  • Towards Wireless Control in Industrial Process Automation : A Case Study at a Paper Mill
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE CONTROL SYSTEMS MAGAZINE. - : IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC. - 1066-033X .- 1941-000X. ; 39:5, s. 36-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wireless sensors and networks are used only occasionally in current control loops in the process industry. With rapid developments in embedded and highperformance computing, wireless communication, and cloud technology, drastic changes in the architecture and operation of industrial automation systems seem more likely than ever. These changes are driven by ever-growing demands on production quality and flexibility. However, as discussed in "Summary," there are several research obstacles to overcome. The radio communication environment in the process industry is often troublesome, as the environment is frequently cluttered with large metal objects, moving machines and vehicles, and processes emitting radio disturbances [1], [2]. The successful deployment of a wireless control system in such an environment requires careful design of communication links and network protocols as well as robust and reconfigurable control algorithms.

  • Surgical nurses' perceptions of strategies to enhance pain management proficiency : A qualitative study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nursing Reports. - : MDPI. - 2039-439X .- 2039-4403. ; 13:2, s. 923-933
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To describe surgical nurses' strategies for enhancing their pain management proficiency. A qualitative design was used to conduct the study. The participants were forty surgical nurses who had at least six years of nursing experience in caring for patients with pain. They responded to open-ended questions based on a review of the policy documents concerning the main elements of the pain management programme to be implemented by surgical nurses. Three key themes emerged from the surgical nurses' suggested strategies: partnering, disrupting, and becoming familiar with pain management competency concerns. Surgical nurses' strategies in acute and chronic pain management nursing units included solving patients' problems and promoting and enhancing pain strategies to address health challenges in organisations. The themes presented in the results include enhancing pain management in nursing competencies. State-of-the-art healthcare technologies are being applied to pain management. Surgical nurses' strategies should improve the quality of nursing care, especially post-surgery recovery time. It is recommended to engage patients, their families, and multidisciplinary care teams in other healthcare fields.

    • For a random graph on n vertices where the edges appear with individual rates, we give exact formulas for the expected time at which the number of components has gone down to k and the expected length of the corresponding minimal spanning forest. For a random bipartite graph we give a formula for the expected time at which a k-assignment appears. This result has a bearing on the random assignment problem.

  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics. - 3540672478 ; , s. 677-685
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We give expressions for the expected number of inversions after t random adjacent transpositions have been performed on the identity permutation in Sn+1 The problem is a simplification of a problem motivated by genome evolution. For a fixed t and for all n greater than or equal to t, the expected number of inversions after t random adjacent transpositions isE-nt = t - 2/n ((t)(2)) + Sigma(r=2)(t) (-1)(r)/n(r) [2(r)C(r)((t)(r+1)) + 4d(r) ((t)(r))]where d(2) = 0, d(3) = 1, d(4) = 9, d(5) = 69,... is a certain integer sequence. An important part of the our method is the use of a heat. conduction analogy of the random walks, which guarantees certain properties of the solution.

    • We answer some questions concerning the so-called sigma -game of Sutner [Linear cellular automata and the Garden of Eden, Math. Intelligencer 11 (1989), 49-53]. It is played on a graph where each vertex has a lamp, the light of which is toggled by pressing any vertex with an edge directed to the lamp. For example, we show that every configuration of lamps can be lit if and only if the number of complete matchings in the graph is odd. In the special case of an orthogonal grid one gets a criterion for whether the number of monomer-dimer tilings of an m x n grid is odd or even.

  • Triclosan changes community composition and selects for specific bacterial taxa in marine periphyton biofilms in low nanomolar concentrations
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Ecotoxicology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0963-9292 .- 1573-3017. ; 29:7, s. 1083-1094
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The antibacterial agent Triclosan (TCS) is a ubiquitous environmental contaminant due to its widespread use. Sensitivity to TCS varies substantially among eu- and pro-karyotic species and its risk for the marine environment remains to be better elucidated. In particular, the effects that TCS causes on marine microbial communities are largely unknown. In this study we therefore used 16S amplicon rDNA sequencing to investigate TCS effects on the bacterial composition in marine periphyton communities that developed under long-term exposure to different TCS concentrations. Exposure to TCS resulted in clear changes in bacterial composition already at concentrations of 1 to 3.16 nM. We conclude that TCS affects the structure of the bacterial part of periphyton communities at concentrations that actually occur in the marine environment. Sensitive taxa, whose abundance decreased significantly with increasing TCS concentrations, include the Rhodobiaceae and Rhodobacteraceae families of Alphaproteobacteria, and unidentified members of the Candidate division Parcubacteria. Tolerant taxa, whose abundance increased significantly with higher TCS concentrations, include the families Erythrobacteraceae (Alphaproteobacteria), Flavobacteriaceae (Bacteroidetes), Bdellovibrionaceae (Deltaproteobacteria), several families of Gammaproteobacteria, and members of the Candidate phylum Gracilibacteria. Our results demonstrate the variability of TCS sensitivity among bacteria, and that TCS can change marine bacterial composition at concentrations that have been detected in the marine environment.

  • Scandinavian Online Cancer Information as Expressions of Governmentality
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Advances in Nursing Science. - : Wolters Kluwer. - 0161-9268 .- 1550-5014. ; 46, s. 293-305
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We compared online distributed information provided to patients with cancer in Scandinavian countries through the lens of governmentality. A secondary comparative qualitative analysis was conducted. Discourses in online patient information showed differences in governmentality techniques across the countries: Norway used a paternalist approach, Denmark an educative approach, and Sweden an individualistic approach and expected the patients to make the “right” decisions. Online information for patients with cancer in Denmark and Norway showed high professional and health care system involvement, whereas in Sweden, there was high patient involvement. There was almost no use of the person-centered approach among the online discourses

  • The toxicity of ribbon worms: alpha-nemertides or tetrodotoxin, or both?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Planta Medica. - : Georg Thieme Verlag KG. - 0032-0943 .- 1439-0221. ; 82:Supplement 1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The marine ribbon worms (nemerteans) are predators which capture their prey by everting a proboscis carrying a mixture of toxins which brings on rapid paralysis [1]. Moreover, ribbon worms have a thick layer of epidermal mucus of similar constitution. Tetrodotoxin (TTX) has been identified as one of these toxins [2]. The extreme toxicity of TTX (lethal by ingestion of 0.5-2 mg) is due to its ability to block voltage-gated sodium channels. Although several bacterial species (among these Vibrio sp.) have been linked to its synthesis, the biogenic origin and biosynthesis is unclear. One hypothesis is that TTX production occurs in a symbiotic relationship with its host, in this case the ribbon worm [3]. We have made significant effort to identify TTX in a setup for production through the cultivation of Vibrio alginolyticus in nutrient broth infused with mucus from the ribbon worm Lineus longissimus. Toxicity was demonstrated by fraction injections into shore crabs, but no TTX was found, and it could be shown conclusively that toxicity was unrelated to TTX and the Vibrio culture itself, and rather a constituent of the ribbon worm mucus [4]. The following studies led us to the discovery of a new class of peptides, the alpha-nemertides, in the mucus of the ribbon worms, which could be directly linked to the toxic effects. A literature review of the available evidence for TTX in ribbon worms show that the evidence in most cases are indirect, although notable exceptions exist. This points to the necessity to further investigate the presence and roles of TTX and alpha-nemertides in ribbon worms.

  • (Over)crowded house : exploring asylum seekers' experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic while living at accommodation centers in Sweden
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: BMC Public Health. - : BioMed Central (BMC). - 1471-2458. ; 24:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has made visible the scale of health disparities in society, highlighting how the distribution of infection and deaths differs between population subgroups within countries. Asylum seekers represent a potentially vulnerable group; early in the pandemic, concerns were raised about their housing situation, usually involving overcrowded, camp-like accommodations, and the effects of COVID-19 in relation to this. Hence, this study aimed to explore asylum seekers' experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic while living at accommodation centers.MethodsIn this qualitative study, 14 semi-structured interviews were conducted with asylum seekers at two accommodation centers in Sweden. Participants represented a diverse group of asylum seekers in regard to age, educational background, and gender. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis.ResultsExperiences related to COVID-19 were highly dependent on the living situation at the accommodation centers and the experience of feeling unsafe in shared spaces. This was enhanced by the experiences of a challenging mix of COVID-19 messages where different understandings of COVID-19 and related measures existed, together with a feeling of loss of control and safety in shared rooms. Additionally, participants felt more isolated from the outside society and missed prior social activities. Adding to this experience of isolation was an increasing mistrust regarding the authorities' pandemic response.ConclusionThis study highlights the importance of understanding the specific challenges and vulnerabilities of asylum seekers at accommodation centers during the pandemic, shaped by their housing situation and legal status. The findings underscore the need for context-specific support, holistic disease prevention approaches, and tailored health communication strategies using diverse formats. Additionally, the findings emphasize the crucial need to identify and mobilize existing community resources in planning and implementing pandemic control measures. Furthermore, the study emphasizes governmental responsibility in providing secure housing, and to address long-term vulnerabilities beyond pandemics.

  • Improved software detection and extraction of ITS1 and ITS2 from ribosomal ITS sequences of fungi and other eukaryotes for analysis of environmental sequencing data
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Methods in Ecology and Evolution. - 2041-210X. ; 4:10, s. 914-919
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region is the primary choice for molecular identification of fungi. Its two highly variable spacers (ITS1 and ITS2) are usually species specific, whereas the intercalary 5.8S gene is highly conserved. For sequence clustering and blast searches, it is often advantageous to rely on either one of the variable spacers but not the conserved 5.8S gene. To identify and extract ITS1 and ITS2 from large taxonomic and environmental data sets is, however, often difficult, and many ITS sequences are incorrectly delimited in the public sequence databases. We introduce ITSx, a Perl-based software tool to extract ITS1, 5.8S and ITS2 – as well as full-length ITS sequences – from both Sanger and high-throughput sequencing data sets. ITSx uses hidden Markov models computed from large alignments of a total of 20 groups of eukaryotes, including fungi, metazoans and plants, and the sequence extraction is based on the predicted positions of the ribosomal genes in the sequences. ITSx has a very high proportion of true-positive extractions and a low proportion of false-positive extractions. Additionally, process parallelization permits expedient analyses of very large data sets, such as a one million sequence amplicon pyrosequencing data set. ITSx is rich in features and written to be easily incorporated into automated sequence analysis pipelines. ITSx paves the way for more sensitive blast searches and sequence clustering operations for the ITS region in eukaryotes. The software also permits elimination of non-ITS sequences from any data set. This is particularly useful for amplicon-based next-generation sequencing data sets, where insidious non-target sequences are often found among the target sequences. Such non-target sequences are difficult to find by other means and would contribute noise to diversity estimates if left in the data set.

  • The reasonable patient : A Swedish discursive construction
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nursing Inquiry. - : Wiley. - 1320-7881 .- 1440-1800. ; 28:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to analyse how the patient is constructed and socially positioned in Swedish patient information. Corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis methodology was utilised on a sample of 56 online patient information texts about cancer containing a total of 126,711 words. The findings show an overarching discourse of informed consent guided by specific features to produce a patient norm that we name “the reasonable patient”, who is receptive to arguments, emotionally restrained and makes decisions based on information. Through the discourse of informed consent, the norm of the reasonable patient emerges, apparently to even out the imbalance of power between patient and professional, but in reality, more likely to construct a patient who is easily controlled and managed. When the self-responsibility towards health is incorporated into the everyday domestic spaces via digital health technologies, the ideas and concepts of the patient role need to be reconsidered based on these new conditions. We conclude that it is important for nursing researchers to broaden the research on patients to include the relationship of power created through language. This study demonstrates both methodological and empirical possibilities to do so

  • Design requirements for ubiquitous computing environments for healthcare professionals
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Studies in Health Technology and Informatics, Volume 107: MEDINFO 2004. - San Francisco : AMIA. - 9781586034443 ; , s. 1416-1420
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ubiquitous computing environments can support clinical administrative routines in new ways. The aim of such computing approaches is to enhance routine physical work, thus it is important to identify specific design requirements. We studied healthcare professionals in an emergency room and developed the computer-augmented environment NOSTOS to support teamwork in that setting. NOSTOS uses digital pens and paper-based media as the primary input interface for data capture and as a means of controlling the system. NOSTOS also includes a digital desk, walk-up displays, and sensor technology that allow the system to track documents and activities in the workplace. We propose a set of requirements and discuss the value of tangible user interfaces for healthcare personnel. Our results suggest that the key requirements are flexibility in terms of system usage and seamless integration between digital and physical components. We also discuss how ubiquitous computing approaches like NOSTOS can be beneficial in the medical workplace.

  • Ingår i: International Journal of Medical Informatics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1386-5056 .- 1872-8243. ; 74:7-8, s. 545-551
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: Ubiquitous computing with multiple interaction devices requires new interface models that support user-specific modifications to applications and facilitate the fast development of active workspaces. Methods: We have developed NOSTOS, a computer-augmented work environment for clinical personnel to explore new user interface paradigms for ubiquitous computing. NOSTOS uses several devices such as digital pens, an active desk, and walk-up displays that allow the system to track documents and activities in the workplace. Results: We present the distributed user interface (DUI) model that allows standalone applications to distribute their user interface components to several devices dynamically at run-time. This mechanism permit clinicians to develop their own user interfaces and forms to clinical information systems to match their specific needs. We discuss the underlying technical concepts of DUIs and show how service discovery, component distribution, events and layout management are dealt with in the NOSTOS system. Conclusion: Our results suggest that DUIs - and similar network-based user interfaces - will be a prerequisite of future mobile user interfaces and essential to develop clinical multi-device environments. © 2005 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for psychological disorders is becoming increasingly popular on the Internet. However when using this workstation approach, components such as training and learning relaxation skills, problem solving, exposure exercises, and sleep management guidance must be done in the domestic environment. This paper describes design concepts for providing spatially explicit CBT with mobile phones. We reviewed and analyzed a set of treatment manuals to distinguish elements of CBT that can be improved and supported using mobile phone applications. The key advantage of mobile computing support in CBT is that multimedia can be applied to record, scale, and label anxiety-provoking situations where the need arises, which helps the CBT clients formulate and convey their thoughts and feelings to relatives and friends, as well as to therapists at subsequent treatment sessions.

  • A Scoping Review of Pain Management Education Programs (PMEPs) : Do They Prepare Nurses to Deal with Patients' Postoperative Pain?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Pain Research & Management. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1203-6765 .- 1918-1523.
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This is a report of a scoping review undertaken to obtain an overview of studies conducted on pain management education programs (PMEPs). The aim of this review was to describe existing research publications relating to PMEP to map how pain management practice training might directly influence surgical nurses in contributing to successful pain outcomes in patients. The initial search of electronic databases identified 40 articles according to the inclusion criteria and search strategy, which applied the following terms: ("Pain management education program") AND ∗ OR ∗ ("Nurses") AND ∗ OR ∗ ("Patient outcomes") AND ∗ ("Mixed methods"). Titles, abstracts, and keywords were also searched for the term "Nurse education." After applying exclusion criteria, five relevant peer-reviewed articles were eventually selected for the final charting of the data. The search included articles published between January 2015 and March 2019. The results show that PMEPs employ a variety of computer-based simulation, web-based facilitation, and video materials based on an evidence-based approach in their syllabuses. PMEPs were shown to enhance practice by promoting improved skills in critical thinking, leadership, patient management, and health promotion. Additionally, these programs promote an ability to practice across a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings, wherein nurses' engagement in managing patients' pain increased after completing the PMEP. Research within PMEP indicates that these programs may contribute to promoting opportunities for new collaborations within multidisciplinary team projects. Additionally, further research initiatives are needed to explore various aspects of these programs to enhance the nursing skills required for effective pain management, such as computer-based simulation, web-based facilitation, and video materials. Moreover, research relating to PMEPs in low- and middle-income countries is scarce and warrants further study.

  • Reclaiming Sexual health : unscripted sexual practices of men having sex with men after prostate cancer treatment as ways to comfort and wellbeing in everyday life
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Caring in a changing world. ; , s. 34-34
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in men. Treatments affect the body and the sexuality. Men having sex with men (MSM) report stronger influence on sexuality and quality of life.Aim: The purpose of the study was to describe the sexual health of MSM after prostate cancer treatment. Methods: Semi-structured interviews related to symptoms and issues, and the help received. Interviews were analyzed using content analysis. Results: The following themes emerged during the analysis: A predominant heteronormative care, Unscripted sexualities, A window of peer support system emerged. The men described how their sexuality had been affected and hampered by the treatments they had received with bodily changes and less pleasure. However, they also described the benefit of being MSM, being accustomed to exploring new ways of expressing and exploring their sexualities due to a lack of sexual scripts. The treatment provided a new reason to explore new sexualities and sexual practices. In contacts with urology and oncology departments, they described a heteronormative environment. Albeit same-sex partners could be asked for in intake notes, no one reflected on what non-penovaginal sexuality could look like. Instead, their friends and ability to find alternative ways to valid information became important. Conclusion: The result shows that predominantly heteronormative care exists for MSM where they had to rely on their MSM peers, but also exploring new sexual scripts.Caring in a changing world: MSM describe care that was well-meaning but heteronormative. The men described being MSM as something that had made them explore unscripted sexual practices and had given them a broader sexual repertoire that was helpful for their sexual health. More information on sexual health is needed for healthcare personnel to care for MSM in different life situations.

  • Unscripted sexual practices : Sexual health of men having sex with men after prostate cancer treatment
  • 2022
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to describe the sexual health of men having sex with men after prostate cancer treatment. Methods: A snowball sampling was conducted via clinicians and gatekeepers to the community. After consenting to participate, a semi-structured interview was conducted based on a questionnaire related to symptoms and issues and the help asked for and received. The interviews were approximately one hour and took place via digital platforms. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and then analyzed using content analysis. The following themes emerged during the analysis: A predominant heteronormative care, A situation of suffering and possibilities, A window of peer support system emerged. Results: The men described how their sexuality had been severely affected by their treatments. Bodily changes with decreased penis size, difficulties maintaining an erection, and less pleasure from anal sex. However, they also described the benefit of being men who had sex with men. They described being accustomed to exploring new ways of expressing and exploring their sexualities due to a lack of sexual scripts. The prostate cancer treatment had given them a new reason to explore new sexualities and sexual practices. In contacts with urology and oncology departments, both physicians and nurses, the men described a heteronormative environment. Albeit same-sex partners could be asked for in intake notes, no one reflected on what non-penovaginal sexuality could look like. Therefore, getting the appropriate care for the men after prostate cancer treatment did not involve erectile dysfunction medications was challenging. Instead, their friends and ability to find alternative ways to valid information became important. Conclusion: The result shows that predominantly heteronormative care exists for men who have sex with men. The new insight of the treatment is regarded as a situation of suffering and new possibilities. To conclude, men who have sex with men describe care that was well-meaning but heteronormative. The men described being men having sex with men as something that had made them explore unscripted sexual practices and had given them a broader sexual repertoire that was helpful for their sexual health. Furthermore, the support they received emerged from a peer support system in their private life.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Law and Psychiatry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0160-2527. ; 37:3, s. 231-237
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To the best of our knowledge, the present register is the only nationwide forensic psychiatric patient register in the world. The aim of this article is to describe the content of the Swedish National Forensic Psychiatric Register (SNFPR) for Swedish forensic patients for the year 2010. The subjects are individuals who, in connection with prosecution due to criminal acts, have been sentenced to compulsory forensic psychiatric treatment in Sweden. The results show that in 2010, 1476 Swedish forensic patients were assessed in the SNFPR; 1251 (85%) were males and 225 (15%) were females. Almost 60% of the patients had a diagnosis of schizophrenia, with a significantly higher frequency among males than females. As many as 70% of the patients had a previous history of outpatient psychiatric treatment before becoming a forensic psychiatric patient, with a mean age at first contact with psychiatric care of about 20 years old for both sexes. More than 63% of the patients had a history of addiction, with a higher proportion of males than females. Furthermore, as many as 38% of all patients committed crimes while under the influence of alcohol and/or illicit drugs. This was more often the case for men than for women. Both male and female patients were primarily sentenced for crimes related to life and death (e.g., murder, assault). However, there were more females than males in treatment for general dangerous crimes (e.g., arson), whereas men were more often prosecuted for crimes related to sex. In 2010, as many as 70% of all forensic patients in Sweden had a prior sentence for a criminal act, and males were prosecuted significantly more often than females. The most commonly prescribed pharmaceuticals for both genders were antipsychotics, although more women than men were prescribed other pharmaceuticals, such as antidepressants, antiepileptics, and anxiolytics. The result from the present study might give clinicians an opportunity to reflect upon and challenge their traditional treatment methods. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    • Gate leakage power dissipation is predicted to overtake subthreshold leakage power within the next few years thus adding further problems for designers trying to meet a strict power budget. In this paper a power cut-off technique is proposed, which in steep mode suppresses not only subthreshold leakage but also gate leakage. The proposed technique displays a combination of low total leakage power and short wake-up time.

  • The meaning of health among newly arrived immigrants : A qualitative study from stakeholders’ perspectives
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nordic journal of nursing research. - : Sage Publications. - 2057-1585 .- 2057-1593. ; 43:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Good health is a prerequisite for individuals to function in everyday life. The same applies to newly arrived immigrants, where good health is crucial for successful establishment. The aim of this study was to describe stakeholders’ experiences of how newly arrived immigrants’ health affects their opportunities to establish themselves in society. The study had a qualitative design where open-ended questions were analysed following Braun and Clarke’s guidelines for conducting a qualitative thematic analysis. The results consist of three themes: Mental health problems, disabilities, and tormenting concerns about absent family members; A precarious life situation related to housing, education, and income; and Deficiencies in responding to health challenges in organisations and in society. Stakeholders face health problems among newly arrived immigrants that they do not have the right skills to deal with. We argue for the presence of nurses in organisations working with newly arrived immigrants, and that nurses’ competence is necessary to capture their needs.

  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation is a study of a relatively new teacher function in nurse education, a teacher function that can be called clinical teacher, link lecturer, link teacher or lecturer involved in practice. The study departs from a constructivist perspective and the aim is to study the introduction, performance and regulation of this teacher function. The material consists of internationally and nationally published research 1978-2009, reports from the authorities, job ads for clinical teachers, job descriptions and contracts, archive material, evaluation studies, professional journals, texts on the Internet and 15 interviews with clinical teachers in Sweden. Using discourse analysis this material is studied in terms of interpretive repertoires, subject positions and ideological dilemmas. The primary focus of this dissertation concerns what problems the new teacher function is supposed to solve, how the problem should be solved, the effects of the chosen solutions and what´s staged, challenged and reproduced. Secondly, this dissertation highlights what categories of teachers are required and in demand for the new teacher function, how the teachers themselves manage their function and how the teacher function is maintained and challenged. The analysis identifies and highlights current interpretive repertoire, teachers possible subject positions and ideological dilemmas and how they are governed and challenged in the teaching function.

    • Social media has developed dramatically over the past decade and has emerged as one of themost widely used places for human interaction. Furthermore, the coronavirus pandemic hasaffected the way we communicate, and people spend more time on mediated and social mediaplatforms, also in relation to health concerns. Social media has therefore become an integral partof our daily lives with 3. 8 billion people worldwide using these complex social systems ofinformation. As these social systems of sharing information are becoming one of the main sources of healthinformation, a shift in the relation between health-seekers and health professionals is becoming afact. Health professionals and the institutions they worked in are no longer the first authoritiespeople reach out to when they want information on their health concerns. Social media resourcesnot only enable people to gather information for themselves and on their own health issues, butit also, more importantly, allows people to make sense of their experiences and to become selfperceived, self-lived “experts” on their own conditions. This paradigmatic changes in how we live our lives, moving from analog to digital resources andwithin this, an emerging of new experts in relation to health, is important to capture.Netnography is a qualitative method developed over the past 25 years designed to study socialmedia and how people interact with and within it. In this presentation the use of netnography willbe addressed as an opportunity to gain increased insight regarding health interactions in theseplatforms. A few basic principles and approaches in netnographic studies will be explained. Some examples of results covering over a decade of work with netnography will be presented. The presentation provides some guidance on potential paths towards a range of futurenetnographic inquiries to discuss and elaborate upon.

  • Ingår i: International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS), Vancouver, CANADA. MAY 23-26, 2004. - 0271-4310. ; 2, s. 461-464
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We employ a dynamic pass-transistor technique to drastically reduce the area requirement and power dissipation of the dot-operator cell in parallel-prefix adders. The technique is demonstrated in both 0.35 μm and 0.13 μm process technologies on a 64-bit Kogge-Stone carry tree. In a comparison with a corresponding domino implementation it is shown that the transistor count and the power dissipation can be reduced with as much as 25% and 50%, respectively. On top of the area and power reduction, the delay can also be significantly reduced by using NMOS precharge transistors, but this requires a clock signal with a higher voltage.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Full-custom design is considered superior to standard-cell design when a high-performance circuit is requested. The structured routing of critical wires is considered to be the most important contributor to this performance gap. However, this is only true for bitsliced designs, such as ripple-carry adders, but not for designs with inter-bitslice interconnections spanning several bitslices, such as tree adders and reduction-tree multipliers. It is found that standard-cell design techniques scale better with the data width than full-custom bitsliced layouts for designs dominated by inter-bitslice interconnections.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Glitches are common in arithmetic circuits, especially in large multipliers where they often represent the major part of transitions. With the aim to provide a judicious glitch-reduction strategy, we extract and study the relation between generated and propagated glitches for three different arithmetic blocks. We show that the number of propagated glitches is far bigger than those generated regardless of circuit type, supply voltage, and threshold voltage. In contrast to existing glitch-reduction strategies we propose to focus also on the glitch propagation mechanism. It is shown how the inverting property of adder cells can be harnessed to reduce propagation of glitches and thus the overall power dissipation.

  • Homoleptic Arylcopper Complexes
  • 1997
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • New arylcopper complexes have been synthesised and characterised structurally. The reaction between the Grignard reagent (viph)MgBr (viph = ortho-vinylphenyl) and CuCl has been studied and two unstable mixed aryl/halide intermediates, [Mg(THF)6][Cu5(viph)2Br4]2.THF and [Mg(THF)5Cl][Cu5(viph)4Br2].T HF, were isolated and found to reduce the yield of [Cu4(viph)4] markedly. The crystal structures of the two intermediates were determined and were found to exhibit unusual coordination geometries for copper(I) and provide mechanistic information. Mesitylcopper has been shown to be predominantly tetrameric in solution and a tetrameric phase has been isolated. Pentamethylphenylcopper has also been found to be a square planar complex. An aryl cuprate, [Cu5(C4H3S)6]-, has been isolated as a magnesium salt. The square planar tetrameric structure is found to be that most commonly encountered, both in solution and solid state, for neutral homoleptic arylcopper complexes without coordinating heteroatoms. Cocrystallisation is proposed as a method of growing X-ray quality crystals.

  • Long-term effects of lowered pH on marine periphyton communities
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: SETAC (Society of environmental Toxicology and Chemistry) Europe, 21st Annual Meeting.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The phenomenon of Ocean Acidification has been identified as a potential threat to several marine organisms and might lead to adverse disturbances of marine ecosystems. Although the knowledge about effects of rising acidity in the oceans is increasing for some species, the knowledge of these effects on the community level of biological complexity is very scarce. Still, community-level effect indicators are needed in order to predict direct and indirect effects of Ocean Acidification on marine ecosystems. In a community the organisms live in their realized niche with important ecological interactions (e.g. competition, grazing and predation) present. This gives community approaches in ecotoxicological tests high ecological relevance. Since lowered pH might eliminate species or strains that are sensitive to such stress, and select for the ones that are more competitive under this condition, a community approach have the potential to detect any pH-induced change in community structure or function. We have used marine periphyton communities in a long-term study of effects of increased partial pressure of CO2 in the water and the accompanied lowering of pH. Periphyton was allowed to colonize and grow on glass substrata for 3.5 weeks in flow-through microcosms. The pH in the microcosms was either that of the incoming natural surface water or was manipulated by bubbling of CO2 down to approximately 7.7. We used Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM) to detect effects on photosynthetic electron transport and estimate induced community tolerance to low pH. In addition, we used confocal microscopy to trace effects on biofilm architecture and biofilm thickness. We have also estimated microbial diversity and composition of trace elements in periphyton using PCR-TGGE and X-ray fluorescence respectively. First results indicate that long-term effects of lowered pH change the capacity of communities to tolerate further changes in pH, making them more sensitive to pH-stress. However, no long-term effects on photosynthetic electron transport or trace element composition was detected.

  • Long-term effects of the antibacterial agent triclosan on marine periphyton communities
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. - : Wiley. - 0730-7268 .- 1552-8618. ; 34:9, s. 2067-2077
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Triclosan is a widely used antibacterial agent that has become a ubiquitous contaminant in freshwater, estuary, and marine environments. Concerns about potential adverse effects of triclosan have been described in several recent risk assessments. Its effects on freshwater microbial communities have been well studied, but studies addressing effects on marine microbial communities are scarce. In the present study, the authors describe short- and long-term effects of triclosan on marine periphyton (microbial biofilm) communities. Short-term effects on photosynthesis were estimated after 60min to 210min of exposure. Long-term effects on photosynthesis, chlorophyll a fluorescence, pigment content, community tolerance, and bacterial carbon utilization were studied after exposing periphyton for 17d in flow-through microcosms to 0.316nM to 10000nM triclosan. Results from the short-term studies show that triclosan is toxic to periphyton photosynthesis. Half maximal effective concentration (EC50) values of 1080nM and 3000nM were estimated using (CO2)-C-14-incorporation and pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) fluorescence measurements, respectively. After long-term triclosan exposure in flow-through microcosms, photosynthesis estimated using PAM fluorometry was not inhibited by triclosan concentrations up to 1000nM but instead increased with increasing triclosan concentration. Similarly, at exposure concentrations of 31.6nM and higher, triclosan caused an increase in photosynthetic pigments. At 316nM triclosan, the pigment amounts were increased by a factor of 1.4 to 1.9 compared with the control level. Pollution-induced community tolerance was observed for algae and cyanobacteria at 100nM triclosan and higher. Despite the widespread use of triclosan as an antibacterial agent, the compound did not have any effects on bacterial carbon utilization after long-term exposure.

  • Reducing measurement uncertainty in Ni-63 measurements in reactor coolant water with high Co-60 activities
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0236-5731 .- 1588-2780. ; 296:2, s. 775-779
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In methods for quantification of Ni-63, in e. g. reactor coolant water, a chemical separation is required due to Ni-63 being a pure beta emitter with limited means of quantification. Co-60, a common radionuclide in reactor coolant water, is not completely separated with the commonly used separation procedure, and it is not resolved from Ni-63 in the beta spectrum. The separation method discussed in this work consists of TRU resin (Eichrom) and Ni resin (Eichrom). After running the separation procedure, depending on the initial activity of Co-60, there may still remain enough Co-60 to interfere in the measurement of Ni-63. The Co-60 interference is corrected for via a gamma spectrometric measurement. This correction may, depending on the Ni-63/Co-60 ratio, introduce a large contribution to the measurement uncertainty. The aim of this work was to evaluate the possibility to reduce the measurement uncertainty of Ni-63 measurements by adding a second Ni separation to the method. Double Ni separations were performed on reactor coolant water having a Co-60 activity much higher than the Ni-63 activity (Ni-63/Co-60 = 0.01), in order to decrease the radioactivity of Co-60 in the sample. The measurement uncertainty of the Ni-63 measurement result was reduced by a factor of about three.

  • Design of interactive health drama built on social realism.
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: MedInfo. - : IOS Publishing. - 1586034448 ; , s. 879-883
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are many psychosocial aspects of chronic diseases, such as diabetes. Educational multimedia can support patients with chronic diseases and their families by communicating narratives based on social realism. The production of such socio-realistic interactive health dramas requires systematic methods, especially for the identification of significant stories. The aim of this study is to explore the use of self-documentary video in the design of an Interactive Health Drama environment to support diabetic adolescents and their families. In particular, the potential of the self-documentary video for story development in combination with qualitative interviews were explored. The proposed approach, when further developed, is intended to enable all types of chronic disease patients to work with their specific psychosocial problems in a supportive and stimulating environment adapted to their personality and preferences.
