  • PLUS Borås : Om professionsutveckling och dokumentation
  • 2009

  • Effectiveness of Third-Class Biologic Treatment in Crohn's Disease : A Multi-Center Retrospective Cohort Study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Medicine. - : MDPI. - 2077-0383. ; 10:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Multiple studies have described the effectiveness of ustekinumab (UST) and vedolizumab (VDZ) in patients with Crohn's disease (CD) failing anti- Tumor necrosis factors (TNFs); however, the effectiveness of VDZ or UST as a third-class biologic has not yet been described.Aims and Methods: In this retrospective multicenter cohort study, we aimed to investigate the effectiveness of VDZ and UST as a third-class biologic in patients with CD.Results: Two-hundred and four patients were included; 156/204 (76%) patients received VDZ as a second- and UST as a third-class therapy (group A); the remaining 48/204 (24%) patients received UST as a second- and VDZ as a third-class therapy (group B). At week 16-22, 87/156 (55.5%) patients and 27/48 (56.2%) in groups A and B, respectively, responded to treatment (p = 0.9); 41/156 (26.2%) and 15/48 (31.2%) were in clinical remission (p = 0.5). At week 52; 89/103 (86%) patients and 25/29 (86.2%) of the patients with available data had responded to third-class treatment in groups A and B, respectively (p = 0.9); 31/103 (30%) and 47/29 (24.1%) were in clinical remission (p = 0.5).Conclusion: Third-class biological therapy was effective in more than half of the patients with CD. No differences in effectiveness were detected between the use of VDZ and UST as a third-class agent.

  • BL-1020, a novel antipsychotic candidate with GABA-enhancing effects : D2 receptor occupancy study in humans
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: European Neuropsychopharmacology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0924-977X .- 1873-7862. ; 19:12, s. 841-850
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BL-1020 is a potentially novel antipsychotic, which comprises the typical antipsychotic perphenazine linked by an ester bound to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), intending a simultaneous dopamine-2 (D(2)) receptor blockade and GABA facilitation in the brain. This positron emission tomography (PET) study, using [(11)C]raclopride, assessed the extent and duration of D(2) receptor occupancy (D(2) RO) and safety for single doses of BL-1020 in healthy male subjects. Overall, this study did not raise any safety concern. Single doses of 16-32 mg BL-1020 caused a dose dependent striatal D(2) RO. The 32 mg dose of BL-1020 resulted in an average D(2) RO of 44% at 4-6 h post dosing (pd), which declined to 33% at 24 h pd. Equimolar doses of BL-1020 and perphenazine resulted in similar D(2) RO at 24 h pd. Pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic analysis predicted that oral once daily administration of 32 mg BL-1020 would result in D(2) ROs ranging from 52 to 66% at a steady state.

  • Changing teacher education in Sweden
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite attempts through official policy over the past forty years and up to the end of the first decade of the new millennium to ‘unite’ teacher education and provide a common teacher education programme for all teachers with a common professional scientific knowledge content, as in many other countries teacher education in Sweden today is still currently subjectively structured in accordance with a vertically and horizontally differentiated school system that gives rise to different teacher educational traditions and different ways of perceiving what characterizes the teachers’ mission and professional expertise. Moreover, recent developments are reinstating this distinction even at an objective level of formal policy. The present paper discusses and illustrates these issues based on data from three separate ethnographic studies of teacher education over the past twenty five years by the authors. This research constitutes thus a series of policy ethnographic investigation across three decades of policy making in Swedish teacher education.

  • Changing teacher education in Sweden : Using meta-ethnographic analysis to understand and describe policy making and educational changes
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Teaching and Teacher Education. - : Elsevier Ltd.. - 0742-051X .- 1879-2480. ; 44, s. 160-167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article derives from policy ethnographic research on teacher-education change in Sweden concerning the development of a unified profession with a common professional-knowledge base. This was a social democratic government policy for teacher education from the 1950s up until 2007, when the newly elected right wing government turned away from unification and toward re-traditionalisation. Based on a meta-ethnographic analysis of the policy ethnographies the article illustrates resistance toward unification and raises critical questions concerning the intellectual foundations and integrity of reform processes. Attempts are also made to locate the disclosures in relation to international research.

  • Changing teacher education in Sweden by inauthentic and ideological policy processes
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Paper presentation at the 2014 Oxford Ethnography Conference, New College Oxford, Sept 15-18 2014.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Most modern definitions of professions connect professional actions to scientific studies and higher education. In the present article, based primarily on a meta -ethnographic analysis of a series of policy ethnographic studies, we examine this relationship in respect of teacher education in Sweden. A 60 year period of policy writing from the 1940s onwards is discussed. Two key turns are identified. The first concerns the development of a policy series for a unified profession with a common scientific cognitive base. The second, from 2007, critiques this trajectory and turns away from unification toward a horizontal and fragmented cognitive base and a dualistic teacher education structure.Through the meta-ethnographic analysis the most recent round of policy is demonstrated to have been purely ideologically motivated, highly unnecessary and significantly inauthentic.

  • The Impact of Performativity on Prospective Teachers Learning Strategies and Professional Development
  • 2014
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years a flood of interrelated reform-ideas with the main intention to reorient educational systems has been spread across the globe (Ball, 2003). These reform ideas are according to Ball (2003) embedded in three interrelated policy technologies or discoursers; the market, managerialism and performativity (p215), that has become an important part in aligning the educational system organisation with systems that traditionally belongs to the private sector. In this process the educational system and teacher education have become a political battleground geared to ideological transformations of society (Apple, 2001, 2009) which has had many consequences not at least for teaching and learning in education institutions. The Swedish school system and teacher education has, as in many other countries, undergone major political and policy-related changes in the last decades. In Sweden this has meant that knowledge of facts in subjects and knowledge about how to make these facts relevant to learn and reproduce by pupils was given a key position and an increased demand on examinations and tests in these subjects (Bender, 2013; SOU 2008:109, 2008). In this chapter the Swedish Teacher education will be taken as a critical case and the focus will be on the performative discourse in terms of tests and evaluations. The aim with this paper is to make visible how the on-going process of education within teacher education and its performative demands affect student teachers learning strategies and professional development. The intention is to analyse, make visible and try to understand how the examination tasks control what counts as legitimate knowledge for student teachers for their future work as teachers in compulsory school. The following questions will be given special attention: What meanings and understanding are generated through these examinations? How do the students handle examinations tasks? What consequences might this have on student teacher professional knowledge development? The foundation for the paper is a ethnographical meta-analysis of two studies (Eriksson, 2009; Player-Koro, 2012) within teacher education carried out between 2004-2009. The reanalysis involving comparisons across our projects in an attempt to identify and synthesise key elements from these investigations (Beach, Eriksson, & Player-Koro, 2013). These key elements are then used as ‘data’ together with extracts aimed at illustrate arguments and question emerging claims. In the present case it is mainly extracts of and summaries from educational arrangements and educational effects but also extracts of and summaries from official policy that figure in data. Most material is from observations of natural occurring conversations in or close to actual class/lecture-room contexts. The reanalysis was characterised as an interactive process between researchers, the data and theory (Jeffrey & Troman, 2004). In this process Bernstein´s (2003) concept of the pedagogic device has been used. The pedagogical device refers to a concept and set of rules, distributive rules, recontextualizing rules and evaluative rules, describing how the regulation of consciousness takes place through communication in a pedagogical practice. The pedagogic device refers in this sense to the process where knowledge is transformed into pedagogic communication through the embedding of two discourses, the instructional discourse within the regulative discourse that together forms the pedagogic discourse that constitute the rules by or through which pedagogical subjects (in this case student teachers) are created. The whole purpose and meaning of the device is, according to Bernstein, condensed in the continuous evaluation going on in pedagogical practices. This means that examinations structure the form and content and the social interactions within the pedagogical practice. Bernstein´s (2003, p 156) distinction between two fundamental forms of knowledge discourses; vertical and horizontal discourse that reflects a dichotomy between scientific- and common-sense knowledge was also important for the analysis. Method In both studies (Eriksson, 2009; Player-Koro, 2012) it was found that a performative discourse has had major consequences for student teachers strategies and development of their professional knowledge base. The performative practice seemed to move the professional knowledge base toward weak structures (weak grammar, poor insulation, indistinct concepts, local regulation), a knowledge form that is described by Bernstein (2003) as horizontal discourse. In both studies the main data was produced through detailed situated investigations based on long-term study of practices within different kinds of teacher education contexts. Eriksson´s fieldwork lasted for 1,5 year in 2004-2005 and the participants consisted of prospective teachers aimed for teaching of younger children (school year 1-6) and teacher educators. Player-Koro´s fieldwork covered over four years of investigation, 2007-2010. The participants involved were prospective mathematics teachers for older children (school year 4-9) and their teacher educators. Participant observations from different teaching situations together with interviews with students involved in these educational settings formed the main body of data. The fieldwork was grounded within the interaction between students and teachers as well as between students, as for example, in the lecture hall, seminar room, mentoring group meetings and study groups. Expected Outcomes The most significant finding from this reanalysis that will be problematized in the paper is that student teachers learning strategies are heavily shaped by their examination tasks. The problematic thing with this is that these performative priorities seem to prevent student teachers from developing a deeper understanding of both their professional knowledge and their subject knowledge. This means that they, through examinations, are prevented from the access to a vertical discourse that could provide them with mechanisms for generating new knowledge beyond specific and isolated contexts and content (a horizontal discourse). Students was through examinations often steered toward the development of a horizontal knowledge structure which is problematic for them in their future work as teachers because of the fact that a horizontal form of knowledge is less assured and less ‘powerful’ than a vertical knowledge structure. A lack of access to a vertical discourse could amongst other things, lead to a professional teaching staff that can be easily manoeuvred into new boundary areas and also easily marketed. • 2019. - 74
  • Ingår i: Storm och stiltje. - Göteborg : SOM-institutet. ; , s. 301-320
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • "Children's culture" in national cultural policy initiatives : for, with or by...? A comparison between Sweden, Norway and England
  • 2014
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to create knowledge on national cultural policies directed at children. The research questions are about standpoints and arguments in national cultural policies directed at children in Sweden, Norway and England, and identified similarities and differences among these standpoints. The focus is on rhetorics of national cultural policy. A comparative method is applied and the empirical material consists of a small selection of governmental documents. The analysis reveals some variations in standpoints and arguments on national cultural policies directed at children. One example is different approaches to national identity in the documents; in this respect Sweden differs from both other Nordic countries and from England in not claiming any national identity. The approaches to childhood are also different according to the empirical documents. Finally policy for children’s culture as politics of recognition is shortly discussed.

  • Ingår i: Svensk biblioteksforskning. - : Högskolan i Borås. - 0284-4354 .- 1653-5235. ; 17:1, s. 39-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article is a reflection on the Swedish library system, taking its departure point in the concept of “library geography”. The aim is to construct an updated and realistic description of the sector as a whole, including basic institutions, organisational elements, main actors and basic relations. The study uses a pragmatic and interpretative approach, based on a small sample of empirical evidence. The sources are varied and consist of web sites, library calendars, encyclopaedias, academic literature and reports from public agencies at different levels. The article presents a figure identifying different founding categories of how libraries are conceptualised in practice. It also introduces a new construction for mapping different institutions, organisational elements etc. in relation to their position in social areas or societal dimensions. The authors reflect on the incongruent structure of the field and confirm thereby the conclusions of other researchers. They also add new aspects to the picture such as digital initiatives and organisational life in the private sector of the Swedish library system. Some suggestions are given on how to map the library field in the future, based on categories such as user, documentary practices and roles and functions.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Regntunga skyar. - Göteborg : SOM-institutet. ; , s. 159-170
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Calcineurin is an important factor involved in glucose uptake in human adipocytes
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry. - : SPRINGER. - 0300-8177 .- 1573-4919. ; 445:1-2, s. 157-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Calcineurin inhibitors are used in immunosuppressive therapy applied after transplantation, but they are associated with major metabolic side effects including the development of new onset diabetes. Previously, we have shown that the calcineurin inhibiting drugs tacrolimus and cyclosporin A reduce adipocyte and myocyte glucose uptakes by reducing the amount of glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT4) at the cell surface, due to an increased internalization rate. However, this happens without alteration in total protein and phosphorylation levels of key proteins involved in insulin signalling or in the total amount of GLUT4. The present study evaluates possible pathways involved in the altered internalization of GLUT4 and consequent reduction of glucose uptake provoked by calcineurin inhibitors in human subcutaneous adipose tissue. Short- and long-term treatments with tacrolimus, cyclosporin A or another CNI deltamethrin (herbicide) decreased basal and insulin-dependent glucose uptake in adipocytes, without any additive effects observed when added together. However, no tacrolimus effects were observed on glucose uptake when gene transcription and protein translation were inhibited. Investigation of genes potentially involved in GLUT4 trafficking showed only a small effect on ARHGEF11 gene expression (p < 0.05). In conlusion, the specific inhibition of calcineurin, but not that of protein phosphatases, decreases glucose uptake in human subcutaneous adipocytes, suggesting that calcineurin is an important regulator of glucose transport. This inhibitory effect is mediated via gene transcription or protein translation; however, expression of genes potentially involved in GLUT4 trafficking and endocytosis appears not to be involved in these effects.

  • Exploring childhood cancer survivors' views about sex and sexual experiences -findings from online focus group discussions.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Oncology Nursing. - : Elsevier BV. - 1462-3889 .- 1532-2122. ; 20, s. 165-172
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: To explore childhood cancer survivors' views about sex and sexual experiences and, as an additional aim, their possible needs for care and support from health care professionals regarding sexual life.METHODS: Written online focus group discussions were performed with survivors of childhood cancer, identified through the Swedish Childhood Cancer Registry; 133 (36%; aged 16-25) participated. Written text was analysed using qualitative content analysis.RESULTS: The analysis resulted in one main category: Could my cancer experience have an impact on my sexual life? with four generic categories: Sex considered to be good, Feeling insecure and falling behind, Relating sex to a stable relationship and Concerns related to the physical body. In general, participants had not reflected on the possibility that their cancer experience could impact on sexual life. Sex was often considered to be something natural, important and taken for granted. However, thoughts and worries were expressed including being shy, feeling insecure and falling behind peers. Physical concerns included vaginal dryness and difficulties related to erection and reaching orgasm. Many participants stated that sexual issues had not been discussed with health care professionals, however, the need for such support differed.CONCLUSIONS: Many of the childhood cancer survivors' did not relate their sexual experiences to previous cancer treatment. However, problems were expressed, both of emotional and physical nature. Many participants stated that they had not received any information or support regarding sexual issues from health care professionals, why it is recommended to be regularly addressed in follow-up care.

  • Phylogeny and macroevolution in Isoetes (Isoetales)
  • 2024
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis has focused on the evolutionary history of Isoetes (Isoetales, Lycopsida), its phylogeny, megaspore morphology and evolutionary path through deep time. With a broadened sampling of species to include more of the worldwide diversity of the genus compared to previous work an unexpected sister to the rest of the genus was found. Isoetes wormaldii Sim is a critically endangered species from the southeastern Cape region in South Africa, which grows in ponds and slow-moving streams. There are only a few, small populations, and they are very sensitive to habitat changes. The rest of Isoetes is divided into five major clades, which show complex and not readily understandable biogeographic patterns, and by which processes the species came to live in their current locations in the world is often a conundrum. The age of the extant Isoetes is intriguing as it could potentially explain some of the baffling geographic distributions. Analyses based on whole chloroplast genomes and nuclear cistrons found that the choice of clock model and which genome dataset the dating analysis is based on matter greatly when trying to date the genus as the results were highly inconsistent. The solution to the dating analysis woes might be dependent on finding new bases, e.g., fossil evidence, for age calibrations which would require the morphology of Isoetes to be better understood. Our study of megaspore morphology found substantial differences among species of Isoetes in both ornamentation and surface texture/structure. While no major clade within the genus could be unambiguously defined by their spore morphology there are some characteristics of smaller clades and patterns of ornamentation and surface texture across the phylogeny. Our tentative hypothesis is that a pustulate megaspore ornamentation and a cobwebby texture are ancestral features in the megaspore of Isoetes.

  • Non-traditional library collections : in digital and other worlds
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Interlending & document supply. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0264-1615 .- 1758-5848. ; 42:4, s. 165-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose. The purpose of this article is to study how public libraries argue for the inclusion of non-traditional library collections and to identify public library objectives related to these collections. Design/methodology/approach. The data was collected through a Web survey which was sent to public library managers in all Swedish municipalities. Data were analyzed using a model in which public library practices are divided into three categories relating to the public library’s goals, activities and tools. Findings. Three different main arguments are used to support the introduction of non-traditional collections: as a contribution to public library goals or activities to attract non-users and as the result of external requests or needs. Through analysis of the survey results, the public library’s common goal, a socially sustainable society, was identified. Other library goals identified were an environmentally sustainable society and an improved library. Practical implications. The results may inspire practitioners to reflect upon how non-traditional collections are related to library goals and activities and what consequences their inclusion may have for the library. For example, if non-traditional collections are used only to attract new users, there is a risk of creating expectations that the library cannot live up to. Originality/value. Today, focus is placed on the conditions for public libraries in the digital world. It is easy to overlook the importance of non-traditional library collections, and the role they fulfill. This article draws attention to these collections and their possible consequences for public libraries.

  • The public library user and the charter tourist : two travellers, one analogy
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Information research. - : University of Sheffield: Department of Information Studies. - 1368-1613. ; 18:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction. A new theoretical model, relevant to library and information science, is implemented in this paper. The aim of this study is to contribute to the theoretical concepts of library and information science by introducing an ethnological model developed for investigating charter tourist styles thereby increasing our knowledge of users' approaches to public libraries. Method. This is an empirically grounded study. One hundred and eighty-two library visitors were interviewed at Swedish public libraries during 2011. Analysis. Both quantitative and qualitative content analysis were used in the treatment of the empirical data. Results. The paper is divided into three parts. The first part introduces the ethnological model. The second part presents the application of the model on the empirical data. The third part identifies possible research questions concerning public library user approaches. Conclusions. This study shows that it is fruitful to apply a travel analogy for mapping user approaches to public libraries. Five public library user approaches are identified. The application can be used as a tool in order to discuss priorities in public library activities.

  • Lydbogsbrugere og folkebibliotek
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Passage. - Köpenhamn. - 0901-8883 .- 1904-7797. ; :83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Donepezil in patients with severe Alzheimer's disease : double-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled study
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: The Lancet. - New York : Elsevier. - 0140-6736 .- 1474-547X. ; 367:9516, s. 1057-1065
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background The cholinesterase inhibitor donepezil is used to treat mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease. Its efficacy in severe dementia has not been assessed and is controversial. Our aim was to ascertain the effectiveness of donepezil in patients with severe Alzheimer's disease, by focusing primarily on cognition and activities of daily living. Methods We did a 6-month, double-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled study in 248 patients with severe Alzheimer's disease (mini mental state examination score 1-10) who were living in assisted care nursing homes ran by trained staff in Sweden. We assigned patients oral donepezil (5 mg per day for 30 days then up to 10 mg per day thereafter, n=128) or matched placebo (n=120). Our primary endpoints were change from baseline to month 6 in the severe impairment battery (SIB) and modified Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study activities of daily living inventory for severe Alzheimer's disease (ADCS-ADL-severe). We analysed outcomes for patients with data at baseline and at one or more other timepoints (modified intent-to-treat population) with last observation carried forward used to replace missing data.Findings 95 patients assigned donepezil and 99 patients assigned placebo completed the study. Patients treated with donepezil improved more in SIB scores and declined less in ADCS-ADL-severe scores at 6 months after initiation of treatment compared with baseline than did controls (least squares [LS] mean difference, 5.7,95% Cl 1.5-9.8; p=0.008, and 1.7, 0.2-3.2; p=0.03, respectively). The incidence of adverse events was comparable between groups (donepezil 82% [n=105] vs placebo 76% [n=91]), with most being transient and mild or moderate in severity. More patients discontinued treatment because of adverse events in the donepezil group (n=20) than in the placebo group (n=8).Interpretation Donepezil improves cognition and preserves function in individuals with severe Alzheimer's disease who live in nursing homes.

  • Volunteering at Archives - a mapping of volunteer management at archives in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden
  • 2024
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This report constitutes a first attempt to map volunteer management practices in the  Nordic archives sector, that is, in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland. We have  unfortunately not been able to include Iceland in this study, but it would be relevant  to include in future studies. This has been done through a survey broadly distributed  within the archive sector, as well as additional in-depth follow-up interviews. The  main purposes have been to achieve a better understanding of how and to what  extent archives in Scandinavia engage with volunteers, different attitudes towards  volunteer work and what it entails, and perhaps most importantly, identify needs  within the archive sector in the purpose of developing educational material and other  types of useful resources. We have also been examining the reasons why some  archives have not started working with volunteers, and what would be required to  help these archives take the first step in case of expressed interest. Through the  results, some comparisons between countries can be made. However, it is important  to highlight that, while we received 121 answers to the survey (Denmark: 33, Finland:  21, Norway: 44, Sweden: 23), there were of course many archives who did not  answer. Comparisons and analysis need to be made carefully, and certain  interpretations will be tentative in nature. This is a first attempt at mapping the  volunteer landscape at archives in Nordic countries, and we hope it can serve as an  inspiration and basis for further research.
