, traditional notions of curation also involve what happens with collection items before they reach the public (if anything). Thus, we distinguish between two senses of curation here, referring to the caretaker curator and the exhibition curator as broad typologies that help us to see what professionals in libraries, archives, and museums actually do with collections. The chapter presents discussions on the development of curating practices across the three sectors, connecting historical strands with current developments. Not least, we discuss how digitalization and the so-called “participatory turn” have changed and challenged practices of curation.

- Archive is a highly ambiguous word, meaning different things for different people, in society at large as well as in more scholarly and theoretical contexts. Already within the sphere of archival institutions where people work as archivists, the term archive(s) has at least three meanings. The first one – also called fonds – follows the principle of provenance that has dominated since the late nineteenth century: a delineated group of records created or received by a specific creator and kept together afterwards. A second, and older, meaning is a concrete place, a repository – a building or room – that contain archives in the first meaning Thirdly, the archive can also denote organisations, such as the National Archives, which might hold several archives-as-repositories and thousands of archives-as-fonds. However, within a larger cultural field, the term archive has further connotations. It is used metaphorically, as well as more concretely for gatherings of remaining stuff that also contain published books, art and other kinds of objects. In academia outside the field of archival science, there is a corresponding tendency to use wider notions of the archive, especially in the general humanities following the tradition of the so-called archival turn.

- In this book, ideas and practices on appraisal in Swedish state archives c. 1970–2010 are analysed. What records has been kept, why, and for whom? How has the archival sphere been influenced by overall societal ideas on heritage and memory? The relative importance of legal and institutional frameworks is also analysed, since laws heavily regulate archives in the Swedish public sector. The Swedish Archives Act of 1990 emphasises that the “research interest” has to be accounted for when deciding what to preserve, and it adds that the state archives are part of the “national heritage”. How is this implemented in actual appraisal practises? It is shown that appraisal in Sweden is generally pragmatic and – in a Schellenbergian tradition – rests on a presumption (most often not articulated) that it is possible to foresee the desires of future users.

- By analysing the regulating mechanisms of state subsidies to Swedish institutions generally considered mediating “popular education” during the twentieth century, it is argued that a tension has been developed between two parallel notions of popular education. A narrower ideal popular education—emphasising non-formality and independence—has been discursively nurtured along with a broader organisational popular education, denoting the de facto institutions that have received government funding, primarily the folk high schools and study associations. It is argued that the organisational popular education is a reality in itself, spanning over border zones between, for example, non-formal and formal education. Furthermore, an argument against using “popular education” as an analytical concept is put forth, since it is overly contested. Rather, it is promoted as a discursive construct that has formed real organisational structures with their own logic, which cannot be denoted by words such as non-formal adult education.

- A common feature of libraries, archives, and museums (LAMs) is that they maintain and develop collections. However, the content of the respective collections has changed and broadened over time. Public libraries increasingly deal with other media than books. Pictures and sound recordings have been incorporated more and more into archival collections. Museums have increasingly prioritized intangible cultural heritage. Furthermore, while LAMs have historically been associated with their collections, they have also come to encompass more than just their collections – for example, the use of dioramas and reconstructions in museums and the increased use of workshops, makerspaces, public debates, and other kinds of events in libraries. Key questions to be addressed are: In what ways and to what degree are modern-day LAMs constituted by their collections, and to what degree by other activities and media?
