  • The transport service triad: a key unit of analysis
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing. - 0885-8624. ; 34:1, s. 253-266
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose The purpose of the paper is to identify and discuss the transport service triad (TST) as a key unit of analysis to understand the operations and conditions for change in freight transport systems at the micro level, i.e. at the level of analysis where business decisions and change interaction take place. Design/methodology/approach The theoretical framing is rooted in the IMP approach and in the literature on triads. A case study approach is used to illustrate the TST by analyzing a case involving a wholesaler of installation products, tools and supplies, a main construction company and a transport service provider. Findings The paper shows how the connections between the business relationships in the TST, influenced by connections to relationships outside the triad, impact on the efficiency in freight transport. The paper illustrates how analysis of TSTs can be applied in micro-level studies of change in freight transport systems and in supply networks. Research limitations/implications The triadic approach is instrumental to understand change in the transport system because it includes all relevant parties and relationships of concern, as well as the logic framing of their actions. However, while arguing that TSTs are generic to their nature, each TST is unique and needs to be identified and analyzed in its specific context. Practical implications The suggested framework may contribute to an understanding of the embeddedness of transport services in supply/business networks. The framework may support the development of new ways of operating and creating value for customers and offering sustainable transport solutions. Originality/value From the transport policy makers’ perspective, micro-level analysis is important to understand behavioral adjustments to new policies

  • CASE-BASED LEARNING IN COLLABORATION ACROSS UNIVERSITIES TO ENHANCE STUDENTS’ UNDERSTANDING OF SUSTAINABILITY
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International CDIO Conference. - 2002-1593. ; , s. 567-580
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Focus on sustainability is increasing in engineering and management education, businesses, and the larger society. In order to cope with sustainability challenges, more holistic pedagogies and practices that foster interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary ways of thinking are needed. Thus, this exploratory paper aims to provide insights into developing a master’s-level course module on sustainability in business networks by using active learning through case-based teaching together with collaboration among three Nordic universities (NTNU, Vaasa, and Chalmers). The paper illustrates the multiple facets of designing, implementing, and evaluating three-party collaborative case-based learning based on an active learning approach that enhances students’ learning and performance. We conclude that the students are actively involved and learn better with case-based learning and can further empathize and associate with the case contexts. This can be achieved through engagement in cross-border collaboration, a mix of student backgrounds, flexibility in choosing cases, and clarity in case materials. Additionally, we encourage teachers to use a combination of innovative active learning methods to promote students’ in-depth understanding of complex sustainability-related challenges.

  • Improving transport performance in supply networks: effects of (non)overlapping network horizons
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing. - 0885-8624. ; 36:10, s. 1767-1779
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The aim of this paper is to investigate how the efforts of improving transport performance within the scope of one business relationship are embedded in a transport service triad, which, in turn, is embedded in the wider supply network. Design/methodology/approach – The theoretical framing originates from the IMP approach with a specific focus on the concept network horizon, and literature on triads. The study is explorative and applies a qualitative design and a case study approach to illustrate how three actors engage in a change initiative to improve transport performance. Findings – The paper concludes that it is crucial to get counterparts aware of the importance of expanding and defining their network horizons for a certain change initiative. Interaction among actors is important to create awareness and expand its own as well as others’ network horizons for a certain change. Three generic facets are proposed: overlapping network horizons, partly overlapping network horizons and non-overlapping network horizons. Practical implications – The framework offers a tool to managers in terms of the concept of network horizon that can help to understand the challenges when dealing with change in supply networks and to understand where to deploy resources to cope with change. Originality/value – This study adds to the literature by explicating facets of the concept of network horizon, especially when firms are faced with a change, how they are affected by this change and how they can cope with the related challenges.

  • The role of public actors in construction logistics: effects on and of relational interfaces
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Construction Management and Economics. - Abingdon, Oxon, United Kingdom : Informa UK Limited. - 1466-433X .- 0144-6193. ; 39:10, s. 791-806
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Public actors are increasingly enforcing the use of specifically designed construction logistics setups (CLS) to cope with logistical challenges and minimising disturbances on third parties in large construction projects. The organising of these CLS is contingent on the interaction among several types of actors. The purpose of the paper is to advance the understanding of the design and use of CLS and the distribution of various outcomes of such arrangements on the actors involved. The paper analyses the role of public actors in the initiating of CLS and how this affects the relational interfaces in the CLS triad of developers, contractors and logistics service providers, and the outcomes of their interactions. First, the main reason for a public actor to initiate a CLS is not cost, productivity or innovativity gains, but to decrease disturbances on third parties. Second, developers and contractors are forced to use the CLS initiated by the public actor. This makes them take on a forced customer role, explaining why these actors are often resistant to adopt to a certain CLS. Third, ripple effects, such as unintended costs and productivity impacts, occur in the construction supply chain because of the use of CLS.

  • Transport Efficiency: Analysing the Transport Service Triad
  • 2019
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis deals with transport services and transport efficiency. There are growing environmental concerns for many industries and the freight transport industry in particular faces challenges in reducing its CO2 emissions. It has been argued that technical advancements on their own are insufficient in dealing with environmental impact from road freight transport and that one way forward could be to look at how firms organise and exchange transport services. The exchange of transport services are highly dependent on the exchange of goods since every exchange of goods generates a demand for transport services. The Transport Service Triad (TST) is introduced as a unit of analysis to explore the connections among firms involved in the exchange of transport services and the exchange of goods. Hence, the aim of this thesis is to study how the organising of transport services impacts on transport efficiency by taking a triadic approach. The theoretical framework is based on the Industrial Network Approach. This approach, with its three interrelated concepts; activities, resources, and actors, are used to capture transport efficiency on various levels in the network. A single case study approach is used to study a focal TST that illustrates the business relationships among three actors, the seller of transport services (a haulier), the seller of goods (a technical wholesaler), and the buyer of goods (a construction firm). The study shows how a TST approach provides a broader scope for analysis of transport efficiency than a firm or dyadic perspective since it captures all relevant parties in the exchange of transport services. Moreover, the study shows how improving transport efficiency from one actor’s perspective might not align with other actors’ views on improved transport efficiency or might conflict with other aspects of efficiency. To manage these issues interaction among firms is necessary to secure that the needed adjustments and adaptations of activities and resources are accomplished.

  • Transport efficiency in supply networks: The impact of network horizons and network contexts
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The increasing focus on climate change and CO2 emissions has set transport efficiency at the top of the agenda for industrial as well as societal actors. In this paper, transport efficiency is approached from a triadic perspective by using the transport service triad (TST) as a conceptual tool. The TST connects the exchange of goods between a seller and buyer of goods with the exchange of transport services between a seller and buyer of transport services. This connection results from the exchange of goods which generates a demand for transport services. The paper relies on a case study of a TST involving a technical wholesaler of installation products, a large construction firm and a transport service provider. The aim of the paper is to understand various actors’ perspectives on transport efficiency as well as challenges and tensions in a TST.

  • Transport service triads in supply networks
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This doctoral thesis deals with the embeddedness of transport services in supply networks. The exchange of transport services depends on the exchange of goods since exchange of goods generates demand for transport services. The transport service triad is introduced to explore connections among business relationships involved in the exchange of goods and in the exchange of transport services. The transport service triad involves three firms and four generic roles: the buyer of goods, the supplier of goods, the buyer of transport services, and the supplier of transport services. The theoretical framework takes point of departure in the industrial network approach and in the literature on triads. The industrial network approach highlights three interrelated network layers – activities, resources, and actors – and is used to capture interdependencies in supply networks. The triad is the smallest unit of analysis to analyse connectedness among business relationships. The triad is used to explore embeddedness in and of triads. Thus, the aim of this thesis is to explore embeddedness in and of transport service triads in supply networks. A qualitative case study approach is used to explore how firms organise and manage interdependencies related to transport services in supply networks and implications of connectedness between business relationships. The empirical data stem from actors involved in transport service triads and adjacent actors relating to the transport service triad. The thesis builds on five appended papers. This thesis shows how triads in general, and the transport service triad in particular, are critical units of analysis to understand how business relationships are connected in supply networks. In addition, this thesis highlights various types of embeddedness. This thesis adds to our knowledge of (1) triads in supply networks, (2) the intricacies of a supply network context leaping from dyads to triads to the broader network, (3) how firms organise transport services and handle the interdependencies that exist in supply networks, (4) the implications of connected business relationships, and (5) consequences on transport performance.

  • Long-haul coherent communications using microresonator-based frequency combs
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 25:22, s. 26678-26688
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Microresonator-based frequency combs are strong contenders as light sources for wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). Recent experiments have shown the potential of microresonator combs for replacing a multitude of WDM lasers with a single laser-pumped device. Previous demonstrations have however focused on short-distance few-span links reaching an impressive throughput at the expense of transmission distance. Here we report the first long-haul coherent communication demonstration using a microresonator-based comb source. We modulated polarization multiplexed (PM) quadrature phase-shift keying-data onto the comb lines allowing transmission over more than 6300 km in a single-mode fiber. In a second experiment, we reached beyond 700 km with the PM 16 quadrature amplitude modulation format. To the best of our knowledge, these results represent the longest fiber transmission ever achieved using an integrated comb source.

  • Logistikens roll i effektiva byggprocesser
  • 2017
