    • Background: There is increasing global evidence that today's work environment results in higher risk of adverse health among nursing staff than among other professions.Aim: To investigate self-reported general and mental health among Iranian nursing staff, and associations with organizational, physical and psychosocial working conditions and family situation.Methods: 520 nursing personnel from 10 university hospitals in Tehran participated in this cross-sectional study. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire in the Persian language, containing the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire, physical items from the Nurse Early eXit Study and two scales relating to general health and mental health from the Short Form-36. The Chi-square test with P < 0.05 and logistic regression were used to analyse data.Results: Three out of four nursing staff reported overtime work. The self-reported general and mental health rates of participants were poor/fair (38%, 41%), good (44%, 39%) and very good/excellent (18%, 20%), respectively. Family demands were associated with general health but were not associated with mental health. Adverse physical and psychosocial work conditions gave an elevated odds ratio for poor health.Conclusion: Poor general and mental health was associated with adverse working conditions and family demands. Physical and psychosocial working conditions of nursing personnel should be improved. Social facilities such as daycare for children and care for the elderly should be available during work shifts to help Iranian nurses play their family roles.

  • Adapt and strive: How ventures under resource constraints create value through business model adaptations

    • This paper looks into how new ventures organize their business models in order to meet their available resources. It employs the business model as the unit of analysis to investigate the role and nature of business model adaptation as a coping mechanism with resource constraints. By drawing on a case study with two ventures starting with different resources, the paper shows how those ventures use business model adaptation under resource constraints as a way to create comparable offerings. Business model adaptation involves a process of continuous search, selection, and improvement in value creation, value proposition, and value capture, based on the surrounding environment. For the two new ventures included in this study, early business model adaptations were related to (1) market geography and customer, (2) strategy marketing, sales, and growth, (3) profit profit formula and cost structure, and (4) structures, processes, and capabilities. This paper also shows how the adaptation process is conditioned by the venture's stock and flow of resources. Bringing a resource perspective into the process of business model adaptation implies practical implications for new ventures that are developing and adapting their business models to strategically co-develop their offering with their resources such that they match required adaptations.

  • Ultra-high frequency tunability in low-current and low-field spin-torque oscillators based on perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions

    • We demonstrate ultra-high frequency tunability of up to 4.4 GHz/mA, and low threshold currents of about -21 $\mu$A, in spin-torque oscillators based on CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB magnetic tunnel junctions, in which both free and fixed layers have perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). By using different thicknesses of the two CoFeB layers, their individual PMA strengths can be tailored to achieve significant relative misalignment of their respective magnetizations in moderate in-plane fields. We observe a broad maximum in both the device resistance and the generated microwave power around maximum misalignment. Maximum frequency tunability is observed at low-to-moderate fields and decrease rapidly after maximum misalignment.

    • In this paper, we present a new material stack for planar Hall effect bridge (PHEB) sensors and a detailed investigation of the sensitivity and noise properties of PHEB sensors made from these. The sputter deposited material stack was based on a ferromagnetic (FM) NiFe sensing layer surrounded by two layers of anti-FM IrMn. This material stack enables implementation of a thick NiFe layer without loss of sensitivity. We present an improvement in detectivity in the PHEB by changing the shape and the materials of the corners between the sensors in a meander shape. A significant reduction of noise also comes from the thick NiFe layer, due to the reduced resistance of the sensor.

    • Exchange spring magnets, consisting of a [Co(0.5 nm)/Pd(1 nm)](5) multilayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and a Co20Fe60B20 film with easy plane anisotropy, of variable thickness t(CFB), are investigated using Brillouin light scattering. On reducing t(CFB) in the range 0.8-2.3 nm, the spin-wave frequency gap displays a remarkable increase from nearly 4-48 GHz, reflecting the corresponding rapid growth of the tilting angle of the magnetization with respect to the film normal. These findings are interpreted using a one-dimensional model in which each atomic layer is assumed to be uniformly magnetized, subjected to an effective out-of-plane or easy-plane anisotropy depending on the layer position in the stack, and exchange coupled to its two nearest neighbour atomic layers. With respect to previously investigated [Co/Pd]-NiFe hybrid magnets, a largest frequency tunability, restricted to a narrower range of the soft layer thickness, is observed.

  • Autoimmunity to CD38 and GAD in Type I and Type II diabetes: CD38 and HLA genotypes and clinical phenotypes

    • Aims/hypothesis. Autoantibodies against CD38 have been found in some patients with Type II (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus and have been shown to stimulate insulin secretion by cultured human islets. We tested whether this new form of autoimmunity, (i) overlaps with anti-GAD autoimmunity, (ii) identifies an insulin-deficient phenotype, (iii) is under the influence of genetic factors. Methods. We screened 496 adults by immuno-blot analysis in the Botnia Study (298 with Type II and 98 with Type I (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus, 100 non-diabetic control subjects). Results. CD38-autoantibodies were found in 8.4% of Type II diabetic patients (p<0.003 vs 0% of control subjects), particularly in anti-GAD positive (14% vs 6% of anti-GAD negative, p=0.0004). CD38ab were also found in 4% of Type I diabetic patients; in the whole study group, 59% of anti-CD38 positive had DQB1 *02 compared with 38% of anti-CD38 negative (p=0.04). On the OGTT, beta-cell function (as the ratio of insulin-to-glucose areas) was impaired (p=0.02) only in association with anti-GAD positivity (3.2 +/- 3.1 U/mol, mean +/- SD) but not in anti-CD38 positive patients (5.6 +/- 2.9) as compared with patients free of autoimmunity (4.5 +/- 4.6, p=NS). In 44 Type II diabetic patients (22 negative and 22 positive for anti-CD38), no mutations were detected in any of the 8 exons, 5' end of intron 1 or the 5' and 3' untranslated regions of the CD38 gene. The previously described missense mutation (Arg140Trp) in exon 3 was not found in this cohort. There was no association between the PvUII polymorphism and clinical phenotype. Conclusion. Anti-CD38 autoimmunity identifies a clinical phenotype similar to non-autoimmune Type II diabetes, with relative preserved beta-cell function and weak genetic influence.

    • Myc oncogenic transcription factors (c-Myc, N-Myc, and L-Myc) coordinate the control of cell growth, division, and metabolism. In cancer, Myc overexpression is often associated with aggressive disease, which is in part due to the destruction of select targets by the ubiquitin-proteasome system (eg, SCF(Skp2)-directed destruction of the Cdk inhibitor p27(Kip1)). We reasoned that Myc would also regulate SUMOylation, a related means of posttranslational modification of proteins, and that this circuit would play essential roles in Myc-dependent tumorigenesis. Here, we report marked increases in the expression of genes that encode regulators and components of the SUMOylation machinery in mouse and human Myc-driven lymphomas, resulting in hyper-SUMOylation in these tumors. Further, inhibition of SUMOylation by genetic means disables Myc-induced proliferation, triggering G2/M cell-cycle arrest, polyploidy, and apoptosis. Using genetically defined cell models and conditional expression systems, this response was shown to be Myc specific. Finally, in vivo loss-of-function and pharmacologic studies demonstrated that inhibition of SUMOylation provokes rapid regression of Myc-driven lymphoma. Thus, targeting SUMOylation represents an attractive therapeutic option for lymphomas with MYC involvement.

    • Magnetic multilayer (ML) structures comprising a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) layer coupled to an in-plane magnetic anisotropy (IMA) layer are promising materials for zero/low field operating spin-torque oscillators and bit patterned recording media. The magnetization tilt angle can be easily tuned by varying the IMA layer thickness due to the competition between PMA and IMA layers. To explore the underlying magnetization reversal mechanism and to further understand the control of tilt angle and uniformity of the magnetization, the IMA (NiFe, Co, and CoFeB)/PMA (Co/Pd MLs) exchange spring systems are systematically studied. Experimental data obtained from magnetometry show good agreement with 1-D micromagnetic simulations, allowing us to design tunable exchange coupled spring as a function of IMA thickness.

    • We demonstrate spin transfer torque (STT) switching in multi-nanocontact STT devices fabricated using hole mask colloidal lithography. We also study the STT device resistance and switching properties as a function of applied magnetic field and nanocontact current. At low nanocontact current, magnetoresistance measurements show sharp, single-step switching at low switching fields. When the current is increased, the switching becomes multistep, and the switching field increases dramatically. We explain these results as arising from a transition from a predominantly single domain like switching to switching involving a vortex state. Micromagnetic simulations corroborate this picture, indicating that a single magnetic vortex nucleates in between the nanocontacts through the influence from the total Oersted field generated by the nanocontact ensemble.
