  • From Books to MOOCs? : Emerging Models of Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
  • 2016
  • Editorial collection (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Massive open online courses (MOOCs), which first appeared in the USA in 2008, have, of late, been hyped in the higher education space, and have evolved substantially world-wide in the last few years. In view of the fact that past applications of technological tools in education have not redeemed the high expectations for innovation, an interesting question is whether this latest development in the use of ICT will fundamentally change and improve higher education. A particularly important issue concerns how and to what degree it will have an impact on policies and practices of learning and teaching in higher education institutions. In this volume, researchers in the field of educational technology, MOOC developers and users critically analyse and discuss the current state-of-the-art from different perspectives. In addition, the volume presents views on possible future developments and influences of open and flexible digital learning and teaching. This book is based on the presentations and discussions at a symposium held in Stockholm in late May 2015, arranged jointly by the Academia Europaea and the Wenner-Gren Foundations

  • University Governance and Creativity
  • 2018
  • Editorial proceedings (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Higher education institutions in Europe haveundergone remarkable transformations over the last two to three decades. Ofparticular importance here are the far-reaching changes in universitygovernance structures. Changes related to higher education governance have alsoattracted the attention of researchers as these have been broadly discussed andwidely studied, quite often in an international comparative andinterdisciplinary fashion.Against the above backdrop the HERCulES group within Academia Europaea took the initiative for a conference on the topic “University Governance: Impeding or Facilitating Creativity?”. It could be realized in collaboration with the International Centre for Higher Education Research (INCHER) at the University of Kassel, Germany and by means of generous support from and in collaboration with the German Volkswagen Foundation (VolkswagenStiftung). This Special Issue of the European Review is based on papers presented at the conference that took place on September 29th and 30th, 2016, at the Royal Palace of Herrenhausen, Hannover. It includes a broad variety of academic researchers dealing with issues of governance and creativity in universities as well as practitioners representing the field of higher education leadership.

  • Bibliometrics : Use and Abuse in the Review of Research Performance
  • 2014
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Over recent decades, the strong expansion of the number of researchers, the even stronger growth in the number of publication outlets, and managerial expansion have put heavy pressure on the peer-review system. Bibliometrics, which have been made possible by information technology, have increasingly become the yardstick for quality, a development which has been widely criticized by researchers. Biased meauring systems seemed to replace quality judgements, and the multiplication of evaluation work is even said to hamper scientific progress. In this volume, specialists from various disciplines criticize the mechanical use of uniquely metric assessment methods, which all have inherent systematic biases, and plead for the use of multidimensioned tools. This book is based on the presentations and discussions at a symposium that was arranged jointly by the Academia Europaea and the Wenner-Gren Foundations and held in Stockholm in late May 2013. • Corporate Governance in Action : Regulators, Market Actors and Scrutinizers
  • 2017. - 1
  • Editorial collection (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Over time we have seen large corporations, in many cases with multinational operations, begin to play an increasingly significant role in modern society. This in turn has put the governance of these corporations into focus. Against the above background, Corporate Governance in Action helps provide a framework for examining corporate governance through a focus provided by external pressures on large corporations. It also brings together the approach of economics and finance with theories in organisation studies, such as aspects of resource dependency theory. This framework takes into consideration not only the market relations of modern corporations but also their dependence on regulators and different kind of scrutinizers. This thoughtful book is a complete research guide which provides a new understanding and applicable framework for advanced students, academics and researchers in the area of corporate governance and the related disciplines.

  • 2018
  • In: Business History. - : ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD. - 0007-6791 .- 1743-7938. ; 60:5, s. 613-627
  • Journal article (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Both business historians and organisation studies scholars study institutional change to understand the interactions between business and society. However, research approaches differ fundamentally, with organisational research focusing on theory-driven explanations, whereas historical research is rather theory-informed. The consequence of such disciplinary orientation is that interdisciplinary conversations rarely occur. For this special issue, we invited submissions that address how historical research can contribute to our understanding of institutional change while demonstrating dual integrity' in terms of being significant pieces of historical research that provide us with new insights into historiography and at the same time addressing important theoretical concerns.

  • 2017
  • In: Bank regulation. - London : Routledge. ; , s. 67-85
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • According to the theoretical point of departure for this chapter organizations are governed through interplay between regulators, market actors and scrutinizers. Regulators provide rules for action; market actors offer standards and scrutinizers (inspection bodies, media, NGOs, etc.) act as a force between regulators and market actors. This reasoning is applied to banking in general and processes of deregulation in particular. Before that the paper presents the basic features of banking that are important for their governance by the three said forces.

  • Corpus Linguistics in Sweden : Pioneers and their context
  • 2019
  • Book (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This volume presents findings from research on the development of corpus linguistics in Sweden as a scientific innovation. It begins with a presentation of the early international development of corpus linguistics as well as the institutional and disciplinary conditions for research on the subject in Sweden, followed by accounts of the first generations of Swedish innovators. External funding and international development were important for these pioneers, alongside the fact that established professors in language departments seem to have been relatively open to the new ideas. The criticism levelled against corpus linguistics appears instead to have come mainly from departments of general linguistics. In the course of time, this negative attitude has diminished and corpora have become an almost indispensable tool in linguistic research. Developments in Sweden are placed in an international perspective by means of an analysis of the publication database SciVerse Scopus for 1970−1999. It shows a research field in two well-defined clusters: corpus builders and corpus users, the former often with a background in language studies, the latter evincing considerable representation of psychologists and scholars of cognitive science with an interest in language acquisition and language loss. Evidence of the significance of international developments for scientific innovation is provided by an analysis of the development of professional organizations on both sides of the Atlantic.

  • Defining Management : Business Schools, Consultants, Media
  • 2016. - 1
  • Book (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Defining Management charts the expansion of management as an idea and practice from a time when it was limited to churches and households to its current ubiquity, focusing in particular on the role of business schools, consultants, and business media in this process. How did an entire industry develop around business schools, consultants, and business media which are now widely considered the authorities regarding best management practice? This book shows how these actors, on their own and in interaction: (1) became taken-for-granted and gained such definitional power over management and managers; (2) expanded across the globe from often modest and not always respected origins; and (3) impacted, and continue to impact businesses and increasingly, the broader economic and social context.

  • 2018
  • In: Ideengeschichte der BWL. - Wiesbaden : Springer Gabler. - 9783658154028 ; , s. 511-526
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper presents an analysis of the way research in business administration and economics has been presented in Sweden since the end of the 19th century onwards. It shows that in both fields presentation has changed in terms of (1) focus, (2) way of expression, (3) form and (4) language. There has thus been a change in focus of the scientific work from practical problems to theoretical approaches. In terms of the way of expression there has been a clear move from the earlier use of prose only to formalization. At the same time there has been a change in the form of presentation from the writing monographs to the publishing of journal articles and a transition of the selected language from primarily Swedish into English. All these tendencies can be said to be more pronounced among economists than among their colleagues in business administration.

  • Governance of and by Philanthropic Foundations
  • 2021
  • In: European Review. - Cambridge : Cambridge University Press. - 1062-7987 .- 1474-0575. ; 29:5, s. 672-698
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Philanthropic foundations have become increasingly important in present-day societies. In relation to governance, they represent some specific features. Like corporations, they are subject to regulation, but they differ by having neither owners nor customers. This makes the governance of foundations an important issue for study. At the same time, governance by foundations is likewise of importance. It includes the role of foundations in corporate governance based on their ownership in corporations and their role in resource allocation based on the returns of their assets. Against this background, this article addresses three research questions: (1) What are the characteristics of the governance of foundations? (2) What role do foundations play for corporate governance? (3) What role do foundations play for resource allocation? In order to contribute to answering these questions this article provides an analysis of the first centenary (1917−2017) of a major Swedish philanthropic foundation, the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. It is concluded that successful foundation governance is characterized by (1) rule compliance, (2) loyalty to the founders, and (3) legitimacy among prospective grantees. Additional conclusions are that the larger, the more concentrated, and the more long-term the asset portfolio, the more significant will be the role a foundation may play in corporate governance, and the more successful asset management and the more careful project selection, the more significant will be the role a foundation may play in resource allocation. In addition, the article demonstrates the reciprocal relationships between foundations, corporations, and grantees.

  • 2014
  • In: International Business Review. - : Elsevier BV. - 0969-5931 .- 1873-6149. ; 23:6, s. 1035-1039
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Two significant features during the post-war period have been an increasing internationalization of ecohomic activities and a growing role for financial services in the world economy. Considerable attention has been devoted to both these features separately, while attention to the internationalization of financial service firms has been more limited. Even more limited have been the efforts to combine this work with studies of the influence of market turbulence on financial service firms. The present special issue is an attempt to provide a remedy to this state of affairs. In this introduction we first provide a background to the topic. We then give a brief summary of the characteristics of financial services as well as a short review of extant literature, before presenting the six papers that make up the issue and providing some conclusions.

  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This is the final concluding chapter in an edited volume on internationalization of higher education and research. The chapter brings together the conclusions from the three earlier sections of the book. As for Perspectives, the chapter elaborates on definitions of internationalisation, role models and the role of rankings. In terms of Obstacles, it points to the significance of language, challenges of mobility and environmental concerns. Regarding Alternative Modes, the chapter discusses internationalisation at home, distance education and bransch campuses. Looking ahead, the chapter points out that internationalization of higher education and research is in flux not least as a result of political changes in the world towards more authoritarian and nationalistic leadership challenging openness and academic freedom.

  • 2013
  • In: International Journal of Strategic Communication. - 1553-118X .- 1553-1198. ; 7:2, s. 84-98
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to: (i) provide a brief overview of the emergence and dynamics of the management consulting industry, (ii) summarize the findings from the extant literature, and (iii) identify relevant issues for related research in strategic communication. The article begins by putting management consulting into context by relating it to three other fields of management: practice, education and publishing, pointing out how their interaction furthers the diffusion of management ideas. Then, the article provides an overview of the development of management consulting, showing how consulting activities and firms changed in line with their client organizations, while managing to derive continued legitimacy by adapting their image to different types of “professionalism.” Finally, the article reviews the extant research on management consulting along three levels of analysis: industry, firm, and project, and discusses the implications of its main debates and insights for strategic communication consulting.
