  • Learning pathways between university, school and working life when student teachers use digital multimodal logbooks to cross boundaries
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: <em>Pathways in Vocational Education and Training and Lifelong Learning</em>. ; , s. 45-50
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aims to provide insight into the learning processes that take place when vocational student teachers work with multimodal digital logbooks at the campus and between school and placement. The study will highlight vocational student teachers’ experiences of using logbooks between university and practicum as well as between school and pupils’ practicum. It will also highlight how student teachers learn when working with logbooks. The data consist of transcripts from eight interviews with vocational student teachers about their experiences of working with a digital, multimodal course logbook in their placement course and 19 essays about working with digital, and sometimes multimodal, logbooks between secondary school and practicum. A thematic analysis was conducted based on the key concepts in a previously developed model (Kilbrink et.al., 2021) to find out how student teachers experience the use of digital multimodal logbooks and their own learning processes during it. The analyses also show that both kinds of logbooks worked well for the students as a means of both advancing and showing their professional development. There are as many learning examples as there are essays, and the student teachers learn from failure as well as success. When the Identification model is applied to the data, pedagogical aims seem to play a greater role than the choice of digital technology. In addition, how the technology is used becomes a crucial factor for which level of communication is reached. By using the Identification model to analyse vocational student teachers’ experiences of using digital, multimodal logbooks as boundary objects between university and practicum as students and between school and practicum as teachers, as well as their experienced learning processes in relation to the use of the logbooks, the study provides insight into some of the learning processes that take place across learning institutions and practicums.

  • Micro-Teaching for Pre-Service Academic and Vocational Teachers’ Transformation of Content Knowledge
  • 2023
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Student teachers who previously have gained academic knowledge or vocational skills often find it challenging to transform content knowledge into teaching activities that contribute to their future secondary students’ learning. Student teachers express a need for pedagogical tools, time to practice, and opportunities for reflection. Previous research has shown that this can be achieved through micro-teaching, which in our interpretation implies that student teachers practice teaching 1) with a limited subject-specific content 2) for a limited amount of time 3) in a low-stakes situation. The aim of this study is to investigate in what ways micro-teaching can support student teachers in designing and conducting subject-specific and pedagogical teaching activities. Our research method is inspired by action research, and conducted in four steps. The first step is to carefully plan how to implement micro-teaching for student teachers in our own teaching. The second step is the implementation. In a third step, we evaluate student teachers’ experiences from conducting micro-teaching through a survey and individual interviews. The fourth step involves analyzing the results, and adjusting our initial plan for implementation of micro-teaching, if needed. Together, these four steps make up the first cycle. We plan to conduct a second cycle before the research questions can be answered. At the time of writing, we are conducting a first cycle in different subjects. Since the study is still in its infancy, there are no results to report, but we expect to find both similarities and differences between the different subjects in how micro-teaching can support student teachers in transforming existing content knowledge into teaching activities.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Kapet (elektronisk). - Karlstad : Karlstads universitet. - 2002-3979. ; 18:1, s. 1-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • The ethics of online interviews : Addressing some burning methodological issues
  • 2005
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we want to discuss the advantages and disadvantages we have found when using online interviews with children and teenagers.* What ethical and methodological issues are specific to online interviews?* How can the method be developed further? It is based on experiences from three different research projects in which children at different ages were interviewed online, and it discusses some ethical and meth-odological problems concerning this method. No web cameras were used, which had the effect that no eye-to-eye contact was possible between the interviewer and the interviewee.Six critical themes have emerged in our discussions of online interviews; Bridging the Distance, Written Conversations, Interpretation Difficulties, Identity, the Ethics of Online Interviewing and Practical Issues. We have found that online interviews can be very useful as they simplify the in-terview situation in many ways.

  • A gender perspective on Internet use : Consequences for information seeking
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Information research. - Borås : Högskolan i Borås. - 1368-1613. ; 10:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction. The aim of this article is to look at how attitudes towards the Internet technology differ between boys and girls, and how this affects their critical approach when seeking information.Method. The approach is ethnographic, and the material was collected by means of observations, conversations, questionnaires, interviews, computer logs and reading documents.Analyses. The analyses were made with the help of software for qualitative analysis, where all sentences both from interviews and field notes were coded. Some analyses were strictly quantitative and compared data from coded qualitative material with questionnaires and computer logs in a database sheet. Others were of qualitative nature and based on selected material from the coded texts.Results. It cannot be seen that boys and girls have different interests in the Internet technology in practice. But boys talk about their knowledge to a greater extent, and this interplays with their reflections about the Internet's reliability.Conclusion. Since a more developed cognitive model of the Internet seems to lead to more developed critical thinking about information on the Internet, it is important to help especially girls to develop models of the Internet, otherwise there is a risk that traditional gender roles will be preserved.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In dual vocational education, learning takes place in several arenas. Research hasshown that it is often complicated for pupils to integrate learning from these differentarenas, since there is a perceived gap they are supposed to bridge. In previousresearch, we have studied how teachers use digital technology as boundary objectsto bridge the gaps and to facilitate the learning process for the pupils when they areat workplaces. The aim of this study is to gain more knowledge about how pupilsexperience their teachers’ efforts to facilitate their learning across arenas when usingdigital multi-modal logbook as a boundary object between school and workplaces invocational education.Theoretical framework. The study builds on theories of boundary crossing, which is based in cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT) (Tuomi-Gröhn & Engeström, 2003). The specific theoretical framework used as a complement to the CHAT framework, is a Multilevel Boundary Crossing framework developed by Akkerman and Bruining (2016). The levels in this framework are intrapersonal, interpersonal and institutional respectively. The combined analysis will enable the degree and kind of boundary crossing that facilitate student learning or may cause contradictions. This will give a more nuanced view of pupils’ learning when moving between learning arenas in their vocational education. The results from this study are relevant for understanding how digital technology can contribute to teaching and learning in vocational education which take place in two different learning arenas.

  • Ingår i: New Review of Information Behaviour Research. - London : Routledge. - 1471-6313 .- 1740-7877. ; 2:November, s. 151-165
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reports on part of a research project about children's searches for information on the Internet. The focus of the study is what children consider to be good web pages, combined with their ability to reflect upon the reliability of the Internet. The study is a case study of a group of fourth grade children searching for information, mainly at school. However, in interviews and conversation with the children, information-seeking both at school and at home was discussed. In this class, the teacher had a clear aim to start teaching from the children's questions and to discuss the reasonableness in the answers the students found.Children age 9 - 11 have the potential to reflect upon the reliability in web pages and they do actually do this. The teaching methods in this case study probably contribute to the development of a greater awareness about lies on the Web. It is important not only to have time to search, but also to discuss the results. If we want our children to be effective information handlers, there is no point in postponing the start of this development.

  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Information Technology in Childhood Education Annual. - : Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education. - 1522-8185. ; :4, s. 5-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article will show how children (9-12 years old) describe the Internet in terms of different models. It is related to how they understand the reliability of the Internet as well as some other aspects. The study was carried out in a 4th-grade class in 1998/1999. The study has an ethnographic approach. With inspiration from information research on human-computer-interaction, the childrens descriptions are categorized as different models: the surrogate model, the metaphor model, and network representation. The children, who describe the Internet as a network representation, know a lot about how the Internet works and they also talk in terms of reliability. It appears that some knowledge about the system facilitate this reasoning, but it does not appear that their knowledge has to be very great. However, children with very little knowledge seem to have greater difficulties to see through the system

  • Connecting school and workplace with digital technology : Teachers’ experiences of gaps that can be bridged
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Vocational Education and Training. - Linköping : Linköping University Electronic Press. - 2242-458X. ; 10:1, s. 43-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to gain more knowledge about the gaps vocational teachers identify between school and workplaces in upper secondary vocational education, and their experiences of using digital technology as boundary objects to bridge these gaps. This study builds on theories of boundary crossing and is carried out through in-depth interviews with six vocational teachers. For the analysis, a model is used, where the concept learning mechanisms is borrowed from Akkerman and Bakker. In our model, the learning mechanisms coordination, reflection and transformation represent three levels to which all the gaps identified by the teachers relate. The teachers’ pedagogical aims are qualitatively different on the different levels. At the basic level, coordination; gaps with the aim to control and to keep in touch with students in their workplaces, are identified, whereas at the next level, reflection; the gaps that need to be bridged, concern creating better conditions for the students to reflect on and connect with what they have learned in the different learning arenas. Those teachers identifying gaps on the most elaborated level, transformation, want to create a complete educational experience for their students, as they try to find a seamless way of crossing the boundaries between school and the workplace.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Challenging Democracy in Early Childhood Education<em></em>. - Singapore : Springer. - 9789811377709 - 9789811377716 ; , s. 27-39
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The background for this study is the last decades emphasised ethical considerations in child research. We have found ethics to be more and more acknowledged and regulations to be strengthened. Based on this, the aim of the study is to review the ethical issues in child research to find out how ethical considerations are dealt with in this respect. Four important journals, representing three important editors were selected. Through reading 707 abstracts from volumes 2016 and 2017, empirical studies focusing on children under the age of 8 were found in 95 articles and were further analysed regarding ethical issues. The result shows that regardless of requirements in journal guidelines, about one third of the articles lack any ethical reflection. Further, it is also shown that just over half of the articles merely stated compliance with regulations and standards, and just a few of articles presented a deeper reflection on the ethical considerations including occurring dilemmas. The shift towards stronger ethical regulations is discussed as if it might encourage the tendency of just doing what is necessary according to laws and when doing so, the risk of ethical drift is elaborated.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Early Childhood Education Journal. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1082-3301 .- 1573-1707. ; 49:6, s. 1087-1098
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to examine the ways in which curriculum goals on digitalisation are viewed in relation to the over- arching democratic mission of Swedish preschools. Groups of preschool staff from three preschools located in different areas were interviewed with the focus on how they discuss democracy and the democratic aspects of digital tools and children’s digital competence, which are concepts used in the curriculum. Collective mind maps – constructed by the participants – were used as focal points in the interviews. The analysis centres on the content of these discussions, but also touches on the ways in which the groups communicated. The findings show that the groups from the three preschools expressed very different views on using digital tools and developing preschoolers’ digital competence, and that these views corresponded with their general views on democracy. The ways in which the groups expressed their views of democracy are also reflected in their discussions with each other. Preschool teachers’ and childcare workers’ own lack of digital competence is mentioned briefly as a reason for not using digital devices by the group using them the least, but this does not seem to be the main reason for their infrequent use of digital media with the children.

  • Gendered interviewing?: A comparison of online and face-to-face interviews
  • 2007
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In all interview situations there is a power imbalance in that the interviewer sets the agenda and takes control. When interviewing children the power imbalance between adult and child also has to be taken into consideration. The atmosphere and setting are important factors for the outcome of the interviews; the amount of data as well as the validity. This paper is based on experiences from two different research projects in which both online and face-to-face (f2f) interviews were used, and it discusses what different media can mean to the respondents. The interviewees were between 11 and 16 years old. The analyses were made from transcripts of 11 online interviews and 13 face-to-face interviews. The flow of the dialogue and the amount of words used has been analysed. There was a difference in how much the interviewees expressed themselves. Overall, the answers were longer in f2f interviews, but in f2f interviews the boys had the longest answers, and in the online interviews the girls wrote the longest answers. A difference in the intensity of questions from the researcher could be noted.Could it be that boys generally are more used to spoken language and feel more comfortable in an interview situation where they can express themselves orally? Could it be that girls are more used to being quiet and have adopted the possibility to express themselves in written text? Can we find ways of exploiting this?

  • ICT in initial teacher training : Research review
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: OECD Education Working Papers. - Paris : OECD Publishing. - 1993-9019.
  • Rapport (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This research review reports on articles presenting empirical research in the area of how teacher- training institutions work on preparing future teachers for the integration of information and communication technologies (ICT) in their future classrooms. It was conducted mainly in English and French and covers research in 11 OECD-countries during the years 2002-2009. The research is unanimous, even if it is not comprehensive, and it shows that ICT is not used regularly or systematically in the countries reviewed. There are good examples, carried out by enthusiastic teacher trainers, but only a minority of the student teachers benefit from this. Very few articles report innovative use of recent technology. Most of the research reports on the use of computers and traditional computer software. Overall, student teachers do not integrate technology into their teaching. A number of reasons for this are identified. The overall picture is that implementation is necessary at all levels (macro, meso, micro) for a successful outcome, but research also gives examples of how problems can be overcome at a micro-level, which is the level of the actors pedagogical practice. Enthusiasts do seem to have room for maneuver, but the lack of incentives makes it difficult to involve everyone. According to the presented research, the following is needed: Policy level: Define clear expectations, carry out evaluations and give room for enough flexibility for the changing field. Management level: Offer career possibilities, relevant incentives and suitable equipment, define clear expectations on cooperating schools and mentor teachers in addition to what is already mentioned for a policy level. Local actors level (teacher trainers, mentor teachers and student teachers): Ensure basic technological skills, integrate technology as a natural part in subject courses as well as internship, and learn about pupils technological worlds

  • ICT, teacher education and assessment : What is assessed and how is it done?
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although it is mandatory for student teachers in Sweden to show an ability to use ICT in pedagogical activities to obtain a teacher's degree, this ability is not always assessed in courses. Student teachers themselves claim that they are not enough prepared, not only in Sweden. Assessment in teacher training has two sides, the students will be assessed themselves, but they will also learn how to assess others. When ICT is involved there are further two sides; the student teachers ability to use ICT will be assessed and ICT can be used for assessment. When discussing teacher training, ICT and assessment there are several perspectives to take into account. This paper presents a review of research within the area, but it also takes a step further and looks at how ICT is used in combination with assessment in other parts of higher education to discuss how teacher education can be developed in this respect.

  • 2003
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract Experiences from two doctoral dissertations where childrens perspective has been focused have shown that ethical as well as methodological issues have to be highlighted. Interview studies and ethnographical studies often take up the perspective of the researcher or other adults to obtain as valid results as possible. The authors would like to extend the problem to include also what it means to the children in preschool and school to participate in a scientific study, and put focus on ethical aspects which can arise when chil-dren and researchers meet.

    • This is an educational case study trying to show what children (ages 10-12) think about searching for information on the Internet. In the guidelines for primary (and secondary) school it is said among other things that the students should learn how to evaluate facts from different sources. Since Internet came into our schools this has been the subject of many discussions. To what extent are these young children able to search for information on the Internet? Some teachers don't let the children even try and others think that Internet is a fantastic tool to use in training the students to evaluate facts. There have been observations, interviews, less formal talks and analysis of children's written work in three different schools/classes. These schools/classes were chosen because it was known that the teachers let the students use the Internet for information searches of their choice (within reason). All the students used AltaVista, MegaCrawler and similar search engines. The findings are that the children appreciate that Internet is a fast way to find current information and they all want to find "good" information. What "good" is differ from student to student. It can be anything from short texts (in Swedish) to "non-commercials", but they all had the ambition to do a good job and not just take the first hit available. They were also aware of the fact that there could be "lies" on the Internet. If the children are to succeed with this type of work they have to have the opportunity to practice

    • This article describes how working with Internet seeking in search engines like Google can affect young students motivation learning to read. The data on which this paper is based, was collected during 2002 in a Swedish setting with 52 students, 6 to10 years. The Internet seeking was integrated in all teaching, though the time spent by the computer for each child was relatively short. The approach was ethnographic including various data collection methods such as ob-servations, interviews, chats, examining written documents, and a reading comprehension test. The data was analysed within a socio-cultural perspective, which claims that knowledge is constructed and developed through communication with the environment in a wide sense. It was obvious that the children became interested in reading when they saw the older ones working with the Internet, finding interesting information they shared with younger classmates. The results of the reading comprehension test, which was conducted every year, showed that all grade 1 students had reached a reading level corresponding to the average of grade 2. Before the start of the project this had never happened.Further research might confirm if working with Internet searches can be used as a method to motivate children learning to read.
