  • Annual Review of the Sociology of Religion. Religion and Internet
  • 2015
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The interest of the book lies in the diversity of the geographical areas, religions, and online religious presence which nevertheless have a lot of points in common. Non-interactive websites, social networks, chat lines, and so on come together to provide a good panorama of the online opportunities to religions nowadays.

  • Balancing hope at the end of life organisational conditions for spiritual care in palliative homecare in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Social Science and Medicine. - 0277-9536. ; 331:August 2023
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to examine how norms and values related to culture, religion, and spirituality were experienced and expressed by healthcare professionals caring for patients at the end of life in Advanced Care at Home (ACH) in Sweden, with a focus on how organisational aspects enabled or hindered spiritual care. Founded on participant observation with physicians and exploratory short-term fieldwork conducted between June and December 2019, findings show that physicians experienced communication problems relating to both religion and culture, yet were skilled in balancing hope and existential needs, medically and practically. However, all healthcare encompassed a secular bias complicating abilities to “read” religious and spiritual needs, reflecting a general lack of religious literacy among healthcare providers. ACH physicians and the palliative care team were facilitated by several organisational and structural conditions necessary for person-centred and spiritual care, including the non-hierarchical and interprofessional composition of care teams, continuity of care, space for physicians' reflection, and engagement in dialogue with patients and their relatives. Furthermore, the 6S palliative care ideology was promoted within the team, as was a creative outlook in supporting patients and their relatives' hope at the end of life. Nevertheless, interest varied. Some physicians were more skilled in dialogue, creativity and including the patient in medical decisions. Others were less focused on the person and maintained a strong emphasis on medicine, practicalities, and biomedical testing. Further, structural and organisational hindrances to person-centred and spiritual care were illuminated, including a lack of routines surrounding protecting the patient's needs in transitions from hospital to ACH. Even though the organisation of care in ACH provided conditions for person-centredness, the lack of religious literacy caused further hindrances to spiritual care. We conclude that, without religious literacy, and the ability to holistically meet patients' spiritual needs, care cannot be truly person-centred.

  • A Response to Wolfart's "religious Literacy": Some Considerations and Reservations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Method and Theory in the Study of Religion. - : Brill. - 0943-3058 .- 1570-0682. ; 34:5, s. 453-464
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This text addresses three related aspects of Wolfart's article on religious literacy: The critique of assumptions on the outcome of increased religious literacy, questions about the purpose of religious education, and the suggestion that religious studies are ex-theological. Although the predictability of the results of certain classroom activities presents a fundamental problem, I argue that the tentative and generic abilities highlighted in the religious literacy discourse may function as a starting point to elaborate on a better definition of religious literacy in religious studies. Moreover, based on Biesta's educational philosophy, I argue that the religious literacy discourse is about learnification in rhetorical disguise as value-based education. Instead, I suggest that the purpose of religious education should be (re)considered from Biesta's three dimensions of qualification, socialization, and subjectification. Finally, I problematize Wolfart's suggestion that religious studies are ex-theological and conclude that, although there are a theological dimension and a genealogy to be observed in the religious literacy discourse, other kinds of scholarly aspects are also worth exploring further.

  • Blessing same-sex unions and the invention of a ‘genuine homosexuality’ in the Church of Sweden
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Sexualities. - : SAGE Publications. - 1363-4607 .- 1461-7382. ; 18:5/6, s. 564-592
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Church of Sweden decided to introduce a blessing ceremony for same-sex couples in 2005. This article examines how the blessing ceremony was made possible by the invention of a new ‘genuine’ homosexuality. Theological issues concerning ‘sin’, ‘grace’, eschatology, ‘God’, anthropology and the status of the Bible and historical texts came to be understood and articulated in new ways when the idea of ‘genuine’ homosexuality began to be discussed and gained acceptance in the Church of Sweden. I argue that the decision to introduce a blessing ceremony not only represented a change in how the Church of Sweden regards homosexuality and same-sex relationships, thereby formulating and reformulating well-established Christian teachings and doctrines, but also that new exclusions were articulated which strengthened the hegemonic and heteronormative order. The behaviours and social forms that were excluded include bisexuality, promiscuity, promiscuous homosexuality, and polyamorous relationships.

  • Conflicting views, mutual dependence. Christian faith, sexuality, and intergroup relations
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Religion: A human phenomenon, IAHR, Toronto, 15-21 augusti.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Church of Sweden decided to acknowledge the blessing of same-sex unions in 27 October 2005. The decision triggered a series of diverse reactions, and two groups with explicit different views on sexuality emerged. These two groups differ in essential ways when it comes to theology, Biblical interpretations and scriptural authority, as well as organizational, clerical, liturgical and practical matters. The main concern here is how these groups comprehend, percept, articulate and relate to each other. I will argue that these two groups, as different as they at first might seem, are dependent on each other in significant ways. I will consider what implications contradictory views on sexuality have on how social and religious relations are constituted, as well as how these groups are constituted by the understanding and conception of each other. In what ways does a mutual dependence affect the possibilities for social and religious change?

    • The Nordic countries have witnessed the growth of various Eastern practices, such as yoga, meditation, tantra, and acupuncture, among others. These practices have been adopted in contexts where overt religious expressions may be challenging, such as in public schools, health care, and corporate settings, often marketed as health-promoting and stress-reducing techniques. This volume aims to explore the reception, development, and construction of Eastern practices in the Nordic countries, with a focus on embodied practices related to religiosity, alternative medicine, spirituality, and healing. The anthology seeks to discuss issues such as the reception of Eastern practices in the Nordic countries, the contexts in which these practices are practiced, practitioners’ characteristics and views, theoretical perspectives on religious change and secularization, the relationship between science and practices, and historical aspects. The “Easternization” process, which involves the exchange of ideas and practices between East and West, has led to the incorporation of Eastern practices into Western cultural contexts and has influenced fields such as somatic psychology and mind/body therapies. Some of these practices, such as mindfulness, have become “crossover practices” used by individuals from different religious and cultural backgrounds, in various domains such as religion, wellness, science, and the market. This chapter introduces the themes and gives an overview of the twelve chapters included in the volume.

  • Leaving Islam in contemporary Sweden. Taking lived religion, materiality and the use of nonfiction in autobiographical narratives into account in apostasy studies
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Disaffiliation, Dis-identification, Disavowal: (Ex-)Muslims and Public Apostasy from Islam in Francophone Culture and Politics, London 4-5 april 2019. School of Advanced Study, University of London.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This presentation is based on fieldwork conducted among ex-Muslims in Sweden, with focus on life-stories, religious practices, norms and values. The ex-Muslims belong to three different groups: 1) Ex-Muslims that are part of the Central Council for ex-Muslims in Scandinavia. This group primarily, but not only, consists of, immigrants from Iran and is part of a global network of ex-Muslims. 2) Neo-Pentecostal and Free Church Christian mission among immigrants from Muslims countries, such as Somalia, Iran and Afghanistan, has led to former Muslims converting to Christianity. 3) Non-organized former Muslims that are agnostics or atheists or religious disaffiliated that still, to some extent, believe and/or practice religion without belonging to a Muslim community. There are for instance gay Muslims in Sweden that express that they have to leave religion to keep their faith, i.e. “nondenominational Muslims”. Apostasy narratives usually contain self-referential and autobiographical components, and the truth-claims made in them are often based on the narrator’s own experiences as a former Muslim. From the autobiographical narratives it is clear that Islam is presented in a negative and biased way. This presentation examines the use of nonfiction in autobiographical apostasy narratives and how personal, experienced-based claims relate to widespread cultural themes found in islamophobic discourses. In addition, a too one-sided focus on narratives tends to miss out other important aspects concerning materiality (clothing, make-up, food, etc.) and theoretical and methodological perspectives that are aligned with the research field Lived religion, where aspects concerning habitus, emotions, rituals, power, non-institutional religion, the sacred in everyday life, to name but a few aspects, have the potential to challenge previous apostasy studies that are more limited to religious faith/beliefs, “church” attendance, and a more cognitive perspective on religion. The aim is to outline new theoretical perspectives that enable a better understanding of religious change that leaving religion is, or can be, a part of.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Chaos. Dansk-norsk tidsskrift for religionhistoriske studier. - 0108-4453. ; 59:1, s. 199-218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Jag vill inte dö, jag vill bara inte leva ["I don't want to die, I just don't want to live"](2008) by Ann Heberlein, Doctor of Theology, attracted much attention when it was published and is already considered a modern classic. The autobiographical text revolves around a psychiatric diagnosis - bipolar disorder type II - but it also develops several theological and ethical themes. This article examines Heberlein’s text departing from the genre (auto)pathography, and related questions of authenticity, facts and fiction. It is argued that the pathographical reading of the text, which has dominated its reception, tends to overlook the religious aspects of Heberlein’s writing, thus limiting the understanding of the text to a testimony from a pathological individual. By highlighting Jag vill inte dö, jag vill bara inte leva in relation to a Christian tradition of confession, other central religious themes appear, particularly themes related to Christian concepts such as eschatology, "sin" and "grace".
