    • Although there is a documented preference for daylighting over artificial electric lighting indoors, there are comparatively few investigations of behaviour and perception in indoor day-lit spaces at high latitudes during winter. We report a pilot study designed to examine the effects of static artificial lighting conditions (ALC) and dynamic daylighting conditions (DLC) on the behaviour and perception of two groups of participants. Each group (n = 9 for ALC and n = 8 for DLC) experienced one of the two conditions for three consecutive days, from sunrise to sunset. The main results of this study show the following: indoor light exposure in February in Stockholm can be maintained over 1000 lx only with daylight for most of the working day, a value similar to outdoor workers’ exposure in Scandinavia; these values can be over the recommended Melanopic Equivalent Daylight Illuminance threshold; and this exposure reduces sleepiness and increases amount of activity compared to a static artificial lighting condition. Mood and feeling of time passing are also affected, but we do not exactly know by which variable, either personal or group dynamics, view or variation of the lighting exposure. The small sample size does not support inferential statistics; however, these significant effects might be large enough to be of importance in practice. From a sustainability point of view, daylighting can benefit energy saving strategies and well-being, even in the Scandinavian winter.

    • AIC – MIDTERM MEETING 2011, ZURICH – INTERACTION OF COLOUR & LIGHT IN THE ARTS AND SCIENCES – ABSTRACTShort abstract: Light focusing on design in society and working lifeThe objective of the project is to study and analyse Design approaches and methods in complex situations, such as public and urban settings and furthermore territorial development strategy, thus exploring the possibilities of creating light and colour solutions that take into account both function, ergonomics, psychological and emotional aspects in public surroundings. It also aims to highlight the design process as a possible methodology for product and service development.The project stepped out from an initiative launched by the Swedish Ministry ofCulture, to encourage the development and spread of design within the country and was the premise to the ongoing research LCS-light, colour and space.The project made use of a design methodology named ITK - Identity Tool Kit -,in a completely new context, and also of models of the selected locations. It further involved various groups of people in the process, where the figure of the designer wasseen as the central figure within teams made up by students, artists, professionals, political representatives and businessmen cooperating inside an extended network.A “Light Year” was set up on the basis of a series of considerations spreading overseveral domains implied in Design discipline, where a knowledge platform was builtand design methods were studied. Throughout the course of the Light Year several communication, technical, artistic and educational events including workshops, conferences and other temporary or permanent initiatives were implemented. Then full scale models in the territory followed.Examining the final results of this broad project several positive facts indicate thatthe main goal of the project, of moving beyond light and colour design and showing the usefulness of design and design method so that design is perceived to be essential for everyone in work and at leisure, and, as well, knowingly work with design and business development and strategic approach, was achieved.The purpose of the Light year, of clarifying the value of design in everyday life, wasrewarded by the National design prize, and by practical issues of both permanent and temporary events such as light festivals, installations, urban lighting and urban plans, and the creation of new work places.

  • Energy Savings by Using Daylight for Basic Urban Shapes : With a Case Study of Three Different Street Types

    • During winter the sun is in short supply. But research at KTH shows that solar radiation can be facilitated while energy consumption for lighting is reduced. This provided that the buildings are appropriately designed. But, unfortunately, the sunlight is often not taken into account and the results are the opposite.The energy savings depend on good town planning where the daylight is accessible for longer periods of time during the day, both indoors and outdoors. Then, the periods of use for electric light will decrease. This research is one of the first studies which evaluate the savings in energy with electric lighting due to the use of daylight in urban planning. Three different patterns for street layouts are evaluated and discussed in this report. For example, with straight streets it is possible to save approximately 11 % of the electric energy for the exterior lighting compared to a bending street during twilight. However, it is possible to improve the daylight distribution with geometrical adjustments even along bending streets. Varying the height of the building along the street front and adding openings between the buildings can make for good daylight distribution, like in the strategic straight line format. The energy efficiency of the bending streets can be improved so the loss in energy efficiency compared to a straight street can be reduced from 11 % to 4 %, in a specific case. The energy savings are not so great that they alone can justify a specific street type. A number of other factors must also be considered, such as architectural style, uniformity and the building system. A long-term goal is practical guidelines for “better” geometry in urban design, taking into consideration the sun and daylight. The construction cost is not higher in such geometries than in conventional designs, since daylight is free. Therefore daylight can open up for new types of settlements with advantages as more space with more outlooks.

    • Employees in an eye hospital spend many hours in semidarkness or darkness performing visually demanding activities that can cause fatigue and eye strain. As preparation for the planning of a new eye hospital, this project was initiated in order to produce knowledge of how to improve lighting in examination rooms. Current light conditions at S:t Erik Eye Hospital were assessed including questionnaires to employees/patients, and measurements of luminance, space analyses and energy consumption. Visits to other prominent eye hospitals and a literature review were performed. The questionnaires revealed that eyestrain problems were common in eye care professionals, especially in women. Working in dark rooms increased the subjective feeling of fatigue. Many, but not all, lacked daylight. The general lighting system was often insufficient with poor light distribution, shadows, and a colour temperature that in general was too low. Improvements included possibilities to regulate inflow of daylight, installation of remote controls, and timing and level of adaptation to different light levels. These improvements have been tested in a real scale installation that used the latest technology in terms of artificial lighting, a lighting control systems and a novel solution to control daylight. Five different light scenarios were preinstalled and evaluated by professionals and patients. A majority reported an improvement compared with traditional solutions. Current and actual energy consumption was monitored. Simulations of future consumption points to a possible energy reduction by 50 %, using new lighting technology, daylight and optimal room design. With improved logistics, new buildings and new work organization, energy savings can be even higher, around 70 %.
