  • Measurement of the Mo-92,Mo-93,Mo-94,Mo-100(gamma,n) reactions by Coulomb Dissociation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 665:1, s. art. no. 012034-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Coulomb Dissociation (CD) cross sections of the stable isotopes Mo-92,Mo-94,Mo-100 and of the unstable isotope Mo-93 were measured at the LAND/(RB)-B-3 setup at GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt, Germany. Experimental data on these isotopes may help to explain the problem of the underproduction of Mo-92,Mo-94 and Ru-96,Ru-98 in the models of p-process nucleosynthesis. The CD cross sections obtained for the stable Mo isotopes are in good agreement with experiments performed with real photons, thus validating the method of Coulomb Dissociation. The result for the reaction Mo-93(gamma,n) is especially important since the corresponding cross section has not been measured before. A preliminary integral Coulomb Dissociation cross section of the Mo-94(gamma,n) reaction is presented. Further analysis will complete the experimental database for the (gamma,n) production chain of the p-isotopes of molybdenum.

  • Clinical Characteristics and Patient-Reported Outcomes of Primary Care Physiotherapy in Patients with Whiplash-Associated Disorders: A Longitudinal Observational Study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Patient Preference and Adherence. - 1177-889X. ; 14, s. 1733-1750
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Whiplash-associated disorders (WADS) constitute a state of health characterized by a wide diversity of symptoms as a result of impairments of functions, activity limitations, and participation restrictions. Patient-reported outcome measurements (PROMs) and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) seem appropriate when describing and evaluating the health status of patients with WAD. Aim: To measure the use of PROMs and PROs as quality indicators in clinical reasoning, and to analyze and evaluate pre- and post-treatment 'pain intensity' and 'functioning', and for 'perceived improvement' in patients with WAD in primary care physiotherapy practice by year of referral, with the phase after accident and prognostic health profile embedded in the clinical reasoning process. Materials and Methods: Data were collected over a period of 10 years. Pain intensity, functioning, and perceived improvement were measured using the Visual Analogue Scale for Pain (VAS-P), the Neck Disability Index (NDI) and the Global Perceived Effect scale (GPE). Pre- and post-treatment mean differences were tested for statistical significance and compared to minimal clinically important differences (MCID). Effect sizes were expressed as Cohen's d. Multivariable regression analysis was performed to explore independent associations of year of referral, phase after the accident, and the patient's prognostic health profile with post-treatment pain intensity and functioning. Results: A consecutive sample of 523 patients was included. Pre- and post-treatment mean differences on VAS-P and NDI were statistically significant (P<0.000) and clinically relevant, with `large' effect sizes for pain intensity and functioning. MCIDs were achieved by 80% for VAS-P and for 60% for NDI. Year of referral and phase after the accident were independently associated with worse post-treatment functioning. About half of the patients (n=241 [46.1%1) perceived themselves as improved. Conclusion: The PROMs and PROs pain intensity, functioning and perceived improvement were integrated as quality indicators in the physiotherapy clinical reasoning process for patients with WAD. Significant differences in pain intensity and functioning were found but were unrelated to year of referral, phase after whiplash-related injury or prognostic health profile. The MCID VAS-P scores did not differ depending on experienced pain.

  • Evolution of collectivity near mid-shell from excited-state lifetime measurements in rare earth nuclei
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 93:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The B(E2) excitation strength of the first excited 2(+) state in even-even nuclei should directly correlate with the size of the valence space and maximize at mid-shell. A previously found saturation of B(E2) strengths in well-deformed rotors at mid-shell is tested through high-precision measurements of the lifetimes of the lowest-lying 2(+) states of the Hf-168 and W-174 rare earth isotopes. Measurements were performed using fast LaBr3 scintillation detectors. Combined with the recently remeasured B(E2; 2(1)(+) -> 0(1)(+)) values for Hf and W isotopes the new data remove discrepancies observed in the differentials of B(E2) values for these isotopes.

  • Collective excitations of Ru-96 by means of (p, p 'gamma) experiments
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 92:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: One-phonon mixed-symmetry quadrupole excitations are a well-known feature of near-spherical, vibrational nuclei. Their interpretation as a fundamental building block of vibrational structures is supported by the identification of multiphonon states resulting from a coupling of fully-symmetric and mixed-symmetric quadrupole phonons. In addition, the observation of strong M1 transitions between low-lying 3(-) and 4(+) states has been interpreted as an evidence for one-phonon mixed-symmetry excitations of octupole and hexadecapole character. Purpose: The aim of the present study is to identify collective one-and two-phonon excitations in the heaviest stable N = 52 isotone Ru-96 based on a measurement of absolute M1, E1, and E2 transition strengths. Methods: Inelastic proton-scattering experiments have been performed at the Wright Nuclear Structure Laboratory (WNSL), Yale University, and the Institute for Nuclear Physics (IKP), University of Cologne. From the acquired proton-gamma and gamma gamma coincidence data we deduced spins of excited states, gamma-decay branching ratios, and multipole mixing ratios, as well as lifetimes of excited states via the Doppler-shift attenuation method (DSAM). Results: Based on the new experimental data on absolute transition strengths, we identified the 2(+) and 3(+) members of the two-phonon mixed-symmetry quintuplet (2(1,ms)(+) circle times 2(1,s)(+)). Furthermore, we observed strong M1 transitions between low-lying 3(-) and 4(+) states suggesting one-phonon symmetric andmixed-symmetric octupole and hexadecapole components in their wave functions, respectively. The experimental results are compared to sdg-IBM-2 and shell-model calculations. Conclusions: Both the sdg-IBM-2 and the shell-model calculations are able to describe key features of mixed-symmetry excitations of Ru-96. Moreover, they support the one-phonon mixed-symmetry hexadecapole assignment of the experimental 4(2)(+) state.

  • Mixed-symmetry octupole and hexadecapole excitations in N=52 isotones
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: EPJ Web of Conferences. - : EDP Sciences. - 2101-6275 .- 2100-014X. - 9782759817948 ; 93
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In addition to the well-established quadrupole mixed-symmetry states, octupole and hexadecapole excitations with mixed-symmetry character have been recently proposed for the N = 52 isotones 92Zr and 94Mo. We performed two inelastic proton-scattering experiments to study this kind of excitations in the heaviest stable N = 52 isotone 96Ru. From the combined experimental data of both experiments absolute transition strengths were extracted.

  • Mixed-symmetry octupole and hexadecapole excitations in the N=52 isotones
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 90:5, s. Art. no. 051302-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Excitations with mixed proton-neutron symmetry have been previously observed in the N=52 isotones. Besides the well-established quadrupole mixed-symmetry states (MSS), octupole and hexadecapole MSS have been recently proposed for the nuclei Zr92 and Mo94. Purpose: The heaviest stable N=52 isotone Ru96 was investigated to study the evolution of octupole and hexadecapole MSS with increasing proton number. Methods: Two inelastic proton-scattering experiments on Ru96 were performed to extract branching ratios, multipole mixing ratios, and level lifetimes. From the combined data, absolute transition strengths were calculated. Results: Strong M1 transitions between the lowest-lying 3- and 4+ states were observed, providing evidence for a one-phonon mixed-symmetry character of the 32(-) and 42+ states. Conclusions: sdg-IBM-2 calculations were performed for Ru96. The results are in excellent agreement with the experimental data, pointing out a one-phonon hexadecapole mixed-symmetry character of the 42+ state. The 31-||M1||32(-) matrix element is found to scale with the 2s+||M1||2ms+ matrix element.

  • Jagged 1 Rescues the Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Phenotype
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Cell. - : Elsevier BV. - 0092-8674 .- 1097-4172. ; 163:5, s. 1204-1213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), caused by mutations at the dystrophin gene, is the most common form of muscular dystrophy. There is no cure for DMD and current therapeutic approaches to restore dystrophin expression are only partially effective. The absence of dystrophin in muscle results in dysregulation of signaling pathways, which could be targets for disease therapy and drug discovery. Previously, we identified two exceptional Golden Retriever muscular dystrophy (GRMD) dogs that are mildly affected, have functional muscle, and normal lifespan despite the complete absence of dystrophin. Now, our data on linkage, whole-genome sequencing, and transcriptome analyses of these dogs compared to severely affected GRMD and control animals reveals that increased expression of Jagged1 gene, a known regulator of the Notch signaling pathway, is a hallmark of the mild phenotype. Functional analyses demonstrate that Jagged1 overexpression ameliorates the dystrophic phenotype, suggesting that Jagged1 may represent a target for DMD therapy in a dystrophin-independent manner.

  • Investigation of octupole vibrational states in 150Nd via inelastic proton scattering (p,p 'gamma)
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 84:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Octupole vibrational states were studied in the nucleus (150)Nd via inelastic proton scattering with 10.9-MeV protons, which are an excellent probe to excite natural parity states. For the first time in (150)Nd, both the scattered protons and the gamma rays were detected in coincidence, giving the possibility to measure branching ratios in detail. Using the coincidence technique, the B(E1) ratios of the decaying transitions for 10 octupole vibrational states and other negative-parity states to the yrast band were determined and compared to the Alaga rule. The positive and negative-parity states revealed by this experiment are compared with interacting boson approximation calculations performed in the spdf boson space. The calculations are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data, for both positive and negative-parity states.

  • Measurements of g(41+,22+) in 70,72,74 ,76Ge: Systematics of low-lying structures in 30≤Z≤40 and 30≤N≤50 nuclei
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 88:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The interplay between single-particle and collective excitations in the 30 ≤Z≤ 40 and 30 ≤N≤ 50 even-even isotopes has been examined in light of recent new measurements of magnetic moments of 41+, 22+, and 21+ states. Purpose: The g factors of the 41+ and 22+ states in the 72,74,76Ge isotopes have been measured for the first time and the g(21+) values have been remeasured. Methods: The transient field (TF) technique in inverse kinematics with a variety of targets has been applied, following Coulomb excitation of the relevant states. The data have been analyzed within the framework of the IBA-II model. Large-scale shell-model calculations have been performed within the p3/2,p1/2,f 5/2,g9/2 orbital space for both protons and neutrons with the JUN45 and JJ4B interactions. Results: The measured Ge g factors were compared to the g factors of the low-lying states of the neighboring Zn, Ge, Se, Kr, and Sr isotopes. The results were evaluated in the context of the systematics of g factors in the A∼80 region. Conclusions: The predictions based on the classic collective model and the interacting boson model IBA-II agree with the experimental results. No evidence for shell closure was found for neutrons at N=38 or N=40. © 2013 American Physical Society.

    • Precise electromagnetic transition matrix elements in 10Be and 10C have provided surprisingly stringent tests of modern ab initio calculations using realistic nuclear forces. The analog transition in 10B can further constrain these new calculations and probe the symmetry of the wave functions across the A=10 multiplet. We report on a careful measurement of the γ-ray intensities from states populated in the 10B(p,p) reaction at 10 MeV, including a determination of the key E2 branch from the J=2 T=1 state at 5164keV to the J=0 T=1 state at 1740keV of 0.16(4)%. © 2012 American Physical Society.

  • Shape coexistence and high-K states in 74Se populated following the β decay of 74Br
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 87:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states in 74Se were populated following the ε/β + decay of 74Br, mainly from the J=K=4, 13.8-keV β-decaying isomer. Off-beam γ-ray spectroscopy was performed with the array of Clover HPGe detectors at WNSL Yale. Many new transitions were observed and rigorous spin assignments were made based on γ-γ angular correlations. The β-decay strength was found to proceed almost entirely to a few high-lying states near 4500 keV, which are consistent with deformed two-quasineutron high-K configurations. These doorway states then provide an effective tool for populating and identifying the lower prolate structures. Once categorized, the low-lying states of 74Se can be described as a set of near-spherical vibrational levels mixing strongly with a spectrum of prolate states which have an unperturbed bandhead near 1350 keV. © 2013 American Physical Society.

  • Genome-wide Association Study Identifies Shared Risk Loci Common to Two Malignancies in Golden Retrievers
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: PLOS Genetics. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1553-7390 .- 1553-7404. ; 11:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dogs, with their breed-determined limited genetic background, are great models of human disease including cancer. Canine B-cell lymphoma and hemangiosarcoma are both malignancies of the hematologic system that are clinically and histologically similar to human B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma and angiosarcoma, respectively. Golden retrievers in the US show significantly elevated lifetime risk for both B-cell lymphoma (6%) and hemangiosarcoma (20%). We conducted genome-wide association studies for hemangiosarcoma and B-cell lymphoma, identifying two shared predisposing loci. The two associated loci are located on chromosome 5, and together contribute similar to 20% of the risk of developing these cancers. Genome-wide p-values for the top SNP of each locus are 4.6x10(-7) and 2.7x10(-6), respectively. Whole genome resequencing of nine cases and controls followed by genotyping and detailed analysis identified three shared and one B-cell lymphoma specific risk haplotypes within the two loci, but no coding changes were associated with the risk haplotypes. Gene expression analysis of B-cell lymphoma tumors revealed that carrying the risk haplotypes at the first locus is associated with down-regulation of several nearby genes including the proximal gene TRPC6, a transient receptor Ca2+-channel involved in T-cell activation, among other functions. The shared risk haplotype in the second locus overlaps the vesicle transport and release gene STX8. Carrying the shared risk haplotype is associated with gene expression changes of 100 genes enriched for pathways involved in immune cell activation. Thus, the predisposing germ-line mutations in B-cell lymphoma and hemangio-sarcoma appear to be regulatory, and affect pathways involved in T-cell mediated immune response in the tumor. This suggests that the interaction between the immune system and malignant cells plays a common role in the tumorigenesis of these relatively different cancers.

  • Uncoupling of RAD51 focus formation and cell survival after replication fork stalling in RAD51D null CHO cells
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Environmental and Molecular Mutagenesis. - : Wiley. - 0893-6692 .- 1098-2280. ; 53:2, s. 114-124
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In vertebrate cells, the five RAD51 paralogs (XRCC2/3 and RAD51B/C/D) enhance the efficiency of homologous recombination repair (HRR). Stalling and breakage of DNA replication forks is a common event, especially in the large genomes of higher eukaryotes. When cells are exposed to agents that arrest DNA replication, such as hydroxyurea or aphidicolin, fork breakage can lead to chromosomal aberrations and cell killing. We assessed the contribution of the HRR protein RAD51D in resistance to killing by replication-associated DSBs. In response to hydroxyurea, the isogenic rad51d null CHO mutant fails to show any indication of HRR initiation, as assessed by induction RAD51 foci, as expected. Surprisingly, these cells have normal resistance to killing by replication inhibition from either hydroxyurea or aphidicolin, but show the expected sensitivity to camptothecin, which also generates replication-dependent DSBs. In contrast, we confirm that the V79 xrcc2 mutant does show increased sensitivity to hydroxyurea under some conditions, which was correlated to its attenuated RAD51 focus response. In response to the PARP1 inhibitor KU58684, rad51d cells, like other HRR mutants, show exquisite sensitivity (>1000-fold), which is also associated with defective RAD51 focus formation. Thus, rad51d cells are broadly deficient in RAD51 focus formation in response to various agents, but this defect is not invariably associated with increased sensitivity. Our results indicate that RAD51 paralogs do not contribute equally to cellular resistance of inhibitors of DNAreplication, and that the RAD51 foci associated with replication inhibition may not be a reliable indicator of cellular resistance to such agents.
