  • Crisis communication in service ecosystems : perspectives and future challenges
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Service Management. - 1757-5818. ; 33:4/5, s. 601-613
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this article is to offer new insights into crisis communication in service ecosystems. The authors present a framework to conceptually categorize service crises and then analyze key aspects of crisis communication among different stakeholders in a service ecosystem. Design/methodology/approach: Building on crisis communication and service ecosystems research, we propose a framework to better understand crisis communication during service crises in service ecosystems. In doing so, we propose a typology of service crisis in service ecosystems and identify the main factors of crisis communication under the lens of the Rhetorical Arena Theory (RAT). Findings: This article integrates communication theory and service research in the area and identifies different key dimensions to gain a deeper understanding of crisis communication in service ecosystems. Moreover, and building on RAT, several research lines are recommended in order to explore further macro (i.e. the role and interactions between different stakeholders in the event of a crisis) and micro (i.e. individual aspects related to the context, media, genre and text) dimensions, and their importance during the communication process. Originality/value: Our framework offers a typology of service crises and suggests the importance of considering a multi-actor, multi-channel perspective in communication when a crisis occurs in order to monitor and avoid the potential negative impact for both the organization's recovery and the service ecosystem evolution afterward.

  • The role of the corporate purpose and how investor relations officers make sense of it
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Public Relations Review. - 0363-8111. ; 49:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article addresses the role of the corporate purpose in strategic financial communication from the perspective of investor relations officers (IROs) with particular reference to their sensemaking process. Strategic financial communication increasingly includes intangible assets that contribute to the value of the company. At the same time, more and more companies are publishing corporate purpose statements that are intended to express their relevance. The article acknowledges those trends and aims to assess how IROs make sense of the corporate purpose and how they strategically use it in investor relations communication. Eleven qualitative in-depth interviews with IROs from German DAX40 companies were conducted and analyzed with an abductive method. The results show that IROs focus on cues when making sense of the corporate purpose, especially links to intangible assets and organizational values can be identified. The corporate purpose is only partially used in communication with the financial public. Deepened reflection on the corporate purpose, fueled by discussions and cues, supports the sensemaking process of IROs which can be guided by the organization. The role of the corporate purpose turned out to be complex with – although not always explored – the potential to be used as a descriptive and normative tool in strategic financial communication.

  • Anthony Giddens and public relations: A third way perspective
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Public Relations Review. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0363-8111. ; 33:3, s. 287-293
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the article, the main theories of Anthony Giddens (structuration and late modernity theory) are presented and applied upon public relations. A review shows that there have been few attempts to use these theories in public relations. The analysis states that using Giddens leads to a questioning of the dichotomy between instrumental agency-oriented theories that neglects power structures as well as critical theories that only views public relations as hidden strategic action used by elites to dominate the public sphere. The conclusion is that there are two major arguments for applying Giddens to public relations: (1) the theory of late modernity may enhance our understanding of public relations as an evolving practice in socio-historical and spatial terms; (2) the structuration theory enhances the holistic understanding of how public relations communication, interpreted as a process, may be used both as a reproductive and a transforming social instrument. Giddens theory may in other words be used as a "third way public relations theory". (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

  • Att gestalta en region : Källornas strategier och mediernas föreställningar om Öresund
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Öresund Bridge between Denmark and Sweden was inaugurated in the year 2000, connecting the city of Malmö and the Danish capital Copenhagen. The bridge was an important move towards the visionary realisation of a transnational Öresund Region. In this dissertation the communicative aspects of the regional process are put in focus. The vision of the Öresund Region that developed during the 1990s is analysed as a mass mediated social construction, influenced by public relations and news management efforts. The aim is to describe, understand and reflect upon Danish and Swedish newspapers’ conceptions of the Öresund Region, focusing on the relationships between professional sources and these conceptions within a late modern social context. The dissertation is founded on a social constructionist epistemology. The empirical analysis is inspired by rhetorical and critical discourse analysis. The study is mainly based on qualitative interviews, quantitative and qualitative analysis of newspaper texts and secondary data (opinion polls). The qualitative interviews are done with journalists and important opinion and marketing actors. The content and text analysis is based on a strategically chosen sample of texts during 1991-2001 in the two major and dominant newspapers in the region, Sydsvenska Dagbladet, Berlingske Tidende and their supplement Öresundsnytt. Some conclusions may be mentioned here. When it comes to news management strategies the study shows that three different strategies have been regularly applied, namely a factual, a journalistic and a publicity strategy. The factual strategy, emphasizing logical arguments and the production of reports, surveys, analysis, books and seminars aimed towards opinion elites, has been most successful. The content analysis shows that the regional newspapers gave a very positive profile of the region – consensus -oriented, male and with growth and profit at its centre. The qualitative analysis also shows that national stereotypes and conceptions are common. The Öresund Region is mainly constructed through Swedish or Danish national perspectives. From a macrodiscourse level the communicated region is dominated by a national growth discourse where regional political-economical elites support local and national growth prior to other values. Other possible discourse formations (for example cosmopolitan, neo-liberal, neo-democratic and cultural historical framings) are seldom used in the analyzed mass media. The media formation of the Öresund Region is dominated by elite actors and has an auto-communicative character.

  • Crisis communication in a new world: Reaching multicultural publics through old and new media
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nordicom Review. - 2001-5119. ; 30:1, s. 55-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract in UndeterminedCrisis communication is a growing field of research and practice. A weakness in the traditional research field is the lack of theoretical development and the isolated sender and mass communication focus. In the present paper, we challenge traditional research by focusing on the contemporary cultural and ethnic diversity in society from an audience-oriented media perspective. In the paper, we review earlier research on multicultural crisis communication. The discussion is based on secondary data on multicultural media use in Sweden and an Internet analysis focused on dialogue and community building. All together, the review and secondary data show that persons of foreign origin in Sweden have high access to ICT. This is an argument for directing crisis communication not only through traditional mass media, but also through new media. This is not only because of the simple reach of these channels, but also because of the increase in the quality and dialogue potential of these “great good places” (Oldenburg, 1999)

  • Depoliticizing terror : The news framing of the terrorist attacks in Norway, 22 July 2011
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Media, War & Conflict. - : SAGE Publications. - 1750-6352 .- 1750-6360. ; 8:1, s. 70-85
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyzes how the Norwegian news media framed the terrorist attacks in Oslo and the island of Utöya, which killed 77 mainly young people on 22 July 2011. Did the news media favour or counteract the propaganda of the terrorist? After discussing earlier research about terrorism and media and presenting theories on news framing, results from a content analysis of 924 news articles in two major Norwegian newspapers during the first two weeks after the attacks are analyzed. The coverage of the attacks is found to be very descriptive, focused on the perpetrator as an individual, giving him questionable political exposure and not analyzing reasons and consequences on a political–societal level. The news framing functioned as a way of depoliticizing the terror attacks by portraying the attack as conducted by a lone lunatic in contrast to a politically motivated terrorist linked to right-wing extremism.

  • Doing the Right Things or Doing Things Right? : Paradoxes and Swedish Communication Professionals’ Roles and Challenges
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Corporate Communications. - 1356-3289. ; 21:2, s. 142-159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine and analyze the prevailing form of rationality that governs the challenges, goals and roles of communication professionals. The authors will also explore alternative forms of rationality and discuss what these would imply. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on survey results from The European Communication Monitor (ECM) and qualitative interviews with communication managers in Sweden. First, the authors present the ECM data and the Swedish interview material, i.e. the authors depict the practitioners’ perceptions of what they understand as important work tasks and roles. The interviews focus on the actual practices of linking communication goals to business goals. Second, the results are challenged from a reflexive perspective, using theories from the paradox turn and questioning the “taken-for-granted thinking” in corporate communications. Findings – The ECM data show that the main challenge in practice is “linking business strategy and communication.” The Swedish respondents stand out when it comes to “building and maintaining trust” since this is considered to be almost as important. The qualitative interview study strengthens the results in the ECM. The interviewees seem to do their work according to the traditional management agenda – i.e. they break down overall business goals and translate these to measurable communication goals. The results are reflected upon using paradox theory. Two paradoxes are discussed: between managerialism and professionalism, and strategic generalists and operational specialists. Research limitations/implications – The study is based on survey data that have been collected through a convenience sample, and the interview study is a pilot study. Practical implications – The paper focuses conflicts between normative practitioner ideals and reality, and helps practitioners to reflect upon mainstream thinking. Originality/value – Based on the empirical findings in the ECM, the interviews and the theoretical framework, the authors conclude that if the idea of The Communicative Organization is to be fruitfully realized, it is necessary to depart from a multi-dimensional rationality and question ideas that are taken for granted. The use of paradox theory and concepts such as functional stupidity is rather original in corporate communication research. Additional research could further explore paradoxes in order to spark dialogue, which may undermine one-dimensional thinking and functional stupidity.

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Public Relations Review. - : Elsevier BV. - 0363-8111. ; 31:2, s. 293-295
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The research applies media discourse analysis and late modernity theory to the social construction of the transnational Oresund Region between the South of Sweden and East of Denmark. Based on interviews with PR sources and journalists, analysis of newspaper texts and opinion polls, the study found that despite trans-national aims the region is mainly constructed through Swedish or Danish national perspectives. It was also found that as a news management strategy, the factual strategy, emphasizing logical arguments and the production of reports, surveys, analysis, books and seminars aimed towards opinion elites, has been most successful. The communicated region is dominated by a national growth discourse where regional political-economical elites support local and national growth prior to other values. The media formation of the Oresund Region is dominated by elite actors and has an auto-communicative character.
