  • Projekt i tid och rum : Kunskapsintegrering mellan projektet och dess historiska och organisatoriska kontext
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The use of multi-project organizations has become increasingly common, which in turn, from a knowledge perspective, has enhanced the need for understanding how knowledge is managed within such a context. There is particularly a need for research on how knowledge is integrated between the project and its historical and organizational context. The notion is that you need to take into account both the intra- and interorganizational perspective, i.e. both the internal and the external context, in order to understand how knowledge is integrated. The empirical part is comprised of two longitudinal qualitative case studies conducted between 2002 and 2005, covering two subsequently executed projects carried out in a multinational company. The projects chosen were one national and one international project. The data consist of responses from semi-structured interviews and observations that were complemented with diary notes and studies of documentation and used IT tools. The results indicate that the process of integrating knowledge consists of multiple mediators, where it is necessary to consider all mediators to further enhance our understanding of how knowledge is integrated. The historical context influenced the knowledge integration, both in a positive and in a negative sense. The integration of knowledge from the sales phase was shown to be particularly problematic. Results further show obstacles as well as possibilities when integrating knowledge between the project and its organizational context. The multi-project environment was primarily a source for integrating already existing knowledge, whereas the external context was mainly used when creating new knowledge. Evidence further suggests that consultants are part of both the intra- and interorganizational context. To understand the knowledge integration it is therefore important to consider both contexts. Finally, a comparison between the two cases indicates that the international project used IT in order to overcome differences in language, and distance in time and space.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: R&D Management Conference, 2012. ; , s. 147-147
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines how deviations are managed in a complex product development setting. Past  research  has  focused  on  how  deviations  could  be  avoided.  By  using  participant observations, interviews, and data from deviation-reports this paper illustrate the routines and roles dedicated for deviation management. Furthermore, it suggests a typology of deviations developed from the rich data material. Insights into different roles and managerial strategies, especially  in  relation  to  different  types  of  deviations  represent  important  implications  in  the area of R&D management.

  • Organizational foundations and closures in a regulated environment : Swedish commercial banks 1831-1990
  • 1991
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study analyzes the foundations and closures of the total population of Swedish commercial banks in 1831-1990 using both semi-parametric and parametric event-history methods. With reference to the comparatively rigid control of entries and exits in banking, five hypotheses are formulated: (1) acquisitions constitute the principal reason for closure in banking; (2) the early years are less hazardous for banks than for members of other industries; (3) the survival patterns of banks are related to the freedom of banking operations; (4) the survival rates of banks are positively related to the general economic activity at the time of foundation; and (5) the survival rates of banks are negatively related to the degree to which customer relationships already exist. The findings support the first, second, third and fifth hypotheses; some evidence also favours the fourth hypothesis

  • Bibliometrics : Use and Abuse in the Review of Research Performance
  • 2014
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Over recent decades, the strong expansion of the number of researchers, the even stronger growth in the number of publication outlets, and managerial expansion have put heavy pressure on the peer-review system. Bibliometrics, which have been made possible by information technology, have increasingly become the yardstick for quality, a development which has been widely criticized by researchers. Biased meauring systems seemed to replace quality judgements, and the multiplication of evaluation work is even said to hamper scientific progress. In this volume, specialists from various disciplines criticize the mechanical use of uniquely metric assessment methods, which all have inherent systematic biases, and plead for the use of multidimensioned tools. This book is based on the presentations and discussions at a symposium that was arranged jointly by the Academia Europaea and the Wenner-Gren Foundations and held in Stockholm in late May 2013. An online version of this book is available at http://www.portlandpress.com/pp/books/

  • EROD induction in cultured chick embryo liver : a sensitive bioassay for dioxin-like environmental pollutants
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. - : Wiley. - 0730-7268 .- 1552-8618. ; 14:5, s. 837-842
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A technique for studying 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) induction in chick embryo liver in vitro was developed. Livers from 8-d-old embryos were cultured in rotating vials at 37 degrees C for 48 h in a medium to which DMSO-dissolved test compounds had been added. This bioassay proved to be highly sensitive to dioxin-like compounds, and its usefulness for assessing the toxic potency of such compounds in environmental samples was demonstrated. Concentration-response curves were determined for 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), 3,3',4,4',5-penlachlorobiphenyl (PCB IUPAC no. 126), 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB 77), 2,3,3',4,4'-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB 105), and benzo[k]fluoranthene (BkF). TCDD induced EROD in a concentration-dependent manner, having an EC50 of 5.0 x 10(-12) M. The cultured embryo livers were extremely sensitive to TCDD, and about 30 fg of this compound per liver (2 x 10(-13) M) was enough to significantly induce EROD. The EC50 values obtained for PCBs 126, 77, 105, and BkF were 4,4 x 10(-11) M, 9.2 x 10(-9) M, 1.6 x 10(-8) M, and 6.2 x 10(-7) M, respectively. The maximal induction levels obtained for three different preparations of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) were less than those of the other compounds tested. When the technical PCN mixture Halowax 1014 was coadministered with TCDD, the induction was lower than that caused by TCDD alone. An organic extract of fly ash from a municipal waste combustion plant was very potent. Considering its contents of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans, expressed as TCDD equivalents, the EC50 obtained was close to that for TCDD.

  • In search of known unknowns : an empirical investigation of the peripety of a knowledge management system
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In their quest to secure their level of competitiveness, organizations have turned their attention to a specific type of information technology (IT) solution referred to as knowledge management systems (KMS). Research recurrently views and defines such system as IT-tools that mainly enable the collection, storing and diffusion of knowledge within the boundaries of the organization. Consequently the focus of KMS is believed to be on intra-organizational ‘knowledge’ re-use of ‘known knowns’. However, despite this definition and despite the inherent claim in the very name of such systems research continues to report failures rather than successes. Yet, the occurrence of the phenomenon of IT–based knowledge management (KM) endeavours in organizations continuous to rise. What really is the nature of this phenomenon and what is it a manifestation of? The purpose of this investigation is to explore the nature of IT–based knowledge management endeavours and their outcomes, and to explicate thereby the intricacies that surround them. How can KMS be described? How are they developed? Why are they deployed and what, if any, are the outcomes for the organization using them are the four research questions driving the investigation. Furthermore, it the investigation rests on a theoretical framework influenced by a constructionist perspective on knowledge and builds empirically on a longitudinal case study of a large international pharmaceutical firm’s IT-based KM effort. The empirical findings suggest that the case organization bridged the boundaries with the outside world by using the KMS as a way to establish knowledge exchange relationships with key target audiences. Getting the audiences to use the system meant transforming them to de facto information producers. To enable the continuity in the use of the system, the case organization designed it to provide the audiences continuous knowledge intensive services in return for getting informated. The services centred on supporting the practices of the target audiences by drawing on the automating and informating ability of IT. Granted an interimistic at least continuity in the use of the system by the target audiences meant a possibility for knowledge creation through experimentation for the organization and a possibility for knowledge creation through the enactment of embodied practice for the target audiences. A number of intricacies however, limited as expected the lifespan of the system. The main conclusion drawn from the case study is that the phenomenon has become inter-organizational and instead of simply focusing on knowledge re-use it also focuses, and in the specific case predominantly so, on knowledge creation. This is an indication that the phenomenon can be understood as a manifestation of an attempt to search for ‘known unknowns’ by means of IT. This in turn suggests an expansion from only exploitative to both exploitative and explorative use of IT; an expansion from using IT not only for efficiency-enhancing purposes but for effectiveness-enhancing purposes as well.

  • Corporate Governance in Action : Regulators, Market Actors and Scrutinizers
  • 2017. - 1
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over time we have seen large corporations, in many cases with multinational operations, begin to play an increasingly significant role in modern society. This in turn has put the governance of these corporations into focus. Against the above background, Corporate Governance in Action helps provide a framework for examining corporate governance through a focus provided by external pressures on large corporations. It also brings together the approach of economics and finance with theories in organisation studies, such as aspects of resource dependency theory. This framework takes into consideration not only the market relations of modern corporations but also their dependence on regulators and different kind of scrutinizers. This thoughtful book is a complete research guide which provides a new understanding and applicable framework for advanced students, academics and researchers in the area of corporate governance and the related disciplines.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: 26th International Association for Management of Technology Conference, IAMOT 2017. - : International Association for Management of Technology Conference (IAMOT) and the Graduate School of Technology Management, University of Pretoria. ; , s. 1125-1139
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we address the issue of business model (BM) design difficulty facing bus incumbents namely a bus manufacturer and a bus operator during a technological change manifested in opportunity electrical charging. We utilize an in-depth longitudinal case study design to investigate the roots of this issue. The state of the art literature on BM suggests that BM decisions are conducted within the organization and that the business model design is an internal choice. While our findings relate to the BM literature by highlighting the tension between the present and potential BMs for the incumbents, they also illuminate a contribution that BM design decisions for both manufacturer and the operator are embedded in the rules of the public transportation authority. Hence, this paper illustrates how technology change exposes the embeddedness of the business models in the context, and that business model decisions can't be made in isolation.

  • Ingår i: Business History. - : ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD. - 0007-6791 .- 1743-7938. ; 60:5, s. 613-627
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Both business historians and organisation studies scholars study institutional change to understand the interactions between business and society. However, research approaches differ fundamentally, with organisational research focusing on theory-driven explanations, whereas historical research is rather theory-informed. The consequence of such disciplinary orientation is that interdisciplinary conversations rarely occur. For this special issue, we invited submissions that address how historical research can contribute to our understanding of institutional change while demonstrating dual integrity' in terms of being significant pieces of historical research that provide us with new insights into historiography and at the same time addressing important theoretical concerns.
