  • Food Related Activities and Food Intake in Everyday Life among People with Intellectual Disabilities
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis was to study food, eating and meals in the everyday life of 32 women and men with intellectual disabilities (IDs) who require varying levels of supervision. They lived in supported living (rather independently) or group homes in community-based home-like settings. Observations during 3 days, assisted food records and anthropometric measurements were used to collect data. Dietary intake on the group level showed a varied diet and sufficient intake of all micronutrients, but a low dietary fibre intake. On the individual level, inadequate intake of micronutrients was observed, with many participants being obese, overweight or underweight. Everyday support with food, eating and meals was seen in four praxis: foodwork by oneself for oneself, foodwork in co-operation, foodwork disciplined by staff and foodwork by staff. These four practices resulted in large variations in dietary intake. The first praxis entailed more convenience food and less vitamins, the second and third, more fresh ingredients and high energy intake, and the fourth, low energy intake but rather high intake of vitamins. Sharing of meals was least common in supported living and more common in group homes and daily activity centres. The participants’ social eating spheres consisted mostly of other people with ID and staff members, and seldom other people. Whereas some preferred solitary eating, many participants considered eating together as important, but required staff support in establishing commensality. However, disturbing behaviour, as determined by the staff, could result in solitary eating. In conclusion, supporting the group rather than the individual sometimes created less favourable dietary, eating and meal outcomes. This problem needs to be addressed in order to establish food security at the individual level. In addition, actions should be taken to ensure that people with intellectual disabilities receive sufficient support to meet their individual needs and aspirations.

  • Developing a pragmatic evaluation of ICTs for older adults with cognitive impairment at scale : the IN LIFE experience
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Universal Access in the Information Society. - Heidelberg, Germany : Springer. - 1615-5289 .- 1615-5297. ; 21:1, s. 1-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Implementing information and communications technology (ICT) at scale requires evaluation processes to capture the impacton users as well as the infrastructure into which it is being introduced. For older adults living with cognitive impairment, thisrequires evaluation that can accommodate diferent levels of cognitive impairment, alongside input from family and formalcaregivers, plus stakeholder organisations. The European Horizon 2020 project INdependent LIving support Functions forthe Elderly (IN LIFE) set out to integrate 17 technologies into a single digital platform for older people living with cognitive impairment plus their families, care providers and stakeholders. The IN LIFE evaluation took place across six nationalpilot sites to examine a number of variables including impact on the users, user acceptance of the individual services andthe overall platform, plus the economic case for the IN LIFE platform. The results confrmed the interest and need amongolder adults, family caregivers, formal caregivers and stakeholders, for information and communications technology (ICT).Relative to the baseline, quality of life improved and cognition stabilised; however, there was an overall reluctance to payfor the platform. The fndings provide insights into existing barriers and challenges for adoption of ICT for older peopleliving with cognitive impairment.

  • Study of Gene-Targeted Mouse Models of Splicing Factor Gene Prpf31 Implicated in Human Autosomal Dominant Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP)
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science. - : Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). - 1552-5783. ; 50:12, s. 5927-5933
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE. Pre-mRNA processing factor 31 (PRPF31) is a ubiquitous protein needed for the assembly of the pre-mRNA splicing machinery. It has been shown that mutations in this gene cause autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa 11 (RP11), which is characterized by rod-cell degeneration. Interestingly, mutations in this ubiquitously expressed gene do not lead to phenotypes other than retinal malfunction. Furthermore, the dominant inheritance pattern has shown incomplete penetrance, which poses interesting questions about the disease mechanism of RP11. METHODS. To characterize PRPF31 function in the rod cells, two animal models have been generated. One was a heterozygous knock-in mouse (Prpf31(A216P/+)) carrying a point mutation p.A216P, which has previously been identified in RP11 patients. The second was a heterozygous knockout mouse (Prpf31(+/-)). Retinal degeneration in RP11 mouse models was monitored by electroretinography and histology. RESULTS. Generation of the mouse models is presented, as are results of ERGs and retinal morphology. No degenerative phenotype on fundus examination was found in Prpf31(A216P/+) and Prpf31(+/-) mice. Prpf31(A216P/A216P) and Prpf31(-/-) genotypes were embryonic lethal. CONCLUSIONS. The results imply that Prpf31 is necessary for survival, and there is no compensation mechanism in mouse for the lack of this splicing factor. The authors suggest that p.A216P mutation in Prpf31 does not exert a dominant negative effect and that one Prpf31 wild-type allele is sufficient for maintenance of the healthy retina in mice.

  • Success and Hindrance Factors of AHA-Oriented Open Service Platforms
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ADVANCES IN COMPUTATIONAL COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE (ICCCI 2021). - Cham : SPRINGER INTERNATIONAL PUBLISHING AG. - 9783030881139 - 9783030881122 ; , s. 656-668
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the past years, there has been a flourishing of platforms dedicated to Active Assisted Living (AAL) and Active and Healthy Ageing (AHA). Most of them feature as their core elements intelligent systems for the analysis of multisource and multimodal data coming from sensors of various nature inserted in suitable IoT ecosystems. While progress in signal processing and artificial intelligence has shown how these platforms may have a great potential in improving the daylife of seniors or frail subjects, there are still several technological and non-technological barriers that should be torn down before full uptake of the existing solutions. In this paper, we address specifically this issue describing the outcome and creation process of a methodology aimed at evaluating the successful uptake of existing platforms in the field of AHA. We propose a pathway (as part of an overarching methodology) to define and select for Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), taking into account an extensive amount of parameters related to success, uptake and evolution of platforms. For this, we contribute a detailed analysis structured along with the 4 main actions of mapping, observing, understanding, and defining. Our analysis focuses on Platforms, defined as operating environments, under which various applications, agents and intelligent services are designed, implemented, tested, released and maintained. By following the proposed pathway, we were able to define a practical and effective methodology for monitoring and evaluating the uptake and other success indicators of AHA platforms. Besides, by the same token, we were able to provide guidelines and best practices for the development of the next-generation platforms in the AHA domain.

    • Dementia is a source of growing concern globally, and often impacts on social and commu-nicative functioning. INdependent LIving Support Functions for the Elderly (IN LIFE) was aproject carried out within the European Commission Research and Innovation programmeHorizon 2020 that resulted in the development of two digital communication aids for rem-iniscence intervention for elderly people with dementia and their communication partners. The purpose of this intervention study was to investigate the effects on quality of life forpeople with dementia when using these aids. People with dementia (N = 118) and their for-mal care-givers (N = 187) and relatives (N = 9) were given the communication aids for a per-iod of 4–12 weeks. To assess a range of outcomes, questionnaires developed within theproject were used along with the EQ-5D (European Quality of Life – 5 Dimensions) andQoL-AD (Quality of Life in Alzheimer’s Disease) questionnaires. Quality of life improvedamong people with dementia when measured using EQ-5D ( p < 0.05). There was also a cor-relation between the impact on the participants’ health and wellbeing, the carers’ rating ofthe usefulness of the digital communication aids and the care-givers’ satisfaction with usingtechnology ( p < 0.05). These results indicate that digital communication aids may be usefulin social interaction where one partner has dementia.

  • Outcomes of activity-based assessment (BIA) compared with standard assessment in occupational therapy
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy. - : Informa Healthcare. - 1103-8128 .- 1651-2014. ; 15:4, s. 196-203
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study was aimed at investigating the outcomes of an activity-based assessment (BIA) compared with standard assessment (SA) for evaluating clients undergoing psychiatric occupational therapy. Patients admitted to a psychiatric occupational therapy unit were randomized into the BIA or the SA assessment. The outcome indicators were (a) clients' satisfaction with the occupational therapy during the assessment period, (b) clients' awareness of capacities and occupational problems, (c) satisfaction with the assessment among the referring physicians, and (d) outcomes of the intervention following the assessment, in terms of changes in occupational performance and satisfaction. The groups did not differ in awareness of occupational problems, but the BIA group was more satisfied than the SA group with the support of their contact person and with the group leader during the period of assessment. Furthermore, physicians receiving feedback on patients in the BIA group were more satisfied than those receiving feedback on patients in the SA group. However, the groups did not differ concerning change during the treatment period in occupational performance or satisfaction. Thus, there was no difference between the assessment methods regarding the outcomes of the treatment following assessment. Minor advantages from the patients' perspective were found, in terms of better satisfaction in the BIA group, and from the referring physicians' perspective the BIA clearly seemed more satisfying than the SA. Thus, the findings showed that the BIA possessed better qualities than the SA regarding the indicators pertaining to satisfaction, but not concerning awareness of capacities and problems or the outcome of the subsequent treatment.

    • Communication is one of the areas where people with dementia and their caregivers experience most challenges. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the understanding of possibilities and pitfalls of using personalized communication applications installed on tablet computers to support communication for people with dementia and their conversational partners. The study is based on video recordings of a woman, 52 years old, with Alzheimer’s disease interacting with her husband in their home. The couple was recorded interacting with and without a tablet computer including a personalized communication application. The results from the present study reveal both significant possibilities and potential difficulties in introducing a digital communication device to people with dementia and their conversational partners. For the woman in the present study, the amount of interactive actions and the number of communicative actions seem to increase with the use of the communication application. The results also indicate that problems associated with dementia are foregrounded in interaction where the tablet computer is used.

  • It depends on who Im with: How young people with developmental language disorder describe their experiences of language and communication in school
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International journal of language and communication disorders. - : WILEY. - 1368-2822 .- 1460-6984. ; 58:4, s. 1168-1181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundThe risks of developmental language disorder (DLD) for both educational progress and socio-emotional development are well documented, but little is known about how children and young people with DLD experience and describe their language and communication. The need to complement experimental and quantitative studies with qualitative perspectives of the lived experience of individuals with DLD for speech and language therapists (SLT) practice has recently been foregrounded. AimsTo understand further the experiences of young people with DLD focusing on language and communication in a school context, and thereby contribute to the improvement of the communicative situation in school for this group. The study is guided by the following research question: How do young people diagnosed with DLD describe their experiences of language and communication in school? Methods & ProceduresThe study is based on data generated from qualitative semi-structured interviews with 23 participants diagnosed with DLD (age 13-19 years old) living in Sweden. All participants attended mainstream schools. To enable data to be collected during COVID-19 restrictions, all interviews were conducted using Zoom. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. Outcomes & ResultsFour main themes related to experiences of language and communication in school were constructed from the interviews: (1) feelings of inadequacy and comparisons with others; (2) feelings of being misjudged and misunderstood; (3) the importance of feeling safe and comfortable; and (4) the significance of the social and communicative context. The results bear witness of difficult and challenging aspects related to language and communication in school, including educational, social and emotional dimensions. An important outcome of this study is how young people diagnosed with DLD describe their language and communication functioning to be dependent on both individual characteristics and abilities, as well as situational, contextual and social factors. Conclusions & ImplicationsThe results from this study show that young people with DLD can have persisting problems related to language and communication in school, including educational, social and emotional dimensions. SLT services may therefore be needed throughout the school years to ensure that students with DLD receive adequate support. In addition, support that goes beyond language abilities and targets social, contextual and emotional aspects should be considered. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDSWhat is already known on this subjectChildren and young people have unique knowledge about their language and communication which is instrumental for designing interventions and support strategies. Qualitative analyses of interview data have been able to identify both risk factors and protective strategies in relation to the well-being of individuals with DLD. Despite this, children and young people with DLD are rarely heard in research or clinical discussions. What this paper adds to existing knowledgeIn this study we listen to the voices of young people with DLD as they describe their experiences of language and communication in school. The participants describe a condition that makes them struggle to keep up with peers and puts them at risk of being misjudged by teachers, but also give examples of situations where negative consequences are hardly felt. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work?DLD is a complex and dynamic disorder where contextual and social factors interact with individual abilities in creating the end result. The results of the study indicate that DLD can cause persisting problems related to language and communication in school, with impact on educational, social and emotional dimensions. To counteract these effects, SLT services may be needed throughout the school years, and support that goes beyond language abilities must be considered.

  • Devotional dialogue: Exploring the Musical Repertoire for Solo Voice and Clavichord from Reformation Europe
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Göteborg International Organ Academy 2017.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • If one was to make a map of Lutheran Europe from the Thirty Years’ War to the Industrial Revolution and place it over a map of the European distribution of the clavichord (that most intensely personal and devotional of keyboard instruments) from the same time period, one would find that the two geographical areas overlap almost exactly. The clavichord was J. S. Bach’s favourite instrument for his most refined and personal thoughts, but it was also the traditional dialogue partner in the singing of devotional songs in the home. Christina Ekström, who has done original work with song collections in the archives of the Moravian Brotherhood in Christiansfeld, Denmark, began to explore this repertoire together with Joel Speerstra in a concert for solo voice and clavichord at the Theological Centre at Løgumkloster in 2013. Here we propose to go deeper into this dialogue and make a musical map of singing with the clavichord in Lutheran Europe, showing how the tradition focuses perhaps less on music as domestic entertainment so much as on music as a sharing practice that reflects and performs Lutheran faith. With a selection of repertoire from this tradition our lecture-recital will attempt to illuminate more of the instrumental, vocal and interpretive aspects of this repertoire when these songs are embodied in a dialogue with the clavichord. Repertoire explored will include Olof Kolmodin’s songbooks Andelig Duwforöst (1734), J. H. Roman’s arrangements of psalter psalms as well as songs from the Moravian Church.

    • This article presents the results of a preliminary study for a future artistic research project. The preliminary study, and the performance prepared for and given at the Uppsala conference, focused on identifying some instrumental, vocal, and interpretive questions that reflect Christian belief and piety as expressed in devotional music in a Lutheran context, specifically the songs related to the Moravian Church. This preliminary study (combining both authors’ research interests which include organology, musical performance practice, and religious expression) looked only at repertoire for voice and clavichord that could reasonably be connected directly to the Moravian Church.

  • Ingår i: Ersta kulturscen, Stockholm, Ersta Diakoni, 18-20/11 2022.

  • 2016

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Christiansfeld, Danmark, Brødremenigheden, 13/5 2022.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Konstnärliga fakultetens forskningsdagar 2020, Göteborgs universitet.

  • 2020

- 0081-9816. ; 105:1, s. 127-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the goal of shedding new light on a person who has come to be overshadowed by his famous son, Wilhelm Stenhammar, the aim of this study is to identify the musical activities of Per Ulrik Stenhammar (1829–1875), an architect by profession. Questions addressed are: In which musical roles does Per Ulrik Stenhammar appear? Which environments are included in his musical activities? Which aesthetic choices can be identified? The study has a biographical approach. The orientation is agent-structuralism, a perspective which focuses the interaction between the agent and the structure, seeing them as inextricably integrated. The study uses content analysis as method. The empirical data material consists of published and unpublished compositions, personal letters, notes and sketches, family chronicles, correspondence and newspapers. The result shows that in addition to being a composer, Per Ulrik Stenhammar was also an instrumentalist and a singer, that he was involved in both confessional and art-musical environments, and that his musical activities were based on a theologically motivated aesthetic. Examples of areas for future research identified in this study are Stenhammar’s string quartets and the interface between the different aesthetic expressions in his work in the two artistic disciplines of music and architecture.

  • Performing Music from Moravian Collections
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Moravian History. ; 23:1, s. 15-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A significant amount of historical musical repertoire primarily from the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries exists in collections of the Moravian Church. This is a resource for extended knowledge of music aesthetics’ of the Moravian Church, as well as for historical music in a wider perspective. This article focuses on musical performance practices and proposes a theoretical framework that can promote a performance taking into account significant aspects of the social context. Key concepts include emotion for feelings per se, emotional community for a collective where participants developed and shared a matrix for emotions and emotive as an operational concept in the work process of the musical performance. The concepts are motivated by the emphasis on the affective dimension in the spirituality. Finally, a suite of three duets with instrumental accompaniment by Christian Gregor serves as an example of application of emotive in the process of preparing a musical performance.

  • Perspectives on Women’s Musicking in the Moravian Church
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: 7th Bethlehem Conference on Moravian History & Music.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The paper draws attention to women’s repertoire and use of music in a confessional context during the 18th century. This is done with the example of the Brødremenigheden in Christiansfeld, Denmark. The congregation was founded in 1773 and is a part of the worldwide Lutheran-Evangelical Moravian church. Christiansfeld has been included on UNESCO´s World Heritage List since 2015 for its tangible and intangible cultural heritage. The aim is to explore the Christiansfeld community as a social arena where music allowed unmarried women to have agency over their place in the social structure. This sociologically oriented musicological study – where agency, musicking, and emotives are central concepts – uses the method of content analysis. Based on sources such as steering documents, diaries and music from the Christiansfeld collection the paper discusses possibilities and limitations for women’s music use. Preliminary results from the survey reinforce the image that women’s musicianship was a priority compared to men’s and that the unmarried women had a regulated and extensive music life. In doing so, the study complements previous research on the Moravian church which, like Western music history writing and research, has primarily made men’s performances and musical works visible in the past.

  • Ingår i: Fifth Bethlehem Conference on Moravian History and Music, Bethlehem, PA, USA,. 27-29/10 2016.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The pupil, the teacher and the teaching in Moravian education: an example from the Moravian school in Gothenburg, 1787-1859 The Moravian church has since its early stages in the 18th century emphasized education and teaching for children and youth. By this followed the establishment of schools, of which several came to be reputable and appeal to families who were members of the Moraivan church as well as as to others, primarely to wealthy and prosperous people without explicit connection to any Moravian congregation. Moravian schools were to be found not only in Gemeinorten, societies that were built upon the ideology of the church like danish Christiansfeld, but also in the Moravian diaspora such as in Sweden where the the Moravian congregation existed as a subgroup of the Swedish church. With the school of the Moravian congregation in Gothenburg (”Societetsskolan för döttrar och söner” which lasted 1787-1859 for girls and 1799-1829 for boys) as an example this paper aims to discuss to what extent and in what way this institution mirror ideals of the national education as well as main features of schools in the worldwide Moravian church. By using discursive tools the paper seeks to move beyond narratives on organization and activities to instead, critically revolve around categories as the pupil, the teacher and teaching with special attention to music and singing. The paper is based on written sources, such as information about the school addressed to the public and on memoirs and Gemeindiarien, which are documents primarily aimed for members of the Moravian church.

  • The Single Sisters’ Choir in Christiansfeld, Denmark: Musical Agents and their Agency
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 8th Bethlehem Conference on Moravian History & Music.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The main question for this presentation is what characterized the musicking in the single sister’s choir in Christiansfeld, 1774–1800. The period covers the time from the founding of the choir until a regular musical life was established. The presentation treats the questions: Who were the people involved in musicking? What did they do? How did their musical actions relate to the social context? Sources are diaries of the single sisters. Based on a theoretical model by sociologist Margaret Acher the result discusses the interactions between agents, agency, and structural conditions. Results from the study show that the musical agents were spiritual leaders (male and female) and the Choro Musico and, that a significant dimension of the Choro Musico workload was to realize a liturgical and social environment through music. This was done according to the social structure, the rules, and norms of the Moravian Church. The study also shows that there was very little space for personal agency for the single women. The conclusion is that the absence of possibility for personal agency made the rapid establishment of an extensive and flourishing musical environment possible.

  • Wilhelm Stenhammar’s Musical Paternal Heritage: Life and Work of Per Ulrik Stenhammar
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: New Perspectives on Wilhelm Stenhammar: A Symposium 10–12 November 2021.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This presentation aims to contribute new perspectives on Wilhelm Stenhammar’s musical paternal heritage, centring on his father, Per Ulrik Stenhammar (1829–1875). Parallel to his profession as an architect, he also devoted his life to music as a musician and a composer. The presentation will examine his work in the service of music. His musical oeuvre includes vocal music and, to a lesser extent, instrumental music. Nearly 100 of his vocal compositions have been published, several of them posthumously. His oeuvre also includes unpublished and unfinished works, including a chorale book and two oratorios. Per Ulrik became a member of the Royal Academy of Music in 1868. An analysis has been made of sources including unpublished and published compositions, letters and notes, family chronicles, correspondence, and contemporary journals. The results show that Per Ulrik was engaged in several of the emerging musical environments in his time – the pietistic organisation Evangeliska Fosterlandsstiftelsen as well as the art music scene in Stockholm – and that his solid musical knowledge combined with his social and cultural capital made his work as a musician and a composer possible. The examination revealed that these aspects can be added to the musical paternal heritage of Wilhelm Stenhammar.

  • Predicting project performance using pre-construction performance indicators - A case study evaluation
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 20th Congress of IABSE, New York City 2019: The Evolving Metropolis - Report. - 9783857481659 ; , s. 1438-1443
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Predicting the outcome of a construction project largely relies on estimated targets of time and cost. Still, hitting the targets does not mean that the project is a success on all performance levels. Here, a retrospective case study was undertaken on a construction project identified as a successful project by the partners involved. The purpose of the study was to validate conceptual design indicators of a high-performance construction project as reported in the literature, by answering the following research questions: "What characterizes the dialogue between the different disciplines; (2) What is the dialogue about; and (3) When in the process do questions arise?" Findings indicate that the interprofessional dialogue within the project team was well established. The paper introduces a discussion that the dialogue benefited from the collaborative project environment as well as the early design intent. Further, the study also suggests that the interprofessional dialogue supported a sound project team development.

  • Tablet computer-supported conversation between people with dementia and their carers: technology as interactional focus
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Universal Access in the Information Society. - : Springer. - 1615-5289 .- 1615-5297. ; 20, s. 753-765
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of the study is to explore when and how technology becomes a topic in interactions involving people with dementia and their carers. Three dyads of older women with dementia and their carers participated in the study. The dyads interacted in the home environments of the persons with dementia using tablet computers and two web-based applications with generic pictures, videos, and music files (CIRCA) and personalized pictures and films (CIRCUS). The data included twenty-one video-recorded interactions. Topical episode analysis and transcripts of interaction were used to analyze and exemplify when and how technology was talked about in the dyads. The dyads were engaged in exploring the tablets, and six common ways of making technology a topic of conversation were identified: talk about tech problems, commenting actions, expressing uncertainty in navigation, instructing and explaining, expressing surprise, and talk about technical development. The dyads explored the tablets in ways that were reflected in the content of their conversations. If people with dementia and their carers should benefit from todays technology, such as there is evidence for the interactions examined in this study, their homes and daily environments must be equipped with sufficient internet access and technical support.

  • Local Immune regulation in human pregnancy : with focus on decidual macrophages
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • During pregnancy, the woman carries a fetus partly foreign to her immune system, because of the expression of paternal antigens. Despite this, the fetus is normally tolerated and not rejected, as is often the case with organs in allogeneic transplantations. Systemic changes in maternal blood occur during pregnancy but, perhaps of greater importance, are changes in tissues locally in the uterus. The pregnant uterine endometrium, the decidua, is infiltrated by large numbers of leukocytes, mainly natural killer (NK) cells but also macrophages and T lymphocytes. Further, various cytokines are known to be secreted at the fetomaternal interface. However, the functions of these cells and the cytokine networks are not fully understood. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the local immune balance in normal human pregnancy decidua, both in the early phase of pregnancy and at parturition.First trimester decidual mononuclear cells, NK cells and macrophages were all shown to secrete IFN-γ, IL-4 and IL-10, as detected by ELISPOT. The secretion was not mirrored in blood from the same subjects. A significantly larger number of decidual macrophages secreted IL-10 than did their blood counterparts, indicating potential regulatory functions of this cell type.Further examination of early pregnancy decidual macrophages by microarray revealed 120 genes being differentially regulated at the transcriptional level in decidual compared to blood monocytes/macrophages. Several genes were associated with alternative activation/M2 polarization of macrophages, including CCL-18, CD209, IGF-1, MRC-1 and FN-1. Genes connected to immune regulation and tissue remodelling were common, in line with the potential functions for this cell type in utero. In addition, some molecules not previously connected to decidual macrophages, such as TREM-2, A2M and PGDS, were found to be upregulated, gaining new insights into the regulatory functions of decidual macrophages.Term decidual mononuclear cells spontaneously secrete IFN-γ, TNF, IL-4, IL-10, and TGF-β. No differences were seen between tissues obtained before and after the onset of labour, indicating that decidual mononuclear cells are not the main cell population responsible for plausible cytokine regulation in the process of labour induction. Placental and fetal membranes as well as cells in the maternal systemic circulation may instead contribute to a possible shift in immune balance prior to pregnancy termination. In conclusion, decidual leukocytes, including NK cells and macrophages, are potential producers of both Th1-like/pro-inflammatory and Th2-like/anti-inflammatory cytokines in early pregnancy as well as at parturition. Decidual macrophages are of a specialized phenotype with effector functions contributing to a proper invasion of the placenta and to immunological protection of the semi-allogeneic fetus. This thesis adds new knowledge on local immune balance during normal human pregnancy, however, the clinical significance of the presented data needs to be clarified.
