  • Knowledge dissemination in global R&D operations : an empirical study of multinationals in the high-technology electronics industry
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Management International Review. - : Springer Verlag (Germany). - 0938-8249. ; 40:1, s. 49-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study is an empirical examination of I) the mechanisms that three multinationals used to disseminate knowledge within their globally dispersed R&D operations, 2) the impediments that these multinationals experienced when implementing these mechanisms, and 3) the means to overcome these impediments. Management focused considerably on implementing mechanisms that facilitated the flow of knowledge to top management for the coordination of globally dispersed R&D activities. However, little attention was placed on mechanisms to facilitate the flow of knowledge for use by engineers in problem-solving activities. Three types of impediments to knowledge flow were observed: I) opportunity cost of time, 2) knowledge is power, and 3) not-invented-here. Knowledge flow in an MNC appears to be facilitated by establishing a one-company culture through I) incorporating teamwork as a company value, 2) evaluating individual knowledge contribution and assimilation in performance appraisals, 3) implementing a goal that promotes overall company improvement, and 4) facilitating extensive personnel rotation.

  • Opening the black box of the relationship between HRM practices and firm performance: A comparison of MNC subsidiaries in the USA, Finland, and Russia
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of International Business Studies. - : Palgrave Macmillan (part of Springer Nature): Hybrid journals [society-owned]. - 1478-6990 .- 0047-2506. ; 40, s. 690-712
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the extent to which different human resource management (HRM) practices work better in different countries. We also try to open the black box between HRM and multinational enterprise (MNE) subsidiary performance by considering mechanisms through which HRM practices affect MNE subsidiary performance. The study utilizes a unique data set consisting of subsidiaries of 241 MNEs operating in Russia, USA, and Finland. In the partial least-square analysis used to examine our hypotheses, we demonstrate that different HRM practices are preferable in different countries, and that motivation and ability are important mediating variables in the HRM–MNE subsidiary performance relationship.

  • The key commandments for doing Business in Russia
  • Ingår i: First.
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Russia possesses many opportunities being the world's largest country in terms of territory, possessing vast natural resources, having a population of over 150 million people, having had one of the world's fastest GDP growth rates of 7.5% from 2001-2005, and having less competition in some industries than is the case in many countries due to the economic transformation Russia is undergoing. However, Russia also has a dynamic, unique, challenging, and sometimes difficult to understand business environment that has caused problems for many foreign firms. As a result, it is risk rather than opportunity that many associate with Russia. There is no denying that doing business in Russia is not for the faint at heart. However, the difficulty to understand Russia's business environment can also be an advantage as it serves as an entry barrier that assists those who do enter and learn how to operate effectively to reap higher returns. Based on interviews with executives from 36 foreign firms operating in Russia and supplemented by our extensive experience in Russia as executives, consultants, executive trainers, and researchers over the last fifteen years, this article suggests eight commandments that will enable foreign firms to avoid mistakes and skip the trial and error learning many of their predecessors have had to go through and achieve success in Russia more rapidly. Indeed, this article suggests that risks can be mitigated and Russia presents good opportunities for skillfully-designed foreign investment projects that take into account local specifics.

  • Top management incentive compensation and knowledge sharing in multinational corporations
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Strategic Management Journal. - : Wiley. - 1932-443X .- 0143-2095 .- 1097-0266. ; 29:12, s. 1301-1323
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Growing interest has emerged in viewing the multinational corporation as a knowledge creating and diffusing entity. The importance of sharing knowledge across organizational and national boundaries has been established in previous research. However, the question of which organizational policies lead to knowledge sharing between multinational units is still not fully understood. In particular, the link between compensation mechanisms and knowledge sharing has not received attention in previous studies. By studying 164 foreign-owned subsidiaries located in Finland and China, this article attempts to identify the relationship between subsidiary bonus pay based on MNC-wide performance and knowledge sharing between different units of the MNC. In line with the knowledge-based perspective of the firm, the results suggest that incentive pay based on the collective performance of the MNC leads to greater knowledge sharing. • MNC knowledge transfer, subsidiary absorptive capacity and HRM
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of International Business Studies. - : Palgrave Macmillan. - 1478-6990 .- 0047-2506. ; 45:1, s. 38-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on a sample of 169 subsidiaries of multinational corporations (MNCs) operating in the USA, Russia, and Finland, this paper investigates the relationship between MNC subsidiary HRM practices, absorptive capacity and knowledge transfer. First, we examine the relationship between the application of specific HRM practices and the level of the absorptive capacity. Second, we suggest that absorptive capacity should be conceptualized as being comprised of both employees' ability and motivation. Further, results indicate that both ability and motivation (absorptive capacity) are needed to facilitate the transfer of knowledge from other parts of the MNC.
